One-Winged DJ
Season 7 Featured on: The Year of Grand Dad Sound Selection [Side A]

You may have noticed that I try to keep an air of suspense when doing posts on the King for Another Day tournament such as Thank You, Everybody!. That is, of course, to not spoil the victor of Season 4 Episode 1's year-defining event - but at this point, it's a bit of a fruitless endeavor to try and uphold. Because DJ Professor K's victory celebrations haven't just been contained to his awarded day-long takeover during Season 4 Episode 2 - the takeover that gave us incredible rips like AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE A CHUNKY BEAT, 88811, Ska Cha Cha (Rotten Mix) at an absolute breakneck pace during the SiIvaSummer All-Star Festival. Because during that takeover, a new flame was kindled - a flame by the name of Jet Set Radio Evolution.
Hideki Naganuma's style of sample-filled funk music is DJ Professor K's headlining ripping source, the one most closely associated with the game that the character originates from. Yet its a style that can be expressed in so many ways, not needing to be derivative of any prior existing songs from the two Jet Set Radio games - September, for instance, is able to sound authentically Naganuma-esque whilst being built off of a song as far away from his style as possible. Jet Set Radio Evolution, then, is an entirely made-up game - its name and logo deriving from a declined proof-of-concept, but its "soundtrack" completely made up by the SiIvaGunner team. This is far from the first fake game on the channel, and not the first one to be done without much of a shred of irony (Kirby Rip Attack is due for coverage on here) - but, notably, its a fake game born specifically to keep DJ Professor K's impact on the channel alive in the Seasons past his takeover. And, well, it took a few Seasons, but during Season 7, the team started going truly ham in utilizing its true potential.
There are a number of these Jet Set Radio Evolution rips I want to cover on here, both ones from DJ Professor K's takeover and from its revitalized usage during Season 7 - but to me, it was One-Winged DJ that really showed just how much flexibility rippers have with Naganuma's style of music. One-Winged Angel has long been seen as a sort of legendary track to rip due just how extensive of a song it is, a song that has a distinctly menacing feel to it that I can't imagine is easy to translate into a rip. Rips like One Winged PSYcho - V.S. Sepsyrop feel like absolutely herculean endeavors, and during Season 7 in particular we saw an absolute tidal wave of rips using it, as if it were just any other meme source in the channel's backlog and not this legendary 7-minute long work of art. Hen'yoku no Piraman was the first of these I covered, and while One-Winged DJ is likely far from the last, it still manages to feel like it sticks out from the crowd in just how dense of a sound it has - likely a result of how many people contributed to its creation.
There's the obvious highlight, of course: Chase Beck, the voice of DJ Professor K himself, returns to the role with new lines to supplement the original choir in latin of the original song, and it immediately gives the rip a charm to it, especially all these years after the original event and after Chase Beck's last "needed" performance as the character had long since passed. Before that even gets to kick in, though, its hard not to notice just how many different parts of Jet Set Radio's soundtracks are utilized right from the beginning: a bassline and voicelines echoing That's Enough, samples and pacing from Sneakman, the interlude's melody broken by the noise and chaos of The Concept of Love, and all throughout using small little sound effects and one-second samples from all over the games' soundscapes.
This is the kind of rip I could sit here and dissect for pages on end, yet I believe the point has been made abundantly clear already. In a Season already FILLED with celebration of every part of SiIvaGunner's life, One-Winged DJ is an absolute flex of a celebration, reminding us all of why DJ Professor K truly earned his win whilst showing just how much there is to still be done within the ever-appealing Naganuma style. I'm beyond proud of the rippers involved in how this rip turned out, and hope that the Jet Set Radio Evolution rips continue to impress into Season 8.

Oh lord, okay. This rip.
So. I think I started working on this early November of 2021. I had just finished another rip the same day, which was #8 regret (Alpha Mix) - Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. That rip was very chill and somewhat more vibey than most of my other rips- mainly because I just wasn’t feeling the best that day and wanted to make something chill.
I was actually just off the heels of a breakup that occurred a few days before. A lot of the time I like to cope with emotional turmoil in music, and that day was just a burst of emotional expression for me.
I decided to try and make a rip of Subwoofer Lullaby completely randomly. I think I was surfing the wiki for Minecraft songs to rip since they were calm and realized there wasn’t a rip of that song (besides one that got taken down) so I decided to give it a shot. Sometimes when I make rips and want ideas that blend seamlessly, I use Duuzu’s Key & BPM database for songs that are in the same key. I think I just Ctrl+F’d “Subwoofer” and found the song, then started scrolling up. Alphabetically, C418 is close to the letter B, and just above that song was “i love you” by Billie Eilish.
I actually had never listened to the base song in full before. My only exposure to it was, ironically, a Mashup Week track by my good friend Ben (CactusTeam). Billie Eilish was a character in that tournament, and her final mashup before the first tourney’s end heavily utilized that song. I remember listening to it and getting chills from how emotional it was. I believe Ben also input various other Billie songs to make it more representative of her character, but even just the base song alone was enough to make me emotional.
Next thing you know, I’ve got both songs beatmatched, and to my surprise they, somehow, blend together beautifully. I had to do some cutting work since I wanted Subwoofer to reach the chorus at the same rate as i love you, but then there was the ending. The piano after the final bridge cut deep in a way nothing else had within a mashup I’d made before. It harkened back to a time where that music struck feelings of joy and happiness in my heart- something I was lacking when making the rip. Breakups are hard, man! You feel like it’s the end of the world, and I would know since I recently went through another one as of typing this! But I feel like being able to express that pain through music is something I’ll never not do when I get the chance.
I sent it in the siivateam discord shortly after making it and got some feedback from my friend Emm Bee Sea. Then, the next morning, I got a mention from my good friend Duuzu:
To say I wasn’t expecting him of all people to check out my rip is an understatement. I’ve honestly looked up to Duuzu for years since he’s so good at making seamless mashups that sound really fun and boppy to listen to- hell, I used his database to make the rip! So I was really happy to see he enjoyed it.
After listening to it a few more times to do some volume automation and make it better mixed, I had an idea. An idea I had never tried with a rip before because it seemed too adventurous and SiIva is a huge platform to try something like that. But I wanted to do it anyway. I responded to Duuzu:
Visuals. What kind of visuals? I had a vision clear from the moment I heard the ending piano.
A sunrise.
Why a sunrise? Well… I didn’t know. I honestly had no like- full explanation of why that’s what I wanted to do, but I felt it was right. And not just any sunrise, but a sunrise within the game. I wanted to take the extra step in adding some emotional interpretation to the rip. It didn’t have to be clear cut and understandable (as I didn’t even understand it) but I thought it was something I needed to do.
The rip is approved a few days later, and I get to work. I open up Minecraft and OBS and just load up a new world. I think the same seed used in the video is still saved on my PC within the game. I tried to find the sunrise, aligned the pov, and let it go. I waited about ten minutes to get the full shot, and it was really cool to capture. Like… Minecraft is just really beautiful. I didn’t have any shaders or anything, just the base game- and it was beautiful!
I was then able to get the assets for the Minecraft thumbnail from someone on the team (I wanna say it was CSG but I could be wrong) and opened up Premiere, and let the fade go. I didn’t want the sunrise to take over the full screen so I decided to put it behind the text and border. Then I just made the logo fade out, had the sunrise hit on the exact millisecond the final piano bit played, and that was it. I didn’t need to do anything else. That was the rip.
Fast forward to February 14th, 2022, and things are a lot different for me. I started dating someone new (the same one who I recently went through a breakup with) and felt a lot more hopeful about my life. Suddenly, the rip came out. That night I remember scrolling through the comments and seeing a lot of people getting emotional over the mashup and the sunrise. It was exactly what I had hoped for.
I’m gonna post a message I left in siivateam shortly after reading a certain comment that resonated with me since I think it summarizes best what I felt within the moment and what this rip means to me. I also want to thank Mel for reviewing this rip, as I appreciate every time she delves into something I’ve made for the channel- she perfectly describes the emotional weight of some of these rips to me and it means a lot that she can interpret them that way. I suggest checking out Loading - Miiverse if you want another rip in a similar vibe, I made it a few months later and it also holds a special place to me.
Thank you all.
Todays rip: 19/04/2024
i love(d) you
Season 6 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume FF Also on: Now That's What I Call Quality! 3
Ripped by vvsvlogs
youtube
Requested by oetaboy and an anonymous reader! @oetaboy (Ask Box)
I'm sure this rip's been a long time coming for many - I know it has for me. I've had i love(d) you sitting in my drafts as far back as in March, but truthfully it's...daunting, to write about. Requested by two readers. Close to 200 thousand views on YouTube, and recently featured prominently in popular Clone Hero YouTuber Acai's "The Quality of SiIvaGunner" series. And the rip itself being an emotional gutpunch in a season filled with them, from a ripper who's already gutpunched me plenty with Wham! Into Dreams and The Paragoomba and the Wiggler. vvsvlogs, Vivi, I ask this with the most sincere gratitude possible - why must you do this to me?
Minecraft as a game has its emotional hooks in at least two generations of people - that much I think we're all aware of. A sandbox filled with endless possibilities, community, friends, individual stories of survival or of great creative endeavors, all wrapped in C418's hauntingly beautiful score, one I've discussed many times before with Fell From a High Place (Reprise), M-O-O-G City and Every Mob Wants To Rule My World. All of these rips are beautiful, yet they're all aiming to play with Minecraft's sound in some way - the former two rips are arrangement of its music with other games' instrumentation, and the latter rip is a melodyswap playing Everybody Wants To Rule The World. They all play on my senses in their own ways, they're all rightfully impressive - but nothing hits quite the same as Minecraft's own music, on its own terms. i love(d) you isn't aiming to impress or amaze - but it lands a full-on critical hit on one's heart through leveraging everything that's kept Subwoofer Lullaby alive for so many years.
I've talked plenty about my musical illiteracy, and so I hope it doesn't come as a surprise that I've never really listened to world-renowed singer Billie Eilish. She's been on the radio, I've heard Bad Guy, but it was never a name I gave much more thought beyond seeing her discussed online from time to time. You can imagine the absolute awe I was in when I clicked on i love(d) you when it first went up, already expecting an emotional hit due to the Minecraft song used, only to get goosebumps from Eilish's vocals alone. i love you is the penultimate song from Eilish's debut studio album, the very same that Bad Guy was featured on - yet compared to that track's bass-heavy, almost seductive energy, i love you feels remarkably personal, with little more than an acoustic guitar and piano accompanying the openly emotional vocal performance. It's sincere in a way I don't hear enough music be, as if a diary translated into song, much the same emotion that Because I Love You conveyed yet with even greater magnitude due to the vocals in play.
i love(d) you, uploaded for 2022's valentines day, wields both of these forms of love - the connections many of us have to one of the most impactful games ever made, and the unfiltered emotion of i love you - to create something unabashedly beautiful. Mashups aren't a novel concept, mashups are nothing new - yet one glance at the comments tells me that I'm not alone in finding this rip in particular to have struck an incredibly sensitive nerve. Because there's a beauty to Minecraft that I think many of us oft forget about. It's a game that we all cherish, yet also one that's very easy to have left behind: we have adult responsibilities, we have school, we have other, shorter, more concise games, we have social media, we have friends, we have blogs...the solemn beauty of playing the game itself is, for many viewers like myself, not much more than a memory, something that can feel ever so difficult to recreate without feeling as if something's wrong.
We...I'm...not a kid anymore.
There was nothing about i love(d) you's concept that necessitated it to be more than just the mashup. There rip had no need for visuals that'd help convey the edit like with Plantasia 2 or Luna, mi Amor, no need to tickle the funnybone like with SUNGORE or the hundreds of other YTPMV rips on the channel. Yet, halfway through the rip, to the tune of Eilish's soothingly reverberating vocals, the background begins to change, not to a bit, not to a reference nor easter egg...but to Minecraft. To where all of this attachment began - to a far-off view of the game's beautiful landscapes as the sun begins to rises. That digital world that looks different for every player, yet the same in everyone's hearts - that place that, no matter how many years pass, how long its been since we last played, we all love. Its impact different to everyone, yet the feeling unanimous. It drives home how well the mashup works not just as a mixture of two deeply emotional songs, but as music tied to a shared experience: all of our Minecraft worlds looked different, all of our personal lives look different, but we've all played the game, and we've all had affection for it.
Every moment I spend thinking about this rip aches in some way. It's been well past two years since it was first uploaded, yet it continues to follow me as the years go on, my mouse drawn to it any time it reappears in my recommendations. In being featured on 2024's Now That's What I Call Quality! 3, I think the team holds much the same sentiment - even as the months pass, i love(d) you is the kind of rip that'll never fall out of favor, never stop meaning things to people. And realizing that it was made by vvsvlogs, the very same vvsvlogs who's already made me far too emotionally vulnerable on here twice before, has only made it mean that extra bit more to me.
I'm not a kid anymore. I know that. But I'll always be grateful to SiIvaGunner, the people behind it, and those who follow it along with me, for being able to bring me back to that state of mind when I least expect it.
Thank you.
