I woke up from sleep at 3 a.m. and I couldn't remember who I am. I still don't.

I lay there with eyes blinking, adjusting to the light still shining on me. I must have fallen asleep while reading again.

I close my eyes and try to re-construct the dream I was dreaming.

I was walking with someone on a footpath alongside a parking lot. It had just stopped raining in my dream. The smell of wet mud had replaced the usual sandy wind. I was making paper boats and setting them to sail in the puddles. I have walked this road a million times as a child. I've hidden in the row of bushes behind me for countless I-spy games. The second balcony in the row of balconies behind the bushes leads to Sana's house. I wonder why I didn't drop in on her in my dream.

I try to remember who I was walking with. She was the only thing that didn't fit into the very familiar scene. She was a Bombay friend. 

My life is divided into two such circles; Toronto friends with Toronto memories and Bombay friends with memories of home.

 But my dreams are always set at home. In my dreams, I try to take people home, show them where I've come from, show them a part of me they will never see, because they weren't there.

She will never understand what that rain meant to me because most of my favorite moments have been dancing, walking and kissing in torrents which had the power to strip me bare.

She will never understand why I spend my Eids busying myself with work so that I don't have to miss home.

She doesn't see that the reason I'm so sensitive to sexist comments is because I've spent so much of my life behind a veil.

She doesn't know why I've stored badminton rackets even though they are broken and I don't play badminton anymore.

She doesn't even know what a real Tandoori is, or that I still sometimes mistake Sundays for family days.

 These are things I share with my home friends.

They are the ones I shared my innocence with.

The ones who knew me before I was affected by the opinions of the world. 

I shared with them my most pure, honest and carefree moments.

 I think of my friend’s Grandmother who in her last days of Alzheimer's could remember nothing apart from her home and her home people. In the midst of her forgetting, her only memory filled her with a longing so intense that it brought tears to all our eyes. Everyday she politely requested us to take her back home. When we tried to convince her that she was home, she told us that we don’t know what home is.

 One day, I will be her, and then I will close my eyes and sleep.

So that my dreams can take me home.
