Athens and Sparta Adventures: Chapter 9: Libation Bearers pg. 5
[previous] [contents] [next]
Quick Ref:
Epidamnos: Although not mentioned by name here, Epidamnos was the colony co-founded by Corinth and her colony, Corcyra that would become a point of contention between the two. Today, the site is in Durrës in modern Albania.
Chalcedon: One of Megara's early colonies in Asia Minor which would get tossed around between Persia, Sparta and Athens quite a bit.
Byzantium: Another of Megara's early colonies located directly across from Chalcedon, although you may know it better as Istanbul was Constantinople now it's Istanbul not Constantinople been a long time gone, Constantinople~ (and hey, the song is Canadian!)
Comments:
The wall Megara is referring to was first proposed allllll the way back in chapter 3. Corinth eventually did build her own long walls to protect her harbour, similar to Athens' long walls to Piraeus.
The "since you are so known for doing that" snipe is a reference to the stereotype that Megarians were somewhat two-faced and likely to go back on their word (though, this could very likely be an Athenian sentiment).
Megara founded her colonies Chalcedon and Byzantium shortly after fighting a war of independence with Corinth in the 7th century BCE. "Little Meg" refers to Megara Hyblaea on the island of Sicily, which had been destroyed by Syracuse (one of Corinth's colonies) a few years before Athens was razed by the Persians in the early 5th century BCE.

You are mistaken. Mushka is Albanian, in her 30s, married and has a son about 8. She lives in California, elementary or middle school teacher. What makes you think that she is Canadian?
Dear Mushka Anons (there are two of you militiawomen tonight),
I did not know that (I honestly thought she was Canadian), but I have to say I do not care, just as she does not care about me.
I have absolutely nothing against Albanian people - I know a couple of those, they are absolutely remarkable diplomats and very warm, generous human beings. They have become friends.
Unlike them, Mushka is a judgmental, intolerant, petty and unworldly individual. There are good people and not so good people in any given country on Earth. Her ethnicity is no import to me, in this case, and if you think you've ingratiated yourself to me with this unsolicited trivia, Anon - you were wrong. This is the kind of data only a legit freak like Marple would appreciate.
Thanks for nothing, Anon.
This is a view of the Adriatic shore taken by me in the fabulous city of Durrës (Durazzo), in the autumn of 2009 - Albania was such a post-Mad Max place at that time, you couldn't even imagine. Can you place in on a map, Anon? I doubt it.
