Doodling several concepts of boots for the character on whom they would be impossible to see is really one of THE most Fromsoft moments XD
Tfw mister Miyazaki is asleep and the boys can FINALLY design a female character that isn't barefoot

Dark Souls 1 faces references Part 3: Pharis/Evlana, Americus, Forest Hunter (Cleric), Beatrice, Dusk
Pharis/Evlana
Unfortunately, the name and relevance of this character can be easy to miss, as the game Dark Souls 1 simply labels this character as 'Forest Hunter Archer'! However, Japanese guide book confirms this IS 弓の英雄ファリス (Pharis, the heroic archer)!
( x )
+ As for questions regarding this character's pronoun or why Evlana (I just sense some of you here refused to play Dark Souls 2.....), here ( x ) is the separate short post for explanation!
Americus
This character is the knight lady amongst the Forest Hunters! And yet, again, her name is only revealed in Japanese guide:
( x )
騎士アメリクス (Knight Americus)!
Funny enough, this character appears to be literally duplicated just to make player's experience more painful! You will find TWO of this NPC in the woods, identical in absolutely everything but pose, but both do not respawn and there is a mention of only one name according to Japanese guide!
Forest Hunter (Cleric)
Character that uses Soothing Sunlight (one of Gwynevere's miracles granted to her maidens), and also went on pilgrimage according to her equipment!
Beatrice
Definitely looks nothing like her concept and even the unused child model, but I suppose keeping the originally planned colors would just plagitarize a Berserk character at that rate..
(Look at Beatrice's unused young model: ( x ))
I do think keeping the wand instead of giving her a shield would be a better idea! Like the wand could've been Miracles catalyst! Too OP, perhaps....?
Dusk
Like I said before, whereas I assumed her eyes to be just green, they are, in fact, barely green! Almost grey!
The ingame hairstyle is valid, of course, as she is the only NPC who uses it AND it still technically has her have long hair, only all tied up! But still, as far as depicting her goes, I think the really long braid feels more like an implication? Just limitations of NPC models again, really

This was definitely the hardest artwork to create out of the series so far, I'm happy with how the hair and wings turned out though.

(Obligatory reminder to myself that I have tumblr...) ANYWAY! I hadn't written a fanfic in years, and I especially had never posted a fic before this one... so of course, my debut had to be a 200k+ word Dark Souls lore retelling (with heavy doses of nkstein angst because of course). And as of today (Nov 3, 2024), A Flame's Consequence (AFC) has come to an end 💙
I've learned a lot while writing this, and there is SO much that I would improve if I were to rewrite this from scratch. Though considering this was my first fic (at least, my first public one), I think it turned out pretty alright :) I'll miss AFC dearly, but I'm also excited to work on new writing projects (both my current WIPs being Soulsborne)! 💙💙

very interesting how Alsanna and Filianore looks so similiar
this basically confirms that Manus was from the Ringed City at some point, doesn't it?
Manus being from the Ringed City was very in contact with Filianore, and the gods. he then went to Oolacile for some reason, here's what i think:
i still believe that Manus is the Furtive Pygmy, i think it's a very reasonable theory. i mean, being such an important character lore-wise related to humanity, dark and the abyss, why would he be a random human?
Manus and the Pygmy Lords got segregated in the Ringed City by Gwyn, which was a beautiful city blocked in time so that the humans couldn't enter in the annals of history.
but Manus was suspicious of Gwyn and his plans, and was scared of what Gwyn could've done to him and his children a.k.a the humans.
Manus then left the Ringed City and went to Oolacile, who was a city very tied with Light and Gwyn.
either he went there to warns everyone about Gwyn's plans or maybe he just wanted to chill with the other humans now that he finally escaped from the gods. (even though they tortured him later on, my man can't catch a break lmao)
Manus' fear got more aggravated after Gwyn started using humanities to rekindle the Flame, but he knew he couldn't do nothing about it. (note: i'm not tryna demonizing Gwyn, i actually love that paranoid old man🫶)
i found very symbolic how Alsanna resemble Manus' fear and is similiar to Filianore, representing Manus' fear for Gwyn, for the gods.
important to point out how also Nashandra and Dusk are very similiar
Nashandra resembles Manus' want, and being similiar to Dusk is probably because she gifted him the pendant, the thing that Manus "wanted" from us when we picked it up.
while for Elana and Nadalia they don't look like someone in specific but still, Nadalia resembles Manus' loneliness, because hey, Manus felt alone his entire life, to the Ringed City where he was segregated, to Oolacile where he got tortured in the dungeons.
while for Elana... i actually don't know about her... other that she resembles Manus' anger when he trasformed into a reckless beast...
i just love DS details that would make DS2 haters say "they just didn't think about it!! it's only a coincidence!!" lol
(also this was very rushed so there may be a few errors...) (also merry christmas!!)

one thing that i find interesting is that even though we never get to interact with Marika directly, only knowing her via obscure cutscenes and other characters' dialogue... she actually displays a wide range of emotions as much as any other NPCs.
her statues depict her as having a warm, gentle smile:
the Mimic veil description points to her playful, mischievous side:
(it's a popular theory in the JP/Asian side of the fandom that it's sth from her childhood - hence the "Marika's Mischief", not "Queen Marika's", and she used it to escape the grisly fate befalling her family.
additionally, its equivalence in Dark Souls is also something described as "the mischief of a young girl who sought relief from the solitude of the woods at dusk", aka Princess Dusk who hails from "Oolacile, land of ancient golden sorceries", but i digress)
her portrait, the story trailer's "Queen Marika was driven to the brink" and Gideon's dialogue after the player defeated Malenia pointed out her sorrow:
(back when i first played the base game, this is the portrait that drove my eyes most in Roundtable Hold. i kept gazing at her - the Queen with permanently lowered eyes, and thought "there is a girl in there")
The bat lady's song, Messmer's entire Crusade, all those conflicts to establish the Erdtree, shows her anger, and the cruelty she's capable of:
Then there's Shaman's village, the clinic underneath Shadow Keep, the golden braid, the Minor Erdtree, the sealing of Death - that points to grief, trauma, survivor guilt, kindness, and the ruinous drive for revenge that results in the above path down hell:
(there's also a theory for the Crusade's headless statue being a reminder for the Hornsent of what they put Marika's mother through, but it's not concrete canon so here is the link if you want to check it out)
The fact that all of Erdtree's incantations are heal and protection spells (with only one exception of Wrath of Gold spell which was found after the Elden Ring was shattered), the Capitol's Perfumers originally being blessed healers, and that all Erdtree blessings come in the shape of tears give the picture of Marika's gentle wish at the beginning: to heal everything and everyone.
(and to me personally, there's a kind of vulnerability and honesty in showing your tears to the world and let it be your power to heal at the same time.)
the eye she blessed Messmer with (i do think the Eng translation at some part lost the sentiment of the JP text - that the eye is always referred to as a blessing)
the blessing flask that - unlike its Dark Souls equivalent (which ranges from 6-13 flasks), only have 4 available to us player, heal all ailments and status effect, and specified as sth made for Messmer.
the Marika's soreseal in the Haligtree + the waterfall near Godwyn's final resting place
the Regal Omen Bairn (that was fashioned after the Jizo statue - sth made by grieving parents wishing for protection for their deceased child in the afterlife)
the blessing, gifts, equipment that Messmer and Godwyn's personal knights all get
the fact that Marika's bedchamber and the Impaler's Catacomb (which is the only catacomb in the base game to have the spike trap mechanic used in catacombs in the DLC) remain the proof of Messmer's existence in the base game
how Godwyn's ending is the only ending where the mending rune is placed on the position of Marika's womb (the lower arc or the Elden Ring - also referred to as the basin in which its blessings pool)
that's a whole barrage of motherhood. the love, the fear, the postpartum depression, the guilt and anxiety, (the occasional scheming for revenge with her son). and despite how flawed and tragic that love ends up being for all of them, it is there.
(there's a whole subplot about how Messmer is the only demigod to be called ugly in-game (Hornsent npc dialogue) while Boc's questline is about how his mother being the only one to always assure him he's beautiful, despite everyone else calling him ugly. and how each NPCs questline does reflect a wider theme seen in Marika and her children. but again, i digress)
every time i think of her, Marika is a constantly shifting kaleidoscope, holding everything from within (the beauty and the malign, light and dark, birth and death, she's warm and gentle, she's cruel and unjust, she's strong and kind, she's weak and resentful, she's sweet and she's bitterness made flesh)... and i could only stand there and admire it all.
#elden ring#queen marika the eternal#my uwu baby with a disorder#every time i do the ending the only thing in my head is “to you who bloomed and fell away as a fruitless flower. farewell”#she got me writing essays like the average fandom male character analysis :)#messmer the impaler#er brainrot#golden doomed mother and son#ending this year with another marika rant like god intended

Some Dark Souls 1 data updates
Look who gets to eat their words lol! Turns out Reah doesn't have pure grey eyes, she has greenish grey!
And Dusk, who I assumed had much greener eyes, actually has even GREYER green eyes!
..yeah, I ended up talking with a person who can actually rip characters face data and who is still in the process, but there are some nice references already! Good news: Ciaran is still up to interpretation! Turns out that in PTDE edition (aka pre Remastered), Ciaran just shares face data with Dusk!
Another news: Anastacia DOES use unique model, actually! And it does not have eye texture.
However, the NPC model for Anastacia still exists in game files! That one with strawberry blonde hair and dark green eyes!
Since this is the only hint at devs' intention for her eyes we get, I think it is safe to assume dark green eyes for her!
I will share if there is anything else coming up!
