From Super Bowl to World Cup, Julie and Zach Ertz stay connected
PHILADELPHIA -- Julie Ertz said she was scared to do the math.
Sitting next to her husband, Zach Ertz, on Thursday at the Philadelphia International Airport, about to head off on the next leg of their whirlwind tour, she was asked how often the couple is together during the course of a calendar year.
"Not as much as obviously I want to," she finally said, "but probably way less than half the year that I get to see him in person.
"I jokingly say I have a relationship on my phone because we probably FaceTime more than I actually see him."
It made the past month all the sweeter.
Rare are the times that Zach and Julie Ertz's schedules align, but that's exactly how it played out for the 2019 Women's World Cup in France.
On having husband Zach in attendance at the World Cup, Julie Ertz said: "It was a tournament that was very special in my heart for that reason." Daniela Porcelli/Getty Images
The Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up minicamp on June 13. Zach, their star tight end, took a red-eye to Paris the next day and got there in time to see Julie score her first World Cup goal in a win against Chile.
After slapping hands with her teammates, Julie found Zach in the stands and blew kisses up to him. Not anything planned, she said, but something that just felt right.
"I was so pumped," Zach said. "I thought she was going to get one. I was joking with her, 'I flew all this way, I better see a goal.' And needless to say, she didn't let me down, as always."
• Biggest training camp storylines • Tomlin pours back into his hometown • Lamar enters summer of scrutiny • Trade for Melvin Gordon unlikely? • NFL's best young players
Zach, 28, and Julie, 27, have taken their respective sports by storm. Zach is coming off a monster season for the Eagles in which he set an NFL record for most catches by a tight end with 116. The season prior, he caught the deciding touchdown in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, helping deliver the first Lombardi trophy to Philadelphia. Still, he is playing catch-up to Julie, the standout midfielder and 2017 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year who now has a pair of World Cup trophies on the mantle.
Climbing to the top of your profession takes sacrifice. In the Ertzes' case, part of the sacrifice is time spent with each other.
They live in different cities for most of the year: Zach in Philadelphia and Julie in Chicago to play for the Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League. Julie had been away since April. Zach squeezed in trips to Chicago in between organized team activities this spring in order to see his bride of two years.
"When her season is in, she's the one that kind of takes the priority and I travel to her a little bit more; and when I'm in season, it's kind of the opposite," Zach said. "Sometimes, I have to sacrifice kind of how my body feels and go jump on a plane and go see Julie on a weekend because that's what it takes for our marriage to be successful and for her to be OK and me be OK. The marriage is the most important thing that we have, not the sports, so whatever it takes for us to be happy and successful as a married couple takes precedence."
On having Zach in attendance at the World Cup, Julie said: "It was huge for me. Obviously, there's such a mental side to a tournament, it's a long tournament, we were there for like 45 days, so just being able to get my mind off soccer for a little bit, just that perspective and his support I feel like allowed me to refresh myself in between the games. It was a tournament that was very special in my heart for that reason."
Zach sported a patriotic jersey that read "Mr. Ertz" on the back during the games, enjoying the switch from a starring role to a supporting one.
"There's never been a [thought] in my mind where I'm like, 'Man, I should be the one that people are asking for pictures; I'm a pretty good player, too.' When people go up to Julie and go, 'Hey, can I get a picture with you?' it's the opposite, it's like, 'Hey, OK, do you need me to take the picture for you?' I have no issue doing that," Zach said. "I'm just excited to be her husband, and I think she's excited to be my wife, and we care about each other so much more than just athletes; we care about each other fully as people. And if she loves playing soccer and I truly love her, I'm going to be happy when she experiences success and just encourage her along the way."
They met at a baseball game when Zach was a junior at Stanford and Julie a sophomore at Santa Clara. When they first started talking, Zach said, they didn't even know that the other was involved in sports, and they built a foundation that wasn't dependent on their athletic pursuits. But athletics have been a central, undeniable part of their story. Both say they have benefited from having a partner who understands the commitment that it takes to play at the highest level, as well as the emotional support needed for the inevitable crashes along the way.
"When her season is in, she's the one that kind of takes the priority and I travel to her a little bit more," said Zach Ertz of his wife, Julie, the standout midfielder and 2017 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. David Niviere/Abaca/Sipa USA/AP Photo
They've also benefited from some solid advice given to them by friends at their wedding shower prior to their nuptials in March 2017.
"They said, 'You know, a lot of people think a marriage is 50-50, but sometimes it can be 90-10,'" Julie said. "And for us, we've learned that whoever needs more time or needs more of the attention at the time, gets it. So whatever that is, wherever it is or whenever it is, we make sure our marriage comes first.
"We just make sure that we're there for each other."
The couple took off from the Philadelphia airport on Thursday bound for California for the Ertz Family Foundation golf tournament to raise money for their charity, which gives back to their communities by providing opportunities in sports and education. Zach has since returned to Philly in advance of training camp, and Julie is bound for Chicago, where she'll be busy with the ongoing NWSL season and promoting her new book, titled "Chase Your Dreams." The fact that both are doing just that helps make the lengthy time apart more bearable, they said, as do their faith and the understanding that all of this moving around will slow down before long.
"That's like Zach's go-to quote every time we are having a really, really hard time being away," Julie said. "He says: 'Short season of our lives.'"

Report: Johnson & Johnson Hid Findings Of Asbestos In Baby Powder For Decades
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
NEW YORK (CBS News/CBS Local) — Johnson & Johnson has for decades known its raw talc and finished powders at times tested positive for small quantities of asbestos, with the company’s doctors and lawyers vexed by the findings but failing to alert regulators or consumers, according to a Reuters story published Friday.
J&J stock — up 6 percent for the year — plunged 11 percent on news of the report, based on memos, internal documents and confidential memos that the maker of Johnson’s Baby Powder had been compelled to share with attorneys for some 11,700 plaintiffs who claim the company’s powder products caused their cancers. The cases include thousands of women with ovarian cancer.

Any exposure to asbestos is a health risk, according to the World Health Organization and other medical groups.
Company documents, along with deposition and trial testimony, show that from at least 1971 to the early 2000s, tests showed small amounts of asbestos could sometimes be found in the company’s raw talc and finished powders, Reuters reported. At the same time, company executives, mine managers, scientists, doctors and lawyers worried about the problem and how to address it but did not disclose the issue to regulators or the public.

An examination of the documents also revealed how J&J succeeded in curbing regulators’ plans to curtail asbestos in cosmetic talc products as well as scientist research on talc’s health effects, Reuters stated.
J&J did not immediately return a request for comment, but the company has publicly maintained there is no science to back alleged links between its powder and cancer. The company has won several recent court cases alleging liability and damages, and is appealing other judgments, including $4.6 billion awarded in July to 22 women who claimed its product caused their ovarian cancer.

The New Brunswick, New Jersey, company has dominated the talc powder market for more than a century, with its talc products adding $420 million to the company’s $76.5 billion in sales in 2017. While contributing a relatively small portion to overall revenue, Johnson’s Baby Powder is seen as a major component of J&J’s image as a caring company — a “sacred cow,” as one 2003 internal email cited by Reuters put it.

Philly litter czar says new street sweeping program coming in 2019
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney will soon announce a street sweeping pilot program following years of criticism over litter-strewn streets, said Nic Esposito, the director of the mayor’s Zero Waste and Litter Cabinet.
“Right now we are looking at a possible pilot program, hopefully in the spring,” Esposito told WHYY Radio Times host Marty Moss-Coane during Wednesday’s show. “We are putting it together with the cabinet, Managing Director’s Office, the Streets Department and the administration. We’ll see what that looks like, there will be more details to come.”
Esposito said that the city has not yet selected a target area for the pilot.  The official announcement of the program will come from Kenney, Esposito said.
The on-air announcement comes a week after Kenney told Radio Times' Moss-Coane that the city was exploring the restoration of “some form of street cleaning” after nearly two decades without a regular, citywide street cleaning program.
Philadelphia is the only big city without regular street cleaning.
In his earlier Radio Times interview, Kenney outlined the obstacles that had led the city to eliminate the last remnants of regular street cleaning. The mayor had said that his political confidant and former South Philly councilman Frank DiCicco had nearly lost reelection due to residents furious over being ticketing for failing to move their cars.
“[DiCicco] was concerned with his re-election because people were so angry about having to move their cars when the streets were being swept,” Kenney said. “Think about how insane that was. So everyone was gun-shy after that.”
Kenney had promised to restore citywide cleaning during his 2015 election campaign and formed the Litter Cabinet to make good on that pledge. Since, Esposito has maintained that street sweeping is “not a silver bullet” for the citywide litter problem.
“We could sweep and then two days later it will go back to looking like it did,” he said.
He has said that the cabinet favors a holistic approach that includes data analysis, enhanced enforcement around short dumping and an initiative to give out trash can lids in certain neighborhoods.
Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Mike Newall, a Radio Times guest who has criticized the cabinet’s efforts to date, countered that the city sometimes seemed to be using studies as an excuse to delay the reintroduction of basic sanitation efforts.
“I think it’s great we’re doing all these studies … if it was on top of a basic service that the city was long past the need for,” he said. “Do the studies, then start the trucks. I’ll drive one.”

Eagles have the blueprint to beat the Panthers on the ground
Despite all of the trade talk surrounding the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles, it’s not a running back they’ll need against the Carolina Panthers, but a concept. It’s a concept I’ve gushed over before and one that the Washington Redskins used effectively against the Panthers defense last week.
It’s a trap. No, literally, it’s a trap concept.
Last year the Eagles led the league in efficiency using these. According to Pro Football Focus, their 40 trap concepts led the league in frequency. On those plays they averaged 7.3 yards per carry. The best part? The Eagles already know how well they work against the Panthers.
I charted plays that included a trap component in last years Week 6 28-23 win. 4 carries, 37 yards, and a 75% success rate. Last week the Redskins gashed the Panthers on the ground with a similar game-plan, pulling of 5 runs for 37 yards.
What makes it work? From my preseason Return of the Wham article:
Imagine you’re a defensive lineman getting smacked from all sides by the Eagles offensive line. Then you randomly get a clean look to the backfield. Your lizard brain takes over all motor function and sucks you into to the quarterback-running back mesh-point like a moth to a flame. You saw it on tape, you knew the chances of a trap were very real, still, that quarterback is RIGHT THERE. That’s the dilemma facing these linemen. They get tunnel vision and rarely see the tight end coming to attack from their side.
Looking at how the Redskins incorporated this into their ground game, they throw in a nice wrinkle.
Pre-snap linebacker Luke Kuechly is pointing out left guard Chase Roullier. He senses something is up, perhaps Roullier’s stance is giving something away, which would not surprise me given Kuechly’s football intelligence and the fact that he identified the same indicators at other points in the game. It’s all for not though, as the jet motion sucks him away from the action and frees up the backside for Adrian Peterson.
Roullier is indeed up to something as he finishes the trap on 3-tech Vernon Butler. Center Tony Bergstrom pins the 1-tech Kyle Love and Peterson is off into space. Normally Bergstrom would climb to seal off Kuechly as part of the design, but as was pointed out, he’s already taken himself out of the play.
The Eagles likes these concepts because it turns the size advantage on it’s head. If this were the Eagles offensive line, 295-pound Jason Kelce would give the 330-pound Butler a free run and then climb up to the 238-pound Kuechly.
Taking it a step further, the Eagles can seal off Butler (or the other Panthers linemen) with tight ends Dallas Goedert or Zach Ertz using a “wham” concept. The angle in which they take to Butler negate the size advantage and they’re only asked to momentarily get in the way. Here are the Eagles using the wham against the Panthers last year.
Getting the Eagles offensive line upfield and attacking the Panthers while letting their defensive linemen take themselves out of the play has been a win for the Eagles in the past, and it can be a win on Sunday. Better yet, the Eagles are using a combination of 12 and 13 personnel a league high 44% of the time, often from a double wing formation that allows them to wham from either side.
Tumblr media
Or they could run split zone from this same look, which they did in this instance for 8 yards. Or they could pin-pull, which was another design the Redskins’ used successfully against the Panthers and the Eagles are quite effective utilizing. Or they could run a wide zone RPO with a backside replace slant. Yes, that worked for the Redskins and it’s a staple for the Eagles.
Bottom line, the Eagles have the blueprint for beating the Panthers’ defense in the ground game. It’s one they’ve used before, it’s the same on the Redskins used last week, and it should work again on Sunday.

Wayne Simmonds contract: Ron Hextall was 'ways apart' on extension with Flyers' power forward
The Flyers on Monday evening officially named Chuck Fletcher their executive vice president and general manager (see story).
Paul Holmgren and Dave Scott told Fletcher they were looking for someone with previous general managerial experience, and no candidate had as much on their resumé as he did.
So what did the Flyers' new GM answer in his first brief 10-minute Q&A with the media, and what did we learn?
First order of business
If executive management is expecting to be better this season, then the easiest route to accomplishing that would be to make a coaching change. With Dave Hakstol having coached at North Dakota and Fletcher having previously served as Minnesota’s GM, there’s some familiarity there. However, Fletcher will be closely monitoring Hakstol’s job and whether that needs to be addressed.
“I’m a big believer in trying to get to know a situation before making a reaction here,” Fletcher said Monday on a conference call. “I certainly have no intention of making a coaching change tomorrow. I’m going to meet with Dave and we’re going to try and work together and push.”
Another area that Fletcher admitted to addressing is the Flyers' goaltending as well as the overall team defense, which is a big reason why the Flyers are currently 29th in goals allowed. During Fletcher’s nine-year tenure in Minnesota, the Wild were a respectable 13th. Fletcher said he will start by looking for those answers internally.
Would Fletcher hire Joel Quenneville?
I was surprised he stuck with Mike Yeo in Minnesota for as long as he did. Yeo coached 349 games over four-plus seasons, never making it past the second round. That tenure would rank him second on the Flyers' all-time list of games coach, so Fletcher has exercised patience with his head coach.
I don’t think Fletcher would hesitate to jump at the chance to hire Quenneville, especially with the support of Holmgren and Scott. After firing Yeo following the 2015-16 season, he brought in Bruce Boudreau, a high profile coach with one of the most successful regular season records in the NHL.
The question isn’t necessarily whether Fletcher would hire Quenneville, but rather does Quenneville want to rush back into coaching? If so, does he see Philadelphia as a place where he can have immediate success?
In-season trades
It sure sounds like Fletcher is open to in-season trades. In reading between the lines, Fletcher has identified some future assets he can use and utilize to make the Flyers a better team now.
“We have a very strong group of prospects," Fletcher said. "We have nine draft picks this year, an extra seventh. We do have cap space. So those are all resources you can use to make your team better, and the goal is always for me looking at this team from the outside, there’s no reason why we can’t be a playoff team now. There’s great resources in place.”
With Ron Hextall preciously holding onto the prospects and draft picks, possibly to a fault, I would expect other general managers to gauge Fletcher’s temperature on some of those coveted players or prospects within the organization. Don’t be alarmed if Fletcher makes two or possibly even three moves prior to the trade deadline.
Who's the AGM?
When Paul Fenton was brought in to replace Fletcher, he brought aboard Tom Kurvers from the Lightning as an assistant GM. That left Fletcher’s assistant Shep Harder, director of player personnel Andrew Brunette and senior vice president of hockey operations Brent Flahr wondering about their long-term future with the organization under a new regime.
I would think one of those three would likely serve as Fletcher’s right-hand man. Fletcher promoted Flair to SVP during the summer of 2017, and Fenton has in turn, stripped him of some of those duties. While Brunette may not have the experience on the executive level, having covered him as a player during his time with the Predators, he’s a tireless worker with tremendous leadership abilities.
“Clearly, we will look to replace that role and hire somebody, but there’s nothing imminent right now," Fletcher said. "If we can do it during the season, great. That’s something I’m going to put a lot of time and thought in, but first, I want to come in here and see the people that are here and the roles they are doing and maybe where we need to fill."

These 3 Philly Companies Made Fortune’s 2019 Best Companies List
Rankings
Here's how these local giants are making a name for themselves in workplace innovation.
iStock photo by curtrog
Fortune recently released its highly anticipated 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and three Philadelphia companies made the cut for their employee-approved workplaces.
The 2019 ranking takes a number of factors into consideration, including the company diversity, benefits, leadership, and atmosphere, all based on employee feedback. Organizations in a variety of industries from health care to retail and media are represented. The three companies representing Philly this year are three local giants — SAP America, Comcast and Power Home Remodeling. Here’s where they rank this year:
SAP America
Coming in at No. 28 is Newtown Square tech giant SAP. In the company’s Great Place To Work employee reviews, SAP’s culture is described as one with an abundance of opportunity and balance. And company management is transparent.
SAP currently employs about 19,411 nationwide, and the perks for workers abound. Part-timers who work a minimum of 24 hours a week can qualify for full-time benefits. Recent college graduates can enroll in the company’s paid “Internship Experience Project,” that serves as a major hiring pipeline for the company. With a history of leading the way on pay transparency and equal pay, it’s no surprise that this is SAP’s third year on the list.
Comcast NBCUniversal
Firmly standing at No. 71 is Philly telecommunications giant Comcast. Comcast debuted on the list last year at No. 68. With 184,000 employees, Comcast doesn’t fall short on perks. The company offers benefit packages that include “supplemental pay, paid military leave, and concierge services,” according to the ranking. Employees described the company’s atmosphere as familial and collaborative. Others described the company as especially hospitable and welcoming to new employees learning the ropes.
One goal Comcast has been working toward since 2017 is hiring more than 10,000 veterans. Comcast ranked third on Fortune’s accompanying list of Best Big Companies to Work For, behind Publix Super Markets and Marriott International.
Power Home Remodeling
Rolling in at No. 77, Power Home Remodeling is no newcomer to “best company culture” recognitions. Located in Chester, Power makes its third appearance on the Fortune list for some impressive reasons. Employees who refer female candidates for open positions can earn $2,000-$3,000 if that candidate gets hired. The benefit is part of Power’s new mission to hire more women. Overall, the firm seeks positive thinkers who can effectively contribute to its family culture.
A construction company, Power interestingly promotes the idea that it “prefers brains over brawns,” though to have both doesn’t hurt, the company says. Additional benefits include a yearly companywide trip to Mexico. Employees can bring a plus one. Other reviews cite Power’s management competence, facilities and resources as other elements that make the company a favorable place to work.

What They’re Saying About The Eagles: Week 3, Colts Edition
Welcome to the Week 3 Colts Edition of WTS. This game marked the first time Wentz was back under center since last December, and any lingering doubts which may have plagued fans regarding his play style or durability should’ve been greatly diminished simply by watching his mobility and command, as well as his walking off the field in an upright position after absorbing over 9,000 sacks.
While this was an ugly, messy game, it held a level of importance that on a personal level, greatly improved my outlook for this season and beyond. Things that I looked out for in this game, such as the play calling creativity or discrepancies between Reich and Pederson, as well as Wentz taking that first “Welcome Back” hit, helped to calm my inner negledelphian.
That’s not to say that we don’t have work to do, because we do. However, I think back to how we looked in 2016, with Wentz suddenly starting after Bradford’s trade, aided by a newly assembled and severely underrated coaching staff trying to get the pieces to fit. I think Reich is a brilliant offensive mind and it sucks that we lost him this past off season, but I also think that our coaches will find a way to make the pieces fit again.
Thanks New England!

Some notes on the game:
Andrew Luck was the Colts leading rusher with 1 carry for 33 yards.
We won.
Fuck Dallas.
That being said, the NFL has a major problem with their new rules regarding “roughing the passer” (RIP Clay Matthews). The refs in general seem to exert too much power over the flow of the game, and that doesn’t make for a very entertaining product.
At least the game threads were somewhat amusing, albeit relatively empty. With a 1:00 pm kick-off and little to no fanfare, it was easy to see how spoiled we’ve become as fans. This is the first non prime-time WTS written since last January. It’s also the first WTS I’ve done in a while that wasn’t covering some massive controversy, huge trade, major FA acquisition, or national prime-time game... AKA we’re not lingering on the collective league mind. Nobody really had much to say about anything, and that’s probably a good thing at this point, because while the league is drooling over Mahomes and the Rams, we can silently work our shit out and get back to where we need to just in time for the post season.
The game itself was a sloppy, flag filled shit fest, played on a wet field between two familiar coaching staffs who scripted conservative game plans surrounding two franchise QB’s fresh off of injury...
Fittingly, reddit comments are back for this edition, so keep an eye out for them at the end of your regularly scheduled WTS. Also, at the requests of BGN members HoldTheDorial and SakPrescott, I wanted to compile a short yet sweet bonus collection featuring some of the best comments from both the Cowboys and Vikings pathetic game threads.
And when I say pathetic, I mean glorious.
Because the Vikes game was held at the same time as ours, I elected to pepper their comments in throughout, so please keep in mind that they were largely focused on their own “game”. As for the Cowboys, that really does deserve a WTS all to itself, so look for some variation of that around the bye week.
Special side notes on some of the NFL’s most “Special” teams & tidbits:
The Bills traveled to “Minnesota” to blow out the Vikings. Nobody saw this coming, not even the Buffalo Bills official twitter page, who put up a pre-game graphic which had the team traveling to what seemed to be the border of Wisconsin and Illinois...
Tumblr media
The Buffalo Bills traveling to “Minnesota”, to play the Wisconsillinois Vikings.
The Browns beat the Jets, securing their first win since December 24th, 2016. It had to happen at some point, and the entire city rejoiced with free Bud Lights via citywide “Victory Fridges”, which unlocked simultaneously once the Browns were able to finally secure anything resembling a win. For those unfamiliar with this cruel and humiliating advertising ploy, Bud Light beer fridges were distributed throughout Cleveland, then locked and connected to each other via “Super High Tech Totally Awesome Bud Light WiFi Victory Fist Bump Lock System”, only to simultaneously open in the the rare case of a Browns win.
Tumblr media
These inhumane yet highly amusing contraptions finally released their mock, semi-alcoholic piss water to Browns fans following their Thursday night victory over the Jets, who then took full advantage of this joyous and not at all humiliating event, and have been collectively drunk ever since.
Tumblr media
Good for you Cleveland!
In 3 games, the Cardinals have scored just 20 points, and the Saints have allowed 103. Not sure why I find that fascinating, but I do. I promise to bring this back up in the WTS week 19 edition.
Four teams (GB, Min, Cle, & Pit) have a 1-1-1 record.
Off topic, can somebody please explain to me what the fuck this is?

NFL Week 17 Game Picks
The Bleeding Green Nation writers picks are in for Week 17 of the 2018 regular season schedule! Each week we’ll predict the winners of each and every NFL game. We’ll tally the results along the way and see who comes out on top at the end of the season. After Week 16, there’s a tie between myself and James Keane. It’s coming down to the wire! (Although we’ll still be doing playoff picks as well.)
When it comes to this week’s Philadelphia Eagles versus Washington Redskins game, most of our writers are feeling very confident in the reigning Super Bowl champions. Our writers are then split on the outcome of the Minnesota Vikings versus Chicago Bears game, which could determine if the Eagles will make the playoffs or not.
Feel free to post your own predictions or discuss the writer predictions in the comments. You can also vote for who you think will win the games. I’ll tally those results in a “BGN Community” column. Vote in the polls beneath the table.
Let’s get to this week’s picks!

Why We Write – Thoughts on the Art Writing Discussion Hosted by Artblog and The St. Claire
Why We Write – Thoughts on the Art Writing Discussion Hosted by Artblog and The St. Claire
The New Art Writers Contest is back for a 4th year! This October 12, 2016 “From the Vault” post by Anna Marie Gibertini takes us back to one of the earliest public conversations that Artblog organized about the craft, culture and function of art writing. Do you have opinions about art in Philly? Read on and submit your new art writing to the 2018 contest, open NOW!
(ED. NOTE: THIS POST BY ANNA MARIE GIBERTINI WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED OCT. 12, 2016)
As a hopeful arts journalist and recent graduate of Syracuse University’s Goldring Arts Journalism program, I think about the question of just what art criticism is and what purpose it fulfills daily. I recently learned I wasn’t the only one looking for the answers.
Audience members and panelists chit chatting before the Art Crit discussion begins
On September 28, a group of approximately 30 people gathered in Vox Populi’s black box performance space to talk about art criticism, as part of the 2016 New Art Writing Challenge sponsored by Artblog and The St. Claire. The panel comprised: Hammam Aldouri, writer, essayist, and philosopher; John Muse, artist, educator, and researcher; and Meredith Sellers, artist, educator, and writer. The discussion was moderated by artist, educator, and St. Claire co-director Suzanne Seesman. Matt Kalasky of The St. Claire manned the pop-up bar.
Criteria or Culture?
The conversation kicked off with an investigation of criteria — how do we evaluate art and what is criticism anyway? In the past, art critics could rely on an established canon of methodologies to digest and assess the quality of the art they took in. During my master’s program, I took a class in art literature methodology so I could understand what a piece meant beyond how I reacted to it personally. But that methodology, according to the panelists, is now outdated.
Post-structuralism, a variant of Continental philosophy that insists on the meaninglessness of authorial intent and on an endless variety of interpretation, has rendered any conversation about aesthetics moot, argued Aldouri. We cannot return to any kind of universal agreement on what is good and what is bad art. Is criticism therefore a pointless activity because we have no single rubric with which to judge? For Muse, art criticism should be about cultivating and building culture, not simply establishing a rubric of quality.
Panelist Meredith Sellers (left) and moderator Suzanne Seesman (right) paying rapt attention to an audience member’s question
Cultivating that culture is a difficult and intricate pursuit, argued Sellers. As a writer (she writes for Hyperallergic although she eschews the title “art critic,” preferring to be called an “art writer”), she spoke of the difficulty in growing Philadelphia’s art scene due to the lack of art-specific publications in the area. But as an artist, Sellers noted that the art infrastructure in Philadelphia isn’t friendly to artists because of that very lack.
“A show could be here today, gone tomorrow and no one would know,” she said.
Gate-Keepers
These issues mean that art critics (and writers) essentially act as vital gatekeepers – if they do not view and write about art, the gap between artists and their public will not be bridged and Philadelphia’s art culture will not blossom. Writing about art is no small feat, though.
A group shot of the panelists
During the Q&A, an audience member wondered if visual arts criticism was significantly different than other forms of criticism, like that of film or music. Seesman argued that it was, as “the art object is more complicated than any other kind of cultural artifact.” If we believe that art has endless and divergent interpretations, then, writing about art cannot be like writing about a movie, which (usually) has a plot and characters that will be understood similarly across audiences; or music, which has straightforward emotional power that can be interpreted clearly by all.
Muse joked that art’s slippery and endless interpretations were why he didn’t write much about art. “It’s hard!” he said.
The conversation went into other nooks and crannies and ended with more questions than answers, but I think that is the best outcome. Writing is hard, but worthwhile. As funding for the arts founders, it’s more important than ever to keep writing and keep investigating these questions of meaning and quality. Even if answers don’t become obvious, the persistent quest for meaning by art practitioners themselves and by arts writers will help the arts stay at the culture table rather than be relegated to the basement as irrelevant.

Democratic Candidate Caught On Video Removing Rival’s Campaign Material From Voter’s Home
Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter
MIDDLETOWN, Del. (CBS) — Some are calling it a political party foul after a Democratic candidate was caught on camera removing her rival’s campaign material, and swapping it with her own, at a voter’s home.
Randy Smith, of Middletown, Delaware, was with his wife and kids for a Sunday outing when he got a text from his home security system.
“I got an alert that somebody was on our property,” said Smith. “I checked that out and it was one of our local political candidates.”
Police: 100 People Arrested At Party Hosted By University Of Delaware Students
Around noon, the motion-sensitive camera on his porch captured Kevin Hensley, the Republican state representative for the 9th District, dropping off a campaign flier.
Then around 4:30 p.m., Smith got another alert when Democratic challenger Monique Johns also stopped by. Smith did a double take when he saw Johns actually remove Hensley’s literature from the front door and replace it with her own.
“So I very quickly surmised that there was a little bit of shadiness going on there,” said Smith.
Smith decided to post his findings on social media.
“This isn’t a political agenda for me, it was about seeing somebody doing some funny business and getting the information out,” said Smith.
As the videos spread online, Delaware Democratic Party Chairman Erik Raser-Schramm called on Johns to apologize.
“Campaigns are auditions for leadership positions, not win-at-all-cost prank wars,” said Raser-Schramm. “Tampering with the signs or campaign materials of an opponent isn’t just a bad election strategy, it’s bad for our democracy.”
Former Phillies Star Lenny Dykstra Pleads Not Guilty To Threat Charge Stemming From Altercation With Uber Driver
Unable to reach Johns on the phone, CBS3 stopped by the campaign headquarters listed on her website, which appeared to be her home.
Later in the afternoon, Johns said in a statement, “This was a lapse of judgment that I humbly regret. Please forgive me. I won’t make any excuses for this action. I have apologized to my opponent, my supporters, and now I apologize to the voters of the 9th Representative District.”
Hensley called it an unfortunate situation.
“Well, it’s unfortunate, it truly is because, quite frankly, folks in Delaware, we have the Delaware way, and tend to not really get into the negativity,” he said.
The Democratic Party also said that voters deserve better and more from their candidates.

World Awaits iTunes’ Fate Ahead Of Apple’s Annual Developer Conference
SAN JOSE, Calif. (CNN) — Is Apple killing iTunes? That’s the biggest question ahead of Apple’s annual developer conference in San Jose, California, on Monday.
Last week, Bloomberg reported the company is phasing out iTunes in favor of three new desktop apps, called Music, TV and Podcasts — similar to how these services are already divided on iPhones and iPads.
At its Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple will show off its next-generation mobile software iOS 13, which is expected to get a dark mode, improved Siri capabilites and an undo gesture, as well as a possible update to the Mac Pro.
But the move to phase out iTunes wouldn’t come as a total surprise as the company has been pushing users toward its Apple Music subscription service. After all, Apple can charge a monthly fee to boost revenue rather than wait for a customer to buy a few songs.
ITunes formally launched in 2001 but its music store, launched two years later, changed the way we buy songs and albums. The format came at a time the music business struggled with online piracy and file-sharing sites. With a relatively intuitive user interface, a simple billing tool and an on-demand catalogue, iTunes far better experience than any other platform at the time.
ITunes’ strategy has been closely aligned with Apple’s devices business, but the rise of subscription content and services is a clear shift away from the iTunes model, said Jack Kent, analyst of IHS Markit.
“For Apple’s own business, it marks the strategic shift away from a central hardware focus to a business in which subscription content and services are increasingly important for margin and revenues,” said Kent, referencing the iPhone’s sluggish sales.
IHS Markit’s research found subscription services accounted for more than 80% of online music and video revenues in 2018, compared with less than 10% in 2008, in North America and Western Europe.
Over the years, critics argued standalone apps — like the ones already on iPhones and iPads — could offer a smarter approach. Now that Apple has now acquired 56 million paying customers, perhaps the time is ripe for such a change.
“Apple had to put the pieces in place to make it all happen,” said Ramon Llamas of IDC Research. “If you look at consumer behavior in which users are willing to pay a regular fee for unlimited content — and that’s what they can get from other services such as Spotify, Pandora and Netflix — Apple is smartly aligning itself against those competitors with its own approach.”
If Apple does phase out the iTunes app, it doesn’t mean CEO Tim Cook is going to start remotely deleting years of downloaded and purchased songs and movies. The company will probably roll out next steps to manage and access downloaded content in other ways, such as via Apple Music.
“Building a bridge is always important in order to not alienate its current user base, but I’d argue that it has already taken that step considering the Apple Music numbers,” Llamas said. “Clearly, it needs to direct people in that direction and show a clear cut-off date so that users are prepared.”

Snapshots | OT Christmas Battle Goes to Boston
Photos: Getty Images
SNAPSHOT:
Fall, winter, or spring; holiday or normal day, the 76ers (22-13) know all too well how tough of an opponent the Boston Celtics (20-13) can be, especially at home.
With Kyrie Irving playing at peak level, the challenge of knocking off the C's becomes that much greater.
Despite mounting a strong second-half comeback bid, and taking an early lead in overtime, the Sixers were ultimately foiled by Irving and the Celtics, 121-114, in a thrilling Christmas Day battle at TD Garden.
It was the five-time All-Star who forced Tuesday’s extra period by nailing a heavily-contested 13-foot jumper with 36.0 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Then, after the Sixers jumped out to a five-point edge in OT, Irving drilled 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to put Boston in front for good.
“For the most part, we did a really good job on both sides of the ball,” said Brett Brown. “It is a disappointing loss because of the two or three minutes remaining in overtime.”
The Celtics outscored the Sixers 13-1 over the final three and a half minutes of play, as Irving finished with 40 points (17-33 fg, 5-10 3fg, 10 reb, 3 ast), his second 40-point outing of the year.
For the Sixers, their own All-Stars, Joel Embiid and Jimmy Butler, provided standout performances. Embiid notched his NBA-best 30th double-double with 34 points (10-17 fg, 2-4 3fg, 12-12 ft) and 16 rebounds.
He and Butler (24 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl) combined for 24 points in a tone-changing third frame, which saw the Sixers grab an 89-86 advantage. Their margin grew as big as seven points in the fourth.
Irving, however, had the last word.
“He hit a tough shot, that’s what he does,” Butler said of Irving. “He’s done that his entire career - take and make tough shots. That’s why he’s the type of player he is, and that’s why I respect his game so much.”
Turnovers were a key subplot to Tuesdays’ contest, the second of the year between the Sixers and Boston (Boston leads the season series, 2-0). The Sixers gave the ball away 19 times, resulting in 16 extra shots (7 extra makes), and 22 points scored off turnovers for the Celtics.
Click here for a complete box score.
TAKEAWAYS
The Sixers didn’t leave Boston with the outcome they were looking for, but that didn’t mean the the team’s only takeaway was a loss.
Brett Brown was pleased with the production of his starting group, which combined for all but 13 of the Sixers’ points, and all but 13 of their rebounds.
“The starting five for the large majority of the game was excellent,” Brown said. “I thought the spirit was great, the energy was great.”
He also seems to feel that the Sixers, even in defeat, made progress against their longtime rival.
“I leave feeling like we’re not that far off. We always learn a lot when we’re playing against somebody like the Celtics on their home court, with the team that they have.
“I look forward to watching us evolve. We will learn from this. We leave disappointed, but I think there’s lots you’re going to point to and say it was a hell of a job, and we lost to a team that’s very tough.”
BENCH SHOUTOUT
Regardless of how Tuesday’s final stats broke down between the starters and reserves, Joel Embiid gave some verbal love to the Sixers’ second-stringers.
“They come in every day and work hard and help us win. They play a huge role. They do a great job.”
QUALITY COMPETITION
There’s no doubt Ben Simmons is a competitive dude. He also seems to have an appreciation for opposing players and / or teams wired the same way.
The Boston Celtics, for sure, are no slouches, specifically at TD Garden.
“I love playing here because I know everytime I come down, it’s going to be a tough fight,” Simmons said. “In terms of their play, it was very physical.”
SIXERS SOCIAL:
Some sweet, side pick-and-roll music from Jimmy and Ben highlighted a strong third quarter from the Sixers.
UP NEXT:
The Sixers will head into the heart of their season-long five-game road trip, beginning a stretch of four straight visits to Western Conference opponents Thursday against the Utah Jazz. Heading into a Christmas night pairing with the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah sat 2.5 games out of the playoff race in the West. The Sixers topped the Jazz, 113-107, November 16th at The Center. Jimmy Butler netted a team-best 28 points in his home debut.

The Linc - Eagles’ pass rush ranks first in NFL
Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Ranking all 32 NFL teams’ pass-rush units after Week 6 - PFF Team Pass-Rush Grade: 85.9. Team Pressure Percentage: 42% (1st). Team Pressure Percentage when Blitzing: 50.0% (25th). Top Pass-Rusher (Pass-Rush Grade): DI Fletcher Cox (91.1).
Jim Schwartz’s plan for Cam Newton - BGN How do you plan to deploy a pass rush against a mobile quarterback? Do you contain on both sides? Do you add a spy to keep tabs for the entire game or in key situations? What if your data presents a different picture? What if it says you don’t need to do any of that? For Super Bowl Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, devising his rush plan starts with the quarterback, not the offensive line. He detailed this philosophy in a 2015 C.O.O.L. (Coaches of Offensive Linemen) Clinic.
A look ahead to the Eagles’ 2019 salary cap - PhillyVoice If the Eagles opted not to pick up Nick Foles’ option in 2019, or if they traded him, that would get them back under the cap immediately. That decision will seemingly be a no-brainer, particularly if the team views Nate Sudfeld as a legitimate No. 2 quarterback behind Carson Wentz. I believe they already do, and will even more so by 2019. Foles leaving would net almost $19 million in savings.
Still Shuffling - Iggles Blitz Does Darren Sproles have the worst hamstring injury in history? Yikes. You wonder if the Eagles should just sit him until after the bye week. If he’s not healthy by then, do you just give him the Old Yeller treatment? Sproles has been a terrific player for a long time and I hate that his final season has gone like this. It would be great if he could get healthy and help the team with some big plays down the stretch.
How Jordan Mailata has already inspired the next crop of NFL hopefuls Down Under - ESPN As Australia’s Jordan Mailata awaits a maiden NFL start, his amazing story has already inspired the next crop of athletes Down Under to pursue a career in American football. Mailata is reportedly edging closer to a first regular season game for Philadelphia Eagles, after first heading to Los Angeles for a workout last November. From there, the Aussie was invited to train at the IMG Academy in Florida, before the Eagles came calling with their final pick of the 2018 NFL Draft back in April.
NFL Forecast - Rotogrinders CAR @ PHI - 15mph sustained winds with stronger gusts, impact to deeper throws and kicks.
Torrey Smith’s homecoming game couldn’t come at a better time - Cat Scratch Reader He’s been a great addition to the Panthers, indeed. His leadership ability has shown with the younger receivers. Although it’s been a quiet season for the 29-year old, that’s not entirely his fault. Smith’s longest catch of the season was a 26-yarder against Atlanta in Week 2. The Panthers only have two completions for 20+ yards so far, which puts them last in the league. Adjusting to first year Norv Turner’s offense, Carolina simply hasn’t had many opportunities. But as the season progresses, Turner says they’re working on having a complete passing game and creating explosive plays.
Off The Beat: Jerseys? Sure! - PE.com Upon researching the Eagles’ uniform trends, I was surprised to find that the Eagles have worn their standard road uniforms (white jerseys, green pants) just once since January 1, 2017. White-on-green was the uniform combo for Nick Foles’ first start of 2017, when the Eagles defeated the Giants 34-29.
Get ready to see Eagles’ little-known DT Treyvon Hester take a bigger role - NBCSP Doug Pederson said Friday defensive tackle Treyvon Hester is “definitely going to be asked to do a little bit more this week” against the Panthers. Based on Hester’s performance last week, that’s a good thing. The Eagles added the 26-year-old defensive tackle to their practice squad in early September and promoted him to the active roster less than a month later. With Haloti Ngata’s lingering calf injury and Tim Jernigan’s return in question, the Eagles are probably going to ask more of Hester going forward. “Treyvon is an explosive player,” defensive line coach Chris Wilson said. “He has some similarities to Tim Jernigan in regards to how twitchy he is on the backside. A lot of times, Fletcher Cox gets a lot of attention and [Hester] has the ability to win some 1-on-1s. We need that.”
Who are the best Eagles players of the last 25 years? - Press of AC I’ve seen a few things in the last 25 years of covering the Eagles. There were good teams (2017, 2004) and bad (1998, 2012). The same holds true for coaches. Andy Reid was good. Rich Kotite and Chip Kelly were bad. Ray Rhodes was a mixture of both, but also my favorite Eagles coach because of his honesty and colorful way of explaining situations, even if that color was blue. Reid had the most sustained success, reaching five NFC championship games and a Super Bowl during his 14-year tenure. But Doug Pederson’s the only one to win a championship, so he goes to the top of the list. Here’s my choices for the top players at each position over the last 25 years. I’m sure you’ll disagree on a few, but there really aren’t any wrong answers.
FANPULSE - Redskin & Cowboy fans both predicting victory; somebody has to be wrong - Hogs Haven The Cowboys have lost to 3 teams this season - the Panthers, Seahawks and Texans. All three teams are ranked in the top-11 in the NFL in Points Allowed per game. The Redskins rank 8th, ahead of both the Panthers and Texans. The Redskins have beaten 3 teams this season — the Cardinals, Panthers and Packers. All three teams are in the bottom half of the league in Points Scored per game. The Cowboys rank 26th, below both the Panthers and Packers.
The Four Must-See Matchups for NFL Week 7 - The Ringer A matchup between the NFL’s no. 1 scoring offense and no. 1 scoring defense pits Drew Brees’s enduring excellence against the Ravens’ miserly defense. What else will we learn this weekend?
Geoff Schwartz’s 6 best and 5 worst NFL offensive lines heading into Week 7 - SB Nation Welcome back to the new, weekly offensive line column where I discuss the top five and bottom five offensive lines. The top five and bottom five aren’t likely to change much week to week, so I’ll give you the changes and highlight the units that are pointing up and pointing down. Let’s begin. The top offensive lines in the NFL, in no order: Packers, Eagles, Saints, Patriots, Steelers, Rams.
