okay ck3 pagan saxon campaign update
so i'm nearing the end of my starting character's life. he's an old man in declining health. but he's achieved much. he's raised a very large and influential family and has conquered many lands (which he distributed between his many sons). most of the gains have been northward (into scandinavia) and eastward (we just finished our total conquest of pomerania).
he also controls a colony on the southeastern coast of england (the duchies of kent and essex)
he (my starting character -- named theudis) is the duke of holstein and vassal of prince widukind of saxony. by far the most powerful vassal of saxony, controlling all of pomerania and about a chunk of scandinavia.
early on he married his daughter to the duke of angria so now the current duke of angria is my grandson. hoping to make some strategic marriages to unite the duchy of angria and my duchy of holstein.
theudis is definitely powerful enough to just overthrow the prince of saxony and claim the throne for himself. but i'm big on roleplay and it doesn't seem appropriate. theudis and widukind are best friends. we've accomplished much together!
unfortunately, his eldest son does not share the same love. he is my nemesis for a bunch of reasons i won't get into. needless to say, it makes courtly visits awkward! his eldest son is the duke of uppland. my second eldest son is duke of ostergotland and smaland (also many of my youngest sons have various counties and duchies throughout the rest of sweden and norway). so between the two of them they control a large chunk of sweden.
for decades widukind, the prince of saxony, has also been the king of geatland (theudis won him that title in a great war back in their youths).
and just now we waged one last great war against france....for a single tiny county. but we ultimately prevailed (with the support of our norse allies). and it really was our last war. because...
widukind, my dear friend, just passed away. his eldest son inherited the kingdom of geatland, and thus many of my sons are now vassals to my rival. i am planning on using this to my advantage and i'm hoping to help get one of my sons/grandsons on the throne.
his second son inherited the princedom of saxony. i am his vassal. fortunately, this second son seems to really like me. we are friends. on top of that, for whatever reason, i have been made his regent. and i've been using my powers as regent to strengthen his tribal authority. i must serve the realm and my best friend's son!
but now theudis is getting old and sickly himself. who knows what his sons will do? all we know is that his many sons are set up to make moves in many different parts of northern europe!
i think his eldest son (my next player character) will try to be friendly with the prince of saxony too, instead of trying to claim the throne for himself.
so far have made no progress toward "liberating" frisia. but we'll get there eventually. francia is still a force to be reckoned with.

Prince Gustav of Sweden and Norway, Duke of Uppkingdom of sweden, land. Unknown artist.
He was the second son of Oscar I of Sweden and Josephine of Leuchtenberg. In Sweden, he is remembered for having written a couple of well-known songs. His The Student Song (Studentsången) is traditionally sung at the graduation festivities for gymnasium students, and his Spring Song (Vårsång) is often performed by men's choruses on Walpurgis night. “I wish that Prince Gustav of Sweden (b. 1827) could have lived longer. Most of his musical and artistic work is still practised and famous here in Sweden yet today. And if he’d lived longer I think he would have made a very famous Prince in Europe with a great career in at least Northern Europe. And of course, he was dashingly handsome (in the photos that was actually taken of him during this Victorian time period). I wonder therefore what marriage match he’d made... One could never know but it’s nice to imagine. As a Swede, I find it really fascinating to bring light to our past royalty here in our nation. And since some of Gustav’s work still is practised today, it’s also very important to give him some respect dedicated to his achievements.” - Submitted by lionhearteddame

played some ck2 last night. started as the count of mortain in normandy, william won but then harald won and i had some fun trying to depose him and get william back on the throne. sadly i accidentally left provincial revolt strength set to maximum (which, among other things, caused a norse pagan revival and the pagan duke of uppland to do a prepared invasion of england) and catharism spread to my other county, caen, immediately after which 15,000 of them spawned, sieged down all my holdings, spread catharism to mortain, and then won and deposed me. it's sad that it was an ironman game - i wanted to know how that germanic revival wouldve worked out.

My name and duchy prediction for the new baby boy Bernadotte are:
Prince Oliver Gustaf Oscar, Duke of Uppland
I think they will have him match his brothers and go by Prince and get a duchy even though he is the first of this generation to be born without an HRH.
I chose Oliver because it’s a popular Swedish boy name and seems like it would fit nicely with Alexander and Gabriel. Gustaf because I think they will keep the tradition of having one of the King’s names in the middle name, and I’m thinking they would pick Gustaf over Folke. Oscar because it is Sofia’s dad and one of Bertil’s middle names. Finally, I chose Uppland because that was where Sofia grew up (I believe) before moving to Dalarna at a young age.
I’m notoriously terrible at these sorts of things so if you are placing bets, bet against all of this.

Princess Adrienne’s duchy is really the smallest?
After the announcement of Princess Adrienne’s duchy last Monday, some articles were saying she got the second smallest duchy/province there is in Sweden. Some people also said it was fitting because, after all, she’s 10th in line to the Swedish throne. But others started complaining and saying it was a shitty one.
So, I got to think. Is there really anything related to that fact? Did all the other kids got duchies accordingly to their succession places?
Let me get one thing straight: it’s not a competition of who gets the bigger ones. The King chose them and his children accepted them. I just looked it out of curiosity to see if this argument holds.
So, first things first. Sweden is actually grouped in three parts: Götaland (South), Svealand (Center), Norrland (North). And in those three parts, there are 25 provinces (landskap) that the King decides to ‘give’ to one of his children or grandchildren when they’re born.
I first wanted to know which counties were in each division. In bold there’s the duchies already in use and in italic ones are those which never had a duke or a duchess. So we got:
- Götaland: Blekinge, Bohuslän, Dalsland, Gotland, Halland, Skåne, Småland, Västergötland, Öland and Östergötland. (5 out of 10 duchies in use).
- Svealand: Dalarna, Närke, Södermanland, Uppland, Värmland, Västmanland. (3 out of 6 duchies in use).
- Norrland: Ångermanland, Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Lappland, Medelpad, Norrbotten, Västerbotten. (3 out of 9 duchies in use).
So, I searched and searched for the area and population of each province and the numbers differ from a source to another. I’ll get the one that is closest in numbers to all the others I saw. And since Madeleine has two duchies, I won’t separate them. Our numbers are:
Tumblr media
If we were to rank them for it’s area (which is what’s causing all this conversation), it’d be something like this:
Tumblr media
We can see above that yes, Princess Adrienne got the smallest duchy. But I was surprised to see that neither Crown Princess Victoria or Prince Carl Philip hold the biggest ones, even though Carl Philip  was born Crown Prince. His is bigger than Victoria’s, but way smaller than his son’s. I was also bothered that all the girls are so far down. And we can see that there’s no girl holding bigger duchies than boys. They all got big ones.
Now let’s see if we rank them by population how this list would be?
Tumblr media
was more pleased to see we’ve got the girls a bit more up in the rank than the previous one. And I can’t deny that the King found a way to give Carl Philip’s sons big duchies either in area (for Gabriel) or in population (for Alexander).
And, back to the topic, Princess Adrienne stays in 10th place if we rank her in the succession line, also in 10th place by the size of her duchy, but then she’s a 7th if we rank her by the population of Blekinge. So, I don’t really think people should be calling it a shitty one. It’s fitting at least. Her sister, who was born 5th in line and now is 8th, wasn’t given a bigger duchy back then. The same can’t be said about their brother, though…
It’s also important to note that I only organized them by the number of area and population and didn’t explore it’s economical influence in Sweden’s economy because that’s way too much to search. But each and every county/province has it’s value and it’s richness in culture.
And now, because I had so much fun doing this, let’s compare the other duchies that are left. This will be easier for guessing when they announce another baby for the family (and yes, I’m hoping for at least two more babies). The one underlined belonged to Prince Bertil and Princess Lilian and I don’t believe it’ll be used anytime soon. The bold one belonged to the King when he was just a Prince.
Organized by area:

Organized by population:

So, I hope you guys enjoy reading this. Because I sure enjoyed myself putting it together.

Prince Sigvard of Sweden (1907-2002), Prince Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, Prince of Sweden and Duke of Uppland.
He was a Prince of Sweden from birth, but was excluded from the line of succession in 1934 when he married a woman of unequal rank, a violation of provisions prohibiting marriages between a Prince and a "private man's daughter", in force at the time, contained in both the 1809 Instrument of Government and the 1810 Act of Succession, and, in addition, he lost his princely and ducal titles as decided by the King in Council. As per the king's wishes he was then to be called only Mr. Sigvard Bernadotte in Sweden. In 1951 he was granted Luxembourgian titles of nobility, the interpretation of which remained a point of contention with the Royal Court for the rest of his life, Bernadotte having formally declared in 1983 that his title was Prince Sigvard Bernadotte.
