[Julian Bashir] All This Time
Tumblr media
♫ - Always Been You - Shawn Mendez
A/N: Hello! I'm finally back and working on the requests in my inbox! If anyone is still here to read this, please enjoy! I thought I'd start with someone I love, and so this fic was born. Thanks for reading! - Mal <3
When you had joined Starfleet, you were hoping to be stationed on Deep Space Nine. You had gone through the Academy with your friend, Julian, and he had been assigned to the station as the resident doctor. You were so happy for him, this was all he had wanted. You were even more so when you learned that you had been accepted onto the station as a science officer yourself.
"Julian!" you called out, running to him with your PADD in your hand.
"Do I detect good news?" he replied, and when you nodded and tilted your screen to him, he burst into a light scream and picked you up, turning you around in the air. "My gosh, I am so happy for you! For both of us."
That night you both celebrated, perhaps a little too hard, but it was one of the best nights of both of your lives.
The morning of your departure, you took some time to think about your time on Earth, and growing up with Julian.
It was strange, you had watched him go from this quiet, barely academic child to somehow being incredibly gifted and beyond smart enough for his age. It wasn't until you were older that he confided in you that he had been genetically enhanced. It changed your opinion of him none, he was still your Julian. His parents and yours had hoped that maybe you two may have married, as they thought highly of you both. Julian had insisted it wasn't like that, and you had agreed, despite your feeling for it otherwise.
Julian was a great man, he was strong and caring, and he was handsome. You would be a fool to deny it. Over time, more as you grew older, you realised that it was no longer friendship you felt for him. It had been love for so long. You knew he viewed you as a best friend, and you were not about to ruin that; especially not on your final day on Earth.
Now, you were almost three years into being on Deep Space Nine, and the job had yet to get boring. There was always something happening, whether it be a planet in need of saving or stopping another impending war. Sometimes, even Gul Dukat would grace the station with his presence, which gave you all something to laugh at in Quark's that night.
"Is this seat taken?" A cool, familiar voice asked you as you sat at a table in the back of Quarks, sipping on an Antarean brandy. Turning your head, you met the face of Jadzia Dax, someone who had quickly become a close friend of yours.
"Does it look taken?" you replied, a cheeky tone in your voice. Jadzia and yourself always joked, and you were happy to have someone to be that comfortable with. You couldn't lie to yourself that Jadzia was very attractive, and one hell of a flirt. So, half the time, you gave as good as you got.
"How have things been on the station lately?" she asked. Jadzia knew you had been a little stressed that week, as work had piled up high in the science department. You sighed, shaking your head.
As you began to talk to her, you told her everything that had gone wrong that week. In truth, very little had gone right. Still, she sat tentatively and listened to every word. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted someone staring.
Julian was sat a few tables behind, alone and sipping at a drink. It wasn't often he drank alone, but it had been a tough week for him, too. As well as the workload and a quite the few emergencies, he was dealing with a new wave of emotions that had completely drained him. As of late, Julian had come to realise that he loved you, more than a friend should love another friend. He was certain you didn't feel the same, but the hope he still had that perhaps you would feel the same was still there, however faded.
Julian sighed as he watched you and Jadzia talk. Jadzia was smiling, laughing at your jokes. She even had her arm around you from time to time, and Julian was sure she was closer in proximity to you than when she had originally sat down. Jadzia caught his eye and winked, before going back to your chatter. To say he was jealous was an understatement; if anyone outside looked in, you and Jadzia looked like a couple, and he couldn't help but feel that it should be him.
Perhaps it was his imagination, but he could swear after he had made eye contact with the trill, she was more touchy and giggly with you than at first. Maybe he was imagining it, maybe not. Either way, it made him feel a certain type of way inside. He knew. It was definitely jealousy.
"Well," Jadzia broke the conversation, standing and placing a hand on your shoulder. "I should be off, I have a lot I need to be doing. Thank you for the drink, hopefully we can do this again sometime."
With that, she winked at you and took off, leaving  you chuckling to yourself. Ever the flirt, she was. Jadzia ducked past Julian's table on her way out of the bar, leaning in to his hear and startling him out of staring down his glass.
"If I've made you jealous enough to finally act on your feelings, I would suggest going over there and kissing that Lieutenant now."
Julian's head shot up.
"How did you know how I'm feeling?"
Jadzia simply laughed. "We all know, except them."
Pointing a finger your direction, Jadzia sauntered away and Julian made his decision. Downing the last of his drink, he strolled over to your table and met you with his ever beaming smile.
"Hi," he started, seeming more nervous than he had ever been. "Is this seat taken?"
"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" you asked rhetorically with a giggle. Music to Julian's ears, was your laugh. "Please, sit down. I'm happy to see you."
The god doctor took a seat, and his fingers played idly with his glass. A glass of which he wasn't sure why he was still holding, given it was empty. Still, he pushed it away and turned to you. Julian's intent was to talk to you, to tell you how he felt, but he was stricken for a second looking your way.
In the light of Quark's Bar, or what little of it there was atop the balcony, your face was lit up in the most angelic light. Your eyes sparkled more than usual, and your hair framed your face perfectly. Backed by the windows showing the stars, you were the brightest thing in the room. Never had Julian seen such a picture, and it stirred something inside him. He knew it was now or never, and he feared that if he spoke, he wouldn't be able to convey what he wanted.
Noticing him staring, you raised a brow and waved your hand in front of Julian's face.
"Julian? Is everything-"
Cutting you off, Julian's lips connected with your own as he moved forward, his hand wrapping itself around your waist. Finally, he was kissing you. Without thinking, you closed your eyes and kissed him back, your arms wrapping around his neck. It was lucky you were in the darker part of the bar, the quiet and stifled noises coming from you both would surely have disturbed some.
Pulling back after what had felt like a lifetime, you opened your eyes first and they fell upon Julian's face, his eyes still partially closed and looking dazed. It was a kiss you had waited forever for.
"I-I, um.." Julian struggled to formulate a sentence, and you sat smiling at him, your hand resting on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me."
"Did you mean to do that?" you inquired, hoping that his answer was yes. The doctor nodded, eyes twinkling and sparkling with wonder. Nodding, you leaned in again and quickly pecked his lips. Julian's mind was in overdrive.
"Finally," you whispered, placing your forehead against his own.
Julian held you, his arms around your waist and his head resting on your shoulder. You ran one hand through his hair, the other holding him tight. This was an action that was not uncommon for you both, but now it felt different. Now it felt right.
"I have loved you for so long," Julian started, remaining where he was. "I haven't been able to tell you because I haven't had the words, but I was worried you wouldn't feel the same. I see so many people around you who you could choose, and I figured I was just the best friend who got to hear about it all."
"Oh, Juli," you chuckled a little, not unkindly. "You listen to me. I have been aware of who flirts with me, and I will admit there are some rather beautiful people on this station. But, none of them are you. I fell for you heart and soul so long ago that anyone else is secondary. I care not for the advances of anyone else, your heart is all I want."
"My heart is exactly what you have."
Julian glanced up at you, lovesick eyes peering into your own. The night was spent together, doing all of the things you should have been doing and being so engrossed in each other that you had no real bearing for those around you. If you had, you would have noticed Quark on the other side of the bar, handing over a few bars of latinum to a certain smug trill.
"Well I'll be damned," Quark said, shaking his head. "I really thought they would be oblivious for the rest of their lives."
"Never doubt my tactics, Quark," Jadzia replied, chuckling.

idk i'd never paid much attention to past prologue aside from the opener but it's so fucking funny bc of the context it gives for everything else?? like okay garak cruises julian at the replimat (with unclear success), then gets approached by the sisters and says "shit, i need backup. who can i trust to be chill about black market dealing, yet honest enough to report it if necessary? ah yes the doctor will do nicely" ............aaand then julian flubs it so bad that garak immediately starts a book club called Espionage For Dummies. he says julian you are a baby bird. a tiny kitten. a helpless puppy all alone in a cutthroat world. you must open your eyes and learn to forage or you will never survive the winter and julian says okay 💖 yayy 💖 and by god they hold that book club every fucking tuesday for the next 5 to 7 years? only interrupted when there's an actual war on? the professional outrage was THAT strong

btw I love that "Constable" isn't Odo's actual rank, it's a semi-mean nickname that he can't get everyone to stop calling him.

got him off-balance!
#my art#ds9#star trek deep space nine#julian bashir#elim garak#garashir#watercolor#image desc in alt text#i normally post on mondays but. today im breaking my pattern! getting a little silly. getting a little wild. garashir jumpscare#“tumblr user chitinleg garak would neot easily let himself be swooped off his feet into a hug like that” yes i know BUT!#look at his expression. look at how his arms r pinned. he didnt let this happen LMAO julian just surprised him. grabby huggy human behavior#if you look really closely you can see the tiniest frown in the world on Garak's face. because he's like “EEP !”#cant see bashirs face at all in this only his body but i think we can all imagine that whatevers going thru his head. he needs this hug bad#ALSO. for anyone wondering what the fucked up shadow is that starts at the juncture of the teal sleeve-cap where its set into the armhole#the jumpsuits have a bit of a fold of extra fabric (called an Action Pleat) there which allows for a little more maneuverability of the bod#AND creates a really sleek and flat back panel#because you can see the fabric twists along the side arent grabbing the flat back fabric theyre grabbing the fabric folded beneath it#often times i think about drawing out a dissection of kiras first uniform and this voy era one for other artists to use. bc god knows#i struggled at first to find full body references#they like to shoot ds9 very close to peoples heads. and the camera is so blurry. they smeared butter on that thing. god bless

there are many neat reptilian characteristics that one can give Cardassians. I've seen shedding scales, tails and claws, scent marking, and people making them ectothermic.
but consider:
Color changing ridges. Just for funsies. We already tend to headcanon that the ridges and spoons (chula, if you prefer) turn blue when aroused, mimicking the make up they wear in canon, but it would be a bit interesting if the ridges were Fully color changing, a la chameleons. Especially if they changed color based on emotions.
Because their culture is very focused on the Good of the State, it would probably be taboo to have your emotions plainly visible (too much risk of your colors giving away the fact that you aren't 100% content blindly serving the state). I think it would be typical to wear make up to cover up the color changing scales, or to wear paint in 'positive' colors.
Soldiers and the Obsidian Order might even find a way to chemically neutralize the color changing, either temporarily or permanently - it could be far too much of a liability, if someone got captured and interrogated.
Most non-Cardassians would be entirely unaware that this was a normal part of Cardassian physiology. Novels might have oblique references to the colors when describing emotions, but any book that spoke too clearly of them would be almost sure to get banned. Bashir would be slowly taking notes about which colors in novels seemed to correspond to which emotions, but he'd have no idea that it was because Cardassians could Literally Turn Those Colors. He'd just assume their color theory was different, and that they were Really into color metaphors for some reason.
Could be interesting to explore the cultural implications and see what kinds of new mischief happens on the station due to it.

I know the decision to have Julian's parents have him augmented was made on the fly but imo its pretty obvious from early on that Julian has Family Issues because he avoids talking about his family like the plague and I think they should've incorporated this into the Julian and Sisko dynamic right from early on because I think it would've made for some really compelling stories and moments and could've set up a REALLY interesting Julian and Jake dynamic which they kinda started to do but never fully went for
#star trek: ds9#julian bashir#benjamin sisko#jake sisko#s1 Julian being so young and eager to prove himself and latching onto Sisko as this mentor figure to look up to#seeing Sisko with Jake and low-key seeking that fatherly figure connection which he won't even let himself think about#Sisko seeing this young brilliant doctor who's got all the makings to be something great and he's just GOTTA help him along#I think he would also catch on pretty quick that Julian's got Parental Issues#he tries to ask one day all casual like 'tell me about yourself :)' and Julian talks about nothing but Starfleet and med school#any attempts to ask about his family are met with awkward brief answers and redirections#and then theres the way Julian's eyes light up the first time Sisko invites him to watch a baseball game#like he Knows. he's a dad he Knows somethings up#but he doesnt pry#I also think it makes their dynamic more tragic towards the end of the series#where we have Sisko asking Julian to compromise his morals again and again#Julian's trust and respect for him gradually deteriorating#and then at the end of course Sisko is gone and they have no idea when he'll be back#which I think Julian would have a lot of complicated feelings about#but of course theres also Jake#I imagine they'd get closer#very brotherly dynamic#you know that scene in TNG where Wesley goes to Riker for girl advice and Riker and Guinan start flirting?#absolutely happens but with Jake asking Julian for girl advice and Julian wooing a girl at Quark's and Jake absolutely loses the plot#makes the events of ...Nor the Battle to the Strong more intense as well I think#also I like to think there'd be an episode where the B plot is Jake gets mad at Sisko and impulsively decides to move out#ends up at Julian's because he did not think this through#Julian is now very much caught in the middle of this family drama and he Fucking Hates It#also him and Jake are NOT compatible roommates but he's trying so so hard to be nice#eventually they have a talk and Julian cryptically hints at his own home life and tells Jake he's lucky he has a dad who cares so much#them being closer would work into what Alone Together sets up for them

It's so sad that the ST writers decided to leave Alexander living off with Worf's parents when Worf came to DS9 because we were not only robbed of watching Alexander be friends with Jake and Nog but, and hear me out, the absolute comedy of mistakes that could have been Alexander becoming friends with Gul Dukat’s daughter

If the dream version of the co-worker I have giant crush on appeared in my real life work meeting and possessively draped her arms around me in front of the actual real person I would throw myself out of an airlock in record speed but Julian Bashir really just copes with that, he is stronger than me

How Kira nerys, Odo, Julian Bashir would react to you being an Assassin
It took Starfleet a while to figure out who you were. It shouldn't have been difficult, you gave them all the clues.
Odo:
He was the one to arrest you for identity theft, first degree murder and more. You swiftly came along, wanting to hear who long you'd serve your sentence that you'd never serve.
Odo would not lie but he would flabbergasted, not that he would show it, you'd been hiding in plain sight for a while on the station. Always coming to chat to him
Oh, he felt betrayed the person that helped him settle so many cases was a someone who killed for themselves.
It's not long before you disappear, Odo doesn't come after you, feeling quite heartbroken about you to the point he doesn't want to interact with you.
Kira nerys:
She doesn't arrest you. She's been in war, has killed before.
She just asks you why, you reply with that it was your creed to do it, you only went after the bad people never the good one. In some way she sees this a parallel to her story.
Kira doesn't tell anyone about you, so you can safely escape the station.
Julian Bashir:
He thinks your joking until he talks to Garak about it, who in returns gives him cryptic messages about you
Julian only realizes you are not joking when you outright assassinate a Starfleet commander in a group of people that don't even realize what has transpired. The only reason he knew was because of his genetic engineering.
He can't tell anyone he saw you
Julian demands you leave as he does not want his best friend for years to arrest even if he saw the murder.
He drinks in Quarks while you run
Feel free to request!

the cardassian 'arguments as flirting' thing makes a whole lot of sense to me the more I think about it honestly. finding someone you not only feel safe to disagree with but can completely enjoy the company of even while you disagree seems as good a metric for chosing a life partner as any haha

I rewatched Past Prologue and still can’t get over how gay it is. How did Rick Berman read “I’m at your disposal”, “interesting new friend” and “enhance my evening” and nothing flagged? Also Bashir’s “this relationship has gotten a little out of hand” was insane. Relationship? After knowing him less than a day? Is the word ‘acquaintance’ not in your vocabulary? Are you kidding me Bashir?

kai winn is one of the most tragic characters in star trek canon. shaped by occupation, by violence, and by the fates decreed by literal god-like beings that know and affect the future, and always trying to honour the rights of these gods without ever being given direction from them, while others who haven't suffered for them or at times people who don't even really believe in them are granted visions and support. she's guided by what she has before her, and she's steadfast about honouring her ideals right up until the the final straw breaks her back, and it takes a long time for that straw to land. and even that turning is apparently beyond her control, fated to have happened the whole time. she was never in control of her destiny and her destiny was never to honour her gods like she desperately wanted to
textbook shakespearian classic tragedy. you perform the exact role that you are meant to perform and you're lauded for it, except for perhaps those naysayers who don't understand or who weren't worthy of the status they have to begin with by all accounts of the rules that have always applied until now, until suddenly (or so gradually that you didn't notice the change) that role becomes something villainous, and then you shun the people who abandoned you first. it was always going to end this way. she was never going to be okay. she was never going to get answers. the narrative is the prophets and the prophets were always bringing her right here. the betrayal of it all.
