@solarpunk-0possum asked for a guide on solar yarn dyeing and I wrote this up because I’m a nutcase. It’s long but hopefully informative.
Its actually really easy and there’s cool things you can do with it. Chemknits on YouTube has some fun projects too, their channel is the ultimate dye channel imo. But I’m going to give you a crash course here because I like doing that.
Let’s start with fiber.
For acid dyes it needs to be a protein based fiber, it can be a blend, so wool and nylon for example but depending on the fiber it may look slightly different. I almost exclusively use Wool2Dye4 platinum sock for my yarn base which is 75% super wash merino wool and 25% nylon but for more environmentally friendly dyeing, as super washing isn’t great, you can go non super wash wool or other natural protein based fiber. Paradise Fibers and KnitPicks also have white yarn bases. There are other companies but most won’t let you buy single skeins as they are geared toward commercial dyers. I buy in bulk cause I do a lot of dyeing.
If you get a non super wash wool yarn it can felt but this process minimizes that risk significantly. Handling it a lot, stirring or squeezing and temp changes are what cause wool to felt. I also dye 100% wool top and roving in many varieties with this same method. This technique is great for that because your felting risk is super low since you aren’t stirring or changing temps until you rinse and even then the temp change is a lot less and your fiber stays together.
If you do a fiber like silk it is going to react a lot differently so you want to play around to get the hue you want. Silk is notoriously tricky but gorgeous.
Plant based fibers need a different totally different dye and mordant though, I’ll get into that later but if you have a hemp, linen, bamboo or viscose or something you can still do this. Even synthetic fibers like white acrylic or nylon can be dyed just needs a different dye and I can’t speak to the efficacy of solar as I’ve never dyed them but nylon blend works so I don’t see why not.
Now to the dyes.
Acid reactive dyes are dyes that react and bind to fiber once acid is introduced to the party. I use white vinegar or citric acid. You can buy acid dyes from companies like Jacquard or Dharma Trading, there are several companies but these are my personal favs. Jacquard has a red, blue and yellow set that is great to start with as you mix your own colors using basic color wheel principles.
You don’t have to buy special dye though!!
You can dye with Kool Aid or Easter egg dyeing pellets or food coloring (gel or liquid), cake sprays, bath bomb colors etc. It just won’t be as color and light fast. But if you are just playing around it’s super fun and safe and I have skeins that kept their colors for years no issue. Also using those food based dyes can be done with children where I wouldn’t with acid dyes.
For acid dyes you want to use equipment that won’t ever touch food again, so you need specific jars and spoons and such that are just for dyeing. I have dedicated dyeing equipment (stock pot, crock pot, tongs, spoons, etc) but I purchased all of it at thrift shops for super cheap.
I also use a N95 mask or respirator whenever I open my dye powder jars to not breath in particulates. I also wear glasses or safety goggles. I wear a mask for ANY powder even Kool Aid. It’s just good PPE. I am bad about wearing gloves though….I should be better. Wear gloves.
For this project as far as equipment all you need are glass mason jars. I used 2quart so the yarn could move freely but 1quart or smaller will work too you just might need to put in less yarn. You also need plastic or paper cups to mix dye in if you are mixing. If you are using an acid dye or even a Kool Aid you need gloves, and a mask.
I do recommend a scale but it is not necessary, 1 tsp of acid dye is usually = 1 gram but check the manufacturer documentation. If you are using food coloring or Kool Aid you don’t need special dedicated stuff at all.
You will also need an acid like white vinegar or citric acid. Kool Aid, and PAS easter pellets or other powdered drink mixes usually have an acid in them so you can use them as is but I always add a little extra acid for better color adhesion.
For plant based fibers you need a fiber reactive dye and a mordant like soda ash or alum . Procion has a Pro MX line. You can also dye with natural materials like indigo, madder, onion skins, marigold, avocado etc. Some people recommend soaking or boiling your fiber in your chosen mordant but tbh I’ve done it just throwing everything in the jar and had good results so 🤷‍♀️. You can get soda ash and alum on Amazon or other sources like Dharma Trading. For plant based dyeing you just put the leaves or roots depending on the material in the jar with everything. Natural dyeing takes A LOT longer than acid or fiber reactive dyes for solar dyeing but it’s still fun and MUCH better for environment.
For synthetic fibers like acrylic you have to use something like Rit. I don’t do this very often (or at all really) and have never solar dyed acrylic as I just buy acrylic yarn in the color I want when I use it, but I assume it would work the same? I cannot guarantee it though. I’ve also seen people use acrylic paint mixed with water to dye yarn, it just changes the texture slightly so your mileage may vary with synthetics. I don’t recommend using them though. You can get 100% wool, linen, bamboo etc at craft stores pretty easily now a days.
So now that you have your dye and your fiber let’s get dyeing!
Prepping the Fiber
Weigh your yarn. You can use a kitchen scale. This will help you figure out how much dye to use to get the shade you want. This calculator for acid dyes is great for figuring out how much dye stock solution you need. For Kool Aid or Food Coloring it’s just vibes based for me but someone has probably figured out the amounts. We’ll get there.
To prevent tangling I recommend tying your yarn off in the skein at regular intervals. You can see my purple yarn ties in the pic below. I also use reusable zip ties. If you buy yarn the skeins usually come pre-tied but I skein up my own yarn so yeah. I also will put a zip tie or large piece of yarn at either end to keep it orderly. You can also just put entire cakes wound up from a ball winder, or an entire skein from the store in the jar too though, you’ll get different effects from the natural resist of it being wound up but it’s super fun to see what happens.
Soak your yarn, if you want more color variation you can do it dry, that’s often how tonals and semi solids are dyed as the dye binds or “strikes” to the fiber at different rates so feel free to experiment. You can also presoak your yarn in an acid and water mixture for different effects as well. It’s all about experimentation! Even your dye can do things differently depending on if the dye “breaks”, that’s where different pigments make up the dye and will strike at different temps, the Purple Pop I used in this example is a dye that will break into blues and reds or different purples if I do different things with the heat. For natural you can soak in your mordant like alum or soda ash. You probably want to get more detailed instructions on amounts though, I just look it up when I do it as I never remember and it takes me forever to gather enough plant material so it’s only a once or twice a year thing.
In this example I soaked my yarn in plain water for about 30 minutes before I added any dye as I was going for a solid.
Tumblr media
While your yarn is soaking you can mix your dyes!
Mixing Dye:
If you are using acid dyes you can add your dye powder directly to the water you are dying in until it looks like you want. I dip pieces of paper towel into it to get an idea of what it looks like color wise, or what I do for greater precision with different color saturations and to not waste dye is mix a dye stock solution.
It sounds scarier than it is. A dye stock solution is suspending the dye molecules in water to make a concentration of dye. My dye stocks are 1 part to 100 for a 1% solution. So for Dharma dyes I mix 1 gram (1 part) to 100ml hot water (100 parts). Once I have my dye stock mixed I can use that to determine how many milliliters of dye I want to introduce to my yarn. The calculator I linked can tell you how much for the depth of shade you want but for an example if I want a mid saturation at 2% for a 50g skein I would use 100ml of dye stock. If I want a much lighter shade at .5% I would only use 25ml. If I want just the regular color at 1% I use whatever the fiber weighs in ml, so 50ml for a 50g skein. The skeins above are 2% of Sour Apple and Purple Pop except for the lighter green which was .5% of Sour Apple. If I wanted pastels I usually do like .025%.
The calculation is Weight of Fiber x Depth of Shade for a 1% dye stock solution. You can make stronger dye stocks like 2 grams per 100ml for a 2% but I find just using 1% much easier cause math is annoying but the calculator will let you do that too.
For Kool Aid or Food Coloring just mix your color in water and dip in pieces of paper towel until it’s approximately the shade you want. It’s not 100 accurate as paper towel is different than your fiber but is pretty close, or at least gives you an idea if you have a deep shade or a pastel shade. If it’s too dark add more water, too light add more dye.
For natural dye you can’t really determine what shade you’ll get as plants have too many variables, there are some general guidelines for most common dye materials that can give you an idea though and generally less material is lighter and more material is darker.
The Full Process:
Weigh your yarn if you are trying to get a more precise depth of shade. Then you can use the calculations above to determine how much dye. If you are just playing you can skip this. If you bought skeins they usually tell you if it’s 100g or 25g etc so no need to weigh.
I filled my jars with plain water and put the yarn in (make sure it’s loose, I made the mistake with my first batch last weekend of accidentally leaving it twisted in the skein and it formed a resist, I just overdyed and still got some pretty skeins so nothing lost but if you want white spots or different depts of shade throughout feel free to add some resist by leaving it skeined or tying off sections like tie dye!).
When filling your jars remember we need room at the top to add dye and acid so just fill until the yarn moves freely, you can always top it off after. Can you tell I’ve made this mistake?
I let it soak for about 30 minutes while I prepared my dye stock.
Once my dye was mixed and my yarn had soaked I determined how much dye I wanted to use. Then just add the dye into the jar. I let my yarn sit in the dye without acid for another 30 minutes. I put the lid on and shook it up to make sure it penetrated all the yarn. Again, if you want different effects you can add the acid in now, don’t mix it, etc but for a solid you want as even coverage as possible.
Then I added the acid. I used 1/4 cup acid cause that’s what I always use for some reason but you can add just 1 or 2 tablespoons. I used white vinegar. I usually use a citric acid mix with water but I ran out. It doesn’t matter the vinegar smell fades.
I put my lid on, gave it a good mix and I was done. Now for the sun part.
Tumblr media
What makes the dye bond to fiber is a proportion of acid, heat and time. With kettle dyeing in a pot on the stove or similar you introduce heat rapidly but in this case it’s not so much about the temp as it is the UV and time. You don’t have to put your jars in direct sunlight outside, a sun facing window is fine too. Your jars do need to be clear though.
I put mine outside. You can still solar dye if it’s overcast or even if it’s kinda cold it just might take more time.
Then just leave it! You’ll know it’s done when the water is clear, the yarn can make it appear like it’s not clear but pool it at the top of the jar to check on it.
This is called exhausting the dye, all the dye molecules have found a friend in the fiber and adhered to it. Some dyes do not exhaust completely, either because there is too much dye for the weight of fiber and all the molecules have already found their friend, or because of the dye itself. The Purple Pop is really bad about exhausting. If it’s been several days and you aren’t seeing a change it may be done, in that case just take your yarn out but add another skein in with some more acid, no need to waste it, you’ll get a lighter shade. I usually have a yarn mop for collecting non-exhausted dye. I just throw it in and see what happens, sometimes with many different colors.
The length of time you leave it out depends on a lot of factors, natural plant based dyes can take months, these acid based dyes took two days in Central FL but honestly the greens were exhausted in like 18 hours and the purple I didn’t see any change so I just took it out and put another skein in, its cooking now. I usually give my acid or Kool Aid dye projects no more than a week cause I’m impatient and always have had good results. Plant based I’ll leave for months.
After you remove your yarn you can dump the water. If I dump it outside I add a little baking soda to neutralize the acid, or just let it sit for awhile. I don’t like to dump it near water sources like wells or any food based gardens but have used it to water flowers and stuff. If using Kool Aid or food coloring you can do whatever. I’ve also reused my water for another dye if it’s totally clear or if I don’t care if there’s a bit leftover.
Then wash and rinse your yarn! I use Kookabura Wool Wash but you can use anything like Dawn dish soap. You may have a bit of bleeding depending on the color or none at all, just rinse and repeat until the water runs clear. If it’s a lot of bleeding and you are washing and rinsing and it just won’t run clear you can steam set it by wrapping it in plastic wrap while still wet and microwaving it or steaming it in a steamer basket like you would a vegetable. If you microwave just don’t burn your yarn! I do like 30 second intervals in the microwave until it’s hot to the touch but I rarely have to do this.
For non super wash wool or wool top/rocing that will felt you need to do this gently. Don’t run water directly on the fiber, handle it as little as possible, don’t introduce extreme temperature changes etc. The temp is less of a concern for solar though, that mostly applies to kettle where you go from hot to cold.
Then hang to dry! If you tied off your skein it should be tangle free, but you may need to shake or comb it a bit to get rid of curly bits. I use a dedicated salad spinner to really get it dry first then hang and it’s usually totally dry in a few hours.
And that’s it! Hope this helped, sorry it’s so long.

to be fair, weaving and dyeing and all these things i do aren't super accessible either but i feel the barrier to, say, spin yarn with a drop spindle or use a frame loom aka a picture frame to weave something or naturally dye some yarn using some onion skins in your kitchen is less severe than that of trying to access a 3d printer or laser cutter or the knowledge to operate them or a computer that can run 3d modeling software without blue screening for most people, and environmental impact of working with wool and wood equipment is something that is more manageable than using petrochem plastic resin that will literally never decompose and all of this complex computerized equipment relies on rare metals that are mined in africa and latin america by companies that destroy local communities and the land and cause irreparable damage
this isn't to slam using any of these methods or processes for making things, i've used 3d printers and worked with plastic resins and likely will in the future, i use computers, i'm typing this on my phone, i play video games etc but like that's my point, this stuff is kind of inescapable and it's so entrenched in how many of us esp those of us in the first world function day to day. there is value in the idea of taking the time to disconnect from all of that for a while, in processes that have nothing to do with the hyper-online digital tech world, in alternate ways of making art and finding entertainment and in manufacturing goods, to lessen our consumption if we can, to slow things down if we have the chance to do so, but many people are resistant to that idea or dismiss it as boomer talk or being a luddite or they get overly defensive.
my point is that the current arts industry landscape doesn't value artists who choose to work with materials and processes that provide somewhat of a respite from all of this, it doesn't value traditional craft and it can't bc the way the global economy is structured under capitalism requires making more things constantly and faster and for cheaper, it all relies on forever increasing profit margins. it does not value craft because it does not value labour. and valuing craft, and valuing slow processes and the physical labour involved and thinking about environmental impacts and the lifespan of an object, is fundamentally linked to valuing the labour and lives of the working class, and of the working people of the global south, and the environment.
the same tech companies that exploit and outsource labour to underpaid and slave labour in the global south and exploit blue collar workers in the global north and destroy the environment are funding the arts across the world. so many textile designers and illustrators and graphic designers i know have worked for google and amazon and banks and all of these fast fashion retailers, that's where the money is. these companies all have arts divisions, their money gets invested in arts programming talking about AI and digital economies and they get them to make art about sustainability and diversity and using all of this cool new radical tech theyre making while they simultaneously poison rivers in the amazon and manufacture their clothes in collapsing warehouses in bangladesh and send death squads to terrorize people in central africa. it's all connected, none of this is new, individual solutions to these problems don't exist, etc etc etc and we are all implicated in this whether willfully or not.
but on a micro level i just wish that craft was valued more and there were more opportunities for craftspeople in the arts, that there were more spaces for people who don't have any interest in working with tech or digital art, and traditional craftspeople esp those in the global south have the time and space to labour humanely and that craft labour is valued, that slow work is valued, and not for profit reasons but because it's so fundamental to the human experience and its necessary that we reassess the role of craft and analogue processes if we are to actually address climate change and the impacts of mass manufacturing in its current form on people and the planet. but all of this is a symptom of a greater problem (capitalism, and imperialism which is the highest stage of capitalism), it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

I've been wondering for awhile, but between you and Umei, how much of the worldbuilding and information on How Things Work in all the stories is stuff you knew already and stuff you spent a lot of time looking up and investigating? Because it's crazy how detailed all these fics are and its amazingly good
Hmm.. it varies by topic? Generally is it common knowledge (ie does it exist in that world/cannon), hobby knowledge, personal knowledge, inferred knowledge (ie if this is this then that implies that), specific knowledge and what’s needed to be known by the character/audience that determines it. There’s stuff that gets left out that we figure out and I’ll give an example of it later.
Some things we can’t get out of researching, like Umei had to research a lot of the historical customs. Who’s allowed to wear what (status symbols), levels of formality, appropriate behavior... That’s specific knowledge. Specific knowledge that has to be known by the characters even. Because you can’t hand wave everything. Plot says otherwise.
Umei probably didn’t have to do much research on the textile manufacturing -the basics are the same world over, get materia, spin thread etc- because she does knit and it’s not hard to find a book on it or more specific all kinds of sites. As an example, yesterday Iz went to Dollar Tree to buy bags to stick some already bought Christmas presents in and found a nice book called The Practical Spinner’s Guide: Silk by Sara Lamb. Which covers what silk is, varieties, properties, blends, how to spin, equipment to spin it on, dying, working with different dyes, weaving, knitting, other applications and how to care for silk in the first hundred pages. At the Dollar Tree. Where everything is a single dollar (and tax). As Umei knits, she might have already had a resource like that handy. That’s hobby knowledge.
As a different example, let’s see... Squalo. Squalo knows sword techniques. But sword techniques are made specific for each blade type. So his adapted longsword using a technique designed for a katana in KHR canon? There’s going to be a difference in effect because the blade length differs, the shape differs and he’s not even holding his sword technically. It’s common sense if you think about it as you can’t use a rapier like a greatsword but Izzy knew about it from personal knowledge. Iz likes her swords. Izzy may have beat various relatives with wooden mock-ups of different types of swords when she likes thirteen or so. To be fair, they had swords too. Personal knowledge.
Then we get to inferred knowledge, which is based on the common knowledge of the world. Like Fire Temple has Monks; Kakuzu kills one of Asuma’s fellow Guardians. So what religion? Well, Hashirama names his techniques off of Buddhist things and the Uchiha have the Shinto covered but Shinto has Priests. So he had to be Buddhist. Buddhism must exist in the Elemental Nations. That one is Easy. Umei may not have figured it out like that but it means that Buddhist philosophy exists.
Compared to ‘Uzumaki sealing affinity’ which has all kinds of doozy implications. This is Izzy’s thought process about it: We get told that it exists, they were great at it, it was their specialty. We don’t get told a single bit of How or Why. We see fuinjutsu used to store things, we see it used to heal, we see it used to mutilate, we see it used to protect, we see it used to contain, we see it break the boundaries of time and space. These examples we see are from Konoha -mostly- who gets their sealing knowledge from the Senju and thus the Uzumaki. So how did the Uzumaki get the knowledge to do all that? Well, clearly they built up on what previous seal masters had done like Minato with Tobirama’s hirashin. So obviously they have an archive, they have a system for that archive to be useful and the work within to be understood,so they have a bloody School! A school that is used from an early age! Not apprentices, but classes full of students learning fuinjutsu. Which still doesn’t tell you How or Why they learned fuinjutsu or continued with it to make it the Uzumaki clan’s signature. Until you realize that they live on an island -limited space- and so have to use ships -limit space- and that based on where they have to be -somewhere between Kiri and Kumo, the villages with the second and arguably third best seal masters (ask me later that is)- they’re geographically at risk of typhoons. How do I know that? Ame. Ame is practically always drowning in rain, so how is all that moisture in the air there? Air currents push clouds against the mountains, squeezing it out before it gets in Kaze no Kuni or even parts of whatever Earth Nation is. So the wind has to blow in from the ocean. If the world of the Elemental Nations is similar enough to ours then the paths the storms travel would be similar -planetary rotation happens at different speeds depending on location from equator- so assuming that the fucked up peninsula that Fire mostly dominates and Tea is on one end up are geographically similar enough for that to be like Florida turned sideways... Anyway, so weather patterns says typhoons exist and Uzu is at risk of them, which is a great reason to have barrier fuinjutsu. Because it’s not just the wind but the water. Uzu’s an island; they can’t risk what farming land they have so the crops and animals need protection. It’s not just the flooding risk but the salt making the land less arable. Food is a concern. Other goods are also a concern. They probably take a lot of mission pay in foodstuffs and things they just don’t have the land to farm. What would they get paid for regularly and in high demand that could potentially require fuinjutsu? Taking care of typhoons. How? Fuinjutsu. What makes the storm a typhoon/hurricane is the amount of energy gathered and moving; not how fast the storm moves but by how much energy it is blowing out. Containment seal to siphon off excess energy -natural chakra exists and heat is energy too- and reduce the Cat 5 to a Cat 1 or 2? Why yes, various island nations that exist south of Fire and Fire would pay much for that, annually. Also an economic reason that Kumo and Kiri later destroy Uzu because with Uzu saving Fire money by preventing massive storm damages, Fire has more money for its shinobi and other war endeavors and while it wasn’t a problem for the Uzumaki when everyone was still warring clans time, with the shinobi clans unified into villages competing on a national scale... sabotaging the enemy nations by making them have to pay for damages natural disasters could cause is a very valid tactic. Hence why fuinjutsu was also the downfall of the Uzumaki; blaming it on the existence of jinchuriki and the Uzumaki as a threat to them is just laziness.
Oh and all that past the ‘Uzumaki have a school of fuinjutsu’ is not needed to be known by the various characters in Direct Thee to Peace so probably won’t be mentioned ever in fic. But this does explain why the Uzumaki within the Senju have more formal experience and expect Hashirama and Tobirama to understand what ‘as formal as with the Daimyo’ means because the Uzumaki obviously have various Daimyo as clients seeing as how they’re protecting various islands and parts of Fire from typhoons. It also means that while the Uzumaki can’t feed themselves without said missions but that doesn’t mean that they’re poor. It is the Senju that are the poor cousins and it shows rather blatantly sometimes. Which Izzy tries not to laugh about too much. It’s mean to Tobirama.

Short review about Omniblend: A Contract Food Manufacturing
Whether you're maintenance of your wellbeing, a household cook, then a smoothie-shop proprietor, or merely big into DIY, a priceless add-on to your kitchen is an excellent blender. But just because it is invaluable does not indicate you want to pay for any cost tag for it.Power - This really may perhaps not be the amount thing to look for in a blender, however nonetheless, it surely does help together with everything you may desire to utilize it to get. Much more energy means you may not have to prep your foods too much when building a smoothie - do not cut your fruits into portions let the blender do it personally. Of course, if your concoction is thick, a blender will be able to interrupt all the way through it. Such a thing over 1HP must do well.Blade design - All of the horsepower from the entire world doesn't mean much if the blade layout isn't great. The blades will want to be able to produce a vortex, pulling every thing from the blender down to them to become boiled into a thousand pieces. Additionally, it is great to have blades that get close to the bottom of the pitcher, so and so food pieces don't get stuck inside that mystery zone in between the blades and also the bottom of the pitcher.Has that a plunger - Now, I understand a number of these premium superior blenders available claim they don't want plungers in any respect. Of course, when that were authentic, it would seem amazing. But from that which I have noticed, no blender can promise that it does not need some josteling. Possessing a plunger that could jostel the foodstuff inside the toaster whilst the grinder is operating is a huge - With and the cabinets overhead can be a real nuisance! I really can't consider how many times I'd have knocked within my blender if it did not fit underneath my cabinets. And knocking over a blender while it is running will not be fun indeed.Has a good warrantee - In case you will find something you wish to last for long haul, you should really make sure it has a wonderful warrantee. For the purposes, let's state it should have no less than the usual 7-year warrantee.Right! That's really the matter? After all, even if money was no object, it'd not be any issue locating a bean that satisfied all those requirements. But discovering one who is going to do that without breaking up the financial institution is not the same story entirely. That's where the Omniblend arrives right into playwith. By fulfilling all previously, and costing at just $279 67146, this is genuinely the ideal blender for your money. Over the last year, the momentum of food-waste decrease is now a major concern within a global, national and business degree. At the USA , the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and also Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the U.S. food-waste Challenge"to direct an essential change in how we consider and handle meals and meals waste within this nation." Business leaders like the Food marketing and advertising Institute (FMI), the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and the National Restaurant Association (NRA) joined forces at the food-waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA) to discharge their first questionnaire, offering sound industry waste and recycling data across the production and retail/wholesale businesses. This info may induce companies to not only consider its commitment to food waste loss, but also the way it assigns charge towards the waste.According into the FWRA, '' the U.S. food manufacturing industry made over44.3 billion pounds of food waste at 2011. Waste generation creates lower profits during the distribution chain, resource inefficiencies and noticeable environmental influences. With food manufacturers recycling or donating 94.6% of their throw away, the has definitely seen more applications for food-waste. The greater issue today is locally identifying/reducing special solution throw away and linking it back to the ultimate price of their product.Product costs are generally calculated with materials, labor expenses and overhead. Food manufacturers use the bills of materials (BOM) to learn the cost of supplies like raw elements and packaging materials. Along with labor costs, overhead broadly speaking includes insurance facility/equipment costs, utility outlays, depreciation and salaries. Among BOM being used by all services and products At the food manufacturing industry, the cost of waste is spread. By way of example, there isn't any delineation between your garbage created also the waste associated with the bread and also by way of a niche bread. The throw away each product's total cost does not influence the cost of the item. Government and marketplace targets in 2014 will remain steadily to pressure meals manufacturers, retailers/wholesalers as well as also the restaurant/foodservice business to think about environmental and social expenses of foods items dues. Internally, the constant momentum will probably be driven with the identification of this supply of waste. Throw away tracking systems offer companies the chance to monitor specific product waste amount. By pinpointing the purchase price of a garbage flow, this info can be related by a manufacturer back to the cost of a specific product line. Ultimately, the pricing structure will then be much more accurate index of cost tag because influenced from the cost-per product. In overview, food-waste calculated onto a high level with operations makes an inefficient pricing strategy. The expense of food waste must be correlated into the product causing it.More and more plants are choosing a computer system enclosure to get a single rationale or some other, let's take a examine them and also to see if the funding would be well worth the possible saving. With most generation companies using some sort of transit system to monitor production and to run computer software programs that dominate the machines onto the manufacturing lineand they need to protect their investment from the technology, like a standard information collection position is thought to exercise at $2000 for all the PC system and a PC enclosure, in spite of this the yield on investment is documented to become as short as 4 months.Once the system cables are set up and also the Display enclosure is installed and fitted, the workstation and also the display will be fitted into the shell together with the keyboard at an telescopic drawer - why you ask?The fundamental reply is that the computer systems require protecting from your dust, grime and fluid from facilities, those of these components can decay the motherboard either the monitor, the the keyboard. The difficulty takes place when the manufacturing facility has a wash down area, as an ordinary Computer case has to be beefed up, changing light steel with stainless steel unit, normally connected with food organizations because of this manufacturing industry has to make sure their products are free of germs, that is the motivation they washdown at the least once each day. To acquire additional details on this please Go Here. Free of safety of the PC enclosure the tech will definitely neglect causing costly delays in comparison to the manufacturing line, those components offer IP56 and IP65 as conventional, these really are the opposite number of NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X (in metal ).These are metal casings that accommodate the computer monitor, processing unit and also keyboard, offering the perfect number of chilled, clean atmosphere to prolong the life of this clear answer along with minimize creation downtime. When in regards in compound manufacturers UK organizations could offer an assortment of chemical processing services both locally and even globally. Using a reputation for stellar chemical supplying, drying, and fabricating, enterprise is continuously received by united kingdom compound manufacturers . Manufacturers commonly work with pharmaceutical companies and fabric factories.Chemical fabricating plants may be responsible for creating the processes that result in creation of the item. The companies can fulfill customized orders from customers and use cutting edge engineering and advanced approaches to develop fresh services and services. The chief aim of most manufacturers will be to give clients with superior customer assistance, create the needed chemical stuff fast and economically and provide compound storage if needed, and match time lines set forth from the client.Dry powder, such as chlorine and sterile extinguishing chemicals, needs to go through a certain drying procedure. Dyeing Supplies
There are a lot of different tools you can use to dye yarn, and everyone has their own personal set of these tools that are molded to their specific preference, workflow, dyeing style, dye space, etc. I know I mentioned grabbing a stock pot in the first article I wrote here, and that’s exactly where I began back in 2012. Now, after years of trying different things and having to adapt to various dye spaces, I think I’ve tried a little bit of everything short of a full-blown professional studio setup like some of the ones I’ve seen online. So I’d like to share some different options with you that might be a good next step after the signature stock pot.
The one thing that may most dictate the tools you build with is the heat source you have available. If you’re working out of your kitchen and can use the stovetop, that’s a great place to start—that’s actually how I got started. If you’re wanting to keep the wet wool and vinegar smell out of the house and have opted to work in a garage, shed, carport, etc., then you’ll need some sturdy folding tables and a portable heat source. I’ve used both single burners and big ole turkey roasters successfully. The single burners held stock pots for small batches, and then the turkey roasters were reserved for larger batches like sweater quantities. I had a good flow, and I used that setup in a couple of the places I’ve lived—I dyed yarn in a detached garage and also on a covered porch!
Tumblr media
With my current setup, I’ve started using hotel pans on the stovetop. It uses two of the stove's burners, so it heats up pretty quickly, and the shallow shape allows a bit more control over the dyes than I've been able to get in stock pots. That was the biggest reason I liked using the turkey roasters, but hotel pans are less expensive and a bit more adaptable. But depending on your setup, the roasters might be best for you. I would encourage you to look into all of these to get an idea of space needed, cost, usability, etc.
Another important factor is water source. In a kitchen, of course, you will probably be able to use the sink—unless it’s made of something that can be stained with dye. Or in a garage you can use a utility sink. I’ve also used a hose when dyeing outside! You can get a bit creative if needed.
The easiest way to work with the dyes is to mix the powders with water ahead of time. To do that, I use a funnel and plastic squeeze bottles from Dharma Trading Co. They’re awesome for reducing any ongoing contact with the dye powders themselves (which can be messy and hazardous if you inhale them), and they make mixing colors for your formulas consistently a breeze because you’re working with liquid colors that are very easy to measure. To keep things super simple, I decided to use 8oz bottles, and then I decided how concentrated I wanted the dye solution to be. I use the same powder-to-water ratio for all of my dyes. Each dyer has their own preference, of course, but setting a standard of consistency is key to creating reproducible results.
Tumblr media
Oh, and make sure you label the bottles with the powder color so you know what to grab when! That’s a lesson I learnt the hard way, as I only had a handful of colors at the time and thought I’d be able to tell what was what easily enough…but I was wrong. So now I label every bottle with the exact dye powder name from the manufacturer. Oh, and before I forget, if you don’t want the whole artist look with very colorfully-dyed hands, rubber gloves are a good idea—for mixing the dyes AND for when you’re measuring them out later!
Speaking of consistent results, make sure you have a notebook and waterproof pen nearby for writing down what you do. I’ll talk more about that stuff in more detail in another article, but in the mean time, start writing things down!
When I’m prepping the yarn for dyeing, I like to put a zip tie through each hank to keep the loop from getting tangled as I work with it. It makes life so much simpler when you’re trying to move the yarn! Before I dye, I always pre-soak my yarn in warm water with a little bit of vinegar in it, and that requires buckets or tubs of some sort. What I use depends on how much I’m dyeing, so I have an assortment of tubs and buckets I can use.
Tumblr media
As far as the post-dyeing process, I’ve learned to have dedicated equipment for each phase. So I have a rack for yarn that’s cooling, and then I have a separate rack placed elsewhere for yarn that’s finished and drying. The reason I don’t just put it out to dry right out of the dye bath is because I like to post-soak my yarn once it’s cool. It helps get the vinegar smell out. I don’t like my customers to open their package and get hit in the face with that strong odor! But if I put it in the post-soak while it’s piping hot, the cool soak water will shock the wool and make it not-so-happy (another hard-learnt lesson). So I let it cool, then I soak it, then I squeeze it out and hang it to dry on a separate rack to help me remember what’s finished and what’s not. You’ll probably want a couple of racks handy, and you’ll want to have several bowls and buckets available to transport wet yarn and post-soak it if desired.

The rest of the main tools you'll need are common kitchen items, like hot pads, oven mitts, tongs, measuring spoons, things like that. I have a full set of tools that are only used for dyeing, just like my pots, as my professional acid dyes are not food-safe. If you’re working with food safe dyes like Kool Aid and food coloring, you can relax about this if you wish, but generally I would still recommend having a separate set for dyeing.

Now that I’ve run through everything in a rather long-winded manner (thank you for hanging in there if you’ve read all this!), I’ll include a simple shopping list for you that will zero in on the basics (other than the yarn, dye, and mordant) that will get you started. :)
Pots / pans
Measuring spoons
Tongs
Stir spoon
Paper towels
Zip ties
Oven mitts
Rubber gloves
Bowls / buckets / tubs
Racks
Plastic squeeze bottles
Note-taking supplies
From here, you can take this and tweak it to be what you need. Have fun experimenting and growing into your own personal style and workflow as a dyer! And always remember that your creativity is unique, and there will always be a place for your ideas to shine!
About Me
My name is Annie, and I’m a knitwear designer and yarn-dyer living south of Atlanta, GA. When I’m not doing yarn-related things, my other hobbies consist of reading, playing ultimate frisbee, photography, and video games.

Food Healthy Kids, Food Healthy Adults
“Food is medicine,” the old adage goes.
In medicine, it is good to remember that the most important difference between a medicine and a poison is the dosage. This applies to food. We’ve certainly seen the poor health outcomes directly and indirectly related to the US Cult of Food Overdose.
Cases in point:
US incidence of adult and childhood obesity: Epidemic. US incidence of colorectal cancer: Epidemic. US incidence of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D): Epidemic.
Each of these diseases is directly correlated to food overdose.  Worse, our sedentary lifestyles are co-conspirators. Imagine if a foreign power caused the disease and death that our sick food systems contribute to.
Bad food corporations spending millions on very effective marketing is one external villain. Our own willingness to trade our health for a mouthful of temporary feel-good is the internal villain. That means ultimately, the fix is in the mirror.
How did we get into this food-disease mess? In July 2018, the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) offered one strong answer:
According to the AAP, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) got us into this mess. Wait. What?
Referring to a GAO assessment of FDA practices, the AAP supported the conclusion that …the FDA is not able to ensure the safety of existing or new (food) additives through (their) approval mechanisms.” (emphasis added). Read the full statement here.
In the case of foodstuffs intended for (and heavily marketed toward) US kids, the FDA is doing a miserable job of protecting kids. Why would we expect otherwise? Regardless of political party in power, the FDA is led, managed, and run by the very food-for-profit and drug-for-profit businesses it is supposed to regulate. FDA appointees aren’t Moms or Dads looking out for kids, or kids looking out for their aging Moms or Dads, or everyday folks like you and me trying to make smart food choices. The FDA is run by a constant flow of people racing through the revolving door between government and industry, cashing in on your health and that of the nation with every turn of the door.
That sick mix of bad practice and corporate policy is killing us. It’s killing our kids and their parents.
America’s pediatricians are increasingly concerned for a reason. Not only are there bad chemical preservatives in foods marketed to kids, the packaging leaches harmful chemicals that leach into food. Keep in mind this is FDA permitted/approved packaging the stuff that agribusinesses use to convey convenient (aka “dead” and “processed”) food to us…and to our babies and kids.
Tumblr media
These chemicals, AAP says, “may interfere with the body’s natural hormones in ways that may affect long-term growth and development (NYT July 24, 2018, A14).
Cans, cardboard, even the “waxed” paper used—all leach chemicals into our foodstuffs.
Let’s give the pediatricians their say: “Our purposes with this policy statement and its accompanying technical report are to review and highlight emerging child health concerns related to the use of colorings, flavorings, and chemicals deliberately added to food during processing (direct food additives) as well as substances in food contact materials, including adhesives, dyes, coatings, paper, paperboard, plastic, and other polymers, which may contaminate food as part of packaging or manufacturing equipment (indirect food additives); to make reasonable recommendations that the pediatrician might be able to adopt into the guidance provided during pediatric visits; and to propose urgently needed reforms to the current regulatory process at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food additives.” These authors aren’t political hacks or corporate sharks. These are the applied scientists, the physicians, the men and women who spend 10 to 15 years of their lives just learning how to care for babies and kids…before they begin to invest the rest of their working lives doing more of that. Keywords: scientists, physicians, invest.
Tumblr media
More from the Docs: “Substantial improvements to the food additives regulatory system are urgently needed, including greatly strengthening or replacing the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) determination process, updating the scientific foundation of the FDA’s safety assessment program, retesting all previously approved chemicals, and labeling direct additives with limited or no toxicity data.” What’s all this have to do with acupuncture, especially since Enerqi is not primarily a pediatric practice? Food as medicine, food as poison, including food that has been poisoned by food additives and toxic packaging.
Nearly every patient contact at Enerqi involves some discussion of diet, eating habits, quantity of food, and most of all quality of food. You probably don’t truly need a keto diet, or an Atkins diet, or a paleo diet. But you certainly need a diet free of unregulated, untested, and harmful food additives stuffed into toxic wrappers. You can’t base your nutritional safety on a Facebook post, a YouTube video, or an advertisement, even if it comes with a coupon. You base your diet on safe, sane, simple, and sustainable food principles. Here are the ones we offer to every patient at Enerqi.
Look at your plate, every single meal.
1.    About half of that plate (bowl, slab—whatever you eat out of or off of) should be covered with fresh vegetables, fruits, green leafy goodness, with small amounts of best quality fats—like organic olive oil, coconut oil, or butter. Yes, butter. Real food. Good fats are good.
2.    Of the other half, you should have a piece of protein about the size of your own palm. Fish, meat, tofu, beans—doesn’t really matter…with these exceptions:
a.    In a very large World Health Organization (WHO) study you can read here, processed meats (bacon, sausage, deli meats) were found to be correlated with increases in colorectal cancer at amounts greater than 4 ounces per week. A good analysis of the WHO study is here.
b.    Factory farm meats feed you antibiotics, growth hormones, and poo. Buy local and organic meats, preferably from farmers you can make eye contact with. Meat protein is not essential to health although it does strike the Happy Zone for many of us. There is no reason whatsoever to eat meat every day, certainly not at every meal.
3.    With rare exception, whatever the amount of carbohydrates you normally eat, start putting one spoonful back. Unfortunately, beer is a carb (talking to you, Wisconsin); mind your suds.
4.    Anything you eat out of a paper bag, a can, or a cardboard box will be unnecessarily high in some combination of salt, sugar, carcinogenic additives, calories, and/or chemicals, including chemicals that the bought-and-paid-for FDA declares are “generally regarded as safe”—whatever the actual heck that toss-off bit of government-business codswollop means.
The pediatricians, bless them, are watching out for our kids, the next generation, the tiniest among us, whom we will all desperately need—every one of them—in 15 or 20 years. As it turns out, they’re watching out for all of us, too.
Let’s apply the same scientific rigor to our own grocery shopping, our own refrigerators, and our own plates, kids or no kids. Food is medicine. Good medicine. A necessary component to Your Radiant Good Health.

Indian Fashion Industry
Colourful fashion trends of India
With the end of the 20th century came the end of all hype which has created a more practical and pragmatic environment and has given a more stable picture of the fashion business.
In the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Indian fashion scenario wasn't exactly colorless. It was exciting, stylish and very graceful. There were no designers, models, star or fashion design labels that the country could show off. The value of a garment was judged by its style and fabric and not by who made it.
It was regarded as ever so chic and fashionable to approach any unfamiliar tailor, who could make a garment for a few rupees, providing the perfect fit, finish and style. The high society lady, who wore it, was proud for getting a good bargain and for giving her name to the end result.
Tumblr media
In 60s, tight 'kurtas', 'churidars' and high coiffures were a trend among ladies. It was an era full of naughtiness and celebration in arts and music and cinema, manifested by liberation from restriction and acceptance of new types of materials such as plastic film and coated polyester fabric.
The 70s witnessed an increase in the export of traditional materials outside the country as well as within. Hence, international fashion arrived in India much before the MTV culture with the bold colors, flower prints and bell-bottoms. Synthetics turned trendy and the disco culture affected the fashion scenario.
It was in the early 80s when the first fashion store 'Ravissant' opened in Mumbai. At that time garments were retailed for a four-figure price tag. The '80s was the era of self consciousness and American designers like Calvin Klein became popular. In India too, silhouettes became more masculine and the 'salwar kameez' was designed with shoulder pads.
With the evolution of designer stores in Mumbai, the elegant fashion design culture was a trend among Indians along with their heavy price tags. No doubt that a garment with a heavy price tag was at the bottom stage of fashion. But clients immediately transformed into the high fashion fold where they were convinced that that the word 'elegant fashion design culture' means, it had to have a higher price tag.
Garments were sold at unbelievable prices only because the designers had decided to get themselves noticed by making showy outfits and getting associated with the right shows, celebrities and events.
Later, fashion shows shifted to competitive events each attempting to out-do the other in theme, guest list and media coverage. For any newcomer, the fashion business was the number one professional art that time.
In the 90's, the last decade of the millennium, a move towards the drastic pairing down returned with ethnic wears (Today, ethnic wear market in India is accounted to Rs. 9000 crore). This led to the decline and the recession, the push to sell at any cost and keep staying in the limelight. With heavy cut throat competition and sound awareness of the client, the inevitable occurred. The price tags, which had once reached at a peak, began their downside journey.
At those times the downturn was not only being experienced in the price tags of the garments, but also in the business of fashion shows. More models, choreographers, make-up men, hairstylists and designers streamed down into their business.
The fun and party time in the Indian fashion scenario had not ended with this, but continued. It was a point, where it reached at a certain steady level and from there, in the beginning of the 21st centaury, with new designers and models and some sensible designing; the fashion hype accelerated its speed.
Indian fashion industry spreads its wings globally
For the global fashion industry, India is a very big exporter of fabrics and accessories. All over the world, Indian ethnic designs and materials are considered as a significant facet for the fashion houses and garment manufacturers. In fabrics, while sourcing for fashion wear, India also plays a vital role as one of the biggest players in the international fashion arena.
India's strengths not only depend on its tradition, but also on its raw materials. World over, India is the third largest producer of cotton, the second largest producer of silk and the fifth largest producer of man-made fibres.
In the international market, the Indian garment and fabric industries have many fundamental aspects that are compliant, in terms of cost effectiveness to produce, raw material, quick adjustment for selling, and a wide ranges of preference in the designs in the garments like with sequin, beadwork, aari or chikkon embroidery etc, as well as cheaper skilled work force. India provides these fashion garments to the international fashion houses at competitive prices with shorter lead time and an effective monopoly in designs which covers elaborated hand embroidery - accepted world over.
India has always been considered as a default source in the embroidered garment segment, but the changes of rupee against dollar has further decreased the prices, thereby attracting buyers. So the international fashion houses walk away with customized stuff, and in the end crafted works are sold at very cheap rates.
As far as the market of fabrics is concerned, the ranges available in India can attract as well as confuse the buyer. A basic judgmental expectation in the choosing of fabrics is the present trend in the international market. Much of the production tasks take place in parts of the small town of Chapa in the Eastern state of Bihar, a name one would have never even heard of. Here fabric making is a family industry, the ranges and quality of raw silks churned out here belie the crude production methods and equipment used- tussars, matka silks, phaswas, you name it and they can design it. Surat in Gujarat, is the supplier of an amazing set of jacquards, moss crepes and georgette sheers - all fabrics utilized to make dazzling silhouettes demanded world over. Another Indian fabric design that has been specially designed for the fashion history is the "Madras check" originally utilized for the universal "Lungi" a simple lower body wrap worn in Southern India, this product has now traversed its way on to bandannas, blouses, home furnishings and almost any thing one can think of.
Recently many designers have started using traditional Indian fabrics, designs and cuts to enhance their fashion collections. Ethnic Indian designs with batik cravat, tie-and-dye or vegetable block print is 'in' not just in India but all across the world.
In India, folk embroidery is always associated with women. It is a way of their self expression, and they make designs that depict their native culture, their religion and their desires. Women embroider clothes for their personal use, and the people linked with the pastoral profession prepare embroidered animal decorations, decorative covers for horns and foreheads and the Rabaris of Kutch in Gujarat do some of the finest embroidery. Embroidered pieces are made during the festivals and marriages, which are appliqué work called 'Dharaniya'. One of the significant styles of Saurashtra is 'Heer' embroidery, which has bold geometric designs, woven on silks. The Mutwa women of the Banni area of Kutch have a fascinating embroidery where they make fine embroidery works with designed motifs and mirrors in the size of pinheads, the Gracia jats use geometric designs on the yoke of long dresses. Moreover, the finest of quilts with appliqué work are also made in Kutch.
Garments embellishment with bead work is another area where it in demand in the international market. Beads are used to prepare garlands and other accessory items like belts and bags and these patterns now available for haute couture evening wear too.
According to a survey, in recent times Indian women have given up their traditional sari for western wears like t-shirts and shorts, as they feel more comfortable in skirts and trousers instead of saris and salwar kameez. It's been noted that women spend just $165 million on trousers and skirts against 1.74 billion dollars spent by men on trousers. With more women coming out to work, the (combined) branded trouser and skirts market has been increasing at a whopping 27 per cent in sales terms. Women feel that Western clothing is more suitable, particularly when working or using public transportation. Many corporate offices are also in favor of their employees wearing Western wear.
In India, Western inspiration is increasing due to the influence of TV and films. Besides, shopping malls selling branded clothes have also mushroomed in India and are fascinating the youngsters. Recently, designer wear is being promoted through store chains such as Shopper's Stop, Pantaloons, Westside, etc. Companies such as Raymond and TCNS have also set up their exclusive stores for designer wear such as Be: and W.
The market of India fashion industry
Recently, a report stated that the Indian fashion industry can increase from its net worth of Rs 200 crore to Rs 1,000 crore in the next five to ten years. Currently, the worldwide designer wear market is amounted at $35 billion, with a 9 per cent growth rate, with the Indian fashion industry creating hardly 0.1 per cent of the international industry's net worth.
According to approximations, the total apparel market in India is calculated to be about Rs 20,000 crore. The branded apparel market's size is nearly one fourth of this or Rs 5,000 crore. Designer wear, in turn, covers nearly about 0.2 per cent of the branded apparel market.
At present, the largest sales turnover within the designer wear segment is about Rs25 crore, with other well-known names having less turnovers of Rs10-15 crore. In view of the prospects of the Indian fashion industry for growth, the figures are not very hopeful.
The figure of fashion industry
o The organized market for designer apparel is about Rs 250 crore
o Designer wear calculates to less than 1 per cent of the apparel market
o The global market for designer wear is 5 per cent of total apparel market
o The global market for designer wear industry is largely dependent on the small-scale sector
o Consumers for designer wear have a yearly household income of Rs 10 lakh-plus. There are 3 lakh such households developing at 40-45 per cent
o Designer wear industry is projected to increase to Rs 1,000 crore by 2015.
o More than 81 per cent of the population below 45 years of the age is fashion conscious.
Many fashion designers and management experts foresee an average growth of about 10-12 per cent for the Indian fashion industry in the coming years. Though, the growth rate could be more than 15 per cent, if infrastructural and other logistical bottlenecks and drawbacks are over come.
India needs more effort to overcome
However, despite the benefits available in India there are also some disadvantages. India is not a remarkable player in the global market with reference to brands because of its inability to add value to products. This is observed by the fact that nearly 50 per cent of its exports are apparel and made-ups where value addition is essential. Likewise, 75 per cent of domestic apparel market is commoditized and unbranded and very few Indian brands do survive in the foreign markets. Evidently, the Indian market has not made a strong stand and hence it is difficult to make Indian brands that can compete with global brands in India.
Another reason for the fashion industry's inadequate growth is the limited experience of the designers and the platform they are offered. The insignificance stalks from the reality that most of the young talent is hired by the bigger names to work in their studios, thus imprinting their work with the label of the big designers.
Though performing individual presentation is not an alternative choice for most of the young talent, because of the limitation of finance, a beginner designer's name fails to come to the forefront.
Another thing, with regards to the ramp, is what the designers offer is barely appropriate to be worn ordinarily. You'll see there's dissimilarity between what is there on the ramp and what the Page Three crowd wears. Some believe at present the fashion is in, but the tendency hasn't changed much as it is the old ones coming back. We have had short kurtas, long kurtas, flowing skirts, etc. coming back into fashion with only a new variety of designs.
Many management consultants and professionals believe that the Indian fashion industry will be boosted if the new comers are paid proper attention. What they require is more support so that their work gets due recognition. According to the consultants and professionals there should be a panel of people who choose designers for showcasing according to their work and not their name or who they've worked for earlier, and hence selection would be purely based on quality. Besides this, the panel of judges should comprise of people from the fashion schools rather than designers.
It has been observed that the media-hype around the big designers and blatant commercialism has hindered business in the Indian fashion industry. No clear cut picture is provided about the feasibility of the products. Basically it is only the famous names that are being talked of. What they offer is not quite daily-wear. The entire focal point of the industry is on commercialism. The discussion is only regarding how much is sold and for what price and nothing about the designs or styles.
Efforts to develop global fashion brands
It needs innovative designers, a seamless supply chain, control over retail and distribution and concentration of quality while dealing with some image. While a few have accomplished something in the west covering Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Zara, Armani, Versace, Ralph Lauren, etc, India has not been capable to track on.
A serious reason for India not being successful has been its isolation in the fashion system. Each stakeholder including designers, exporters, textile players and retail chains need to come together along with the government to make sure that the position of Indian fashion is strong in the coming years.
There are various agencies and industry associations that can support in brand-building practice. Many of these agencies require attractive resources and making a global image of Indian fashion rather than independently trying to promote particular brands or textile segments.
Efforts to create strong global image
Large textiles players require more and more to target on the market facing activities while developing an association with small medium enterprise (SME) clusters. Such kind of networks would be a benefit to that which can focus on demand making and branding as well as for clusters that can focus on quality production.
Efforts to create value networks
After the entry of large retail chains like Wal-Mart, Gap etc in India, Small scale manufacturers in India will find it very difficult to satisfy the demands of these international buyers if they continue to promote their products individually. Therefore, it is very important that value networks are created between large textile and apparel companies in India and small scale manufacturers, so that the marketing muscle of the leading players can be utilized for receiving large orders while the bigger players then assign the orders to the small-medium enterprises according to their past record of quality and service. For this to be put into practice, it will be vital to well-organize the information on small-medium enterprise clusters in a perfect manner so that supplier selection decisions are made according to the information in the long run, only the more efficient small-medium enterprise players survive and develop.
Efforts to concentrate on designers and designs
Designers have a fundamental role to play in the future of Indian fashion scenario. There should hence be an effective process for preparing these designers. This can be done by sponsoring exchange programs with international schools, increasing participations in the fashion capitals of the world, motivating and offering business incubation to new designers and rewarding efforts through proper design awards.
Even in India, well-known designers are incapable to tap finances from well-organized resources, since a vital part of their assets are brands and design talent which are not measured in terms of money and hence it becomes difficult to judge the value. This has severely inhibited their development and capability to raise retail existence across the country and abroad. Likewise, there is no systematic approach of existence in the fashion capitals of the world like Paris, Milan and New York. Due to this, designers have to depend on their personal contacts and relationships for organizing fashion shows and making retail alliances. The French government as well as the British government helps designers of their particular countries appreciably in these areas as they understand that value creation through design is the only way to carry on in the competitive landscape of the global fashion industry. The Indian government and related agencies should also accept this aspect of textile, apparel and fashion industry sincerely if they need to see India on the global fashion map.
Work in collaboration: designers-corporate efforts
Designers and many organizations can work globally through various models and with many working relationships. The Indian fashion industry has many views but only one such model, wherein a designer creates a retail venture with his/her own brand through organized retail chains. There are many other models according to brand ownership and division of operational activities.
Globally, many models of collaboration between designers and corporates are available. For example Ralph Lauren has made an agreement with Jones Apparel for producing and retailing various Polo brands. Likewise, Armani had an agreement with Zegna for production, even while it was competing with them in the marketplace. There are many cases of designer brands being co-owned by the designers and corporates, Gucci-Alexander McQueen and Gucci-Stella McCartney being some of them.
In the end, many designer businesses have been obtained by corporates where designers play a major role in the design elements of the business, but the brand and the organization is owned completely by the corporate.
The current possession of Calvin Klein by Philips Van Heusen and earlier holdings of Hugo Boss and Valentino by Marzotto are some related examples in this segment. These examples strongly point out that not only designers find such relationships important for development, but also corporates find these attractive for rising their profitability and growth. Likewise deals in India could go a long way in developing the brand values of corporates and designers.
Developing clusters
Making common infrastructure for functioning such as design and sampling, affluent treatment, product testing, etc can help in increasing the capability of the clusters since noteworthy investments could be made by the cluster itself rather than any single player.
Well-managed databases can help in decreasing search costs and through data mining, rating of players can be done so as to make the procurement process easier for buyers. Cooperative marketing programs at different clusters can also support players to grow up in the value chain by mixing their strengths within the cluster.
Cluster based battle in the fashion industry is characterized by the Italian industry. The National Chamber for Italian Fashion for example, supports the development of the fashion clusters at Milan and Florence in a well organized manner. Indian industry can learn a lot from Italy because India has a similar cluster based scattered production base, but has been incapable to link it with design and branding capability.
If the above activities are successfully considered, India could have an extraordinary development in the fashion industry, which could increase from a negligible size to Rs 8,000 crore in the coming decade.
Conclusion
In the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Indian fashion scenario was colorful and stylish, in the end of 20th century it was quite subdued and with the beginning of the 21st century it has geared up and is still experiencing the growth with many spectrums of colours. Though this industry is growing at a very good pace, besides achieving a negligible share in the global market, still it needs to make severe efforts to stand amongst international fashion market in various aspects.

The stuff of plastic wrap and grocery bags, polyethylene is thin and lightweight, and could keep you cooler than most textiles because it lets heat through rather than trapping it in. But polyethylene would also lock in water and sweat, as it’s unable to draw away and evaporate moisture. This antiwicking property has been a major deterrent to polyethylene’s adoption as a wearable textile.
Now, MIT engineers have spun polyethylene into fibers and yarns designed to wick away moisture. They wove the yarns into silky, lightweight fabrics that absorb and evaporate water more quickly than common textiles such as cotton, nylon, and polyester.
They have also calculated the ecological footprint that polyethylene would have if it were produced and used as a textile. Counter to most assumptions, they estimate that polyethylene fabrics may have a smaller environmental impact over their life cycle than cotton and nylon textiles.
The researchers hope that fabrics made from polyethylene could provide an incentive to recycle plastic bags and other polyethylene products into wearable textiles, adding to the material’s sustainability.
“Once someone throws a plastic bag in the ocean, that’s a problem. But those bags could easily be recycled, and if you can make polyethylene into a sneaker or a hoodie, it would make economic sense to pick up these bags and recycle them,” says Svetlana Boriskina, a research scientist in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Boriskina and her colleagues have published their findings today in Nature Sustainability.
Water wick
A molecule of polyethylene has a backbone of carbon atoms, each with a hydrogen atom attached. The simple structure, repeated many times over, forms a Teflon-like architecture that resists sticking to water and other molecules.
“Everyone we talked to said polyethylene might keep you cool, but it wouldn’t absorb water and sweat because it rejects water, and because of this, it wouldn’t work as a textile,” Boriskina says.
Nevertheless, she and her colleagues tried to make weavable fibers from polyethylene. They started with polyethylene in its raw powder form and used standard textile manufacturing equipment to melt and extrude polyethylene into thin fibers, similar to turning out strands of spaghetti. Surprisingly, they found that this extrusion process slightly oxidized the material, changing the fiber’s surface energy so that polyethylene became weakly hydrophilic, and able to attract water molecules to its surface.
The team used a second standard extruder to bunch multiple polyethylene fibers together to make a weavable yarn. They found that, within a strand of yarn, the spaces between fibers formed capillaries through which water molecules could be passively absorbed once attracted to a fiber’s surface.
To optimize this new wicking ability, the researchers modeled the properties of the fibers and found that fibers of a certain diameter, aligned in specific directions throughout yarn, improved the fibers’ wicking ability.
Based on their modeling, the researchers made polyethylene yarn with more optimized fiber arrangements and dimensions, then used an industrial loom to weave the yarn into fabrics. They then tested the wicking ability of polyethylene fabric over cotton, nylon, and polyester by dipping strips of the fabrics in water and measuring the time it took for the liquid to wick, or climb up each strip. They also placed each fabric on a scale over a single water droplet and measured its weight over time as the water was wicked through the fabric and evaporated.
In every test, polyethylene fabrics wicked away and evaporated the water faster than other common textiles. The researchers did observe that polyethylene lost some of its water-attracting ability with repeated wetting, but by simply applying some friction, or exposing it to ultraviolet light, they induced the material to become hydrophilic again.
“You can refresh the material by rubbing it against itself, and that way it maintains its wicking ability,” Boriskina says. “It can continuously and passively pump away moisture.”
Eco cycle
The team also found a way to incorporate color into the polyethylene fabrics, which has been a challenge, again due to the material’s resistance to binding with other molecules, including traditional inks and dyes. The researchers added colored particles into the powdered polyethylene before extruding the material into fiber form. In this way, particles were encapsulated within the fibers, successfully imparting color to them.
“We don’t need to go through the traditional process of dyeing textiles by dunking them in solutions of harsh chemicals,” Boriskina says. “We can color polyethylene fibers in a completely dry fashion, and at the end of their life cycle, we could melt down, centrifuge, and recover the particles to use again.”
The team’s dry-coloring process contributes to the relatively small ecological footprint that polyethylene would have if it were used to make textiles, the researchers say. The team calculated this footprint by using a life cycle assessment tool commonly used by the textile industry. Taking into account polyethylene’s physical properties and the processes required to make and color the fabrics, the researchers found it would require less energy to produce polyethylene textiles, compared to polyester and cotton.
“Polyethylene has a lower melting temperature so you don’t have to heat it up as much as other synthetic polymer materials to make yarn, for example,” Boriskina explains. “Synthesis of raw polyethylene also releases less greenhouse gas and waste heat than synthesis of more conventional textile materials such as polyester or nylon. Cotton also takes a lot of land, fertilizer, and water to grow, and is treated with harsh chemicals, which all comes with a huge ecological footprint.”
In its use phase, polyethylene fabric could also have a smaller environmental impact, she says, as it would require less energy to wash and dry the material compared with cotton and other textiles.
“It doesn’t get dirty because nothing sticks to it,” Boriskina says. “You could wash polyethyelene on the cold cycle for 10 minutes, versus washing cotton on the hot cycle for an hour.”
“Though a surprising finding, I think the design of experiments and the data are quite convincing,” says Shirley Meng, a materials scientist at the University of California at San Diego, who was not involved in the research. “Based on the data presented in the paper, the particular PE fabric reported here depicts superior properties than those of cotton. The main point is that recycled PE can be used to make textile, a product with significant value. This is the missing piece of PE recycling and circular economy.”
The team is exploring ways to incorporate polyethylene fabrics into lightweight, passively cooling athletic apparel, military attire, and even next-generation spacesuits, as polyethylene shields against the harmful X-ray radiation of space.
The international team included researchers from MIT, Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy, U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, INRIM Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica in Italy, Defense Agency for Technology and Quality in South Korea, and Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico.
This research was supported, in part, by the U.S. Army Research Office, the
Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA) Institute, MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI), the MIT Deshpande Center, and the MIT-Tecnológico de Monterrey Nanotechnology Program.

Dominion Leather - 2017 Year End Review
Tumblr media
Well, its the end of 2017 and I thought I would sit down do a little “post-mortem” of my year.  What went well…what did not...  I would love to hear your comments as well as to what you thought went well and didn’t.
Contests - I had the Christmas and New Year contest, as well as the After Treason Day contests.  Both went well, but they were way too late.  To meet the timeframe I needed to I had needed to start them both a bit earlier.  Did I get the attention I wanted or expected from them?  Well, I try to be honest with you as best as I can.  The Treason Day one went well, but the Christmas one got less attention then I anticipated.  Maybe it was rushed…maybe the pics were not as good, maybe my thoughts on how they looked were NOT as good as what the public really likes/wants.  Will see in time if I get a bunch of orders for them (only have had one set ordered since I put them up in Oct/Nov).
Harvey - I bring this up not because it “directly affected me in Houston” because it didn’t. When it comes down to it, I was barely affected by it.  I was more stressed out by it and mentally affected by it.  Watching the issues occur in my city (and friends and family) very much put a damper on me doing anything for weeks or even a month, to be honest…  That slowed me down doing all sorts of things I had planned.
Vending at First Event - In March of 2017, I went to my first event as a vendor.  I didn't set high hopes for it, as it was my FIRST event to have ever gone to.  My goal honestly was simply to recover the costs of the hotel and the event fees.  I did that and doubled it, so I classify that as a success.  I noticed many things while I was there.  I neglected to bring much that was black!  Surprisingly I focused on the strong colors I sold the most of, the Oxbloods, Violets, Blues, and Antique Mahogany, but not many blacks.  That was a mistake.  Many people shopping for cuffs and equipment want black simply because it will match other pieces that they already have.  Let alone it is a classic color.  What did also go well for the event was that I was VERY MUCH prepared.  I had everything I needed for the event, so YAY for planning and replanning countless times.  I am scheduled again to visit South Plains Leather Fest again in March of 2018, and I will be bringing the same stuff with a few changes.  I will not have a lot of paddles and the like from Nefarious Kinks this year.  I was VERY surprised they didn't sell as well considering, I thought they had a better “finish” to them”.  I did this to get attention in my booth as well as to do a favor for Nefarious Kinks.  Regardless, I will have more real-estate on my table this year for my wares as there will be no paddles and I will not bring a laptop to the event this year.  It was not needed at all.
Captive Audience - I was a vendor at an event here in Houston in the middle of the summer and by my financial aspect it was a waste of time and money.  But with all things, a lesson is learned.  Events that are put on at playspaces and the like are going to be very small.  Why you might ask?  There is no Captive Audience?  People have to make a “conscience” decision to drive to the play space to buy.  They are not a captive audience like people at a hotel for a few days.  So the chance of me doing these events at small locations for a few hours I will have to weight carefully.  The issue is, I have very little free time it seems these days.  Do I see a benefit or am I rolling the dice?  just something I have to think about for each event is all.
Stitching - I was meaning to get into stitching this year and I simply didn't.  This is essentially the next big “roadblock” to evolving my trade a bit more, and I didn't push into it this year.  I MUST get into it next year (2018).
Padding/liners - This goes along with Stitching.  I was going to try to start testing and experimenting with putting some type of padding or liner on items.  I didn't do it, simply because of time and I didn't push into stitching as I anticipated.
Laser Cut - This was something I was quite excited about in 2016.  This died on the vine.  The guy I was getting to help me bail out on some designs and the laser cutter, vanished on me.  So, I was/are back to square one.  I was VERY CLOSE to starting to have some items for release when this all stopped...so...lets hit that “reset button” and begin again.
Innovation - Overall topic...How do I think I did some Innovation?  Well.....Good and bad.  I think I made some strides in the harness department as well as the scaled leather dual color aspect...but to me..I made little innovation elsewhere.  I think I need more!
Scaled Cuffs/Collars with Dual Colors - What can I say of these?  I love em.  Now I started it as a test, doing a “light” color as the base (the one that is supposed to show up in the cracks) and then with black on the surface.  This worked great once I figured out the right amount of dye to put into the sponge for wiping on the leather (so it does not soak into the cracks and just cover them up).  The finish was a fun aspect here, I used two different ones, a wax based one and then a drying resolene based finish.  They both act a bit differently which is interesting.  The resolene causes the top color to bleed MUCH more into the cracks then the wax based one.  Then. I tried a bunch more colors, the blues, violets, and reds.  This became very interesting as the top coat no longer “covered” the base coat, it actually “augmented” it a bit.  You then had numerous colors which were fascinating...some of which I might not ever be able to repeat..but it will be fun to try!
First full Calendar Year - It's my first FULL calendar year for having Dominion Leather in business.  As I said I love doing this and it's not meant to be a full-time job, but a fun fulfillment for me to experiment with a new hobby and for me to show people off here on Tumblr and other Social Media some fun things!  Well, Dominion Leather did ok.  We had a few more orders and made a few more dollars, but that doesn't mean much when DL didn't exist in January and February of last year.  I blame a little of this to the storm, but it all honestly falls on me!  I have to figure this out! Regardless of that, I loved it!  I loved experiencing it with you all.  We had our first big event, we had our first Meetup (granted it was 1 person), we got our new website...etc.  I imagine next year will be more fun!
How I get the colors so vibrant - Well.  I can only assume you are wanting to know how I get the colors to generally be so even.  They are vibrant partially because that is how the manufacturer made them.  What I do is how I apply the dye.  For the leather I use sponges.  I cut standard “cellulose” dish sponges into little squares, use an eyedropper to apply dye to them, and slowly rub those sponges to the leather.  I try to do it as evenly as possible.  I make sure not to go to dark, as we can add darker colors later...in layers.  The goal is to keep it even (not splotchy).
Health - A few months ago I went to the doctor and came back with some results that were troubling requiring me to make life changes.  Well...  For this, I am quite successful so far!  I have been 2 months without tobacco, cutting out soda for the most part, and eating a bit better as well as taking some appropriate medication.  We will see what the doctors say soon.
Website - I took some time and put together a website.  I hope you all have seen it.  It's fairly basic, just showing so finished items.  If you have comments on it, love to hear about it! - https://dominionleathershop.com
