I just finished episode 7 of Shou, and Izaya's phone call to Mikado is very interesting to me. He initially calls to antagonize Mikado, or at least it seems like it with how he criticized Mikado's response to the Dollars going off the rails again and his strained relationship with Masaomi.

But really, it seems more like genuine advice to me than most of the bullshit Izaya goes on about in the series. I'll be real, I personally think Izaya is more honest with Mikado than anyone else in the series. When he gives him advice, it feels a lot less manipulative than his "advice" for any other character. This is especially true compared to how he is with Masaomi. Every bit of advice Izaya ever gives Masaomi is wrapped in riddles or culminates in some sort of arm-twist to get him to do what Izaya wants. Sure, Mikado is part of Izaya's plan to awaken the head, but it seems like he has a vested interest in Mikado ultimately coming out on top. I wonder why that is? Perhaps the fact that Mikado is a direct parallel to Izaya himself within the high school trio? Izaya clearly sees himself in Mikado, and wants to support him in a way he probably didn't have when he was up-and-coming himself.

It especially comes through to me at the end of their call this episode:

"You're a good person, and that's something to be to be respected. But didn't you start the Dollars because you got bored of being respectable? An escape from the ordinary—isn't that your dream? That's why I'm worried about you. I said it before, didn't I? To enjoy an ordinary life, you have to constantly evolve. But that's definitely not something you should try to do by yourself."

Izaya ends the conversation by insisting Mikado call him by his given name, a sign of friendship and equality, and reminds him that he has lots of people in his corner—Anri, Kida, and him. It's especially notable to me that Izaya doesn't reference himself as an exclusive authority here, and even sites Masaomi (who doesn't get along with Izaya) before he references himself. If it were really a manipulative tactic to keep Mikado under his thumb, he wouldn't have suggested Mikado communicate with his friends about the problem. Hell, in the original run, Izaya's WHOLE PLAN was centered around these three NOT communicating.

What's also notable is how Mikado takes that advice. He thanks Izaya in earnest, and later reminisces how he used to think Izaya was sketchy, but he now believes he's nice.

Orihara Izaya is nice. To Ryuugamine Mikado.

I think that's kind of an important facet of Izaya's character, that he is capable of caring for others. He's just a little chosey about who in his circle actually gets that care.

revolutionary girl utena – heavy breathing panting crying what a fucking roller coaster nanami the child you are anty the child you were utena the child you choose to be – just one of the true masterpieces of all anime. took a few episodes to realize that this show understood tone and comedy perfectly and wasn’t just a wonky children’s show and by golly! the nanami in season 3 gutted me unlike anything else

attack on titan: final season (for real this time) – decent conclusion to maybe my favorite anime of all time

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (10 anime)

school rumble – so goddamn funny and i cared about every goddamn character. it’s witchcraft!

trigun – good ole saturday morning cartoons

golden kamuy s3 – how does it keep getting better???!?!

fruits basket – i was a certified hater after s1, but slowly but surely i gave into the melodrama. akito and shigure were EVERYTHING

nana – the most disappointing ending of all time! for one of the greatest anime of all time. manga pls save me!!!

rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai – i’m embarrassed. i cried.

princess tutu – expressionistic, dedicated to storytelling, tremendously kind-hearted. you have to let it move you

blue lock – i’m officially a sports anime girlie

cyberpunk: edgerunners – this was just so slick!

chainsaw man – nothing needs to be said here

yamada-kun to lv999 no koi wo suru – adult romance that hasn’t been stripped of all conflict and maintains momentum nearly to the end

oshi no ko – my expectations were non-existent after ep 1 but then it crept up on me. i can’t even fully put my finger on what works so well? but it does! it knows when to take itself seriously and when to be nonsense.

demon slayer s3 – best season of demon slayer to date, i actually cared

durarara!!x2 shou – this is a confession. my inner edgy teen loves durarara. i appreciate huge casts of characters acting in opposition in atmospheric tokyo.

gintama – i finally finished gintama one of my favorites of all time. the end pulls all the threads together but it does so at the expense of the laughs so loses some points

chihayafuru – amazing background anime. just consistently fun and engaging.

perfect blue – i feel stupid and uncultured to not give this a 10

vinland saga – askeladd is so hot wow

buddy daddies – funny and sincere in degrees but a truly annoying little girl character

serial experiments lain – god you’ve gotta appreciate the wild swings creatives were taking in the 90s

durarara!!x2 ten

great teacher onizuka – ugh he’s a creep but also heh he’s funny

trigun stampede – they yassified them!

mob psycho 100 s3 - meandered a bit but the characters are forever favorites

to your eternity – the first 3 arcs are extraordinary. march is one of the great child characters of all time. the end drags.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8 anime)

zom 100 – crazy good first episode that earns its premise and then a slow descent into mediocrity; cool colors though!

terror in resonance – utterly forgettable

dororo – way too long with way too many hit or miss episode arcs

bungou stray dogs s4 – the cracks are showing but the rampo backstory is dope

lycoris recoil – those cute girls shoulda been lesbians

classroom of the elite – is it edgy? yes. are the quotes frustratingly misused? oh yes. is it fun? ugh yeah actually

romantic killer – pretty cute and the edge of danger at the end really sells it

free – solid watch but it left my brain like sand in a sieve

wolf’s rain – what passes as deep when children are your primary audience

hell’s paradise – boring and i liked the manga so.

durarara!!x2 ketsu – the conclusion falls short

land of the lustrous – bold but was too slow for me

tomo-chan is a girl! – sometimes funny but the conceit does not justify 13 episodes and it loses steam fast

mushishi – some of the vignettes were beautiful but felt repetitive

bleach: thousand-year blood war – sleek, hype, plagued by all the old bleach problems

no game no life season 1 - confused that this was such a phenomenon when it came out. it’s fine i guess.

kamisama kiss – trite imo

given – god save us from anime about perfect people being perfect with each other – but this time set to music!

tokyo revengers s2 – 🤷

It’s been a thousand years since I posted here, but I heard from Akabayashi who heard from twitter that it’s Durarara’s 10th anniversary!!!! (for the anime at least heheh)

I’m not nearly fast enough to draw something nice and polished in one day, but I figured I could at least sketch something up for a show and fandom that brought so many great things into my life!

SO, I present to thee, the true Best Girls of Durarara!! thanks for all the good times and wonderful memories <3

Here’s Anri!

My idea for Anri is that she’s another vault dweller but I’m going to make my own experiment that vault was apart of.

So I’m going to say it’s vault 113 (I believe this is in canon one that we know nothing about)

Vault 113 was derived of a 24 families that over the 200 years in the vault turned into 3 families. This was because there was a one child cap on babies due to limited supplies.

The Kujiragi, the Sonhara and the Niekawa families all ended up having daughters. Niekawa’s mother of the family passed before they were able to try for another child hoping for a boy since the other family, Sonhara already had a daughter and were having trouble conceiving another. The kujiragi consisted only of Kasane meaning that the last real hope was for the Sonhara and the kujiragi family to continue on.

Kasane was also the current overseer of the vault, taking over for her father.

The experiment that was going on was to raise a few families around an artifact that was found in Japan that seemed to have the ability to meld with people’s consciousness and manipulate their feelings to a degree. This artifact was the blade named sika. Sika before the vault was enacted was split into two mother blades and one child. These blades were hidden in the vault and the families were left to their devices with the blades just out of reach but still able to have their effects felt.

One of the mother blades stayed with the over seer’s family to make sure that they had a weapon against the others just incase any of the other families found the other blades. The second mother blade ends up going missing any the over seer does not know which family ended up with it.

With the three families now knowing their bloodlines were doomed after Mrs Sonhara failed to conceive, Mr Sonhara turned abusive. In the night Mr Sonhara turned his anger towards his daughter. This leads Mrs Sonhara to kill her husband and herself with the second mother blade. Which is how Anri acquires the blade.

With the first kill from sika having accrued the vault is opened and Kasame sneaks Huruna the child blade before she is whisked out into the wasteland by her father.

My concept for Shizuo heiwajima if he was in the fallout series.

My vague idea for background he was born and raised in a vault and unbeknownst to his family and himself his strength was enhanced through body enhancements as a part of a vault experiment. His life got turned upside down when raiders busted in and killed most of his vaults population including his parents. He managed to save himself, his brother, Shinra and Kyohei and escape the vault together.

Shinra’s father also escaped with his own research from the vault.

This is all I got so far besides the idea that Celty is an Assaultron that lost her head and is searching for it.

My current job is pretty laidback about us having phones out and listening to music as we work sorting archaeological artifacts in a lab, so I've started binge-rewatching Durarara!! from the very beginning.

I've already finished the original run yesterday and just started x2 Shou, but some thoughts I had:

At least in the anime adaptation, the original run was meant to be pretty self-contained in the event they weren't able to continue (which to be fair was true for quite a while before x2 got greenlit), so rather than consider the original run a "phase one" of Izaya's grander scheme to start a gang war and awaken Celty's head it makes a bit more sense to think of it in the context of a failed first attempt.

In that context, it makes me wonder how he felt about it, his first grand failure. Grand enough that he felt the need to step back and lay low so he could go back to the drawing board (see: his initial conversation with Shizuo in ep 25).

I honestly bet he picked a fight with Shizuo just to take out his frustrations on it all. He managed to create a messy three-way conflict and get Celty roped into it as Anri and Mikado's friend, but the head gave narry a stir. Not to mention, Celty was able to help them resolve things pretty easily by just getting these dumb kids to actually talk to each other.

I don't remember the episode number because I just binged the whole thing, but Shingen at one point suggests that rather than rope Celty into a conflict, Izaya should try to center the conflict around Celty herself. Izaya claimed he was doing just that, but I don't think he really succeeded in the initial run. Sure, Celty was involved, but more as an independent third (fourth?) party than as a focal point. She was in the Dollars and friends with both Anri and Mikado, but she didn't really have much of a stake in the squabble itself. That was just a big messy of miscommunication between three high schoolers completely unrelated to her. That must have been frustrating, honestly, getting so close but falling just short of what he needed.

Then, on top of everything else, he wasn't even really involved in the resolution of the fight itself, either. He says in his theory that he needs to create a war only HE can win, right? I'd imagine that's why he was fucking around with a bunch of kids rather than the bigger leagues like the Yakuza that he works with regularly: it's a lot easier to insert yourself as an authority as the only adult. He'd be able to take control of that situation so easily, but Celty took that role instead, so he never even got a chance to win the war.

And to blow off steam from his initial failure, what does he do? He deliberately picks a fight with Shizuo, someone he generally tries to avoid when he can help it, by fucking with his brother's safety.

I wonder if he needed to feel alive for a minute by reminding himself of the loom of death. Shizuo's arguably the only one that actually threatens Izaya enough to feel any sense of awe or dread. I wonder if he wanted to put himself in that position to remind himself what was at stake and give him the motivation to go back to the drawing board and try again. He really does have a Shizuo Complex in that sense.

Anyway, I might do Shou, Ten, and Ketsu individually as I finish them, but if anyone would prefer a liveblog instead, lmk. I might stop at Shou for now, tho, because Wa-kun and I are I thiiiink like halfway through Ten? And I don't wanna spoil them with my rambling.
