so i recently wrote a meta about autism positivity in ducktales 2017's astro boyd, but here's one about the split sword of swanstantine

it's a lot briefer than astro boyd, where almost the entire episode focuses on it, but i think that huey's repressed "duke of making a mess of things" and how he has to come to terms with that side of himself to save the day works really well for that too.

in order to get through life in a neurotypical world, a lot of autistics repress a lot of their emotions and physical reactions and stims and verbalizations etc etc etc. and especially as kids, when they haven't figured out how much "misbehavior" or showing of emotions is acceptable, the kids who become Perfect TM are repressing... all the fucking time. because they can't let themselves Feel TM and have the minor reactions and then sometimes it leads to meltdowns, but a lot of times it just leads to. more repressing.

so even though "the duke of making a mess of things" isn't explored a whole lot beyond the emotions to our primary huey's logic and he just solves a singular situation, we can still see that huey is better off letting this side of himself out more. he can't just ignore his needs and different solutions to problems and just logic his way out of it. he has emotions and needs just like anyone else and acknowledging those and working through them helps him rather than hurts him.

he gains mad respect from lena and learns a lot about himself in the process. idk it's just good

Della/Launchpad Ship Meta

I feel like people should talk about the things they like more often, especially when it comes to ships. Meta isn't very common anymore and shipping manifestos - essays written by fans talking about why they love the ship that they do - appear to be a dead practice.

I wrote this short mini essay for the Delpad Fan Club here on Tumblr and later posted it on AO3. I may write more in the future. As for other places with Delpad meta, you can check out Kirbtaro's fanblog which contains all of her Delpad meta over the years.

If you disagree, that's okay! All I ask is that you be respectful and read with an open mind. This is fandom, after all. The whole point is to play with possibilities in a fan space!

Simply put, these two have so much to learn from each other and, in many ways, are the only two who can help one another. You can try to put other characters in their place, but it won't work.

One of Launchpad's greatest insecurities is rooted in how he isn't a traditionally taught pilot. A lot of his skills come from learning on the (ahem) fly. Della is traditionally taught and works hard to be the best at everything. The idea that she could fail and fail hard upsets her.

Her greatest source of trauma is when she crashed on the moon - due to her own folly. She may have the practical skills to land a plane, but when pushed into an emergency situation, she didn't know how to handle an emergency crash. To Launchpad, this would be second nature to him.

While the show does have Della teaching him how to land a plane and Launchpad teaching her how to crash properly, I feel like the show didn't really delve into what a big deal this is for both of them. The two of them are healing their deepest sources of trauma through the others' skillsets. It would have been fun to see the two of them acknowledge that.

If Launchpad had taught Della how to safely crash from before, she wouldn't have lost her leg. If Della taught Launchpad how to properly land a plane, it would help him overcome his fears of not being good enough.

Launchpad admires anyone who can get back up from their setbacks and Della Duck is firm in her belief that nothing can stop her! The things that LP loves about the Sunchaser (when he was chatting with Beakley in Last Crash) are the same exact qualities that Scrooge compliments Della on when he sees her leg.

While the show may never directly acknowledge it, the two need each other to become the people they most desire to be - to be their most complete selves. Launchpad is an outsider to the family but desperately wants to be a part of it. Della is a part of the family but, due to her past, feels like an outsider. If these two work together, maybe they can find a solution that makes both of their wishes come true.

And, well, wouldn't that fit the theme of found family? Webby is also an outsider who longs to be part of the McDucks and her reward is to be Scrooge's protege - the successor to his fortune. Launchpad's feelings as an outsider of the McDucks never really changes - his consolation is that he has to find a new family for himself. Which never sat right with me - surely he can have the Mallards and the McDuck/Duck family as his families at the same time? The show outright states that he continues to work for both Scrooge & DW at the same time after Let's Get Dangerous.

If Launchpad were to, say, marry Della, he'd get to be an official member of Scrooge's family, just as he's always wanted. He'd essentially be Scrooge's son-in-law (or, well, nephew in law). Kinda like how being Scrooge's daughter allows Webby to be the "fourth nephew" - which is what Webby has always wanted.

You make great art!

Your opinions on Vi’s alternate designs?

I could stare at her all day. Perfection.

Design wise? Her final one is (chef's kiss) SUCH a good balance of showing and contrasting Violet’s personality.

And the alternates show why!

She’s a nerd. Shorthand for that is usually glasses, as seen in almost all her alternative designs. (Think Velma from Scooby Doo.) Not a bad trope.

But at the same time, does her character need a visual short hand for smartness?

Just the way Violet SPEAKS tells you she’s a nerd. She uses big words, and calls people by their full names. When we first meet her it’s in a LIBRARY and her and Webby instantly start switching between various ancient languages.

We don’t need glasses to know she smart and a nerd.

So unless the show is willing to commit to some moments or gags where Violet loses her glasses / takes them off specifically not to see something / cleans them regularly as a character tick (think Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Conservation of Character Design says get rid of them.

Which the show creators did.

(also her introduction scene includes Quackfaster, and I appreciate that, instead of them both wearing glasses- a thing that isn't actually about smartness literally it's just wanting to be able to see- the thing Violet shares with the Terrifying Librarian is... hair tie / hair band, including the color thereof.)

(It's a more personal choice. And it's message is "Practical")

Next is clothing style. Most of her alternates have a more fancy, ‘outfit’ kinda look to them. Like this is something she put together to get a specific Look. Nothing wrong with that. Nerds can be fashionable (Ellie Woods queen thereof).

But… there isn’t anything in Violet’s personality, story, or situation that connects to that idea.

Her things are Books, Learning, Forbidden Magics, Honorable Conduct in Contests and Duels, Adopting Stray Shadow Teens Off The Street As Her New Sister, Brining Pie To A Sleepover, Smacking Invading Moon People With A Spiked Mace, and Using Tibetan Breathing Techniques To Survive Eating Three Bowls Of Deadly Hot Spices In A Row.

The closest she gets to caring about her appearance is when her and Webby (and then her and Lena) put on gruesome costume make up and prosthetics for fun.

So a snazzy outfit, while cool, doesn’t really… jive with the vibe of Violet Sabrewing.

Nerd clothes, like a vest, isn’t needed the same reason glasses aren’t. Also the details would be a pain to draw over and over again. Even Webby’s clothes don’t have that much little bits in them.

High collars again look cool… but Lena’s already got that covered. Stand them next to each other, and where’s the contrast?

Violet wouldn’t “pop” next to Lena if they had that on top of Violet’s dark color scheme and Lena’s dark sweater.

Wearing the same thing (to show characters are connected to each other) works best when either the color or the style DOES contrast sharply

(Huey Louie Dewy and May June wearing basically the same thing as their siblings, but in very different colors)

(side note I’ll make a separate thing for someday: Lena and Webby with button down collar shirts worn under something, but with different style, effect, and colors)

The leggings are seen on two of Violets alternates and I think that got picked for Meta Simplicity and also In-Character Practicality.

They’re athletic, the kind of thing that isn’t at risk of snagging on stuff (befitting an eventual Senior Junior Woodchuck), and the dark color balances out with her hair. And they’re VERY easy to draw. Very good!

Sweater.

Sweater with turtle neck (unless it’s one of those very loose ones) usually gets used as shorthand for “Comfort over Appearance” (Velma again, contrasting Daphne)

And in this case it’s a contrast with Lena who LOOKS like she doesn’t care at first glance but actually has put maybe the most effort into her outfit (sweater stolen from favorite band, dyed her hair, wears bright colored converse in a world where most people go bare foot)

and Webby, who is wearing basically a uniform (picked by her Granny or by herself while daydreaming of experiencing Normal School Things???)

So to balance out Lena’s rebel teen punk look, and Webby’s prim and proper look, Violet has a comfort and practicality look.

BUT!

They kept the eyeshadow.

A VERY GOOD MOVE.

See, eyeshadow on someone who wears an ‘outfit’ (Lena, Daisy) says fashion minded and image conscious.

(this includes Beakly the former spy taking up the role of grandmother).

Eyeshadow on someone who wears a non-snazzy turtle neck and legging with her hair tied away from her face in a simple ponytail says something else completely-

It says, Violet likes eyeshadow, and that is the ONLY reason she wears it.

Either she doesn’t notice that it’s unusual to do this, or she doesn’t care.  

THAT is showing her personality.

If it’s that she doesn’t know it’s unusual, then that fits with her in the Woodchuck Challenge not knowing about smack talk until Lena teaches her, and in Friendship Hates Magic brining a pie to a sleepover, and in The Split Sword of Swanstantine wondering in the middle of a fight if she should change in to more occasion appropriate clothes instead of, you know, running.

Smart yes, savvy to social norms? Not so much.

If it’s that she doesn’t care, then that fits with her direct and blunt way of getting what she wants out of situations, never mind others' objections-

-Instantly running to Webby’s loft so she can see the picture of the demon lord and confirm the crookedness of his fang, repeatedly pressing for using the runes to try contacting the shadow realm despite Webby’s nervous boggle deflections, happily employing smack talk so she can learn it properly without stopping to ask what it’s effect on her competitor might be..

So the clothes of her final design all work really, REALLY well telling new parts of Violet’s personality, without just repeating what we’d instantly know from listening to her talk for half a minute.

Hair.

One of her alternates has loose floofy hair, which I imagine is what canon her would look like without the hair tie, and it rocks.

But the hair tie is kinda important.

Violet isn’t a book nerd who never leaves the library- She’s active, she gets in the thick of things, she’s happy to jump in a fight, and she’s a Junior Woodchuck. Practicality, again, makes more sense. Keeping her hair out of her face works with her character.

Her little flop of bangs is really fun to me too because… well…. It reminds me of Lena.  

Again, it’s different enough to pop while the two stand together, but it’s there. Lena has flopped bang thing. Violet has a curly bang thing. They are sisters. It’s cute!

Also helps her silhouette stand out more against Webby and Lena, who’s hair is pretty smooth and down in general. Gives her this sharp thing that moves around and makes her extra easy to pick out, even when you just see part of her head. Important for a main side-character.

If you're going to add detail, add it to the silhouette -> very big visual payoff.

Colors! COLORS!!!!

Already mentioned the pants balancing her hair nicely, dark on top, dark below, but then there’s her eyeshadow and sweater!

They ALSO tie her with Lena!!!!

Lena’s shirt, hidden under her sweater, is pale blue- the same color her friendship magic is later- it’s the color of Lena being happy and being connected to people.

And Violet’s eyeshadow, is also blue? And Lena’s eyeshadow is purple! Like Violet!

Eyeshadow! That thing both her and Lena wear, them the Sabrewing Sisters, but Webby doesn’t!

That’s so cool! That’s a way to show a connection between them AND their personal tastes, before they even become family! And once they ARE family it helps them visually LOOK like one!

Also, Violet’s green sweater?

Again we’ve got the color contrast compliment thing (huey red dewy blue louie green) this time with Team Magic: Webby pink, Lena blue, Violet green. It helps them feel… individual in scenes they’re all in frame together, while also making them look good next to each other.

The choice of all of team magic’s colors to be either more pastel or duller than the Primary Colors Trio also lets all six of them work together visually, like in Nightmare on Killmoter Hill.

But again, LENA.

Lena has two other bright colors tucked into her design, aside from her pale blue.  

The pink in her hair (visual cue to Webby) and her lime green shoes. Green. GREEN. It’s enough of an important color for it to ALSO be in her friendship bracelet.

And it’s the main color Violet, her adopted little sister, wears.

Oh my heart….

Finally, it’s looks like they tested out ideas of Violet being some kind of, parrot maybe, or wren, or such.

I love her being a humming bird for one very queer reason.

Female violet sabrewing humming birds are actually green, not purple.

And Violet.

Is purple.

Just like her dads.

So on the whole, looking at the designs Violet could have had, I guess I’d say they’d make nice occasional outfits for her...

but if you’re going to make her an important supporting member of the cast and if you have to draw her over and over again, almost always with the same other two characters… and if those characters are Webby and Lena...

Then they picked exactly the right design to go with <3

Yee-ahhh, this is from 5 years ago, but as I’m semi-binging the “new” DuckTales for either episodes I missed or haven’t seen since Disney XD left my cable channels…

Now I’m remembering how much epic nostalgic goodness and beautiful deep cut references there was in this series. Exhibit A, the ultra-meta clip as seen above where Darkwing Duck becomes part of the DuckTales ‘verse.

So would you say you're glad Quackerjack ended up different in the series than Tad Stones originally envisioned him?

I am absolutely happy that Quackerjack turned out totally different than what Tad Stones wanted him to be.

I mean full respect to Tad Stones, but I don’t think having QuackerJack’s personality be more like The Joker’s would have been that great of a choice.

You see, while he does have his more serious moments, Quackerjack is more so the goofy/“whatever happens, happens” type of character. And I love that about him.

And he kinda explains his own personality in the episode, “The Haunting of Mr Banana Brain” where he says to the possessed Mr Banana Brain/Paddywhack: “But Mr Banana Brain, you know Darkwing Duck always ruins things. It’s no big deal, it’s just part of the game.”.

By this quote Quackerjack tells us that to him what he does is just a fun game. He does actively try to succeed in whatever he does, he’ll even gets upset if he doesn’t win, but at the end of the day it’s just a game. And that is what I love about Quackerjack so much. He’s all about fun, it’s not that serious to him, even if the fun is a little harmful.

If Quackerjack had been what Tad Stones originally envisioned him to be like, I honestly don’t think he would have been anywhere near a favorite character of mine.

So yes. I am thrilled that Quackerjack’s personality got changed.

The Ducks Would Love Hamilton

In honour of me seeing Hamilton live tomorrow (!!!) here's some things a friend and I discussed last night about the DuckTales characters enjoying Hamilton.

• Fenton had a slight existential crisis when he was lucky enough to go to a show with the OG Broadway cast, because how in the hell does the guy playing Hamilton sound exactly like him (ooh, how very meta)

• Dewey's the first to discover Hamilton out of the family, and he does not shut up about it. Eventually everyone listens to the album, and while most of them seem to enjoy it, Dewey, Della and Webby are by far the most obsessed. Donald is not a fan, but gets dragged into the whole thing anyways.

• The kids use their dart guns for fake duels in the hallways. Scrooge not only allows this but encourages them (and also turns around so he can have deniability).

• Donald keeps getting woken up early by Della trying to learn the fast part of Guns And Ships. It takes her a while but she eventually gets there. 

• The next time Goldie comes over, someone (probably either Louie or Della) starts playing Say No To This over a Bluetooth speaker. Goldie, having never even heard of Hamilton before, is confused af, while Scrooge is blushing redder than his jacket.

• ^^ Because yes, as much as he hates admitting it, even Scrooge loves Hamilton. For starters, he's always admired the theatre (my hc is that he's a huge Shakespeare nerd since his youth). He also finds Hamilton's whole "determined immigrant" thing wildly relatable, and he also writes like he's running out of time. His favourite song is Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down) because y'know. Victory and all that.

• When it's announced that Hamilton is coming to Duckburg, everyone (understandably) flips out. Scrooge anticipates this, and buys tickets super early to guarantee the family gets good seats. It goes... Well, about the way you'd expect a night at the theatre with the Ducks to go.

• Everyone dresses to the absolute nines, even though it's not a particularly fancy venue - it's a big night for them all. Dewey, Della and Webby are actually in full cosplay, while Scrooge, Beakley, Huey, Louie, Launchpad and Donald (who was all but dragged there) are in fairly regular formalwear (the latter two are more along the lines of "business casual" but still).

• Everyone tries to keep a lid on their excitement so they don't get in trouble for singing along, and it kind of works.

• In the end, it's actually Scrooge that's the first to draw unwanted attention, for booing when King George enters to singYou'll Be Back. Something, something, historical hatred of the English monarchy runs deep for Clan McDuck.

• Because they don't wanna get kicked out of the Coolest Musical Ever To Exist (Webby's words), everyone just lip-syncs to the songs. This is exactly what I'm gonna be doing when I go, by the way.

• Webby cries during That Would Be Enough. Della cries in Dear Theodosia and Stay Alive Reprise (Donald even sheds a few tears during those songs, but he'll never admit it.) Everyone ends up a little emotional in Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story. 

• The car ride there (and back) was spent belting out the songs because they knew they couldn't in the theatre. Donald brought his headphones and sits in the back, resolutely listening to Nirvana or something. Am I adding this to the ever-lengthening list of fic ideas? Yeah. Is that a guarantee I'm actually gonna write it? Nope.

Variety Interviews Ayo Davis, Meredith Roberts And Emily Hart On Disney Television Animation's 40th Anniversary And What To Expect On From The Past, Present And Future

40 years ago, Disney TVA was founded on the heels of challenging outcomes with features “The Fox and the Hound” and “The Black Cauldron.”

Initially, Disney TVA was restricted from using established Disney legacy characters, but nevertheless had huge successes with new shows like “The Wuzzles” and “Adventures of the Gummi Bears,” both of which became popular in syndication. As time went on, DTVA was able to use its limited rights to create shows like “DuckTales” and “TaleSpin,” which featured Disney characters. Today, the slate has evolved to include shows that travel across Disney’s streaming, linear and digital platforms, including Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney Junior and the Disney Parks

Over the 40 years of the studio has collaborated with Walt Disney Imagineering to bring beloved Disney Afternoon characters to the parks as well Mickey And Minnie's Runaway Railway and AquaMouse for the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure cruises from the Disney Cruise & Ships Line as well collaborating with Disney Yellow Two Shoes Team to redesing some heritage characters for the WDW Passholder Magnets.

Disney TVA characters also have gone to the realm of live action. In 2019 Disney Channel brought Kim Possible to the live action world as a Disney Channel Original Movie in 2019. In Spring 2022, Walt Disney Studios brought Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers to a new generation of fans trought a meta-driven live action/animated hybrid film which won an Primetime Emmy Award for Best Feature Film.

In April 2024, it was announced that Kiara from The Lion King II: Simba's Pride created at Disney TVA will make her live action debut on the motion capture/computer animated film "Mufasa The Lion King" with the character being voiced by Blue Ivy Carter. In Fall 2023, it was announced that Blumhouse Television and Atomic Monster where developing a live action reboot of Gargoyles for Disney+.

The future of the studio looks bright as the studio is slated to debut it's 100th show overall "StuGo" in 2025, as well new interations of beloved classics like The Proud Family, Phineas And Ferb, Sofia The First and Darkwing Duck trought revivals,reboots and spin-offs in the coming years with early talks of new interations of TaleSpin, Kim Possible and Recess since Early 2023.

“We have a wildly diverse development slate because we don’t have a house style,” says Meredith Roberts, executive vice president, television animation, Disney Branded Television and CEO of Disney Television Animation “Our styles are creator-driven, so that allows for real support of the artist or creator to fulfill his or her vision. Anything is possible, whether it's CGI. (“Monsters at Work”), hand-drawn 2D (“Big City Greens”,"Primos","Hailey's On It!"), rig-based 2D (“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”,"Kiff") and stop-motion (“Mickey Saves Christmas”,"Rhona Who Lives By The River".). Roberts continues, “We really try and solve all the problems and develop it. We look at the scripts and the story arcs. Every project has to have a strategy behind it that will complement the slate and separate it from other things. Each project has a distinct swim lane to attract an audience. And we’ve learned to meet the kids where they are, in terms of streaming and YouTube.”

Co-viewing, the viewership that happens when adults sit down to watch a DTVA show with the kids in their lives, is part of the studio’s secret sauce and long-term strategy. Many of the shows are written with jokes and plot points for both audiences so both groups will return.

“We double down on the kids and family space,” says Roberts. “We’re not just dipping a toe in the water. We’re diving in. I think we’ve seen a lot of churn with the competition, who just don’t have the patience to develop and are for this audience, which is a very specialized kid audience and co-view audience.” ("The Witchverse", "Rhona Who Lives By The River","InterCats","Fantasy Sports") Roberts reflects: “I think one of the things I’m most proud of is how stable Disney TVA has been for the last 40 years despite a lot of outside churn of the animation industry. Many of our crews feel that Disney is their forever home. I think the excitement they have to illustrate and create with this brand has been terrific because it’s harder to be funny and clean. And nowhere are we tearing down people to get that laugh. I think that’s the beauty of a Disney animated show.”

DTVA also sought to meet kids where they are by making their audience — which is made up of the most diverse generation in history — feel seen, with series such as “Elena of Avalor,” which featured Disney’s first Latina princess, and “The Proud Family,” franchise focused on the life of a teenage Black girl.

“We do have an amazing insights team that are constantly in the field, giving us general information about how kids are watching content, what they’re into,” Emily Hart (VP of Current and Development - Disney Junior) says. “Some of those things are evolving, as we know the ways kids consume content is changing. But there are some universal truths about kids, and it’s great to have that reinforced. Kids still like a lot of the same things that we like. So, there’s a combination that we’re always tracking with every new idea, and we do pilot testing. We get to sit down and talk about the content, and we invite our creators in so they can see the kids talking about it because they’re the audience and they’re the truest test of if the story is going to work.”

Ayo Davis, president of the Disney Branded Television and VP of Current and Development at Disney Television Animation says the division is a “driving force” for memorable kids and family entertainment.

“All of us at Disney Branded Television are so proud of the studio’s 40-year legacy as it continues to entertain future generations with shows like ‘Kiff,’ ‘Big City Greens’ and ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 2.0" --- Davis says.

Those creators who come to DTVA often stay for a long time, partnering with the studio on a variety of different projects or expanding on a hit and reimagining it for the next generation of viewers. “The Proud Family” was a standout in 2001 on Disney Channel. Creator and executive producer Bruce W. Smith is now working on the Emmy-winning “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” which is based on the original series. The show follows Penny Proud as she navigates family life and her own childhood.

“Being at Disney TVA has allowed me to realize all my artistic dreams,” says Bruce W. Smith. “As a kid, you always have hopes, thoughts, dreams, ideas and characters that can help lay out those ideas in your head. Disney has allowed me to really tap into my creative instinct, at the end of the day, you have to learn how to trust yourself. Meredith Roberts has been a true shepherd for me in all of this, allowing me to stretch my wings. Because of her belief in me and my ideas, she’s really allowed me to blossom as an artist. All that happened at DTVA.”

“They really seem to be a place that welcomes your ideas,” Dan Povenmire says of Disney TVA. “They want to find people with real strong ideas of the stories they want to tell, and then they let them tell those stories for the most part. They seem to put storytelling and characters over anything. With [‘Phineas and Ferb’], we would write jokes for the kids and the adults in the room because we knew the adults would be there too. We were just careful not to do any double entendres.”

I need to say ducktales concept for mickey appearing was goddamn amazing

For those unaware The concept for mickey in ducktales 2017 was that mickey was an actor that has made it a bit too succesful thefore was quite out of touch

I've seen people say that thefore he would have been an asshole or something like that BUT hear me out, what if he was one of those completly unaware of themselfs and how big they made it celebrities? We could also have hints of people cutting him off of information to not "ruin his innocence" (wich sould also be a commentary on infantalization of grown people, something extremly harmful to both them and their loved ones)

Mickey could see a normal apartment and think it's of someone struggling because he just never saw how normal looks and he thinks that what he has is deluxe but not Extremly deluxe while in reality it is, he has it litellary the best while thinking he's just one of big actors, not one of THE big actors

mickey could buy people around him extremly expensive gifts potentialy leading to him being manipulated to buy more and more and his menagers trying to talk him out of it like some child instead of traight up saying "hey that's bad youre being used!" Because that "would ruin his innocence" and thefore unawarness, mikey could stop and start thinking about it only after donald or someone else points it out straight to him and doesn't treat him like his too "innocent" aka dumb to understand

Mickey being an out of touch actor could have been great both in cartoon and on meta level, it could lead to some intresting plot point with him and lesson about self awarness and how keeping someone "innocent" could lead to them getting hurt easily when there adults

But it's disney so we didn't get that of course!

Because why give their main mascot (nothing more) a personality again?

Honestly, I secretly wish that in the OG series, Drake would gradually become friendlier, earnest and modest like his reboot counterpart (but he can still be sassy! 😁). But what could lead to that character development? 🧐

Giving some sort of character arc for Drake Mallard would’ve been really good for that character honestly.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the original Drake Mallard just as he is. But having Drake turn into someone more like his Ducktales Reboot counterpart wouldn’t have been that bad of an idea.

Now what could lead to that character development?

I think if they simply had LP and Gosalyn call Drake out on his rude and egotistical personality, and not just roll their eyes and brush it off.

Also if they had presented Negaduck as not just a guy who’s the opposite of Darkwing, but also as someone Drake possibly turn out as.

Maybe when Drake was in the Negaverse they could’ve had a scene where he found his house, and the Negaversion of LP and Gosalyn were inside with Negaduck yelling at them.

Have Drake see how LP and Gosalyn react, and have him make the connection that he will yell at them like that sometimes.

Or even have Drake find out about DarkWarrior and let Drake find some similarities between the both of them, like how he is prone to extreme exaggeration which sometimes leads him to bad consequences.

Perhaps you could let Gosalyn tell Drake about DarkWarrior.

If Drake was told by his own daughter that a future version of himself tried to kill her simply because she never did things like, clean her own room, I think that would be quite a wake up call for Drake Mallard.

Wouldn’t you say?

I really think that not having Drake Mallard compare and see a bit of himself in Negaduck and DarkWarrior Duck was hugely missed opportunity.

I think those characters had the perfect opportunities to get Drake to examine himself and have him want to better himself, for his own good and for his family.

Going back to his egotistical personality,

what Drake could do about his ego is to just have him learn to turn it into more of a self confidence thing, and not put others down in order for him to be the best.

Like in the episode, “Whiffle While You Work”, Drake actually tried to bribe his own child so that she would back out of the contest; he claimed it was to protect Gosalyn from Quackerjack (which is probably part of it), but it’s pretty clear Drake wanted to win the Whiffle Boy contest.

Gosalyn so obviously gets her competitiveness from Drake.

Have him be disappointed that she will bribe and cheat people in order to win then have him realize that he’ll do that to.

And another thing about Drake is that he’s very smart when his pride doesn’t get in the way.

He can be a very good detective as well; he’ll over complicate things, but he’s good at what he does.

So you can still have Drake be confident in himself, but let him learn to be okay with other people being more famous and better than him when it happens.

Let him learn to, as you said, become friendlier, earnest and modest along the way.

It doesn’t have to be an immediate change, it can be a gradual one.

Have him let go of the need to be the best and let him want to be a superhero to keep people safe, not to be famous.

But his sassiness he can keep. I love his sassiness.
