A/N: SPINCH LOL!! Oh my god. This song choice. I had NO IDEA what to do with this. And also how to not make it deeply political bc I’m not in the mood to do that, lol. SO. Here you go. This was my best attempt, at Doug dodging the draft xD. Thank you so much for sending in the request, this was extremely fun and silly. Also thank you @randomstarmuffin​ for helping me think of this idea. It was gonna be this or a M*A*S*H AU, since the song reminds me of that show, and I don’t need more excuses to have MASH brain rot. Also. Forgive me for any inaccuracies here. I’ve never been drafted into the army, so all my research is from old 1940s movies I used to watch with my dad, and I didn’t know how to google more of this without plunging myself into hours and hours of research.

Well, shit.

Fuck. This is a problem. This is definitely a problem. How in the absolute hell is Doug going to get himself out of this one? He’s gotten himself both into and out of a great many things, but this one seems like a particularly large and difficult-to-get-out-of sort of thing he’s in. 

“First and last name?” asks (or rather, demands) the very official-looking government employee sitting in front of a desk, staring at Doug impatiently. Doug shifts on his feet. A whole queue of people wait around him, also filling out their enlistment cards or waiting to do so.

Doug fights off a groan. “Doug Reid.”

“Height?”

Doug sweats. “Um. Seven-foot-ten.”

The man, slowly, looks Doug up and down, and then raises a very unimpressed eyebrow at him.

“Two-foot-one?”

“That one’s more believable,” scoffs the man.

“Hey! Watch it, asshole.” Doug’s irritation spikes, which is maybe not the best move considering the position he’s in. Okay, so smooth-talking his way out of this is probably not going to work. Neither is faking an injury, because honestly Doug’s never been a great liar. He wishes he would’ve stolen his sister’s inhaler on his way here. Maybe he can pretend he has a spleen problem?

“Height?” The man repeats, less patiently.

“Ugh. Fight-foot-five, okay?”

The man writes it down. “Weight?”

Doug goes through the rest of the process with the employee, multi-tasking as he cusses out every government employee that has ever existed (and also every single politician while he’s at it, too), and also trying to figure out another way out of this. Could he pretend to be married? Maybe say his wife is pregnant? Would that work?

A loud noise startles him out of his thoughts.

At some point, a very tall man with long hair had stepped up next to him in the queue, also filling out an enlistment card with a government employee. Most notably, the tall man is also putting up quite a big fuss.

“Yes,” he says with a groan so annoyed and an expression so deadpan that Doug is a actually a little bit impressed, and continues to eavesdrop (it’s hard not to). “I’m actually six-foot-five. What? Too tall to join? Fantastic, can I fucking go home now?”

The man tries to leave, but the employee calls out “Sir-- please wait!” 

“Ahem,” says the employee that Doug himself is dealing with. “Attention here, please, sir. I asked, what’s your marital status?”

Oh. Hm.

Doug’s not sure why he does it. Maybe it’s because he feels like a kindred spirit, a little bit, to how much the tall man also seems to hate this whole process. Maybe it’s because Doug is absolutely desperate to not be sent away from his family, possibly to his own death. Maybe it’s because the tall man is actually kind of a little bit handsome. 

There’s a whole multitude of reasons. They’re all pretty fucking stupid, Doug will think in retrospect.

But, for now? Well, a man does what he must.

“Yeah, I’m married,” Doug says, a little extra loud and attention grab-y. Before the employee can finish writing that down, Doug adds, “Actually, it just so happens my spouse is over here. Oh, honey?” He turns to the tall man, who immediately gives him a quizzical look.

In a split-hair of a second, Doug and the man share an entire conversation with just their eyes.

You’ll do anything to get out of this? Doug’s eyes ask.

Yeah. You? the tall man’s eyes respond.

Yup.

Then Doug grabs the man by the lapels of his coat, pulls him down (for what feels like miles, by the way), and kisses him long and hard. And kisses him, and kisses him, and kisses him. And he kisses Doug back.

Doug can vaguely feel all eyes in the room on them. He can hear a few gasps, a few clasps. He barely focuses on that, though. What he really focuses on is the feeling of this man’s lips against his, a little rough, a little dry, but surprisingly very pleasant.

Huh, Doug thinks. I actually kinda like this.

thinking about how when I was a kid and played harvest moon games and iou know how there's like bachelors and bachelorettes and shit right. anyways yeah I'm thinking back to when I was a kid playing tree of tranquility and I was like debating in my head all the like male candidates just deciding based on pure like, frivolous details like Oh he likes this he likes that idk because I mean i didn't really care about any of them past that but I still wanted to romance Somebody bc I was like idk 8? maybe older? pure sentimental love was just really on the mind. and I eventually decided Toby because idk he's a nature lover that's cool I like nature too. and he's super easy you just need to give him fish and he fucking loves it (eventually became a pattern for me see: Elliot stardew and Dylas RF4). but like in the middle of that I was always thinking about this girl in the game named Renee who was a farm girl that liked animals and how much I wanted to get closer to her, so I would try! I did try with gifts and stuff. and I thought she was really pretty and I wished we could be capable of being "best friends" in the game but wasn't sure of what that meant or what I wanted from her exactly. I thought maybe I wanted to be her. because like I was also a girl who really liked animals a lot. but then one day while trying to visit toby I witnessed a heart event between him and her and learned that apparently the more you befriend a bachelor your same gender the more they will grow close to a different bachelor and marry them? like rivals. and hers just happened to be toby too. and in that moment I felt like, some weird mixture of feelings, maybe jealousy? or irritation? because I chose toby first. I didn't think she should marry him. I didn't think she should marry anybody actually. So I stopped talking to her completely. I would see her every now and then and some part of me wanted to really interact with her but I felt too much fear and maybe a bit of hatred for her. anyways Toby and I got married in the game. I still didn't talk to her even if it was safe now. Marriage was cool but even as a stupid kid I Eventually got sick of Toby's lovey dove dialogue. I still played on a lot though cos I was hoping for my character to get a baby soon. I'd eye the way the tobyrenee baby looked like on the wiki sometimes. we never did though! and then I grew up from the Wii. anyways that's my story

2024 Media: 102. Rune Factory 4 Special (2012) - 9.5/10★ I want to give this a 10 but the main story sucks honestly and the ending to it especially is very anticlimactic HOWEVER I haven't had so much fun with a game in forever honestly. I was crafting better gear, swapping stuff out to counter different enemies (I NEVER pay attention to stuff like this) I wasn't pissed off when I was killed I was just excited to go back and try again with better gear which is wild for me. The characters were loveable, Dylas you will always be in my heart <3 The romance aspect of the game is actually shockingly good imo? There's SO much variety in dialogue which keeps it fresh whilst raising your relationships with everyone in town. The little town events are ACTUALLY fun and interactive. The little town stories involve multiple characters and you see how people interact with each other. Idk everything about this game was so wonderful. Some of the weapons you can make are oversized produce and there are stupid boots that squeak or make you fall over. Rf4 has SO much character. I'm so happy I decided to play this game <3

How I feel about this character:

homosexually! Lest is my primary blorbo... my beloved. I will never stop thinking about him. He’s cute, sweet, and a little bit silly, which makes him the perfect whump target lmfao. Make that ray of sunshine suffer!!!

he deserves more attention and appreciation in the rf4 fandom!! Everyone is a Frey main and I understand why people prefer her over Lest, but sometimes I wish people would give my little guy a chance too :( it's why I focus on commissioning/drawing him the most. I need to recruit people to the Lest agenda

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

within the RF franchise, i think Lest/Ares or Lest/Raguna would be hot. otherwise, maybe he would look good with Aira from Ensemble Stars since they both have that feminine twinkish vibe? idk i haven't thought about this one much

a headcanon fact:

oh man it depends. I like to think of him as a gay trans man, but I also like to hc him as a he/him transmasc butch lesbian. i feel like all of my interpretations of him kind of exist at once so i will give multiple "facts" for each one :)

in situations where he's trans and he likes guys, i think he's a bit more subdued/reserved. he feels more societal pressure to fit in with the bachelors because of all the little comments that they make about liking girls. otoh i see him acting more like Frey if he's a butch lesbian – brash, earnest, and not afraid to speak his mind. he chills with both the guys and the gals at sleepovers and he doesn't care what people think!!

when both Lest and Frey are present in an AU, i like to think of them as siblings. sometimes i see them as fraternal twins, sometimes Frey is Lest’s younger yet more experienced sister. either way they have a pretty close bond! frey teases him a lot but he never complains bc he knows it's all in good jest and it takes a lot to piss him off. they joke about being bodyswapped at birth and team up to bully doug.

To be honest it's usually most of them, though I've been getting less...idk intense about it? It's been less of an issue lately? Maybe it's cause my current main is Ian Duff, a dating sim character, so it makes it a little easier to deal with?

Generally I just block people if I see we share an f/o unless it's a mutual then I just block their tag for that character.

Not sure what I'll do with his ears. I don't want to go the full "animal ears route as the game couldn't settle on just WHAT they're supposed to be (horse? wolf?) and I'm biased against animal ears in anime due to associations with them being too kiddish or due to being around for gross sex appeal. Idk idk. I might stick with this horse-shaped elfy design and add a dark gradient.

       there were a lot of things he had to do before tomorrow morning in order to open up the restaurant in time. put all the silverware away, wipe the tables, clean the floor, water the plants. & once done MAYBE he could get started on the prep some of the food for tomorrow, & then maybe even search for a good place to hide it before porco had a chance to eat it all. yeah-- rest could come later. the LAST thing he wanted to do right now was to drag everyone else down ( not everyone everything they’d done for him ).
