Chapter 25 - Under Cover, of Identity and Dark
The Angry Swan was a rather disreputable looking inn and Mira grinned, knowing that was likely why Bull had chosen it.  It was the kind of place where one didn't admit to seeing anything, and if they did, they didn't say so.  It reminded her of the tavern where they’d met, so long ago.  Inside the light was murky and the sailors and dockworkers drinking there barely gave her a glance when she walked in.  She searched the taproom and found Bull sitting in a corner, his back and blind side protected by the walls.  He'd seen her come in – a smirk already curled his lips – so she wasted no time crossing the room to him.  In her periphery she saw a barmaid's disappointed glower.  It made her grin.  Some things never changed.
“Hey, babe.”
He gave her one long assessing look, from her hood to her boots.  His smirk grew wider.  “Chestnut.”

Are there any other shipping pairs in your RP group (since you mentioned Galaren) that you have?
Mmm the Dragon Age rp group isn’t really what it used to be. It’s no longer exclusive, and a lot of the blogs are on hiatus right now. A decent amount of relationships did crop up though.
Cullen/Samson was canon for a good while but broke off before Trespasser started because it’s Sullen and no one is allowed to be happy.
When Galaren showed up in the rp he pretty quickly got involved with another OC that had been around for a while named Lasair, but it ended after a short period.
Solas/Fenris was basically canon in regards to reciprocation but never went anywhere (because I was a coward.) That was obvious in their interactions over his poetry and the two painful follow up threads, the shortest of which we call the Six Lines. It still hurts to think about it.
Galaren/Fenris happened in the interim between the time skip, which was made obvious by their passive aggressive poetry and not-really-subtle double meanings in their conversations. In another universe, they are happily together.
Fenris was real on self-sabotage in that rp honestly ahha. ahhahah...
Cassandra/Varric was canon before the Trespasser switch over and I believe it remained but I’m uncertain. They kinda sold me on the ship, at least from the stark “No” that I felt before the rp.
An interpretation of Cullen’s main scout Jim and an OC named James got together, and it was very cute (besides Galaren nearly getting stabbed, which was exciting as shit, but not super cute.)
Hmmm if there are any other ships I don’t really recall them at the moment. The ships weren’t the big reason we started writing with each other, so they weren’t super pivotal. Just tried to let them happen naturally if they did at all. :) That made them all the better and more interesting when they did finally happen.

Ghosts of the Past
a story for @fangrl-esque featuring her bab. A story that got away from me, because this was supposed to just be an awkward meet n' greet. ;-; what is short form [this didn't fit in an ask, so, here. a story]
At least three different beginnings have been crossed out on Galaren's report. The first was too formal, the second not enough, and the third was just awkward. He sat back, looking out at the darkness of he Hinterlands and let the events of the last few days filter through his mind, trying to sort them out.
It seemed that wherever he went, people were blowing up chantries and temples and just Andraste-on-a-stick, this was getting ridiculous.
Tumblr media
He'd joined the fledgling Inquisition right away, and promptly been assigned scouting the Hinterlands along with some enlisted locals. So far the hills were full of Templars and Apostates and bears. He'd quickly learned why Kirkwall had been so full of the damn bear traps, it seemed like the bears bred like rabbits out here.
"Small band approaching from the north," the dwarf on guard duty said over her shoulder. "Inquisition colours."
Galaren shoved the barely-started letter into a pocket and stood, walking over to the edge of camp and squinting into the night.
"Do you think it's reinforcements?" he asked. "That last group of apostates nearly roasted me alive. It'd get better faster if you helped me put the salve on, you know."
Harding looked up at him, arching an eyebrow.
"The fireball barely grazed you," she said, rolling her eyes back to the path below. "And this isn't reinforcements. Well it is, but not regular ones."
Oh? Galaren arched an eyebrow, and spotted a flicker of green light in the distance. The survivor. Not a Herald of some long dead woman, and definitely not the chosen of a god that didn't exist, but he'd seen the unconscious body covered in dust and blood that had been carried into haven after the explosion. He'd been dispatched out here the moment that the breach had steadied and now he was about to get a good look at this so-called Chosen One. He crossed his arms, lips tugging into a smirk.
"It was a woman right?" He asked Harding as he watched the green flicker get closer, revealing a small group of armored people were walking up the path towards the camp. Three could be elves or human, and one was defintely dwarven.
"Varric!" Galaren said, a bit more relief slipping into his voice than he'd planned. He hadn't seen the other man since he'd left to hold back the demons pouring out of the Breach.
"Charmer, whaddya know? Been a while. You've got a lot to catch up on," Varric said, lifting his hand in greetings. "And you won't believe it but I think I finally found someone with worse luck than we do."
Behind varric, a tall and severe looking woman rolled her eyes, passing by to stop and talk to Harding in hushed tones.
"Is this a friend of yours, child of the Stone?" The two others were elves, Galaren saw now. The one who had spoken leaned on his staff, but he didn't wear any of the face tattoos, and he was considerably taller than most elves Galaren had met. Apostate then. The other one...
"Ah the chosen one greets us," Galaren said with a flourishing bow towards the woman. "It is a pleas-"
"Be ready for an hour before sunrise." Her voice was quiet and cold, eyes pale on a paler face that was spattered with freckles and vallaslin. She stepped around Galaren, passing by and headed over to join Cassandra.
Both Varric and the taller elf chuckled. Galaren, however, frowned.
"She doesn't like being called that," Varric said. "Looks like you just got volunteered for Templar hunting in the morning. C'mon, I'll fill you in over food."
***
The hinterlands were always coldest right before Dawn. The frost on grass crunched quietly underfoot as the Herald led the small team of Inquisition fighters forward.
Galaren could have still been asleep, enjoying a lazy morning before his expected shift in the afternoon. But no. He'd woken up to the Herald standing over him, stone faced and hand glowing. He was still bothered that he'd jumped in surprised, even if it had elicited the closest thing to emotion he'd seen on her before or after. A tiny spark of amusement in her eye before she'd told him to gear up.
"hold," the woman in question said. Her mohawk had been braided back, and as the first blush of dawn lit the crest they waited on, Galaren realised her hair was silver, not blonde. Eyes violet, not grey. Weird.
Varric had said something last night about 'maybe you'll get along with this one too', but Gal hadn't been sure about that. Speaking of the dwarf...
"Varric I call three. How many do you think you'll get?" Gal asked, stringing his bow and pulling an arrow from his quiver.
"Oh, normally I'd say four, but there's only six down there," Varric said, pulling Bianca off his back. "And you haven't seen these ladies at work. We'll be lucky if we get even one each."
"Mhn," murmured the Herald. "Try to keep up, Dumarc." Gal blinked, looking over to where the Herald had stood. There was only wisps of smoke left, and the other woman was charging over the crest towards surprised Templars.
"Yeah," Varric said with a chuckle. "You get used to it. Sort of. I think the attitude's related to having white hair."
Galaren watched as the two women carved a bite out of the Templar formation, and let out a low whistle.
"Not bad," he said, loosing his first arrow. It caught a scribe in the foot, pinning the man in place. "You think she'd be able to hold her own against Isa?" The next arrow punched through the pinned man's neck.
"Charmer," Varric said, shaking his head as he lined up Bianca and took out the knee of one of the heavies. "I don't know but I'd pay good coin to watch that fight."
The apostate two out the last two templars with a crash of thunder, lightning frying the unfortnate bastards from the inside out.
"I'll say one thing though," Varric said, shouldering Bianca. "I never told her your name. She knew who you were on her own."
Galaren frowned, looking back down the hill to where the so-called Herald was searching the bodies for anything useful.
"Odd, think she knows Merrill?" He asked. Otherwise how would a Dalish elf know who HE was? He wasn't in most of the stories, he was barely even in Varric's book.
"Maybe Andraste told her," Varric muttered. Galaren laughed, thinking it was a joke. He stopped as he looked over to see Varric was serious.
"You don't think she actually is, Varric, right?" Gal asked.
"You didn't see the Temple close up, Charmer. I did," Varric said. "I saw her walk out of that with only a few cuts and bruises. If it's not real... I want to find out who the hell is able to do that."
The dwarf clapped a hand on Gal's shoulder before picking his way down the slope to where the others waited. The archer stood, watching the pale woman for a moment, curiosity piqued.
He put on his best, most charming smile, and strode downhill.
"Well done!" he said. "That was impressive!"

With the first part of Driftwood - now a series, not a fic - completed, I've started work on Book 2. The Inquisition Era(tm). Mira is now getting into the parts she remembers actually playing, albeit 14 years ago (for her, it's timey wimey, pay it no mind).
---
She chose the mountain path. Approval radiated from Leliana while Cassandra continued to grumble. Mira was nearly at her wit's end with that nonsense. The hike would be long but, if she remembered right, the way would be mostly clear. At least until they reached the top. She took the replenishment of arrows the Nightingale handed her and set off.
“So, Cipher,” Varric said as they climbed. “You got a real name?”
“Mira Foret.”
“Sounds Orlesian.” She scoffed at him. “But you sound like a Marcher. Like me. Well, a bit anyway. There's some...hmm, Nevarran?”
“I've lived a lot of places.”
“Hah! A right little dandelion fluff, eh? Floating all over.”
“Something like that. And you're prying.”
“Just trying to be friendly. Marchers stick together, you know.”
She didn't want to lose the momentum she had going on the incline so she only scoffed again and kept walking. “Not in my experience.”
“Yeah, speaking of that...how does a laysister know how to shoot a bow like a merc?”
Someday I will get you to tell me how you learned such healing techniques. The sweetly gossipy voice of her landlady in Val Royeaux went through her mind and a pang went through her heart. She made her answer to Varric the same as the one she'd given Lady Lucette Dumarc, years ago now.
“I wasn't always a laysister.”
“Fair enough, Dandelion.”

He actually lets out a laugh at that, shaking his head. She really did know how to slink her way under her skin, right there where she should exist. He wanted to keep his arms open to her, wanted to look into her eyes and find a kind of solace between them. Couldn't they live like that? Surely she wouldn't tire of him so easily and he could find a dozen or so other things that could make her stick around. At least that was the part of him that clung to wishful thinking. He had never known someone like her, she was slowly becoming everything to him. Whether or not that made him an absolute fool. "Well, I think that I'll be hoping for that outcome." He grinned a little and then stepped nearer to her. She's beautiful, there's something like a mischievous spark alighting there in her eyes. "How about we make a deal or something?" He offered, leaning towards her so he could brush a kiss to her forehead. "A deal that can include anything because I just know that I'm going to convince you to want to stick around."
