The pomegranate is famously known as the fruit of heaven belongs to the berry family. Pomegranate fruit is a delicious fruit and has juicy grains inside. Grow pomegranates as large, shrub or small trees.

Types 

There are 1200 different varieties of pomegranate which have unique tastes and various colours. There are purple hearts, Eversweet, wonderful, kazake, red silk, texas pink.

Purple heart

Purple heart varieties are large with dark red. Fruits begin to produce at about 3 years old. Pick fruit off a tree when it is mature. These pomegranate plants grow 12-30 feet tall and wide. Provide lots of health benefits. They are the best immune boosters and good healers.

Eversweet

The color of the pomegranate is pinkish-pale red. Eversweet seeds are a little hard in texture and are highly nutritious containing vitamins A, C and E. Pomegranate trees are glossy, narrow leathery leaves which are lance-shaped. These varieties are self-pollinated. This is a national fruit of Iran.

Kazake

Kazake varieties produce medium to large size fruit. This is the most dwarfing species. This pomegranate plant is fast-growing with drought tolerant. This is a seeded fruit and it has a thick reddish outer covering. These flowers often fall off the branches rather than converting into fruit.

Red silk

Red silk is the best pot-growing variety, which is a semi-dwarf growth habit. It has dark red flesh and red arils. Grows trees in hot and dry climatic conditions. Its contain fibre which keeps our digestive system healthy.

Texas pink

Texas pink pomegranate plant produces attractive blooming which converts pink fruits. This variety is a famous ornamental fruit plant. Texas pink is a self-fertile plant. It has large edible seeds.

Wonderful

Wonderful pomegranate plant is the most common variety grown in the low desert of Arizona. Mix a teaspoon of natural honey in half a liter of water and spray directly on the flower with the help of a spray bottle. This will attract honey bees for pollination. This tip helps to increase the yield. This fruit is too sweet and highly beneficial.

Seed

In this Punica granatum fruit plant seeds are also edible. It contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. In average one fruits can hold 1000 seeds. Seeds are covered with glowing red skin.

Soil

For better growth and development prefers to grow in well-drained loamy soil. Soil mix with 80% bone meal and 20% neem cake.

Water

For mature pomegranate tree, adequate irrigation especially during the dry periods is very important to improve growth, fruit set, yield and fruit size. 

Sunlight

Select the location to keep the pomegranate plant with plenty of sunlight. In cooler climates, plant pome tree with western exposure. Requires 6 hours’ of direct sunlight.

Fertilizer

Good organic mulch and cow manure can improve plant growth and soil fertility. Application of vermicompost at monthly intervals.

Repotting 

Repot the plant into a new pot when the root bound occurs. Normally repot the plant for two to three years. 

Pruning

The best time for pome tree pruning is late winter, after harvesting the fruits. Branch pruning can increase fruit production. Pruning the roots will help to reduce root bound. Pruned the tree before repotting.

Daily consumption of pome gives us strength and energy

Its contain fibre which keeps our digestive system healthy.

Nature has awoken and the trees and bushes around the house have gone berserk with fruit and flowers! Would be a shame if it all went to waste, wouldn't it? Annika to the rescue!

She first plucked the blackberry bush (making sure only to pick the ripe ones), and then moved on to the dwarf fruit trees. She picked the pears and the pomegranates, which looked particularly tasty. Maybe she'll save one for later!

Ceres, (also referred to Greek goddess Demeter) is named after a Roman goddess; mostly known for her maternal presence, unconditional love for her daughter, and agricultural skills. She is the mother of Persephone, Goddess of Spring and in her story, Hades (Pluto), King of the dead, lures Persephone into going to the underworld away from her mother to be with him. Ceres is devastated and does everything in her might to locate her daughter and bring her back home leaving her crops behind to wilt.

Eventually, after much time spent in grief, Ceres finally finds Persephone. She declares to Hades that if she can’t have her daughter back she’ll make sure nothing will ever grow on earth again. Persephone is given 6 pomegranate seeds being forced to eat them as pomegranates commonly symbolize the bonding of a relationship (such as marriage) that would permit her from being able to leave the underworld whenever she pleases. Hades negotiates with Ceres proclaiming that if he gets to keep her held in the underworld for 6 months, Persephone can reunite with her again once Spring comes around.

Ceres is not an official planet, but it’s one if not the biggest dwarf planet in the solar system, so I always take note when I see its prominence in someone’s chart. I natally have Ceres conjunct my Sun and NN, and her story rings very true to me. If I was in Ceres’ shoes, I'd do the same. I’ve met many people with a prominent Ceres in their charts and they all sort of show up similarly. Cerian energy is always incredibly nurturing and comforting; one knows what to say to comfort others, they provide solace, are non-judgemental, very mindful, considerate, protective, loving, caring, and welcoming to just about anybody. Ceres also represents familial relationships, service, cycles, nourishment, fertility and reproduction, attachment and separation, agriculture, and bringing in/providing something.

garden update // september... sePTEMBER?!?! 3rd, 2024

i am legit not ready for it to be september. and i don't mean mentally, i mean in the garden.

a long overdue chore was processing the last of the tomato seeds. the green doctor cherries - my absolute top favorite of all time absolutely - are the only ones left producing. all the other indeterminates have given up. one of the reasons it's my favorite. this will be the last batch i process for seeds, i'll enjoy the rest myself.

i really hope i can look back at this photo one day and go "holy crap, i processed the seeds BY HAND?!"

been so busy doing things other than garden things, like prepping for going back to vend at the market this saturday. like this new nifty sign. gotta sew it onto twine, which means dusting off the sewing machine. which is fine, because i got another sewing project i can't wait to show tumblr.

all the seeds will be done and selling at the market this saturday, but the only transplants that have grown a lot despite the hot weather have been the tom thumb dwarf peas. all the dinosaur kale was eaten - i didn't catch all the cabbageworms the first, or second, or third go around. but i already have a 2nd succession already about to grow their true leaves, so that's something?

speaking of something... i have about 3 of the pomegranate cuttings that have made it through me ignoring them for a whole summer. i REALLY need to get them into soil this week. and this chonker of a cantelope plant bursts forth from the compost that i got from a friends garden and after 3 attempts at killing it, it looks like i'll get even more cantaloupe this year. i didn't want it to cross-pollinate with my dwarf variety of cantaloupe, and pretty sure it didn't since it was never flowering at the same time. since the dwarf variety is done and pulled, i'll see if this gives me anything before first frost.

of course, the cherry bomb tomato seeds i saved last year cross pollinated with the spoon tomatoes so i got all different sizes from all those plants. these were the last of them and i've ripped out the plants already. also i remember planting radishes about 2 months ago.... but i don't remember which kind. so into my tummy they go.

last but not least, parsley checking on the forecast for leaf color changing. such a good boi.

It begins with a kiss.

Afterwards it ends with one.

Charlie is a magnificent sight beside Nate, something he will always admit willingly, and now Nate stares at her unashamedly; her makeup free face, her lips, her bare chest and the golden necklace she's always wearing-- he looks at her and is filled to the brim with want and devotion. Love so profound it makes him afraid.

Charlie turns to look at him, leaning her head on her fist and smiling softly at him. She's always so prickly and stubborn interacting with everyone else, but with Nate? She is gentle and endlessly patient. It makes Nate feel like… well, it makes him feel. And that is the most precious thing in the whole world. He only wishes it wasn't so frightening at the same time.

She takes his hand and puts her palm flat against his own. His broad hand is dwarfing her delicate and small one, the tips of her nails barely reaching the second knuckle. Nate smiles warmly at Charlie, who appears to be slightly flushed, her blood pounding in her veins-- so close and so horrifyingly tempting. When Nate saw her blood for the first time, it was so red, like the seeds of a pomegranate or like the forbidden apple that tempted Eve to ruin. 

And he keeps thinking about that colour. All the time.

Nate can feel a fang forming with his tongue and he swallows hard. He shifts under the sheets, just a little bit further away. Charlie notices it and frowns at him, but he links their hands and fingers together, presses them to his mouth and kisses the back of Charlie's hand. It's enough for her. For now.

The (Real) Stardew Valley Farm Update

Okay, so I meant to post way more about this, but the past year involved a truly inhumane number of medical appointments including driving an hour away 2-3 times a week all summer, so . . . not a lot of time for gardening and not much energy for posting. Fingers crossed that this year goes better!

To refresh, I'm trying to grow everything from Stardew Valley in our yard, with substitutions as needed, preferably with Midwest USA native plants. 2021 and 2022 can be found here, with my original plans for what I was going to do for 2023 and 2024.

2021: Additions/Corrections

Starfruit - Native wood sorrel (thanks to @alienskyler1 for teaching me that they were related!)

Cave Carrot - Queen Ann’s Lace, AKA wild carrot (also plenty of cultivated carrots)

2023: What Actually Happened

Garlic - Native wild garlic

Blueberries

Wild Horseradish - Not wild, contained in a raised bed on concrete because I don't want it to get too wild (also a mint containment system!)

Hops - Teamaker hops which is good for tea. It struggled in the summer so maybe tea this year?

Winter Root - I went with hopniss, aka groundnuts, a native vine with tubers you dig up in winter

Fiddlehead Fern - Native hayscented fern

Poppy - Native wood poppy

The ferns and poppies were planted in the fall, so hopefully they come up well this spring!

2024: The Plan

Blue Jazz - Native Ozark Bluestar (one of my winter sowing seeds)

Apricot Tree - Native passionflower vine, known as wild apricot (winter sowing)

Sunflower - Winter sowing two native sunflowers, and will hopefully be growing some massive non-native ones as well
