Zelma O'Riely

There was a posting this week about Zelma O'Riley, I always thought it was O'Reily, but I will use the spelling used online.  She was called by those who did not know her, "Bicycle Annie."  Her relative, Diane, is gathering information to tell her real story, which I am delighted about learning.  Zelma was one of the most mistreated and misunderstood of our citizens. This photo was taken by my friend, Dan Dydek, in 1981 and gifted to me that same year.  That I know, it is the only copy.  I have cherished it all these 40 years, reluctant to share it,  but want Diane to be able to use it and  to make sure Dan Dydek got the photo credit.  He was sitting in Les Amis and used a zoom lens, so she never knew he took the photo.  I think it is iconic. I have not wanted to share it because there are so many who witnessed or were assaulted by her wicked and angry verbal attacks as she aged.   I am not sure which came first, how we treated someone who lived a life different from others or was this behavior always there, even in her youth. In the beginning, she wanted to represent and write about the mistreatment of the Indian tribe of which she was a decedent and rode her bike all over Austin selling subscriptions.  But as the years passed, her uniqueness was never well received and the brutality she suffered for her individuality was hard to endure. We celebrated Leslie for behavior far worst than her behavior and even bought T shirts with his profile "Leslie for Mayor".  It was a different time. ...... Rest in Peace, Zelma.

In addition to my response to that asari comic that’s making the rounds by @chongotheartist -

You likely won’t ever see asari like the one on the far right that is distinctly, heroically masculine, due to asari lacking males and corresponding sexual dimorphism and hormone-swapped secondary sexual characteristics, especially those common to humanoid ME species.  Due to biochemistry, the majority of asari would probably resemble the far left asari, with a minority resembling the middle asari, where hormones simply didn’t fill her out as much.  After all, the asari and their ancestors had to find their own kind attractive first, and that means selecting for desirable physical traits (again, in the case of the asari, feminine ones).

In my opinion, the most extreme departure you’d see from far left figure would be an outstanding version of the middle asari.  Maybe she’d look something like Gwendoline Christie, or a WNBA basketball player, like the late Margo Dydek.  This is not accounting for musculature added by physical fitness.

Also, implicit in the comic is the attachment of said asari pronouns being attached to, and/or the result of, depicted body type variation.  That’s also unlikely, given that Liara says that asari have one gender (not none), and that asari are stated to be unisexual.

- Dzień dobry, ja się nazywam tak i siak, będę tu u was pracować, macie klucze do mojego nowego habitatu.

Oczywiście nic nie jest tak łatwe jak się może wydawać ;) I mówiąc szczerze, gdyby ten etap poszedł bezproblemowo byłabym wielce zdziwiona. Nie no, nie mieli kluczy na moje nazwisko. Ale pan starszy ochroniarz, dwukrotnie na angielski tłumaczony, znalazł styraną kopertę opisaną nazwiskiem cżłowieka z HR, które rozpoznałam. Wobec braku innych kluczy, kopert oraz ludzi mówiących po angielsku uznałam, ze jest spoko i odrurlałam się resztką sił do bloku nieopodal. Bloku posiadającego zdaje się sześć klatek i numerach mieszkań nie mających kompletnie sensu. Jedynym szczęściem w cholernie już ciążącym mi na ramionach nieszczęściu było to, że wśród kluczy był “dydek” zbliżeniowy. Po około pół godzinie chodzenia w kółko jak pies z zapaleniem pęcherza znalazłam klatkę numer właściwy. Śmiało dość założyłam, że mieszkanie 807 będzie na ósmym piętrze. Miałam rację. Klucz prawie pasował. Tzn pasował całkowicie po około 10 minutach kombinowania jak jeź do jeżowej, ale udało się.... SUKCES.  ...tylko trochę paskudnie. Normalnie - w sensie nie-covidowo - ktoś z HR odebrałby mnie z lotniska, wręczył klucze, kwiaty i szampana... Ok, klucze. I pokazał co gdzie i jak. Miałabym też normalne wprowadzenie z oprowadzeniem po miejscu pracy. No ale pandemia niestety zmienia nam zwyczaje i nawyki, wieć samoobsługa i trzeba się dużo domyślać. Let Moana play pro basketball

Moana is 7’6. You read that right. At least that’s what comes up when you Google “How tall is Moana.” That means that the star of the 2016 Disney movie can take a different career path now that she has defeated Te Kā: professional basketball.

And with the NBA possibly resuming its season at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, this is the perfect time for her to test her on-court skills. It’s convenient for Moana because she doesn’t have to travel this time around; she lives in Disney World.

If the NBA can resume their season in the three arenas at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the WNBA should adapt a similar plan when they’re ready to start their 2020 season.

From a corporate mindset, think of the synergy behind this. The NBA and WNBA have televisions deal with ESPN, which is owned by Disney. Commercials touting Disney’s next biggest summer blockbuster can be seen ad nauseam between game breaks in the playoffs. The next step would be to include your favorite Disney personalities in the game. Adding Mickey Mouse to a pickup game seems like the obvious fist step, but he’s only two or three feet tall. He’s one hundred percent getting crossed over or getting lost on defense. And we haven’t even talked about how his shoes, which are arguably the twice the size of his head, will interfere with his footwork. Also he’s a mouse.

Moana is a human and more importantly she’s tall. At 7’6 Moana would be the tallest WNBA player in history, towering over even 7’2 center Margo Dydek. To put it into perspective, that’s as tall as Yao Ming, who makes Shaquille O’Neal look like he needs a stepladder to high-five the Houston Rockets legend. The only pro basketball players who would be taller than Moana throughout the history of both the NBA and WNBA would be Manute Bol and Gheorghe Mureșan. And she would only be shorter by only one inch.

She possess the leadership qualities as well. At the end of the movie, Moana becomes chief and her island’s wayfinder, meaning that she has to instruct her people across the seas. Those are the qualities of an efficient point guard. Her ability to instruct others combined with her height makes her less of a dominant post player and more of a basketball unicorn, a vertically-gifted player who plays more like a guard.

When the film was released in 2016, Moana was 16 years old. That would put her at 20 years old now, making it the perfect time for WNBA scouts to start doing their research. She may not make the immediate impact that someone like Sabrina Ionescu will, but she could be a third-round selection with raw talent. Have her learn from the WNBA vets from the bench for a season or two and maybe Moana can be ready in a few years.

If Moana could defeat Te Kā as a giant lava demon, then Moana surely has a small opportunity to compete on the basketball court. Height isn’t everything, but Moana possesses all the intangibles that could lead to a fruitful pro basketball career. Who knows how far she’ll go.

You may be asking, if Moana is a seven footer, then how tall is Maui and wouldn’t he also play pro basketball? Well, yes but Maui admitted that he is a demigod which would surely disqualify him from competition. Having demigods play professionally would ultimately result in the league and the players’ union restructuring their collective bargaining agreement, so that may take a while.

For full disclosure, Moana might not actually be 7’6. Chalk this up to Google’s algorithm fetching information from a popular blog and placing it directly up top its search results. It’s just like when this site accidentally renamed the NC Dinos mascot Swole Daddy. Still, it’s fun to speculate how a 7’6 Moana could fare on the basketball court.
