New York is home to some of the most attractive clothing brands in the world. These brands are essential to anyone who loves fashion. The New York-based company Sies Marjan creates clothing that emphasizes your unique body features. Sies Marjan offers a broad assortment of clothing styles, including an elegant and satin dress or plus-size pants. 1. Sies Marjan Sander Lak, a Dutch designer, launched Sies Marjan in 2016. It's a premium ready to wear label. After having graduated from Central Saint Martins, he worked at Dries van Noten until launching his own label. His primary focus is on color, fit and fabric. He enjoys mixing unexpected colours into his bold designs.

It has a loyal fan base and is renowned for its use in jewel-toned sparkling shades in its designs. The brand was revived in New York in 2016 and made a big impact with the splash of rainbow colors. It was shut down in 2020, but its influence is still felt. The present edition of The Colors of Sies Marjan is a retracing of the label's five-year history. Rizzoli edited it and included highly illustrated references, notes, best bits and highlights from campaigns and collections. The chart shows the brand's revolutionary path. 2. Tier NYC Founded in 2014 by Brooklyn natives Nigeria Ealey, Esaie Jean Simon and Victor James, Tier NYC is a striking clothing brand with a fresh take on the fashion industry. Although they're not style creators, the Tier NYC founders have a strong background in the art of graphic design and illustration, as is evident in their clothing collections. The French Terry hoodies and sweatpants along with shorts and tees are offered in a variety of styles that can be worn throughout the throughout the year. With an eye for specifics, they also make unique camo designs and a practical style. Ealey, Jean Simon, and James thought it was time for their company to grow after having taken part in Harlem Fashion Row's annual fashion show. On Friday, they launched a 975 square-foot boutique in the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. 3. CD Greene CD Greene is well-known for creating custom-made clothes that highlight the feminine silhouette. Every piece of ornamentation is chosen with the customer in mind, so that the dress doesn't overshadow her. Bergdorf Goodman also displays his workwith his clothes that are displayed in the windows of the Christmas season. A metallic, translucent jumpsuit is set with a model playing a trumpet, while a second dress is on a twirling Mermaid model. CD Greene's creations pay homage to his roots in sculpture, with a particular focus on form, asymmetrical balance and texture. His signature designs, created in mirrors and crystal, are adored by Hollywood royalty and musicians. 4. Lemlem After a trip Ethiopia, Liya Kebede, an extremely popular model, established Lemlem in 2007 (meaning "to bloom and grow" to blossom and flourish" in Amharic). This was to preserve weaving and create jobs for local artisans. It's a chic, modern collection of women's and children's clothing that is both contemporary and unmistakably African. The label's net sustainability program assures that each piece is produced exclusively by hand in Africa. This is a way to support local talent and keeps the continent's textile industry thriving. Among the brand's eye-catching offerings are breezy gauze dresses and kaftans that are adorned with vibrantly embroidery patterns. 5. Tia Adeola Tia Adeola was the idea of Teni Adeola, a Nigerian-born designer. She was born in London. She launched her brand from her dorm, using art history as her inspiration. Her specialty is ruffles, Lace and lace that recall the Renaissance. Every piece is adorned with feminine touches. She's also adept in creating stunning outfits that make you feel like you're wearing a piece of art on your body. Adeola is a popular choice for sexy clothing and her fall/winter 2023 collection at New York Fashion Week showed the talent she has to be. When working with the movement of time I wanted to research artists who have explored this topic. One artwork in particular which stood out to me was Jean Morin's "Memento Mori".

This piece has three representations of time. The skull is an obvious metaphor for death and how it is the inevitable representation to the end of our own time. We also see quite a literal representation of time with the watch on the left hand side. This clearly shows the movement of time itself and how it is never ending. On the right hand side of the piece is a withering flower. It represents the movement of time as the flower grows and slowly withers after it was cut away from the root. We know that before the flower withered away it was beautiful and perfectly healthy.
I found this piece very inspiring for my animation and also my whole project in general. Although I know I wont have the time to do something like the style Morin uses in this piece for my animation, I do like the simple black and white and cross hatching in the background. It might be something I will explore in graphic design. I am very inspired by the withering flower. I have an idea for my own animation of a tree growing in the background to represent the movement of time. I think the withering aspect of the flower is interesting and it is similar to how people age and wrinkle over time. I think this might be something I would like to explore when I am working on other electives.
I was thinking that to show the withering aspect of the flower through my own way, I want to show the tree altering through different seasons as it grows, in winter time the leaves on the tree will be gone and in the summer it will be bright and vibrant.

Many other artists also explore this narrative of "Memento Mori" which in latin means "remember you must die". These artworks often deal with the subject of death and as long as you're living you should remind yourself that your time will always come to an end. Lots of Dutch artists explore this very topic such as Davidsz de Heem's "Still Life with Ham, Lobster and Fruit".
Although at first glance the painting seems to be a simple still life of fruit on a table it holds a deeper meaning. Many fruit are in this painting resembles the ideology of Memento Mori, saying that although the fruit is ripe now, later on as time moves the fruit will rot and decompose. This is to say all organic life will die and be returned to the Earth.
There are many ways in which these paintings can be interpreted. In a more negative view it can cause a sense of dread and hopelessness in the face of death, seeing as there is no way to prevent it. It can consume your everyday life and even something as simple as a piece of fruit can remind you of your inevitable end. In a more positive view it can motivate a person. You only have so much time to do things in this life and to use it as best as you can. Although there's reminders of death everywhere you look at it as a reminder that everyone else is also in this same position as you and you are not alone in the face of death.
For the future I would like to explore both sides of this subject matter as I find it to be an interesting topic. I also like to explore how even after your own death, time will keep moving and the cycle continues.

I decided to reread this because I loved the movie adaptation, but I didn’t remember a lot about what happened in the graphic novel. It’s much more different than I realised, but I love them both!

This was amazing and I’m anxiously awaiting the final chapter…

If you can read Dutch I highly recommend this collection of poetry on gender, transition, xenophobia, immigration, and complicated family relationships written in language mixing evocative metaphors with stark reality.

Another Dutch poetry collection, this one dealing with themes of not fitting in, gender dysphoria, loving the strange(r) in language that is somehow detached and touching at the same time.
• The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson (audio)
rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
I enjoyed this standalone mystery more than the Truly Devious trilogy, because I found it much more satisfying to see a mystery set up, unraveled and solved in a single book rather than over the course of a series (in which the ending was a bit anticlimactic).

Now, the biggest sports club in the world is celebrating that lifeblood with a capsule that unites as it invites in a new generation: the Nike FC Barcelona x Patta collection, which includes select apparel pieces and a limited-edition Air Max Plus.
As an innovative leader in streetwear, Patta was a natural collaborative partner for the capsule, working with Nike and FC Barcelona to bring its bold graphic philosophy from the streets to the pitch. The Dutch brand furthers the 50-year coach and player exchange between the Netherlands and Barcelona. Patta also highlights FCB’s Dutch-Suriname player connection through its founders, Guillaume Schmidt and Edson Sabajo, both of whom are Dutch-Surinamese. 
“Patta has a long-standing history with football and football jerseys, and if you know us, you know that we only do things that are true to who we are,” says Schmidt. “Amsterdam and Barcelona have been connected for generations, and modern football is still dominated by adaptations of the Dutch School. A long line of Dutch players transferred to FC Barcelona in their career, with many of these players sharing our Surinamese roots. All of this makes working with Nike on this collection a dream come true.”
The ultimate expression of FC Barcelona passion is the idea of shared Barça blood — no matter where you’re from, being a Culer runs through your veins. To capture and visualize this visceral idea, Patta creative director Vincent van de Waal says the label worked with Nike and FCB on an inspired creative filter: the human heart and circulatory system pumping that blood through veins (blau) and arteries (grana), representing the Blaugrana pulse of Culers everywhere.
This expression is represented in graphics across the collection’s apparel — which includes jerseys (available in men, women and kids fits), an anthem jacket and pant, hoodies, T-shirts, and a cap — and through the Barça-inspired colorways of the capsule’s limited-edition Air Max Plus shoe. The Air Max Plus x FC Barcelona x Patta has a fluid gradient of Deep Royal Blue and Noble Red painting the upper and midfoot plate. The Barça club crest graces the special-edition dubraes, while lace tips evoke the stripes of the Senyera, the national Catalan flag.
From the 50-year fan to the newly anointed, the Nike FC Barcelona x Patta collection connects everyone to their shared Blaugrana blood.
The Nike FC Barcelona x Patta collection will be available October 13 online and at Patta stores and October 16 on the SNKRS app, fcbarcelona.com and in select Nike partner stores. The first album artwork I chose is from the album The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me by Brand New, released on November 21, 2006. The album was released on my twelfth birthday, and I begged my dad to take me to Barnes & Noble to buy it that very day. We listened to it on the drive home as I scrutinized the cover, a girl eavesdropping on a conversation between masked hooded figures on the crumbling house’s stoop. I learned that my dad and I share an appreciation for post-hardcore music, and that musicians aren’t required to put their name or album title on the cover of the album itself. The color palette is earthy, tending towards somber with a subtle pop of red in the top right corner, and the textures of the cracking paint, stone, fur, hair, leaves, and a variety of fabrics balance each other. The golden section is utilized when looking at the division of the field among the human subjects.
The second album artwork is from Bon Iver’s self-titled album released in 2011, created by artist Gregory Euclide in collaboration with Justin Vernon, the musician. It reminds me of Fleet Foxes’ self-titled album from 2008, which is a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a major figure during the Dutch Renaissance. What I love about Euclide’s work is not only the texture, but how he accomplished it­­—juxtaposing man-made materials like paper, photo transfer, and improperly-discarded polystyrene foam with naturally-occurring materials like moss, snow, roots, and pigment from flower petals. Euclide gives dimension to the work by folding and tearing the paper, introducing topographical elements to a natural setting. The artwork activates a feeling of being out in nature, overwhelmed and surrounded by all that is not man-made, which fits this album’s sonic qualities perfectly. In an interview he gave with Art LTD. Magazine, Euclide says of his work, "When you see a human figure you identify with the form, what they are doing, and that becomes the emphasis. By showing just the land without humans I'm able to show it as it is and what they've left behind." The work follows the Z-pattern, tracking the eye across the work to take in elements that may seem simplistic at first glance.
The next album is one that was never actually made beyond the artwork: Intravenus de Milo by the fictional band Spinal Tap. This is Spinal Tap is a mockumentary that riffs on the classic styles of documentaries about bands. A running joke throughout the film is the controversy surrounding the graphic nature of their forthcoming album Smell the Glove, which is eventually released as a completely black sleeve with no identifying marks, logos, or wording at all. During an interview, the band recounts past album cover artworks from their career, as the images of the albums flash on screen. Intravenus de Milo is simple, irreverent, funny, and follows some basic design tenants. The gradient of the background gives the sense of a museum setting, highlighting the humor of the manipulation of such a classic, recognizable statue. Though I would’ve personally done the font differently, it does come off like an album from the 70s in terms of typography, color palette, and spacing. The frame is balanced, with the statue and IV bag are clearly the most important elements, and the band name as the next important, shown through scale and detail in typography.
Finally, we have the album Crazy for You by Best Coast. I love this album artwork because of how reminiscent the style is to collage and postcard styles. The color theory at work here is beautiful, and using the map as the fill for the block text of the band’s name adds a sense of dynamism that I feel is reflected in the surf rock, recorded-in-someone’s-dad’s-garage quality of the music of this album. For all the attention to detail—the shadows of the trees following the angle of the sunset, the waves, the waterline, the leaves of the trees—one of the most carefully-placed elements was a cover-up of a mistake. When commissioned for this artwork, artist David Rager was given only one instruction: “Put Snacks (the singer’s cat) on the cover.” Rager placed a thin outline of California over where Snacks’ tail would be, had it not been cut off in the original photo. It works geographically, anatomically, and stylistically.

Thus With a Kiss I Die
A classically tragic romance.
Dutch x GN!Reader
Warnings: RDR1 SPOILERS, non-graphic death that could be triggering, one "reference" to reader being female

After the dreadful events in that cursed place, Beaver Hollow, you followed Dutch. Willingly? You weren't sure.
You'd been together for a few years then, you didn't feel you could abandon him. When his guns were drawn, one of them pointed at the men he called his sons, the last of your faith in him fell through the cracks. You couldn't say the same for your love for the man though. You stayed with Dutch, because even though his actions contradicted the values he'd preached for so long, his love for you, and your love for him changed, but it remained, nonetheless.
It'd be years since the final fall of Dutch's Boys. And through it all, you stayed by his side. For a few years, it was just the two of you. You were there when Dutch shot rotten old Micah Bell, you harboured a few gold bricks that kept you guys afloat for some time. You looked at John and Sadie with sadness, they at you with pity it seemed like. But Dutch didn't mention the tears he saw gathering in your eyes, and when you asked if he wanted to talk about all that, he was quick to shut you down.
The biggest change in your dynamic with Dutch was the roles you held for the other. Before, it was often Dutch holding you to his chest at night, soothing you whenever you were upset or hurt. But now it was often the other way around. You knew that watching his first boy die on that cliffside drove a knife straight into his heart, even if it didn't seem like it, especially at the time. Everybody thought it was something before Beaver Hollow, but as far as you knew, it was right after Beaver Hollow that did the real damage.
Hosea's death made Dutch heartless, but Arthur's death made Dutch insane.
You mostly felt sorry for Dutch. You had only heard tales of the gang handing back stolen wealth, but you felt sorry for him because his vision was clouded with greed. And you were unable to blame him for that. It was arguable that you were blinded by greed as well, too selfish to do the right thing and let the broken man go, and find a better life for yourself. But you remembered the Dutch you first met, the robin hood, the romantic, and the leader.
Sometimes you'd see a sliver of that Dutch, which reminded you that it was still the same man you had met so long ago now.
The classical music snob was back on show now. The familiar crackle of the gramophone brought you back to everybody dancing and laughing in camp. "This piece is called, 'la fille aux cheveux de lin', do you know what that means, darling?" Dutch asked, his thick accent butchering the french more or less.
"No I don't, what does it mean, Dutch?" You asked with your one hand in his and your other placed on his shoulder, while you danced slowly around the main room of the cabin you were currently holed up in. There was no stress, no second guessing, just the sound of piano and each other's calm voices.
"The girl with the flaxen hair. It reminds me of you a little." He said.
"Why's that?" You returned, speaking just above a whisper while you looked up at him, noticing the small details of his face, the roots of grey hair starting to show near his sideburns, the trimmed beard he was sporting in order to disguise himself while you stayed here, a grim reminder that this stillness wouldn't last forever, no matter how hard you wished.
"It symbolizes innocence. I suppose it means simplicity too, but you're surly not simple." He chuckled, pulling you closer to him gently.
"I'm not innocent either, Dutch, you know that." You countered, now leaning your head onto his shoulder.
"You don't have a tainted bone in your body." He mumbled, pressing a kiss to the top of your head afterwards.
That was only his belief. Maybe that was true at the start of your relationship, but since then, you'd killed, robbed, and loved a man like him, you were anything but innocent.
Later that night you laid in bed beside one another, chests rapidly rising and falling from a lustful activity. Dutch turned to look at you, leaning closer to kiss your temple, he said, "We have to leave tomorrow, we've been in the same place for too long now, and there aren't any leads in town."
You didn't turn to look at him, you instead turned to face away from him, deciding not to reply. Seemingly content with your silence as an answer, Dutch went to sleep, leaving you awake to stare out at the small cabin you'd only just grown comfortable in. There was never stillness with Dutch van der Linde, never could be.

Over the years, you and Dutch continued moving, and Dutch continued making no small name for himself wherever you went. You knew that it was inevitable that Dutch would collect a group of followers again, he did have you tied to him after all.
It was different this go around though, there was so many men in this gang, you didn't know half of them even, it was obvious Dutch didn't either. It amazed you how he could spew out some philosophy to the group, then get them to almost the opposite, and they did not even realize.
You condemned Dutch almost daily, telling him it was wrong to be doing this much crime on such a large scale. But he would rope you back in every time. Ever since the infamous narcissist gained a worship group again, he'd brought back the romance and the charisma he'd possessed before. Willing your anger and frustration away with pretty words and sweet caresses.
As you looked around this fortress that Dutch had resurrected, an aching anxiety nearly made you feel sick. You watched the boys talking and laughing, Dutch was out doing God knows what.
The laughter that filled the camp wasn't like it was in the original Van Der Linde crew. You didn't even know these people. And you missed everybody dearly, and the guilt you felt for abandoning them made your body rack with sobs almost daily, especially as of late. But it seemed like some magical spell kept you with Dutch. Or maybe it was a curse.
Because Dutch was so skillful at running his mouth, you were normally kept in the dark of the new gang's criminal affairs. Only wearily waiting for Dutch to return each night and solemnly celebrating with him when they got a score.
When you were in town the other week, you heard the paper boy shouting about the government issued death of a notorious gunslinger, Javier Escuella. Your stomach churned. Outlaws were being hunted like buffalo. Taken down one by one.
A loud explosion brought you from your thoughts, distant gunshots rang out after. Somebody was attacking the fort. "Get yourselves together and fight, boys!" Dutch's voice boomed out, you could see him enthusiastically raise his arms while he spoke, almost like he was excited for bloodshed. Hosea and Arthur would be disgusted.
The cracks of fire still sounded far away enough, you left the safety of the cabin to see what was happening, you looked to Dutch, he looked erratic. "Dutch? What's going on?" You wondered, you sentence inturupted halfway through by this yelling.
"Oh, just some people who are scared of the truth my dear!" He laughed manically, you looked at the man who was unrecognizable from the inside. The sound of gunshots grew closer, and now military commands could be heard from where you stood. What a sad death this would be. Dying for love was brave, but could you even call this dying for love.
Now hidden against one of the log walls, you felt Dutch squeeze your hand. "I love you." He spoke softly for once, looking at you as sincerely as he could muster. You didn't get a chance to say it back because before you could even open your mouth, Dutch brought you close for a passionate kiss, holding the sides of your face instead of holding a gun.
Another explosion brought you two apart, and then without a second glance, Dutch waltzed off.
"Looks like it's just me and you, John!"
John? There was no way. You peeked out from the wall only to have your question deemed true. Behind one of the crates, you could see the top of his familiar hat. Dutch had mentioned the government not believing his philosophy, but that was nothing new. But he never brought up anything about John somehow being involved.
Dutch cursed out more threats before picking up the crank of the gatling gun and firing at the man who was once his son. You watched with horror. Ever skilled, John took out the remainder of Dutch's men, and your heart hurt for them, because you knew they didn't deserve to die for Dutch. It seemed all your heart did lately was ache, swell, and then shrivel up again, repeat. It was growing old.
You gasped when John shot the lantern which ignited the platform you were both stood on. Dutch yelled and cursed, making a mad dash. He didn't even bother to get to you. But you ran after him, when you probably should've just run the opposite way. When Dutch grabbed your hand to help you keep up with him you ripped it away, too disgusted to touch him right now, you also glanced back often to see John running after the both of you.
"You can't erase the past, John! Killing me won't make it go away!" Dutch shouted from the top of the ladder, letting a few more bullets go. But you noticed that he wasn't remotely aiming at John.
The end. The cave opened up to the cliffside, nothing but a deadly drop below. You looked at Dutch, who peeked over the edge, his gun still in his hold. Before John emerged from the cave, he kissed your hand, keeping it in his afterwords.
"Hello again, John," He said, now faced with the barrel of John's gun. "Hello, Dutch, Y/N." John returned, glancing over to you every few seconds.
"we gotta stop meeting like this," Dutch joked, you couldn't tell how he was feeling right now, he was a Russian roulette revolver right now.
Dutch said the famous words for which too many people had fallen victim to, "I've got a plan, John."
"You've always got a plan, Dutch."
"This is a good one." You watched Dutch toss his gun off the edge, and John holstered his in return. Wether your nerves eased or heightened, you weren't sure. But you were sure that Dutch's hold on your hand tightened immensely.
"Can't always fight nature, John," He huffed, his free hand now holding onto a wound on his side, "we can't fight change, can't fight gravity, we can't fight nothing."
John watched him intensely, the stern look on his face never faltering.
"My whole life all I ever did was fight," Dutch swayed as he spoke, tired and out of breath, he was scaring you more than he ever had before.
"Then give up, Dutch." John barked.
"But I can't give up, I can't fight my own nature that's a paradox, John, you see?"
"Then I have to shoot you." He threatened, you looked over to Dutch, the crazed look in his eye ceased, he just looked tired and sad, like he did at the cabin all those years ago, "When I'm gone they'll just find another monster, they have to, because they have to justify their wages." Dutch explained, altering the situation to his ideas again. You'd never heard him call himself a monster, not even after he watched his own son die.
"That's their business."
"Our time has past, my love." Dutch stood up straight, and as you looked from him to John you could feel his weight in your hand pulling back, trying to pull you with him. You let go.

control: the artist’s experience of mental illness
Define madness.
The word recurs in our every day vernacular — careless, evocative but meaningless, an anodyne catch-all curiously leached of judgement, describing everything in our lives that tap-dances on the edge of the rash, chaotic, irrational, or ecstatic, often in those sporadic moments in which we cede that which we value most in our fragile social order: control. It is a word almost as ancient and mutable as civilisation itself: born of Old English, gemædde, derived from Old Saxon and Norse, became madnesse in the late 14th century Middle English, and used just as promiscuously as it is today.
It’s ironic, then, that madness is no longer much used to describe mental illness. Psychiatric professionals and carers discourage it, sensitive to hackneyed images of straitjackets and padded cells, the unruly spill of bedlams. But no other word feels quite as adequate for those of us who are in its grip. The precision of diagnostic terminology is illusive. It doesn’t begin to describe the recalcitrant scratchiness of disordered thoughts, the high def’ b-roll of delusion, the fetid bog of chronic depression, or the seductive, messianic rush of mania. Madness is persistent, unnavigable disarray; for those it visits, always unbidden, unhinged acceptance of it can morph into a corrosive embrace.
I saw — still see — my own half a century of madness as a shipwreck, from which, in the end, hospitalisation, drugs and interrogatory therapy failed to rescue me, and even if they staunched the worst breaches, they couldn’t limit the debris field. In recent years, only the brave, the few who truly loved me, have remained to help with the salvage. None of them would want to relive the experience. I try, from time to time, in words and images, but I am not artist enough to come up with anything other than the occasional prosaic testimony, like the witness report of a crime.
It’s ironic, then, that madness is no longer much used to describe mental illness. Psychiatric professionals and carers discourage it, sensitive to hackneyed images of straitjackets and padded cells, the unruly spill of bedlams. But no other word feels quite as adequate for those of us who are in its grip.
The women featured in this exhibition are all witnesses of madness — their own, that of a friend or loved one, or of patients — and in their work, each has tried to combine specific emotional and psychological contexts with intense curiosity about how the metaphors inherent in mental illness might be rendered visually.
The British artist Antonia Atwood’s five-minute, bi-cameral video, My Mother Tongue, studies fragments of her own mother, who has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, as she sleeps, interposing abstract, animated graphical elements, cool/hot clusters that resemble neural scans, in an attempt to convey the fizzing lability of her mother’s internal and external experiences. “It is not,” Atwood reminds us, “about communicating a straightforward message.”
Ayala Gazit, an American-Israeli artist, never met her older half-brother, James before he killed himself. He was born in Israel during a previous relationship her father had, and moved at a young age to Australia with his mother. Ayala found out about him when she was 12. Thirteen years later, Ayala went in search of him: “I wanted to better understand who I’d been mourning all these years.” The result is “an alternative family album, where James exists”, consisting of family snapshots, letters, and Gazit’s own diaristic photographs.
The Dutch photographer, Laura Hospes’ work is a forensic self-examination of her own depression and anxiety, her image-making being “a way of making clear what is inside”.  Her persistent, frank engagement with a dysthymic self roots a subtle, introspective narrative binding individual images that might, at first, appear obscure or disconnected but soon resonate with our common understanding of depression’s quotidian toll. There is, too, the sticky residue of Hospe’s capacity for self-negation.
The ‘affect’ of mental illness occupies Argentinian Flavia Schuster, both as an artist and as a student of clinical psychology. Her portraits of patients confined to mental hospitals in her home country eschew the formality and detachment of a professional encounter, enabling the unsettling directness of each subject’s gaze and the tension between resignation and frustration in their postures catalyse an atavistic fear in the unwary viewer that is visceral and cautionary, as if madness might somehow be infective.
And maybe, in some circumstances, it can be. Everywhere in Welsh photographer Katy Lane’s documentary glimpses of life within a legendary psych-rock band, Brian Jonestown Massacre, led by her husband, Anton Newcombe, there are intimations of an undiagnosed collective imbalance, in which madness is almost indistinguishable from inspiration (ironically, Anton, who is bi-polar and a recovered junkie, might be the least affected). The images are a form of guarded self-analysis for Lane herself; she shares with those she portrays a history of mental instability and substance abuse.
I once wrote this about my own madness:
“There are memories I have that I know are real, and there are those I suspect or know are not. Then there are the nulls, the irrecoverable blank spots, as dark and impenetrable as the dead screen of a TV. I hear from others about something I said or did in the past and I have no recollection of it at all: it’s as if they’re talking about a stranger. I’m gripped by a need to reach back into my past and salvage whatever fragments of my memories I can find. But it’s a flawed ambition: so much wreckage, physical and emotional, is strewn across nearly half a century… whatever I come up with can only be a skeletal approximation of the real thing.”
The artists in this exhibition have each been more successful in extracting something life-affirming and, in some way, life-preserving from their ongoing — and maybe inescapable — experience of madness. And yet there is nothing palliative in their work, no misplaced optimism, no illusion of an end-point. The result is art at its most rational.
