The HSRC and NW Bergen History Coalition Invite You to the 2023 History Luncheon
George Washington's Leadership
Prior to the Siege of Yorktown
Marching from New York to Victory, 19 Aug.–26 Sept. 1781
Presented by Dr. William Ferraro
When: Wednesday, November 1, 2023, 11 a.m. (lunch served at 12 noon)
Where: Ramsey Country Club, 105 Lakeside Drive, Ramsey, NJ
Price: $55 per person (cash bar)
Co-sponsored by the Historical Society of Rockland County and the Northwest Bergen History Coalition.
We are privileged to have William M. Ferraro, Research Associate Professor and Editor of The Papers of George Washington, University of Virginia, as our guest speaker.
Most recently, the Washington Study Group has been focused on the Yorktown campaign and British surrender during the Revolutionary War. Dr. Ferraro wrote to us: "Washington was at his best coordinating the logistics of teh march from teh New York Highlands, through New Jersey, and southward to Virginia. Your group will be hearing the freshest documentary scholarship on George Washington and this period of the Revolutionary War, and a good part of it takes place right in your area."
About the speaker: William M. Ferraro was born in Corning, New York, and grew up in South River, New Jersey. Before joining The Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia in 2006, he worked as an editor at The Salman P. Chase Papers, Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, California, and The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Much of his independent research has evolved from his editing, and he has published scholarly articles and book chapter focused on Grant, Washington, James Monroe, and John and William Tecumseh Sherman. His numberous posts on nuances of Washington's correspondence and aspects of documentary editing can be found at washingtonpapers.org under the "Blog" tab.
Valet parking will be available.

on devyn bergen...
truth hurts.
being truthful entails a lot, but most of all, it calls for being vulnerable. it means releasing expectations, allowing for the authenticity of each being to shine through. you have to be prepared to expose every side, to allow every deep secret to bubble out and echo into a room, loud and clear. truth means baring yourself of inhibitions and the ultimate fear of what others might think. truth means unveiling who you really are — deep down below the layers and the fake smiles and the rehearsed responses.
the truth about truth is that not many are willing to openly listen, even fewer are equipped to handle it.
and others... well, others don’t know how to enunciate it. how to echo it.
so we lie. you lie.
it starts with a moment of sheer petulance. tired and broken, you lie and say doutzen isn’t your mother. you don’t know the woman — or so you insist, over and over and over again, to the point where the teacher pulls you in and affirms she won’t allow for you to go home until the woman proves to be your mother. doutzen spent a good chunk of the year traveling, arranging to get to all the commitments the life of an entrepreneur demands, and sometimes, seeing you didn’t quite make it to the top three priorities of the day. my mother’s name is daphne — you go on, resolute and utterly indifferent to the concerned looks of those around you. in the end? doutzen leaves and daphne ( your aunt who watches over you, not your mother ) comes to the rescue.
the narrative is flipped, then.
to whom it may concern, your mother’s name is daphne driegen.
culminating in yet another life-defining moment, the second lie comes years later, when you’re shy of fifteen years-old and find yourself in an identity crisis courtesy of the inquiries your roommates pose. you see, studying overseas was fun. attending the best schools in europe, in england specifically, and immersing yourself in a wholly different culture was nothing short of enjoyable. that is, until the murmurs begun and questions arose. where are you from? they would ask, and you would answer, straight-forward, simple as it was: the netherlands. the amused laughs always preceded the same query — no but like, where are you really from? and when you were patient enough to entertain them, tolerant enough to dismiss it as curiosity and go through the motions of it all, the ultimate sentence would boom, with intonations innocent enough to pose as harmless, how do you have the money to be here? your parents can’t possibly have wealth to give you all this, right?. out of exhaustion, and perhaps cunningly, you started making up the most ludicrous stories — your parents were drug lords, your father belonged to the mafia and operated within the black markets of the world... and people bought it. you were either feared or respected, left all alone or surrounded by fake friends requesting you all kinds of favors.
it lasted all through your school years, enveloped you and accompanied you all throughout your formative years, the ones that were supposed to shape and define you; show you who the real ones were. needless to say you often couldn’t keep up with your lies, and those around you, grew tired of the nonsense that you were.
without any real sense of identity, you couldn’t help yourself. you saw the lines and you wanted to cross them. the trill of exploring the unfamiliar, of trading the boredom of your daily basis for the adrenaline rushes that came from the unknown. trespassing private property, jump-starting cars from your so-called new friends’ parents, doing a line of coke, popping e, raving night in and night out, shoplifting. those were your personal dares. your very own attempts of seeing how far you could go, how much you could do without ever getting caught. the only problem? once you’ve crossed all the lines, when the rushes don’t come as frequently, and what was once shiny new becomes the new normal, you become lousy regarding your habits. first, it’s the bag of pills forgotten inside your favourite jeans’ pocket. then, it’s the bruise on your left rib in all its glory when you slip out of your shirt to take a dive in the family pool. and it’s one more thing after the other. getting worse and worse and worse, until one day your father gets a call, the call, to bail you out of jail. when you cross the lines, it’s almost impossible to go back — you’re told over and over, but even so, even with the wreckage you left behind and the pain you caused to all those who love you, they fight to drag you out.
your mother, your actual mother, lets you in. three hours are spent sitting in the family’s balcony, confiding in you. she gets you in the best, most private rehab facility — the same one she went to when she spiraled into depression ( and found solace in alcohol ) following your birth. for the first time in your life, you feel like you can properly breathe.
daphne, your aunt, celebrates each week, each month, each year of your sobriety. she offers you classes in the most random things. creative writing, photography, painting, language learning, paddle, diving... on year two ( you’re nineteen ) she offers you a trip to france : a fun weekend where you’ll team up and attend a culinary class from some famous chef. in a minimalistic kitchen, surrounded by fresh vegetables and the very best ingredients, you learn what being passionate about something is — and you find yourself smiling the brightest thanks to it.
one month later you beg your father to trust you and allow you to pursue your passion. with a quivering heart and eyes filled with tears, frank concedes. you get into le cordon bleu that same year, your father gets you a small flat in paris. the condition? you’ll check in at least four times a week so they know how you feel and you’ll be honest. you comply. and you know what? you find the the proximity to your family that you always sought.
you find solace in the dates, the numbers, the places.
the people.
you sit atop of the kitchen counter of your madrid apartment, eyes trained on the camera before you, a smile naturally curving the ends of your lips, adding a glint to your eyes when you say, my name is devyn mees kej bergen. my mother is doutzen bergen, a famous entrepreneur, my father is frank bergen, a former football player. i was born on june 3rd, 2002 in ultrecht, netherlands. i’m dutch. i’m black. i am privileged. i was an alcoholic and a drug addict. i made mistakes over and over and over. i lost myself trying to find my identity and i realized, no matter how hard we try to ignore it or deny it, eventually, the lies fall apart. whether we like it or not, the lies we tell other people, the lies we tell to ourselves, they shatter. the truth about the truth is... it hurts. so we lie. we take the easy way out, like cowards. but there’s beauty in finding yourself amid chaos. there’s beauty in being vulnerable, in letting people in and being truthful.

“O Holocausto nunca existiu”

#matrioska #libridaleggere #premiletterari #karenlojelo (presso Bergen,Norway) https://www.instagram.com/p/CntQEeXIBVY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Let’s face it, schooling is expensive, and you can’t cram everything you want to know into 4+ years. It takes a lifetime (and then some). So if you’re like me and want to learn more, here’s an organized list of some books I find particularly insightful and enjoyable. NEW ADDITIONS are listed first under their respective sections. If you have any recommendations, send them in!
African Religions 🌍
