About the MAMA 2021 Nominations...

Well, I expect nothing and yet I’m still let down every year. So here, tumblr, take my short, salty commentary about the nominations.

Best New Male Artist: This is probably going to be ENHYPEN, but if you nominate three groups that had their debut last year, then why couldn’t you nominate E’LAST? Or are they to individual for you?

Best New Female Artist: I expect aespa to win, but again: why are you nominating groups that had their debut last year? And of course, they are going to nominate the former IZ*ONE member that has one song out so far. I see what you are doing there Mnet, don’t try to hide it. Also, where is Purple Kiss’ nomination?

Best Male Artist: No Taemin, but three EXO members? I’m insulted! Also, Kai’s solo isn’t even from this year and Baekhyun continues to be boring, but will most likely win this category. Anyways, I’m rooting for Kang Daniel.

Best Female Artist: Both BLACKPINK solos, huh? They were pretty mediocre, but I can see that they might win. I’ll still hope that IU or Taeyeon will take the crown.

Best Male Group: This is one of the few categories where I can’t tell the outcome, but (and I never thought I’d ever say this) I want TXT to win. BTS and NCT were a hot mess this year and SEVENTEEN was boring. And why isn’t SHINee nominated? They came back from their semi-hiatus, released a killer album and went back into hiatus but are still doing the most. Where is their nomination, Mnet?

Best Female Group: How is (G)-IDLE nominated? They had one and a half comeback and then imploded. The other nominees seem fine. I’m hoping that TWICE or Oh My Girl will win, though.

Best Dance Perfomance Male Group: Alright, who was the guy that decided to nominate Butter and Hot Sauce in the same category as Thunderous and Don’t Call Me? Butter will probably win, because... popularity vote, but they shouldn’t because... SHINee. Also, how in the f**k is this SHINee’s only nomination?

Best Dance Performance Female Group: I don’t really have an opinion about who should win this, but I do know, who shouldn’t: Next Level. 80% of the choreo seems to be poses.

Best Dance Performance Solo: ON THE GROUND has a choreo? I didn’t know that. And where is Taemin’s nomination? Also, if they nominate Kai for best artist, couldn’t they also nominate him for this? Because he is definitely better at dancing than Baekhyun.

Best Vocal Performance: Taemin? SHINee? Anyone remember the kings?

Best Hip-Hop & Urban Music: I literally have no opinions about this.

Best OST: Same as above

Best Collaboration: There is not much to say about this. My Universe is boring as f**k and why would you choose Switch to Me, when Magnetic is right there? Is JYP paying you, so that he can embarass himself even further on live stage? It could be possible.

According to an article on Naver, on May 19, E'LAST's first unit, E'LAST U, will likely debut.  Unfortunately, the label has not yet announced the details of this plan. 

E’LAST  is a boy group under E Entertainment. They’re the company’s first group. E’LAST consists of Choi In, Rano, Seungyeop, Baekgyeul, Romin, Won Hyuk, Wonjun and Yejun. E’LAST officially debuted on June 9, 2020 with their mini album “Day Dream” and the title track “Swear“.

SEPTEMBER

Young K - Guard You. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Please. He's so wonderful. This stage I just call Rock God Brian.

Purple Kiss - Zombie. There is something sweet and joyful about Purple Kiss. I guess that's only too be expected from Mamamoo, Oneus and Onewe's little sisters, as is the inarguable talent. Zombie is a catchy little song both musically and choreographically.

Ateez - Deja Vu. Mingi is heaving sighs whilst wearing a three piece suit. Seonghwa is in a lace bodysuit that leaves little to the imagination. Hongjoong forgot his shirt entirely. So did Yeosang. Also I love the song, it's not just about attractive young men and their styling. It's hard to describe Deja Vu other than bloody excellent. I should listen to it more.

E'Last - Dark Dream. I really enjoy a song with some good drama in it. This is eminently enjoyable to listen to for its dramatics, but it is even more enjoyable to watch at the same time. My friends and I just started referring to this stage as Flesh and Drama. It is a concise description of events.

Itzy - Loco. I love Loco. It is my favourite Itzy song. I'm already a fan, but this one just gets stuck in my head in a good way :)

6 times ATINYs called out artists for plagiarizing ATEEZ

Plagiarism remains one of the gravest issues in the K-pop industry, and ATEEZ has had its fair share of disappointments regarding the same. The eight-member boy band has repeatedly pointed out that several artists have allegedly plagiarized their concepts, ideas, choreographies, and costumes, among other things.

ATINYs, the group's fandom, has actively called out any similarities or resemblances with ATEEZ's original works. The most recent VATA controversy after Wooyoung's 'Biting' incident is proof of this tendency.

The Street Man Fighter and We Dem Boyz' leader VATA was accused of imitating ATEEZ's signature step from their 2019 hit Say My Name for his New Thing challenge.

Despite incessant public callouts by ATINYs and K-pop idols like E'last's Won Hyuk, VATA's official statement addressing the plagiarism controversy was not considered satisfactory. Instead, it went on to discard any claims of plagiarism.

This, however, is not the first time that ATEEZ has taken notice of artists copying their hard work. From (G)-IDLE's Soyeon to JYPE's rookie girl group NMIXX, various artists have been blatantly called out by ATNIYs for allegedly plagiarizing the Deja Vu group.

Soyeon's SUN, E. Skhillz's Odg, and more: Six times artists came under the ATINY radar for plagiarizing ATEEZ

1) Soyeon's SUN controversy

(G)-IDLE's Soyeon was wrapped in plagiarism controversies after her song SUN's composition was dramatically similar to ATEEZ's 2019 release Wave. The K-pop idol performed the song on the finale episode of MBC's girl group audition program My Teen Girl, which aired on February 27.

The track was supposed to be a gift for the contestants from Soyeon (mentor) but instead drew attention for all the wrong reasons. ATINYs quickly pointed out the similarities between SUN and Waveand demanded an explanation. The artist's company, CUBE Entertainment, released a statement acknowledging the resemblance and apologized for not crediting the rightful producers despite the issue being known by both Soyeon and MBC.

2) MONOPOLY's album cover

ATINYs rushed to call out another artist named 'MONOPOLY' after they released the cover for their single album HOLYMOLY, which had a drastic resemblance with ATEEZ's fourth Extended Play Treasure Epilogue: Action to Answer's cover. The incident occurred in 2020 but did not gain attraction until the recent plagiarism controversy by VATA.

Unfortunately, little to no information is available about MONOPOLY, but according to some fans, the artist wanted to draw inspiration from the Fireworks crooners and meant no malice. He recognized his fault, apologized, and later changed the cover of his album, a move much appreciated by ATINYs.

3) Ammonit's REVERSE cover

Yet another lesser-known artist Ammonit was called out by ATINYs for copying the K-pop band's traditional design of styling their album covers of the ZERO: FEVER series. The two covers' uncanny similarity was brought to light by fans on social media, leading the artist to change their design. Like MONOPOLY, little to no information is available about Ammonit.

4) TRINITY's music concept dispute

TRINITY is a three-member Thai pop boy band that was formed in 2019. The group came under the ATINY radar for copying ATEEZ's Deja Vu concept pictures. One member was seen donning the same outfit as Wooyoung. Furthermore, fans also accused them of plagiarizing the group's March 2021 release Fireworks.

According to them, TRINITY's Life Ain't Over music video, released in December 2021, offered similar scenes and aesthetics as Fireworks(I'm the One). The fans demanded clarifications from the artists' company, 4nologue, and trended the hashtag #AtinyAskedForClarificationFrom4nologue. They constantly spread awareness of the alleged plagiarism and made relentless efforts to refrain people from insulting the artists.

5) Eltee Skhillz's Odg

Eltee Skhillz is a Nigerian singer who garnered the spotlight after his song Odg (March 2022) was allegedly declared a carbon copy of ATEEZ's The Real and Say My Name. ATINYs were furious over the artist's blatant plagiarism and disregard for the eight-member band's diligent labor. According to the description of Odg's music video on YouTube, Skhillz aimed to draw inspiration from the boy band. It reads,

“Partly inspired by ATEEZ "The Real" and "Say my name" music video”

From wearing similar costumes, including Hongjoong's blue hanbok, to delivering the same aesthetics, the Nigeran singer was accused of doing something unoriginal. ATINYs remain enraged over the artist's obliviousness towards cultural appropriation.

According to them, the mere mention in the description is the height of unprofessionalism and is appalling. They demanded that KQ Entertainment take legal action against Skhillz and give the artists due credit, but the agency continues to maintain silence over the situation to date.

6) NMIXX's chaotic debut

JYPE's rookie girl group NMIXX had a rocky start in the K-pop industry. The band's debut single OO met with extreme criticism after plagiarism allegations surfaced from ATINYs. From a pirate-themed ship, often used in ATEEZ's music videos such as Illusion and Pirate King, to following similar sets, concepts, and themes, JYP Entertainment came under fire for not only copying the Answercrooners but also jeopardizing the rookie girls' career.

Fans pointed out the stark resemblance in some of their lyrics, furthering the massive outrage online. Netizens also noted that DIGIPEDI, the studio that produced OO, has also teamed up with ATEEZ for some projects; hence, the similarities arose. However, according to ATINYs, this does not give them a free pass, and they should have been accountable for their actions. Unfortunately, no official statement was released by JYP Entertainment regarding this incident.

ATEEZ has one of the most dedicated and loyal fandoms of all time. ATINYs perpetually advocate for their favorite artists. They are ever-ready to come to the group's rescue and will call out artists who plagiarize the group's work.

Top 10 Most Underrated K-pop Songs of 2021 (Idol Edition)

2021 was somehow worse than 2020. But oh boy, at least the music was good.

And it took us a good while to decide on these lists.

Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2020 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high but deserves your attention!

Like last year we have a separate post for Top 10 underrated non-idol tracks in 2021 and a list for the Top 10 K-Dramas in 2021 in our opinion, which will drop in the coming days of this month.

Some of the artists have escaped the list in recent years to stardom (like THE BOYZ, SF9, VICTON and OH MY GIRL), so hopefully, it happens again!

This is in alphabetic order and NOT in the order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome.

BDC “Moonlight”

More K-Pop groups are experimenting with electro-pop elements in their music in recent years but few have been able to blend it well enough - with many such attempts making the song sound like another generic American or European electro-pop song. BDC does a great job here in making the song still fit the K-Pop song structure and formula. If you like the bright and hopeful sound of early SHINee and INFINITE songs with a modern twist, you would love "MOONLIGHT" by BDC.

E’LAST “Dark Dream”

Dramatic orchestral sounds were once staple in K-Pop but have been replaced by a love for hip-hop and electronic sounds in recent years. E'LAST is one of the few new groups that are still trying to go for this sound. If you enjoy the dramatic and over-the-top orchestral instrumentals in 2nd gen K-Pop, you would love E'LAST's "Dark Dream"!

fromis_9 “WE GO”

fromis_9 has a strong following overseas but seems to never truly take-off in South Korea, which is really strange, since they have a bright girl group sound that usually does well domestically. Hence, it made absolutely no sense that "WE GO", which continues their energetic sound and dropped in summer of all times did not make them a household name in South Korea. The music video is also one of the most innovatively produced MVs of K-Pop this year. With the girls moving under PLEDIS now, who knows if we will even see them again...T_T So if you like interesting MV editing choices and girl groups with up-beat music like Oh My Girl and WEKI MEKI, go check out fromis_9's "WE GO"!

LUNARSOLAR “DADADA”

Debuting with little fanfare in 2020, LUNARSOLAR returns in this confident, yet somewhat quirky and catchy bop - reminiscent of the also very underrated ELRIS. This song is probably the most underrated on this list as it did not even crack 1 million by December 2021 even though the song was released in April 2021. If you like fun and hype girl group music l which sounds like K/DA, Oh My Girl and Red Velvet music had a child, this song is for you!

Okay, many international fans know this song and this song did get talked about in South Korea. But people seem to be mainly hung up on the boy's love and homoerotic themes of the MV instead of what a musical and performative masterpiece this song is. The breathy singing, the sexy Vogue style bassline and subdued guitar riffs blended well with the dark alternative pop sound and is a perfect successor to the line of sexy underrated tracks previously featured on this blog's annual lists (SF9's "Now or Never" and KNK's "Sunset"). The choreography also works perfectly with this song and has wise simple use of props. If you like experimental music and provocative choreography, you would love this song.

ONF “Ugly Dance”

ONF has received a lot more love after Road to Kingdom last year but they really should have swept music show awards with "Ugly Dance" and they did not. Continuing with their electronic sound, this track is a perfect balance of their more experimental past songs ("We Must Love" and "Why" ) and their brighter and poppier performances ("COMPLETE" and "BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL"), truly exemplifying their ON and OFF concepts as well as the two extreme sides of K-Pop today. If you love a song that combines poppier sounds and darker electronic and hip-hop elements like various NCT U and NCT 127 songs, you would enjoy "Ugly Dance"!

Pink Fantasy “Poison”

Debuting in 2018 and experiencing various member and style changes, Pink Fantasy has dived into the niche of rock-influenced female idols in "Poison" and nailed the vocals and performance, exuding confidence and attitude in the MV. They do not seem to have much international or domestic attention, with the song barely scratching 1 million views as of December 2021. If you love DREAMCATCHER, you cannot miss out on this spectacular song worthy of being an anime opening theme!

Pixy “Addicted”

Pixy further pushes the agenda for more dark concept girl groups, as they conduct the performance for this whole song like they are part of some ancient dark magic ritual. They seem to have balanced the rock and horror side of DREAMCATCHER with the edgy experimental hip-hop side of (G)IDLE. Hence, if you enjoy music of these two groups, you should certainly check this song out!

Rocket Punch “Ring Ring”

"Ring Ring" is easily one of the most underrated retro-concept K-Pop songs of the year. The 80s dance sound is perfectly executed while maintaining the K-Pop song structure, creating a memorable banger that should have helped Woollim's youngest girl group hit jackpot. Yet for some strange reason, they remain relatively unknown to international and domestic audiences. If you enjoy K-Pop attempts at 1980s sounds like Wonder Girls' "I Feel You", Yubin's "Lady" and SNUPER's "Platonic Love", you would really like this song!

Woo Jin Young from D1CE “Happy Birthday”

Woo Jin Young's rap abilities have been long recognised on MIXNINE back in 2017 but likely due to the unpopularity of the show in South Korea, his talents and those of his group D1CE remain relatively unknown. It is disappointing that an amazing hip-hop performance in "Happy Birthday" failed to bring him and D1CE more attention. If you are a fan of BIG BANG's G-Dragon, iKON's Bobby and E'DAWN, you would really vibe to this track!

Special Mentions of Underrated Debuts:

KINGDOM "Excalibur"

With one of the most unique debut concepts for a boy group in a while, this group bases each comeback on different historical monarchs from around the world. Debuting with "Excalibur" based the legends on King Arthur, followed by "KARMA" based on mythical Chinese king Chiyou, and then "Dark Crown" based on the exploits of Ivan the Terrible, one cannot help but anticipate their tracks to come.

ICHILLIN' "GOT'YA"

There are many strong female rookie debuts this year that got a lot of attention. Hence, we would like to bring attention to ICHILLIN' as the group is balanced and has one of the most catchy debuts of the year - once you hear it the chorus will not leave your mind. They remind me very much of WEKI MEKI and woo!ah! during their debuts and I wish these girls from a small label all the best!

2021 Retrospective: Most Underwhelming Comback/Song

ONE OK ROCK – Renegades

I don’t really know if this counts, because it’s not K-Pop, but my post, my rules. ONE OK ROCK for a long time was one of my favourite J-Rock bands and I, like many other old fans, think they have lost their cool edge ever since going to America. They started to sing less and less Japanese and changed their music style to Pop-Rock as opposed to their older grittier style (Sound familiar?), which really annoyed many fans. Me included. They still have one or two good songs, but when they released Renegades last year as the Soundtrack for the final Rurouni Kenshin movie, fans were hyped. Why? Because it sounded like they had their old style back. But when the song was released, I was just disappointed. It’s again a Pop-Rock song. And what’s more infuriating is that there is a Japanese and an English version. The Japanese version has THREE Japanese lines. Why?

Honourable Mentions:

ENHYPEN – Drunk-Dazed

I actually really love this song. It’s one of the best instrumental tracks to come out of HYBE in the past year and it’s catchy as hell. The reason why I think it’s underwhelming, is because of the vocals. They are not good. I think the song would have a lot more potential if it was by any other group. To name a few: ONEUS, E’LAST, or even better: VIXX, BTS, INFINITE or SHINee.

MONSTA X – Gambler

This song infuriates me. On one hand, I think the instrumental is one of the coolest I have heard in the last year. On the other, the lyrics are very weird and I’m wondering who green-lit them. “My suit is black, my suit is fresh, open my pack let me show you how I bang” No! Please don’t show me! Who wrote this? A 60-year-old white man?

E’LAST U – The Beginning of Spring

It’s not that I don’t like this song, I just don’t understand why they already have a subunit. The song is fine. There is nothing special about it, except a really beautiful choreo that allows Choi In to show off. They really could have done more with it.

EXO – Don’t Fight The Feeling

“An EXO Comeback with Lay? Finally.” That’s probably what many fans thought, when they saw the teasers for the Comeback. But it didn’t feel like he was back at all. I don’t think there is one shot, where he was on the same set as the others. He’s still stuck in China. The others are filming in Korea. This song is also just a weaker version of Love Me Right and it’s not aided by the fact that one of their best vocalists is still in the military.

ONEUS – No Diggity

First, nobody knows what diggity is supposed to mean. It’s just a cool word for the sake of sounding cool. And secondly, though ONEUS carries this song with their voices and energy, this is not a good style for them. They really should stick with stuff like LIT, LUNA and TO BE OR NOT TO BE.
