When #BlueNoteRecords announced they were extending their 80th Anniversary Series and re-branding it’s name to “The Classic Series” I looked at the release lineup and saw “Idle Moments” by b#GrantGreen and “Midnight Blue” by #KennyBurrell were being released during the same week my thought was “Brilliant”. Even though I owned a regular #MusicMattersJazz and an SRX Series copy to go along with a Liberty I’ve had in my collection like forever I knew I was purchasing this Classic Series reissue on it’s release. The album was recorded on both November 4 and 15, 1963 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Green on guitar, #JoeHenderson on tenor, #DukePearson on piano, #BobbyHutcherson on vibes, #BobCranshaw on bass and #AlHarewood on drums. As Duke Person wrote in the liner notes that when he “Idle Moments” he envisioned it only lasting no more than the 7 minutes that was left to fill in the remain space of the album. Green’s opening chorus was supposed to be 16-bars, but once he began playing it he went well over the 16-bars. By the time they completed the take it 15 minutes, but it was a masterpiece that they couldn’t get rid of. So they decided to re-do “Django” and shorten it. The only issue I have with this reissue is like all the BN80’s and now the Classics is they come in covers that are made of cheap card stock and the paper sleeves the albums come in are even worst. The love they place in their “Tone Poet Series” and their lessor known titles should be given to these classics as well. Duke Pearson’s haunting and mastefully performed “Cristo Redentor” became a jazz standard.
