Favorites : The Inkwell (1994)
Tumblr media
In the wake of Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, the doors seemed wide open for a number of young Black directors to step into the business, and one of the youngest and brightest was Matty Rich.  After writing, directing and producing the breakout debut film that was Straight Out of Brooklyn, Rich returned to the scene with a completely different look in the form of The Inkwell, but unfortunately (or possibly fortunately, as he found success in other realms), the film did not connect the same way as his debut.  In my opinion, this was a shame, as I’ve deeply enjoyed The Inkwell from my first access to it.
Sixteen year old Drew Tate (Larenz Tate) is an emotionally stunted and misunderstood young man living in Upstate New York.  His parents, Kenny (Joe Morton) and Brenda Tate (Suzzanne Douglass), decide to spend the summer of 1976 by taking Drew to visit his family in Martha’s Vineyard for two weeks.  The Tates settle in with Spencer (Glynn Turman) and Francis Phillips (Vanessa Bell Calloway), Drew’s aunt and uncle, his grandmother Evelyn (Mary Alice), and his cousin Junior (Duane Martin), but things get off to a rocky start.  Spencer and Francis suggest that Drew meet with their friend Dr. Wade (Phyllis Yvonne Stickley), a psychiatrist, much to the behest of Kenny, but Drew quickly finds himself obsessed with a local girl named Lauren Kelly (Jada Pinkett-Smith).  Despite the constant teasing of Junior and his two friends, Darryl (Markus Redmond) and Moe (Perry Moore), Drew takes a shot at getting to know Lauren, and in the process, discovers more about himself than he realized was possible.
While The Inkwell is at heart a romantic comedy and coming of age film, at its heart, it’s truly a film about the struggle between socio-political and economic ideas that plague Black people in their struggle to find where they fit in.  While we are given two extreme examples in Kenny and Spencer, at the heart of their characters, they perfectly define those concerned with the betterment of their people as a whole versus those who think that financial success will bring Black people to the place where they belong in society.  Kenny and Brenda’s struggles with raising Drew also bring up long-held assumptions of and hesitations to use psychiatry and psychology as a way to raise a child, chiefly based on ideas that Drew would be labelled crazy, and they would be labelled failures as parents.
Speaking of Drew, I found myself extremely connected to and understanding of the character seeing that I was a young, imaginative and, at times, isolated individual growing up.  Having our protagonist be an understanding, sensitive and caring young man rather than someone forced to make life-altering decisions with their back against the wall was a refreshing change of pace.  Positioning Drew as the son of Kenny begs the question if Drew’s sensitive nature stems directly from Kenny’s radical posturing and outward focus, as if his personality and actions were a cry for attention of some sort.  This is further driven home with details such as Drew’s doll/imaginary friend Iago whom he constantly talks to, or his tandem bike that publicly broadcasts his need for companionship.
It’s not only nice to see a film with a majority Black cast in a location such as Martha’s Vineyard, but more importantly, nice to see a coming of age film with Black characters that’s absent of the hood as the primary setting.  Speaking of settings, the Phillips home is definitely impressive, and Junior’s room specifically is a goldmine of stimulus.  With the many, many personalities presented through our characters, we are given a surprisingly deep exploration of Black identity.  As a 1970′s film, it probably doesn’t need to be stated, but the soundtrack is KILLER.  I remember this film being poorly received when it was released, which was a shame, because Matty Rich put together a truly poignant film… perhaps it was public expectations in the wake of the successful debut Straight Out of Brooklyn, but in my opinion, people missed out on a low-key classic.
With the iconic role of O-Dog the only one on his resume at the time, it would have been very easy for Larenz Tate to fall into the realm of typecasting, but The Inkwell allowed him to be as vulnerable and short of confidence as O-Dog was menacing and terrifying.  Joe Morton channels enough radical posturing to be believable as an ex-revolutionary, but not at the cost of displaying caring and loving characteristics.  Suzzanne Douglass displays all of the patience and unconditional love it takes to raise a troubled young man.  Glynn Turman dives headlong into bougie characteristics with great aplomb, barely avoiding becoming a caricature in the best ways possible, while Vanessa Bell Calloway steps in as the support system that allows Spencer to validate his actions.  Mary Alice plays withdrawn and guarded, only letting down her guard as the film comes close to resolution.  Duane Martin brings most of the comedy beats to the table, and has great chemistry with Markus Redmond and Perry Moore.  Jada Pinkett-Smith displays all the beauty and charm that makes her irresistible, while channeling all of the fierceness and selfishness it takes to make her wholly undesirable.  Phyllis Yvonne Stickley and Adrienne-Joi Johnson bring the most grounded and sincere human elements to the table, while Morris Chestnut plays the stereotypical womanizer role to a tee.  Supporting appearances by Akia Victor and R&B group Jade round out the main cast.
While the film was not a financial success at the box office, there has been a slow but steady growth of a grassroots following that has discovered the film many years after the fact.  As someone who has been a day one fan of the film, it’s nice to know that I’m not crazy, and it’s validating to know that I was way ahead of the curve in terms of The Inkwell fandom.  I will certainly continue to bear the torch for this slept-on classic, and maybe in due time, it will find the connection with the masses that it always deserved.

On the list of things you probably didn’t know existed is the Bad Boys spin-off TV show, LA’s Finest with Gabrielle Union more or less reprising her character from Bad Boys 2, now a police detective in LA. She’s never going to mention her brother or ex-boyfriend and Ernie Hudson is now her semi-estranged father. In the Martin Lawrence part to her Will Smith part, is Jessica Alba.  If you have low standards, this is a good time. Cast also includes movie star/comedian Duane Martin and Laz Alonso from Breakout Kings and The Mysteries Of Laura. Season 1 is 13 episodes and the show has been renewed for a second season.    The crazy part is trying to watch it. In some of the markets around the US where Comcast, AT&T or Warner Bros don’t have a monopoly on Cable and Internet there’s a company called Spectrum and they have decided to green light original content for their subscribers. Spectrum Originals series include a Mad About You reboot you may or may not have heard about briefly featuring the return of Paul Riser and Helen Hunt. Other shows include shows named Manhunt Deadly Games,  Temple, Side Games, Curfew and La’s Finest.    So if you live in those markets and subscribe to Spectrum Internet/Cable you get to watch these shows and if you don’t you can’t. Mostly. La’s Finest dropped on Spectrum May to June 2019 and is currently also available on Prime Video for $1.99 SD/$2.99 HD per episode or $14.99 HD for the entire season. Spectrum Originals are not available as a stand alone streaming service for whatever stupid reasons.        #GabrielleUnion #JessicaAlba #lasfinest #badboys #badboysforlife #badboys4life #spectrumoriginals #sonytelevision #spectruminternet #spectrumcable #comcast #primevideo #amazonprime #madaboutyou #curfew #sidegames #spectrumtemple #manhuntdeadlygames #LazAlonso #DuaneMartin #MartinLawrence #WillSmith #PaulRiser #HelentHunt #badboys2 #erniehudson (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/B937vxBBEm7/?igshid=d7xjahr3rs5

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of “Scream 2”. I’ve mentioned this in the past but I feel I’ll always remember seeing this at the midnight screening at the Oswego Cinema. It was bitter cold that night with some snow sneaking out occasionally. I remember the weather especially well considering the theater forced us to stand outside in a line. My brother, sister and my friend Ben all went as well. I remember sitting down in the main theater and the trailers coming up. There was one for “The Postman” and this one guy began to riotously laugh. Years later, I became friends with this man and I found out he was this guy because we talked about seeing “Scream 2” at midnight in Oswego. Small world. The thing about this movie (and the series on the whole) is how fun it is to try figuring out the killers. Cynically, yeah, you could probably look back and have 22 years of time to act like the twists were obvious, but that evening in the theater, theories were flying in our small group. I’m sure if I was my age now, watching four chuckleheads speaking suspects, I’d be pissed. I wish I could be 14 year old me again and get some of that wide-eyed nature back but this movie brings me back to that elation I felt that night. It’s likely why I’ve continually gone back to it over the years. #scream2 #wescraven #kevinwilliamson #ghostface #nevecampbell #davidarquette #courtneycox #jamiekennedy #timothyolyphant #lauriemetcalf #sarahmichellegellar #duanemartin #eliseneal #jerryoconnell #portiaderossi #rebeccagayheart #peterdeming #patricklussier #marcobeltrami #bluray (at El Apartamento De Sweeney) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5_-38tA1sO/?igshid=18klwv4ckrsxl

Favorites : Above the Rim (1994)
Tumblr media
In the mid-1990s, there was an interesting era where the NBA was reaching heights of popularity it had yet to experience, and by extension, the entire basketball culture was booming, including streetball.  The first And1 Mixtape wouldn’t drop for several more years, but a slew of basketball movies hit the theaters right around that time, and of all films that dropped, the undisputed cult classic right out the gate was Above the Rim.  Although I’ve seen this movie easily twenty or thirty times, it’d been long enough that I got excited when I found it on HBOMax, so I had to jump in on a viewing purely on the strength of nostalgia.
High school basketball phenom Kyle Lee Watson (Duane Martin) has hopes of moving on to Georgetown to continue his career, but a bad attitude and a lack of patience threaten his chances.  The waters become murkier when childhood friend Bugaloo (Marlon Wayans) returns home from prison with a major opportunity : a spot on a team in the ShootOut tournament coached by local knucklehead and hustler Birdie (Tupac Shakur).  Kyle quickly finds himself fascinated by the fast life, but the presence of Birdie’s older brother (and former high school basketball star) Thomas “Shep” Sheppard (Leon Robinson) keeps Kyle tethered, even if only loosely.  The fragile trust between Shep and Kyle is fractured when Shep and Mailika Watson (Tonya Pinkins), Kyle’s mother, become romantically involved.  At the behest of Mailika, Shep and Coach Mike Rollins (David Bailey), Kyle’s coach, Kyle dives headlong into Birdie’s world, spending his spare time with Birdie, Motaw (Wood Harris) and Bugaloo, which quickly leads him down a regretfully dangerous path towards destruction.
Above the Rim does an amazing job of providing serviceable amounts of basketball and hood film without committing itself too far in either aspect.  The basketball scenes are kinetic on both the high school court and the blacktop, but are not so didactic that they become slaves to continuity.  By contrast, we are given more of a general set of highlights, with choreography given to specific sequences in order to correlate the court drama with the personal drama, but anyone with a critical eye can easily pick out repeat sequences or footage… in my mind, it seems that director Jeff Pollack was looking to capture a certain feeling more so than provide authentic basketball.  As far as the hood aspects go, there is certainly a sense of danger and despair that can be felt, but the film doesn’t exploit or dwell on those moments.  Most of the violence is either suggested or off-screen, and while we do see a number of weapons brandished, when they’re used they do not result in cinematic blood and gore.
Maybe I was too young and lacked life experience back in the day, but it wasn’t until this viewing that Shep’s post-traumatic stress disorder became recognizable to me.  To see your life transition from stardom to incarceration before you graduate high school would be an incredibly jarring life transition, and to have it be centered around the accidental death of your best friend (that you get blamed for) would be devastating.  While the relationship between Shep and Kyle is a mentorship of sorts, Shep’s true motivation for pushing Kyle is to absolve himself of the torture he puts himself through by replaying his game with Nutso on a nightly basis.  It’s funny how it works like that in film… as a young, basketball playing teenager with enough skill to back up my talk, it was Kyle’s journey through high school and the ShootOut tournament that held my attention.  As a forty year old man with a lifetime’s worth of loss behind me, however, I saw Shep’s story in an entirely new light that captivated me.
As mentioned previously, the basketball captured on-screen has enough style points to cover for the lack of continuity or authenticity, and even a casual basketball fan or layman will have no trouble understanding what is going on at any given moment.  New York is always a strong setting for a film, and seeing that a portion of the film deals with the street basketball culture, it makes the locale a proper choice.  Time has put the soundtrack choices under an interesting lens, with the proliferation of Dogg Pound songs still banging like the classics they are, despite feeling odd via their placement in a New York-based film.  Pollack keeps the story purposefully simple in order to keep the narrative momentum moving at a rate similar to the kinetic nature of the basketball scenes.  The casting was high quality, especially on the antagonist side.
Duane Martin had a handful of television appearances under his belt, as well as an extremely memorable role in White Men Can’t Jump, but Above the Rim marked his first casting as a leading man, and he channeled every bit of youthful, wide-eyed naivety that he could to embody the fish lost in deep waters that was Kyle Watson.  Marlon Wayans kept his comedic touches, but took the first steps into the dramatic world that would later be captured in all their glory for Requiem for a Dream.  Tupac Shakur was already a household name, but his role as Birdie showed that his real life thug persona could be channeled and focused into a truly menacing character, similar to his appearance in Juice as Bishop.  Leon Robinson pulls out all of his leading man cards by being the strong, silent type with a deeply haunting past.  Wood Harris made the biggest blip on my radar with his loose cannon machismo, which he would later refine for his iconic role as Avon Barksdale.  Bernie Mac makes a couple of brief but memorable cameo appearances, serving as the emotional gut punch that drives home Birdie’s evil.  David Bailey and Tonya Pinkins step up with strong supporting roles, and appearances by Shawn Michael Howard, Henry Simmons, Michael Rispoli, James Williams and cameos by Bill Raftery and John Thompson fill things out.
It used to crack me up how much TNT would show this film after whatever slate of NBA games happened on any given night, but perhaps that is a testament to the strength that Above the Rim possesses.  Even the best masterpieces only have a certain level of return value to them, but I found myself just as captivated by my 2021 revisit to the film as I did nearly 30 years ago when it first appeared.
