Emma-Jean Thackray announces a new release “Um Yang” and shares two remixes
Tumblr media
Emma-Jean Thackray announces a new release “Um Yang” and shares some new remixes. The new long-dreamed project is straight-to-disc record dedicated to the Taoist philosophy of duality and harmony, of balancing melody and rhythm, groove and free improvisation, the cerebral and physical. The album was recorded and cut direct-to-disk at Artone Studio in Haarlem, Holland, the same way as the previous Night Dreamer releases. The two-track project features Thackray on trumpet, vocals and percussion, alongside Soweto Kinch on sax, Lyle Barton (Golden Mean) on rhodes, Ben Kelly (Paradox Ensemble) on sousaphone, Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic, Steam Down, Bryony Jarman Pinto) on percussion, Crispin Robinson (Galliano) on congas, and Dougal Taylor (Vels Trio) on drums. “Recording in (Artone) was such a dream. It had all the fantasy analogue equipment you daydream about one day being able to use. The desk looked like something Uhura would use. All the instruments were natural, woods and metals, no plastic in sight, and everything was to be hit or blown, all analogue. I really needed everything to be natural and real, because the music is about the universe, about the energy of all things, and what is more real than that”, Thackray recalls. Watch below a video to Emma-Jean Thackray new song “Um”, from her forthcoming album “Um Yang”: She also releases two new remixes. Read the full article

ONIPA - Off The Grid
Off the Grid is a journey that joins the origin story of dance rhythms from Africa to electronic dance music of today's clubs and festivals, connecting African folklore and storytelling to rap, jazz and hip hop. From Accra Market cassette tapes to London pirate radio stations, Malian blues to UK jazz - the twin creative forces behind Onipa — Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and Kweku Sackey (K.O.G. & the Zongo Brigade) - together with Finn Booth on drums and Dwayne Kilvington (a.k.a. Wonky Logic) on synths, have built a life-affirming and highly original world of sound. Off The Grid is the band’s second full-length album, and first release on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, featuring an impressive cast of collaborators including Moonchild Sanelly, David Walters, Dele Sosimi and Theon Cross. LCSM "Likwid Continual Space Motion" - The Remedy - I G culture makes the most incredible beats, and the ones he makes as LCSM are the best of all
"The Remedy," is I G Culture's latest album under Likwid Continutal Space Motion, Culture draws parallels between the complex world of fungi and London's Underground dance music scene. Both are intricate networks that thrive beneath the surface, connecting diverse elements and influencing one another. The London dance music scene, like fungi, encompasses a variety of styles and genres, from drum and bass to Garage Dance Subcultures may go unnoticed to the casual observer but are musical corner stones in our society. Dance floors and clubs serve as spaces for communal healing, allowing people to let go of daily stresses and connect through music and dance. I G Culture's "The Remedy" celebrates this vibrant underground culture and highlights the interconnectedness of all musical styles. Through his innovative production and thematic depth, he underscores the transformative power of dance music, emphasizing its role in promoting well-being and unity. The idea of Fungi also is expressed in the artwork by Amsterdams 'Machine' with IG's direction, who used fungi in an original collage revealing a secret world. Wurlitzer and keys: Dwayne 'Wonky Logic' Kilvington Bass: Luke Wynter (all tracks), Chris Jones (The Journey) Drums: Benjamin Appiah Trombone: Nathaniel Cross Tenor saxophone: Deji Ijishakan Vocals: Allysha Joy, Rara Zulu, Oliver Night Bars: Tyrone Isaac Stuart Keys: IG Culture Flute: Saul Bourne Trumpet: Jnr Biles Strings: Ghettolette String Ensemble Hammond B3 and rhodes: Don Myth Produced and arranged by: IG Culture

ONIPA - Tapes of Utopia - London-based Afrobeat+ (Boomerang Records)
Tapes Of Utopia brilliantly showcases Onipa's crossover appeal, full of danceable grooves alongside politically astute lyricism. The legend Tony Allen features on 'Chicken No Dey Fly', 'Porridge' rallies against those who "Lie to the poor people", 'Tami' is a psychedelic exploration, while 'Mokole' features the MOBO award nominated Ghanaian rapper M3NSA - each track from the mixtape bristles with future-facing experimentation whilst giving nods to the heroes of the past. The mixtape has received support from NPR, CLASH, Le Monde, Cerys Mathews (BBC 6 Music), Jess Iszatt (BBC Radio London), Jazz FM, Tom Robinson (The BBC Introducing Mixtape, BBC 6 Music), Matt Wilkinson (Apple Music 1), Songlines, Resonance FM, The Line of Best Fit, The Independent Arts, Pan African Music, Radio Nova, RFI & FIP. Onipa was born out of a deep collaboration between long-time friends K.O.G. Onipa - We No Be Machine - Afrofuturist grooves from Ghana (Strut)
Afro futurist sensations Onipa unleash their debut album, combining afro grooves, electronics and fierce energy for an effervescent celebration of cultural and musical encounters. ONIPA means ‘human’ in Akan, the ancient language of the Ashanti people of Ghana. It’s a message of connection through collaboration: from Ghana to London, our ancestors to our children, Onipa brings energy, groove, electronics, afrofuturism, dance and fire!
Born out of deep collaboration between long-time friends KOG (Kweku of Ghana of KOG and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (MD, guitarist and writer of acclaimed jazz/ soul afrobeat pioneers Nubiyan Twist), the 4 piece live show features KOG on vocals, balafon and percussion, Tom Excell on guitar, percussion and electronics, Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic) on synths and MPC and Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) on drums. "As we chase the morphic resonance of African art, sound and movement into new worlds, we find stories of the past answering riddles of the future. Tales of existence and resistance, of our innate ability to positively connect, express, share and create. Tales of extending our natural abilities beyond our own survival, to the survival of the planet, reminding us that our ancient connection with the earth must not be traded for technology and materials. Through the musical prisms of London and Ghana our influences join together to create a new sound, 'Savanna Bass’. A fundamental thread of traditional African rhythms, instrumentation and storytelling, interwoven with electronics, urban soundscapes and synth bass. We use technology, but it should never use us, our music is live and about deep human connection."
Lead Vocals: K.O.G Guitars/ Electronics : Tom Excell Drums: Finn Booth Synth Bass: Wonky Logic

LCSM "Likwid Continual Space Motion" - Earthbound - a hefty triple album of broken beats, jazz fusion, & future soul
IG Culture’s LCSM “Likwid Continual Space Motion” releases 18 track LP and theatre soundtrack Earthbound on Super-Sonic Jazz Records. With last year’s ‘EP1’ release on the Super Sonic Jazz label, broken beat icon IG Culture introduced the world to the afro-futuristic and forward-thinking jazz of LCSM “Likwid Continual Space Motion”. Now, the UK pioneer kicks off the new decade by expanding on the project with a full-fledged album entitled Earthbound. The interstellar instrumentals blur borders between funk, soul and space-age jazz, while maintaining the signature ‘London Bruk Boogie’ sound IG Culture is recognised for. The album also serves as a score for the accompanying science fiction theatre production that goes by the same name. Earthbound delicately propels listeners out of orbit and into the vastness of space. The conveying message behind the album is based on the work of author Zecharia Sitchin, who translated ancient Sumerian tablets that explain the origins of humans. The story revolves around the ancient people of Nibiru who return to earth, only to discover that the humans they had once passed down their knowledge are now living in a world of chaos. LCSM translates this esoteric journey by using intergalactic live jazz fusion. The resulting collage is a melange of live sax, alternating percussions sessions, Sun-Ra like piano lines, and otherworldly synth sessions. Produced in cooperation with Saido Lehlouh, Johanna Faye and Summer Dance Forever Amsterdam, Earthbound sees IG Culture team up members from the London artist collective Steam Down, Alex Phountzi of Selectors Assemble (Bugz In The Attic), and Rhythm Section’s Neue Grafik. Collectively, the hive mind creates a holistic listening experience, to be enjoyed both on and off the dancefloor. Written, Produced and Conceived by IG Cuture Drums - Edward 'Nache' Hick, Benjamin Appiah Bass - Luke Wynter Guitar - Alex Phountzi Saxophone - Wayne ‘Ahnansé' Francis Trombone - Nathaniel Cross Percussion - Adé Egun ‘Spry’ Crispin Robinson, Vanessa Rani Chutturghoon, IG Culture Keys - Dwayne ‘Wonky Logic Kilvington, Fred Humain ‘Neue Grafik’ Salle, IG Culture, Wayne ‘Ahnansé' Francis Vocals - Natalie May, Wayne ‘Ahnansé’ Francis, Oliver Night, Demelza Toy Toy

Emma-Jean Thackray - UM YANG 음 양 - percussion-heavy septet with a tuba for a bass grooves through two tracks inspired by Taoism, recorded direct to disc (Night Dreamer)
Emma-Jean Thackray, an outstanding figure in the UK jazz scene, releases Um Yang, her long-dreamed project dedicated to the Taoist philosophy of duality and harmony. A highly ambitious and personal record that sees Thackray leading a septet featuring Soweto Kinch and Steam Down’s Wonky Logic, recorded straight to vinyl. An accomplished trumpeter, beat-maker, singer, composer and DJ, Thackray draws on far wider influences than jazz. Her sound is distinctive; in the words of The Guardian like “Bitches Brew-era Miles entering the dub chamber with a New Orleans marching band – in a good way”. Raised in Yorkshire, Thackray inherited a grounding in Taoism from her father, and approaches her music with the same pursuit of harmony between Um & Yang (the Korean Ying & Yang), balancing melody and rhythm, groove and free improvisation, cerebral and physical. For this one-off recording, Thackray has applied this ideology in every sense, even down to the ensemble itself featuring not one but two percussionists. Um commences with ethereal interplay between keys, percussion, and Thackray’s trumpet, recalling the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane’s classic records. As the piece builds, an earthy groove emerges. On both trumpet and vocals, Thackray leads the ensemble further out until the piece peaks with an epic breakdown. On the flip, Yang starts on the same cacophonous note but progresses to a joyful groove before returning to a peaceful state again, balance restored. When Night Dreamer Records invited Emma to record Um Yang straight-to-disc at Artone’s vintage recording studio in Haarlem, The Netherlands, Emma was excited by the idea of capturing this specific project in one-take, without overdubs or edits. “Recording in (Artone) was such a dream” Thackray recalls. “It had all the fantasy analogue equipment you daydream about one day being able to use. The desk looked like something Uhura would use. All the instruments were natural, woods and metals, no plastic in sight, and everything was to be hit or blown, all analogue. I really needed everything to be natural and real, because the music is about the universe, about the energy of all things, and what is more real than that.” Honest sound to match truly honest music. With Um Yang, Emma-Jean Thackray has created her most personal and defining work to date.
