#Repost @thebullsofdurham (with @report.for.insta) ... 🐂Richard Fitzgerald’s bricks 🧱 *literally* laid the foundation for Durham’s #BlackWallStreet, which was primarily Parrish Street but also included the thriving businesses in the Hayti community that was plowed down during Urban Renewal to put in the Durham Freeway.⁠ .⁠ Entrepreneurs John Merrick, Aaron Moore, & Charles Spaulding took the next steps by ushering in North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company beginning in 1898.⁠ .⁠ Merrick had a longstanding, well-known friendship with Washington Duke.⁠ .⁠ Washington openly provided monetary support to Merrick & several other Black-owned businesses. He also openly advised Merrick in business matters, sharing insight that had long been withheld from African-Americans.⁠ .⁠ At the time this was completely unheard of in America, let alone in the South.⁠ .⁠ NC Mutual would become the largest Black-owned business in the world.⁠ .⁠ @NCMututal continues to do business over 120 years later in the Tower at Mutual Plaza located at 411 West Chapel Hill Street in Durham.⁠ .⁠ The building is in the midst of a multimillion-dollar revitalization that includes a coworking space predominately for Black-owned businesses and artists.
