WIP Wednesday (8/21) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 215)

“You’re not standing on my shoulders either.”

“Stop joking,” Aaron sighs.

“I’m not. My job requires me to be able-bodied. But I supposed I could help you a pick out a step stool.”

“Will you help me, us, with the kids?” Aaron asks, straight out. No tiptoeing. Andrew considers it for a moment. 

“Oh? I would be allowed near them?”

“Of course you would.” Aaron says, but it sounds more like a question than anything. It almost hurts his feelings. Maybe it would if he had any. Andrew snatches the bags off the counter, ripping one through Aaron’s hand, and stuffs them all into a drawer.

“I will help you paint your junk room. Clean it out, pick a color, and call me.” Andrew says, leaving the other part unanswered. He doesn’t want anything to do with kids. Never has. Even when he was one.

Aaron smiles, apparently satisfied with that. Then he continues to smile and stare until Andrew has to ask, “What?”

“‘Uncle Andrew’,” Aaron says, not holding in a laugh. Andrew balks at such a horrid phrase.

“Absolutely not. They can call me Andrew or nothing at all.”

“We’ll see.” Aaron grins.

“Maybe they’ll get us confused. Maybe they’ll call you Uncle Aaron,” Andrew muses, making Aaron’s signature glare (Andrew thinks it was his first) appear on his face. 

“If you teach my kids to call me—”

“I doubt I’ll be around them enough to teach them anything. Besides, they’re just ‘two little thingies’ right now,” Andrew says mockingly. “Not even close to being born, let alone talking.”

“You’ll be around them plenty.”

“What makes you think I want to be anywhere near a pair of screaming brats anyway?”

Aaron thinks for a minute. “Because they’re mine.”

“And we are so well known for spending time together.” Andrew rolls his eyes.

“We’re doing better.” Aaron counters. And he’s right. They’ve spent more time together— on purpose and not just the forced closeness caused by sharing a cousin, house, and collegiate exy team— in the last month than in their entire lives.

“We’re doing better.” Andrew concedes.

Aaron nods, then wets his lips. “Will you come for Christmas?”

“No. I’m busy that day.”

“Doing what?”
