The Day it Snowed on the Neighbor’s House
An out-of-place scene in Tokyo nowadays, this Showa Era house’ days are surely numbered. The owner is an elderly lady in her late 80s or early 90s. It has a big, beautiful garden out back from which she gets loads of persimmons every fall (she hires someone to pick them). Sometimes she puts extra persimmons out front in a box with a sign that invites people to take them freely. I am sure real estate developers would love to have that land to build yet another cookie-cutter concrete apartment building. I am sure that within a decade, they will have the chance.

Being in an obscene amount of danger has been a henshin hero classic since the genre was invented
if you were a toku hero in the 70s they would take you to a filming location and find the tallest object around and point to it and say "climb that and do dangerous things on it"

Kaiju Week in Review (December 31, 2023-January 6, 2024)
Episode 9 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was a huge one, wrapping up the flashback storyline with gut punch after gut punch and dropping half the cast into a new realm of the Hollow Earth, Axis Mundi. I'm being vague because there's a very big twist at the end. Chomping at the bit for the finale.
youtube
@quazies has graced us with another animated Godzilla short, this one focusing on Rodan and wringing surprising emotion out of the daffy bird. And I continue to get a kick of out this Animal Crossing-esque Monster Island. This is their fourth Godzilla video; if you're unfamiliar with them, correct this immediately.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9e94c814d10ceb15dbb67d8879cd3496/efdf0aeeeae662ce-dd/s540x810/c6f43272e7b9e6ea1b488df048d0f8b4ebe9671d.jpg)
The new issue of TotalFilm has a sizable article on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. My notes:
Trapper (Dan Stevens) is a sort of Titan veterinarian.
Emphasis on filming in real places; the Hollow Earth is a mixture of Greenland, Iceland, Hawaii, and Australia. Also mentions some sort of physical Kong prop and another full-sized HEAV.
Apex isn't in this story "in a literal way," but Monarch seems to have copped some of their tech; Kong's B.E.A.S.T. Glove is implied to be one example. Sort of disappointing that the Monsterverse continues to avoid having a recurring human villain, but then it would've been hard to keep Apex in the picture, between the Mechagodzilla scandal and all their key members dying.
Rome is mentioned as a location in the film, which was reinforced this week with a Japanese trailer showing Godzilla astride the Colosseum prior to his evolution. As a half-Italian, I'm thrilled.
Wingard is aiming for late-Showa Godzilla vibes. Not possible on a nine-figure budget, says I, but I'm curious to see what he comes up with. Adds that he "wanted the color palette of the film to resemble the experience of what it was like to walk down a toy aisle in the 1980s[.]"
Wingard on Skar King: "[He's], in a way, the closest that the human threat has ever been juxtaposed onto a titan itself. The Skar King almost represents an upscaled version of the worst parts of humanity, just as Kong represents some of the best parts of humanity."
Now, about that cover... they're doing the bisexual lighting on purpose at this point, right?
The new Godzilla Battle Line units are Orga and Kiryu Kai (Heavy Arms Type). Orga's pretty fun, dropped into the arena by the Millennian UFO and respawning with half health once defeated. The new Kiryu is a major addition, dealing 30% more damage to units that cost 7 energy or more.
youtube
This is my first Kaiju Week in Review covering 2024; for a look back on all that happened in 2023 in kaiju film, television, and video games, I'll refer you to this excellent video by @zagorudan. @vintagehenshin has one out on indie tokusatsu as well.
This is a year ending in "4", so a lot of Godzilla movies have big anniversaries on the way. The biggest, of course, is Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, turning 50 on March 21. Toho wasn't celebrating golden anniversaries in earnest when the other non-Godzilla members of the Big Five reaches theirs, so expect a Full Weapon Strike of merch, comics, and short films. We already know Mechagodzilla's in the next Godzilla Rivals issue, though not top-billed. Ultraman Leo, ESPY, Evil of Dracula, and Prophecies of Nostradamus also turn 50 this year.

Rakugo references in One Room Angel
(Alert: this post includes spoilers)
One Room Angel, the BL drama directed by Eda Yuka, based on the manga of the same name by Harada, features quite a lot of references to rakugo. Angel seems to enjoy performing rakugo both now and in his past life, and a famous rakugo reference ends up being the key for uncovering Angel’s past memories.
So, what is rakugo and what are the rakugo stories referenced in One Room Angel?
In short, rakugo is a form of traditional comedic storytelling, that was born during the Edo period. It’s been around for about 300 years now. In a way it could be compared to stand-up comedy, except in stand-up, every performer has their own stories/jokes, whereas in rakugo the performers (rakugoka) mostly perform existing rakugo stories, bringing their own flair to them. Rakugoka use only their voice and expressions, plus simple tools like a paper fan (or chopsticks in Angel's case) and a folded tenugui towel to evoke different characters, settings and items in the story.
Since rakugo was born during the Edo period and was considered entertainment for ordinary people, many classical (kotenrakugo) stories make references to everyday Edo life. There are also new rakugo stories (shinsakurakugo) being written and performed by rakugoka nowadays.
The two rakugo stories referenced in One Room Angel, Manjuu kowai ( まんじゅうこわい, ”I’m afraid of manju”) and Jugemu (寿限無/じゅげむ) are both classical rakugo. My Japanese teacher told me that these two stories are usually taught to kids at school, so even without ever seeing a live rakugo performance, most Japanese people would be familiar with them.
Manjuu kowai is the story that Angel is repeatedly seen performing. The story starts with an introduction talking about how different people have different tastes, likes and fears. The story itself is about a man who claims that he is afraid of manju (a bun filled with sweet bean paste), and when his friends try to play a prank on him by filling his house with manju, proceeds to eat them and then wonders if he should next tell them that he’s afraid of tea. I really don't think there's any deeper meaning for why they chose this particular story, other than that it's so well known.
Jugemu is a story about a boy with a ridiculously long name. When he was born, his parents asked a Buddhist monk suggestions for a good name that would ensure a long life. After getting a list of names, the parents couldn’t choose just one, so they ended up naming their son Jugemu Jugemu Goko no Surikire Kaijarisuigyo no Suigyomatsu Unraimatsu Furaimatsu Ku Neru Tokoro ni Sumu Tokoro Yabura Koji no Bura Koji Paipo-paipo Paipo no Shuringan Shuringan no Gurindai Gurindai no Ponpokopi no Ponpokona no Chokyumei no Chosuke.
The comedy of the story partly comes from the rakugoka’s ability to recite the long name with amazing speed, and from how inconvenient such a long name is when you just want to have a normal conversation.
Jugemu is referenced in the twitter username tks_jugem2, and Kouki is able to guess the password for the account based on Jugemu’s full name (ie what comes after two Jugemus).
The irony that a boy who ended up dying so young had a username based on a boy whose million names were meant to ensure a long life is not lost on me. I’m not sure if that was actually what Harada intended in the og story at all, maybe it’s just me overthinking, but it makes this whole thing even sadder.
Fun fact: in the manga, the password was not spelled out for the reader like it was in the drama, you had to figure it out yourself if you wanted to access a website that is linked at the end of the manga that features a special bonus drawing. I think you can still find the link at the end of the english edition of One Room Angel manga on MangaPlanet’s website.
If you want to know more about rakugo, I definitely recommend checking out Descending Stories/ Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It's a story about two rival rakugoka, and it showcases the culture and stories of rakugo with love and detail. The original manga was drawn by the famous BL mangaka Kumota Haruko, so even if it’s not strictly BL, I think BL lovers will enjoy it (I sure did). The manga has been licensed in english by Kodansha and there is also a beautiful anime adaptation and a live action drama!

The term “Modern AU” for Naruto fandom needs to die. (Jk, sort of). It needs a new name, for ontologies sake.
Like. There is no consistency to the technological advancement in Naruto at all, but nonetheless, it is a demonstrable product of its initial years of development, which is the 90’s.
Throughout pt1 and Shippuden, we get a weird and nonsensical mix of Showa era (all of it, from 1886-1949) postwar period (1947-1980 thereabouts, though Wikipedia will disagree with me on that) and mid-late 90’s tech boom.
Now you could solidly argue for a “modern” interpretation of the Showa-era systems and customs, although that very much interferes with 1. the Uchiha as a clan, because they are 100% late Showa / WW2 period culturally. Hyuuga are more representative of the earlier Showa era, like 1920’s or so. SO yes you could do away with that, but frankly those clans are not themselves outside of that satirical context. (And I do actually think Kishimoto meant it to be satire, or at least his editor, who came up with most of the Uchiha premise, did). And
2. The whole Shinobi premise, which had still-living threads during that time period despite Shinobi as a profession supposedly dying in the 1850’s. (Pfffffft, Like mercenaries went anywhere during the European renaissance; they simply went from mercs to commissioned officers. Title change but not role change. Same idea.)
Furthering this, if you take them out of the dirt, so to speak, then they cease to have the in-universe function that they do. They don’t have to — you can still absolutely mock up a Mercenary-Paramilitary-Mage Caste for the “modern” world, by which is typically meant: In Japan/Our World, not the NarutoVerse.
Yes I know I’m being pedantic, but to say “modern” implies “past” and while there’s lots of that in Naruto, there’s also:
90’s Telephones (why doesn’t the Hokage have one in their office??? Landline is pretty darn secure.)
90’s Electricity
Computers (90’s era, but clunky things with limited functionality but can store data)
Floppy Disks to go with the above
Security cameras
Polaroids (again, 90’s era)
The cutting-edge-of-its-time (90’s again) radio collars
Industrial production of steel (how? We don’t know. But they can build 80’s-90’s skyscrapers, somehow.)
Steam engine (not that impressive or modern, but like, Where Are The Trains. We got 90’s steam boats in Kiri, but no locomotives? How? Why?)
Medical devices. Oh the list I could make about that. All like mid- late 90’s, at least in Konoha/Orochimaru and Co. The iron lung does not exist, replaced by stately 1999-2002 ventilators. (Kimmimaro) The concept of IV nutrition exists and is applicable, even if Kishi did an absolutely abysmal job of demonstrating that. (On Kakashi) (the reality: So. Many. Ports.) That little innovation didn’t exist until 1982, and didn’t actually work until 1996. (Because figuring out how to synthesize metabolic fats and proteins was really hard); you’ve got Ostomy tubes and bags that belong in 1995, (Kimmimaro again) and don’t even get me started on Lab equipment. Do you know how long it took to produce incubators that didn’t take up a quarter of a room? Do you have any idea what the world of cloning looked like in the 90’s? (Actually, it was a lot more advanced at that point than it is in Naruto, which is stuck in like, 1980’s with that notion).
And I could go on!
And there is just as many examples of the inverse, too, where there’s things juxtaposed to the past level. Example:
Psychiatric care. Granted we don’t see a lot of that outside of Kakashi’s little stint, but it is very 1940’s-1950’s type BS.
Similar to that, most the stuff in the Interrogation Unit. From attitudes to technology, but mostly in just the very weird, 1930-1950’s way the whole thing operates. Kishimoto did not do his research there, very obviously (Torture does not work like that), but nonetheless they give me Nazi vibes. (Well, Inaba and Ibiki do, respectively). That part might be intentional, but it still doesn’t really make sense in the bigger scope. (Why doesn’t the village know things when they are a SHINOBI VILLAGE. A postwar village no less! Make it make sense Kishi!)
Some elements of medicine. There’s a very weird divide there, between synthesized chemicals that are complex poisons, which SHOULD mean complex medicines exist, (because the only difference between medicine and poison is the dose and many toxins have medical value) and the demonstration of this, which relies upon herbalism. I suppose both those would exist in a Shinobi’s world, but there’s a bizarre element of “only the bad guys actually have good medicine” going on, which again is a very 1940-1950’s thing.
Idk, I feel like “modern” sort of fits? But not entirely. Because fundamentally the NarutoVerse is a completely separate dimension, a twisted alternate reality that is very removed from our own yet also very like it.
Gahhhhh the world building in this series is hot, messy garbage 🤣
I would love to see an AU where it’s more homogeneous, like smack-dab postwar all over the board. Or even just bring her up to the 90’s. That would be actual modern-NarutoVerse.
But using Modern to mean “Our World” has always just been a small thing to bugger me. Use what you want, because I don’t think the term is going anywhere, but if I can’t share this anywhere else I can share it here.

This chocolate was too bitter.
Shouma wanted to make everyone happy. But this episode made me felt miserable.
The last time I felt this terrible was when Sento accidentally killed Aoba, before the reveal that Bugster virus patients could be revived and Zero-One final. Not even Taka-sen’s Christmas Death made me felt this way.
All those events happened when the episodes was on double digits. We were still on the sixth episode.
What made it worse was that it happened so realistically. Nothing dramatic happened. No depressive rains, no dying in your arms, no last words. Today was sunny, and you were laughing with your friends while enjoying a cup of tea, then, you got a called about your loved one’s death and everything lost their colours.
Shioya had the most common sense amongst the cast and he often acted as voice of reason to Hanto. So, like when they locked Horobi up in the basement, he had to die.
Was Hanto going to carry Shioya’s broken corpse everywhere?
I did not expect to see a Showa Rider element again. I guessed, as long as the word Kaizou Ningen was not use, it was fine?
Would Hanto experienced bad side effect from the implant? Komura-sensei was already so ruthless this early, so the possibility was high.
They excused Karizaki’s behaviour by his father implanting his inner demon in him. I wondered if they going to make excuse too for Suga’s shadiness. I hoped not.
I thought Fuwa was wild, Hanto was even wilder.
Was Gochizos used by Valen go to ‘heaven’?
Orange Stomach did not seem that interest with family business. I wondered if he or Dente going to invent a way to revive the already processed humans.
This show was not Black Sun or Amazons, so I was sure Toei going to find a way to revive those humans, lest they found themselves on the receiving end of the parents’ wrath. I just hoped they would do it in a way that would not disturbed the established plotline.
Keeping the story stable was KR writers’ greatest challenges. Many had failed. Let us hope Komura-sensei could pass this hurdle and continued to deliver a good (and painful) story.

Ok so I wanna hear your thoughts on the final fight specifically. I really adored how after all this hyping up of Ultimate Kuuga’s destructive power, rather than it being something flashy and explosive, it was… down to earth. Brutal. Just two dudes punching the shit out of each other in a way that was Difficult To Watch.
The final battle of Shin Rider felt like a callback to this, honestly. Just heartwrenching impact after heartwrenching impact. It’s not big or extravagant, but instead it shows that having to fight… sucks.
Sorry, I think about this particular fight A LOT.
YEAH YEAH i completely get what you mean. your buffer worked - i didn't see this at all until i had already finished the show and compared it to that one part in black (you know, The One). i think, as i chew through everything that happened in this show, that there's more i have to say about kuuga on the whole than i've managed to render right now, mostly about how it feels like they did really manage to distill a lot of the core feelings i've gotten from showa rider into something new and interesting and fun that they could do now that it's in vogue and possible to have the episodes a little more interconnected than they were able to get away with (sans a couple areas, like the 4-episode demon world stretch in black rx) previously.
the setup to the fight really worked for me. i think it was the right choice to watch the last 3 episodes on the same night so that we could start with ichijou, just some guy, just some human guy being the one to kill... that rose lady. you know the one. the one who has been around as a boss from the start of the show and who had a couple faceoffs before with him? you know, the one who, with her dying breaths, told ichijou that she realized humans could be equals to them, capable of the same destruction that they were? that she wished she could have faced off with ichijou again? that lady.
they had been setting the grongi and at least godai up as equals for a while there - there's the obvious stuff with the back and forth "i need to get stronger!" moments but the one in specific that stood out to me was when tsubaki was doing autopsies on the bodies that they were able to recover and he was like oh shit... these guys look just like kuuga on the inside?
kamen rider has this feeling running through it, this essence of "that could have been me, but it wouldn't have been me, couldn't have been me, because i love humanity too much, but i can only say that because after experiencing this, i'm still me," which is an odd feeling to put into words, but i think it's one that many people are familiar with. to come out of something on the other side feeling worn down and miserable but victorious and look back and see other people who have been through the same or similar things to you and for whatever reason, came out the other end differently.
hongo escaping being borged before they were able to complete his brainwashing, yuki being the one picked as a scapegoat and therefore realizing that what was going on around him was wrong, shigeru just straight up being confident enough to manage to trick people into borging him, nobuhiko being chosen as the favorite son just because he was the one who stuck around for a while leaving kotaro able to make his own decisions about what is right and wrong. these are all things that each of the riders did have an active say in, but they're also a bit dependent on luck to fully and correctly pull off. and i think godai also kind of picked up on that vibe. he's both reassuring people that everything is going to be okay because he believes in himself and his love for the people around him, and he does, but he still plans for the off chance that things can go wrong by telling ichijou how to kill him should things really go to shit.
that's it think the thing i took away most from this fight. the visuals are great, the whole thing just feels raw and uncomfortable to watch, which it should! this is the reality of everything that's been going on here behind the suits. we should feel glad that kamen rider doesn't have to fight anymore once this is over. kuuga flirts with this level of reality through the show and they completely full on commit to it at the end. but i think everything leading up to it and the context of the fight really helped me to put my finger this feeling that i've been feeling through the entirety of the show.
so. there you go. those are my stream of consciousness thoughts the morning after finishing kuuga... so much more to think about later!!
#you can see why i had to sleep on this one lol#it's a feeling that's been on my mind a lot recently for various reasons that i will not be discussing. so when i noticed it#i was like OH SHIT!! THAT'S IT!#making spaghetti

watching showa genroku rakugo shinjuu having NO idea that ill start going batshit over farewell my concubine again. its unreal how many parallels they have.
1. theyre set literally during the same general period (or at least the flashbacks for showa genroku), a period of social upheaval, war, and the effect it has on traditional art. leading to parallels such as censorship of art, and the “dying of art” due to modern entertainment. also entertaining japanese troops. lol.
2. dieyi/yakumo (8th) - WHERE THE FUCK DO I START. let’s go off literally the most BASIC details: both sons of a prostitute, who because of their physical “deformity” was thrust into apprenticing and training for a traditional art as their only way to survive. struggles with gender roles and achieving comfort and success in playing female characters.
3. xiaolou/sukeroku - loud boisterous protectors who grow up with their partner. strongheaded, and they just literally have the same vibes idk how to say more about it. later gives up on their art for their marriage (and potential child). falls in love with a prostitute.
4. miyokichi/juxian - prostitutes who run away with their lover. critical of their partner continuing the art. kinship with dieyi/yakumo (though yakumo/miyokichi’s case is romantic and dieyi/juxian is literally hostility bc of self recognition through the other. one day ill make a list detailing the parallels between them.) strong and confident woman who meets a tragic end.
5. xiao si/konatsu - child that was raised by a combination of the 3 ppl above. swears revenge to dieyi/yakumo albeit for different reasons. a deep passion for the art.
6. something something lover’s suicide. concubine yu. juxian. sukeroku and miyokichi.
7. “you said it’d be for a lifetime.” // “please don’t leave rakugo behind.”
i didnt spend 5 years being extremely mentally ill over farewell my concubine for nothing! 💖
bonus: wanna go to a brothel bro?

FULL IMAGE PLUS A SIDE STORY BELOW THE CUT!!
(sorry it’s sideways and also that I didn’t actually get to do a ton of art bc he took WAYYY longer than expected and my iPad was dying)
SIDE STORY TIMEEE In an au where ONLY Bailey was a siren, I feel like he’d have been caught (bc he’s too curious about humans, more so because he wants to know if his dinner can feel emotions.) and would’ve been kept in an aquarium so that marine biology/ichthyology students like Jasper would’ve seen him and soon the whole gang would start visiting him, along with Tonio ((mod’s bf!!)) who he’d probably have a huge crush on for some weird siren reason. He starts visiting the aquarium every day and Bailey starts going absolutely insane bc what kind of coward was he, letting glass get in the way of his human crush? He breaks the glass, and attempts to drag himself to Toni but starts suffocating (man’s got gills) so Sora, Jasper, Finn and Toni have to carry this massive fish-bitch to go stay in a bathtub temporarily before dumping him into some giant freshwater lake nearby lmao (and if you’re wondering about Pebble, he’s still a demon and shares a similar interest in Toni ;) )

I just imagine Fury going full Mechagodzilla 3/Kiryu from Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla and Tokyo S.O.S (Japan has alot of Kaiju movies) when Kiryu went berserk because they had a flashback of Riders final moments.
Backstory for Kiryu aka Mechagodzilla 3 Millennium Era :
This version of Mechagodzilla was made by the GDF The Godzilla Defense Force using the bones of the original Godzilla which was killed using the oxygen destroyer.
during the test trial Mechagodzilla went berserk the moment it saw Godzilla it had a flashblack of when it was killed by the oxygen destroyer and went on a rampage destroying multiple buildings before shutting down due to running out of power.
You may be wondering where's Mechagozilla 1 and 2 for those who dont watch kaiju/monster movies:
Mechagodzilla 1 the original and 2 Showa Era:
Its was made by aliens....it was made by fucking aliens.
They came in with Mechagodzilla disguised as Godzilla to invade Japan until the real Godzilla showed up. long story short it got destroyed after Godzilla turned himself into a fucking magnet and ripped its head off (don't question it)
After it got destroyed they rebuilt it and got another monster which was sleeping at the bottom of the ocean for help. during the battle its head got ripped off but instead of being out off commission they learnt from last time and it had a secondary head.
they thought a human interface was a good idea when rebuilding it and they didnt account the human interface would kill itself to stop them, Mechagodzilla became a sitting duck and got blown the fuck up again.
Mechagodzilla/Super Mechagodzilla Heisei Era:
This one was made by the GDF using technology scavenged from Mechakinghidorah (after it pulled a whole if i'm dying your coming with me and dunked itself with Godzilla into the ocean) to combat Godzilla and finally put a stop to Godzilla destroying Japan (every single fucking month like goddamn it would be fucking annoying having to rebuild half the fucking city every month because a giant lizard had a temper tantrum for humans being fucking idiots)
First battle: Godzilla turns into a Power outlet and Mechagodzilla puts a fork into it killing itself and having to get flown back to base for repairs.
Second battle and Final battle: Mechagodzilla gets double teamed by a giant fucking pterodactyl (Rodan) and Godzilla before it decides to cheat and put the Ghostbusters proton pack on and start blasting.
It pulls out its taser fork again and shoots it into Godzilla again and this time it turns Godzilla into another victim of the "american health system" (got crippled and cant pay the hospitalbill) until Rodan pulls some Darksouls 3 Father Ariendal Sister Friede type bullshit and activities the boss second phase.
And Godzilla proceeds to turn into a proton pack and cross streams with Mechagodzilla before it get overwhelmed and forgets what a proton stream does to a Robot before it gets blown the fuck up.
(Sorry for the rant im a nerd when it comes to giant robots and monsters.)
This is awesome but I'm keeping it real with you I saw a Dark Souls 3 reference and got so excited I threw up in my mouth a little and couldn't think of anything else.
