Yuletide assignments have gone out, and that means all the prompts are now public (ao3 link). If you're me, you just enjoy reading people's prompts and letters, but also, it's a chance to see what people are longing for so you can give treats. Treats are 'extra' fics beyond the normal Yuletide assignment. Anyone can give them even if they didn't sign up for the actual exchange (although unfortunately you won't get a fic in return). Note that there also options for artists to provide treats. I'm definitely eyeing some prompts to see what I might be able to do on that front if I have the time. 👀

6 July 1814
Just some random mentions I found in a German newspaper:
The Duc de Berry was at St.-Cloud on 6 July, then had his regiment of mounted chasseurs manoeuvre in the so-called Trou d'Enfer, and finally held a deer hunt with the Prince of Wagram (Berthier) in the forest of Saint-Germain. [...] Marshal Soult, Duke of Dalmatia, left Paris on 6 July to go to his governorate in Brittany. Marshal Mortier, Duke of Treviso, was also about to leave for his governorate, which included Flanders and Artois.
Nice to see they’re all well.

What Are Pinch Hits?
Sometimes, either because of matching, or because something has happened in the life of the original assigned creator and they had to tell the mods they wouldn't get the gift done, exchanges have assignments that have no creator. That's when they put them up for Pinch Hits, and creators who want to take on an extra challenge on a shorter deadline can volunteer to pick them up. That way everybody still gets a gift.
Fic in a Box is no exception, and we do have Pinch Hits that are looking for creators!
Not everyone can take up 10k of an assignment— and sometimes the original creator was able to cover some of the assignment but not all of it, or had to drop when they only had a swap— so FIAB does pinch hits in 1k-increments. You will see a pinch hit like "PH 8 - 5k - 鹿鼎記 - 金庸 | The Deer and the Cauldron - Louis Cha, 鹿鼎記 | The Duke of Mount Deer (Hong Kong 1984), 老洞 | The Old Miao Myth (Hong Kong 1983), 江湖 | Triad Underworld (2004)", and you click through to get more details, and hmmm, yes, that looks like something you can do, and you think to yourself— well I'm pretty busy right now, but I bet I can do 2k of The Deer and the Cauldron— and you can inform the mods that you'll take 2k, and then the mods will update the post saying that they're just looking for 3k now! Any increment down to 1k and up to 10k is welcome and helpful!
All of the current pinch hits can be found in this tag, on the Dreamwidth blog. If you want to pick one up (or some part of one up), you can either email the mods at [email protected], or you can comment directly on the post the Pinch Hit is listed in. In your comment or email the mods will need to know 1) the amount of wordcount you would like to claim, 2) the exact username of the AO3 account you will be posting your fill(s) from, and 3) an email where the mods can reach you. You don't need to have a dreamwidth account to comment, you can comment anon!
We currently have 18 pinch hits we're still looking for creators for! If you're looking for an extra challenge, check out the post!
More Questions?
If you have questions, feel free to ask them here, check the dreamwidth blog for much more documentation, email the mods, or join our discord server. The discord server has a lot of experienced participants happy to answer questions, and you are also welcome to join just to hang out!

TTEOTM Creative Team: What else did they work on?
For those who are a bit underwhelmed by the summer drama options or still dreaming about TTEOTM! 😎
Kuk Kok Leung (Lead Director)
Kuk Kok Leung is a veteran director who started his career in Hong Kong's TVB. He's been nominated for the prestigious Magnolia Award and is known for wuxia and serious, warm-blooded historical dramas (he's adapted 7 out of 8 Jinyong novels). His works include...
Legend of the Condor Heroes (1983) as Assistant Director, with Felix Wong and Barbara Yung
The Duke of Mount Deer (1984), with Tony Leung & Andy Lau
Return of the Condor Heros (1983) with Andy Lau & Idy Chan
Legend of the Condor Heroes (2002) with Li Yapeng & Zhou Xun
Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (2003), with Hu Jun, Jimmy Lin, and Liu Yifei
Water Margin (2011), nominated for Magnolia Award
Cool Sword (2013), with Julian Cheung & Wallace Chung
The Patriot Fei Yue (2013), with Huang Xiaoming & Ruby Lin
The Stand-In (2014), with Wallace Chung
The General and I (2016), with Wallace Chung and Angelababy
He's also a frequent collaborator and producer on Johnny To films, including Election, Election 2, Mad Detective.
So you get the picture. He makes TV for men who are ready to bleed for their country. This all makes him a really interesting choice for TTEOTM (and tells you a bit about the ambition and creative vision of the producers), especially since all his more recent idol dramas were widely panned.
Wang Haiqi, Director & Action Director
We don't know too much about Wang Haiqi because TTEOTM is actually his directorial debut. He started his career in stunts and has worked as the action coordinator on Ashes of Love (2018) and Immortality (unreleased) alongside Luo Yunxi. He was also a stunts man/double in a bunch of Hollywood films, including Mulan (2020) and the Foreigner (2017) through the Jacky Chan stunts team.
He's responsible for most of the action/battle scenes in TTEOTM, and his experience working on films probably explains why the fight sequences are unusually cinematic for TV.
Luan Hexin, Art Director
Luan Hexin is a Magnolia Award nominated art director best known for Huanyu productions, including Story of Yanxi Palace, Winter Begonia, and Royal Feast. He's a serious art guy, as you can tell from this interview.
(Note: Huanyu is Bai Lu's management company. There is a rumor that Luan Hexin is part of Bai Lu's "dowry", but the parties have since clarified that Luan was brought in after she was cast.)
He's also an interesting choice, having never worked on costume fantasies before and better known for his authentic representation of the look and feel of bygone eras.
Huang Wei, Costume Designer
Huang Wei is one of the most sought-after costume designers working today, especially for xianxias. She started her career as a Vogue China editor and was in fact the person responsible for TTEOTM's Dunhuang-inspired aesthetics.
Her better known works include A Dream of Splendor (2022), One and Only (2020), Love O2O (2015), Back from the Brink (2023) as well as a bunch of highly anticipated dramas like Immortality and The Last Immortal. (The joke on Chinese internet is that there is an "expensive" vs. "cheap" version of Huang Wei costumes - her design can be much simpler on lower-budget productions.)
I'd like to think that after designing 40 mostly white costumes for Luo Yunxi in Immortality, she decided to go nuts on color with Tantai Jin.
Tsang Ming Fai, Makeup Designer
Tsang Ming Fai is a big name in the xianxia circuit. He and his team of “students" have worked on a large number of costume dramas, including Ashes of Love (2018), Love & Redemption (2020), Under the Power (2019), Noble Aspirations (2016), Sword of Legends (2014), as well as the... wait for it... unreleased Immortality and Luo Yunxi's currently filming drama Follow Your Heart.
He's sadly been receiving a lot of hate in fan circles over the heavy makeup in TTEOTM (which may or may not have been his call). What I do appreciate is his ability to help actors craft distinct characters with varied hair and makeup choices. For example you can distinguish between different Luo Yunxi characters and their personalities with Runyu's clean cut tie-back half ponytail (ethereal & straight laced), Tantai Jin's slightly brown hair, messy bangs and heavy eye shadow (dark & sickly), Chu Wanning's angular eyebrows and geometric hair puff (strict & proud).
He also excels at creating unusual, iconic looks even for side characters, e.g. Chen Yao's dark lipstick paired with gothic jewelry in Immortality and Chen Duling's retro updo in TTEOTM.

What about his novels? Is there a way to read those in english? I heard there's multiple versions of the same novels for some reason if I could I would at least love to read them
Hi Nonny!
So! I know that a number of his novels have official English translations, and though I find some of it mildly dubious (some of these are pretty old translations so they retain some of the uh, old timey vibe of Chinese to English translations that I can only best describe as "antiquated") -- iirc these would be Legend of the Condor Heroes, The Book and the Sword, Sword Stained With Royal Blood, and Duke of Mount Deer -- I would say to check those out first.
I think @inappropriatewenning has read/has been reading the official LOCH translation so they might be a good person to ask on how they liked it!
As for why there are multiple versions, this is an easier answer: originally all of Jin Yong's works were released serialized in either Ming Pao, or Hong Kong Commercial Daily (and some other newspapers at the time). These serialized versions were commonly known as "First Edition/Old Edition/Serialized Edition" versions of the novels.
Then after publication of most of his works, between 1970-1980 Jin Yong revised the First Editions of the novels to achieve better flow, and some events were changed, creating the "New Edition/Second Edition" of the novels.
Then from 1999-2006, Jin Yong revised each of the novels again, creating the "Third Edition/New Millennium Edition" which responded to criticism regarding historical accuracy and other minor timeline inconsistencies, adjusted storylines for characters, changed the names of certain techniques, etc.
I would say that the Second Edition remains the most popular and enduring "version" of the stories, and if you talk with older Jin Yong fans they're likely to agree with this idea. Most of the adaptations that exist in the world today are based on the Second Edition of the novels as well.
(I also have....links to underground fantranslation versions of the novels if you'd enjoy that, though the grammatical qualities are a bit rough for a lot of those. It used to be that on the old wuxia forums in its heyday we had translations of his novels in other languages besides Chinese and English as well, but forum life in fandom has really died out and I don't know if there's still online repositories for such work that was put in...it might be better to seek out older wuxia fandom spaces in those languages to see if there's any hope of recovering them. iirc Thai translations and Korean translations are also very popular.)

Hang out
duke x bestie reader
You and Duke have been close since a young age.It was to the point that y'all were mistaken as siblings. But after the incident with the joker and his parents he went totally M.I.A only for you to see him on the tv with bruce wayne.Lets just say you were rightfully pissed and he now owes you for disappearing and not relying on you as emotional support from his parent’s death.(and totally not because you went to the wayne manor, threatening his existence, then attacking him when given the chance. And then totally not threatening him to take you out on his dime. All while in front of the wayne family. You were never one for first impressions anyway.)After the whole fiasco and the dust started to settle y’all went out.Not only for your enjoyment but so Duke can have a sense of normality into his life.
The Zoo
He had picked you up from your apartment to head to the zoo because you kept talking about a new exhibit.Once arrival you dragged him towards the new exhibit.
“I don’t think it's supposed to look like that…”
“What do you mean?It looks fine to me.”
“I don’t think snakes are supposed to have popping out gumball eyes that are really cross eyed.”
As y’alls head tilted looking through the glass at the derpy looking snake watching it blink its eyes slowly at separate times.Duke became physically repulsed at the action.
“That's gross!”
“You don’t have a taste for the nice things in life.”
“We really need to talk about your taste in general.”
Y’alls attention was grasped when the back door of the exhibit opened letting a rat in.Next thing that happened was the snake quickly grabbed the rat in its mouth eating it whole.Soon both of your faces riddled with disgust.
“Your right I really don’t have taste,I think i wanna leave now”
“At least you admitted it this time.”
Y’all walked away with a sense of violation at what y’all saw.
The Library
After the zoo fiasco you decide to head to the library.Nothing can go wrong at the library. You just want to buy some new books that came in.
“Ok I'll call you guys up here to pay once I collect all the books you wanted from the back.”
The librarian said as she wandered to the back.Ya’ll headed to a table as he sat on his phone as you readed a recent magazine.
“Hey Duke.”
“Hmm”
“Your kids want a dog. Your husband wants a dog.But you hate dogs. To compromise do you?A. Get a dog.B. Get an angry, but friendly, rabbit.C. Mount a deer head above your bed and sleep more.D. Study for your doctorate in philosophy.”
“What?”
“Just answer the question”
“Kinda hard to answer when I like dogs”
“Just answer or i'll hit you”
“Well I suppose I have to answer if you're threatening me.I’ll pick A and just find a way to cope.”
“Boring.”
“What would you pick then?”
“D so i can slowly terrorize them on why you shouldn’t get a dog.If that doesn’t work just throw them all away.”
“In your world it really is your way or the highway huh.”
As y'all laughed you slowly heard noise.Quickly you stopped laughing and looked around the area.Duke picking up on your silence noticed the noise too. After a moment y’all looked at eachother fixing to shrug it off seeing as it went quiet.
Next think you know you hear the loudest moan and sex noises that followed throughout the library.Yall quickly got up and exited the library passing by the librarian that came back with your book orders.
“Wait, what about your books!!”
“Just mail it,I'll pay online!!”
Your Apartment
By now it had gone dark out and you guys decided to have a sleepover movie night. You changed into the batman logo pants and forced him to wear the hello kitty pants with a top of y'all choice.Duke instied on picking a movie(no doubt a horror) while you got the facemasks,Nails supplies, and takeout with small snacks.
“Don’t move your hands, you're going to mess up the nail polish.”
“But i'm hungry”
“Calm down, it's almost dry.Jeez you're more dramatic than me.”
“*sigh* Then can I take off the face mask? I already hit my quota for the amount of photos you took.”
“Fine.Hold still while I do it.”
“Ow!That hurt woman!”
“Calm down you tiddy baby.I’m almost done peeling it off.”
“Why me”
“Stop talking shit.”
“But i was-nevermind…”
After you painfully pulled off the mask yall sat to watch the movie. You decided to take pity on him and hand fed him(totally not because you hate horror movies)despite it making a mess.
Soon y'all heard a disturbance outside. Not to surprising seeing as you live in Gotham. You both get up from the couch to open the window to look at the commotion. You see Green Ivy pass by your window causing destruction again for world peace or something. With Batman and Robin following close after. You face showed a blank expression as you closed the window, dragging Duke back to the couch to continue y’alls hang out.

Do you know of any Kangxi era shows that are made with okay quality and look like they are from this century not the previous one? 😅
Scarlet Heart/Bu Bu Jing Xin (tag) and the first Palace series (tag) are both set in the Kangxi era (Palace is a plagiarised copy of BBJX but that's another story). They were both made in the early 2010s and the quality stands up (well...not Palace's neon aesthetics).
@renewedmotionforjudgment has a post recently-ish talking about her favourite dramas that include both BBJX and Palace? I think? I can't find it anymore?
A more recent Kangxi era drama is Legend of the Dragon Pearl (tag).
Blooming Days I think was originally supposed to be set in the Kangxi era but then they ditched that historical background.
Any adaptation of The Duke of Mount Deer/The Deer and the Cauldron (Lu Ding Ji) by Jin Yong would be Kangxi era, but I think the last adaptation of that available is from 2000. I don't think this blog even has a tag for this drama....

Birthday Gangbang
My perfect birthday bash embodies nothing short of this:
The first filter question shall be a simple one: Are you willing to ponder and accept the risk of whether you will still be alive after encountering the next fence?
Those who fall off the horse, come in fluffers.
I came across an article in the Figaro Magazine all about the practice of fox hunting. Like in England, the sport in France dates back centuries, a highly ritualistic pastime generally relegated to the higher classes of society. The most poignant difference between hunting in the two neighboring countries, however, is that in France people hunt on foot much more than they hunt on horseback with a pack of hounds. But that certainly doesn’t diminish the sport’s traditions and inherited practices as compared to fox hunting on horse (la vènerie or la chasse à courre in French).
In fact, the practice of fox hunting on horseback has a long history in France. The French kings were all capable hunters and our last king, Louis XVI, was a fanatic foxhunter right up until he was imprisoned and beheaded during the Revolution. Since then, the sport in its horseback form has kept its exclusivity as an aristocratic hobby and is generally thought of by the French as ‘English hunting’. But even still, today over 420 groups of foxhunters à courre hunt in 69 of the French departmental regions. The French hunt fox, boar, hares, rabbits as well as deer. And rather than a law forbidding hunting wild animals, as there is in England, a strictly followed Ethic of Hunting including Rules of the Art of Hunting is passed down through the generations.
The article I read in the Figaro highlighted the English hunting group of the Duke of Beaufort, apparently one of the oldest and most prestigious aristocratic families in England. Interestingly, this family got their name ‘Beaufort’ from a château in Champagne, France, making the Beauforts the only present Dukedom to have their namesake a place outside of the UK. And can’t you just picture it – the Duke up on his elegant beast, an army of volunteers (long gone are the days of house servants) clad in Wellington boots and red vests serving whiskey, hot wine or Port on silver platters.
On the property surrounding the Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort’s homestead, where the sport of the same name was apparently founded (who knew?!), two-hundred horsemen and women mount their hunters up to four times a week surrounded by a hyper pack of 35 foxhounds.
The 2004 law regarding fox hunting passed in England under Tony Blair restricts the sport to chasing a sack smothered with the odour of a fox rather than a live animal, a relief to those of us in the fox’s corner.
In England, the fox being hunted is nicknamed Charlie and this clever beast is not without friends. Members of the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) hid out in the bushes with their telescope lens and snap the evidence they need to condemn the hunters under the law. Apparently, since the law was passed less than 10 censures were handed down by the courts. According to the Duke of Beaufort, many of these were a case of mistaken identity. His foxhounds, he insists, are a highly cultivated race with direct lineage back to 1743, over 25 generations. So they are bred to hunt and if they smell a real fox in the area as well as the scented sack, it is possible that they may veer off course.
In his autobiography, Tony Blair lamented that it was an error to champion the law against fox hunting in England. Either way, I think its best that people who inherit the tradition of hunting in their family are able to continue it in a way that removes the violent end Charlies met in the days of Downton Abbey.

What’s really hilarious and off-putting is that Hong Kong TV dramas from the 80s and 90s would just use Joe Hisaishi’s songs in one scene then you never hear it again and start to question your own sanity.
#so far I've heard Laputa in Legend of the Condor Heroes#Nausicaa Valley of the Wind in Duke of Mount Deer#and Princess Mononoke in this one show my mom is watching right now
