"I'll go to Quark's because I was planning to go there anyway."
"I can handle Quark." "I know you can."
Odo loved to hear Quark whimper.
-- I'm eating up little Quodo crumbs in this book so far lmao

I read Fearful Symmetry and The Soul Key recently, and now I'm watching the dominion occupation of ds9 arc and god i hate dukat. i didn't think I could hate him more and then I read those books and now watching this arc just oh god he's awful. like its made every one of his interactions with kira so much worse and they already made my skin crawl

sometimes i think about how garak is the kind of old gay to wear a black turtleneck and wire rimmed glasses to read a book at a bar and who tries so hard to seem mysterious because that’s the only way he can even tangentially flirt, but everyone can tell it’s a sad old man ploy except this one guy, who has the reputation for being the shiniest naïvest kid on the block but the two of them start dating and everyone’s like oh no garak’s taken advantage of this hot young thing and conned him into hooking up with him but then they find out the kid actually has a fucked up intense cold machiavellian streak and that garak is using the fake mysteriousness to cover up the fact that he did war crimes for the CIA and is emotionally destroyed by his dishonorable discharge and somehow their initial guesses were kind of also correct but it’s bashir who has garak in a chokehold actually??
and everyone goes jesus christ thank god you two found each other you should never involve anyone else in whats going on with you.

Trektober Day 29 - Universal Translator Mishap. I'd imagine that without professional translation, most books run through the UT wouldn't be much better than Google Translate (although I suspect that Garak can read them just fine and is playing along anyway. It'd be weird to not learn at least a couple extra languages in the tailoring business).

In the very first scene of The Wire, Garak asks Bashir if he was up late “entertaining one of (his) lady friends.” Bashir explains that no, he was up really really late reading a boring book that he hated. Why did the important space station doctor deprive himself of sleep reading a terrible book that he didn’t like? Oh, because this guy he has lunch with likes it.
I want to point out that Garak’s question was obviously intended to serve as the official “No Homo” announcement for the ensuing (very homo) episode, as was obviously necessary for super gay episodes of tv in the 90’s. However, Julian’s response was so gay, I submit that it instantly Homo’d the No Homo.

I am still recovering from Miles O'Brien's magician career getting executed by Odo in The Siege by Peter David (book 2 of the DS9 numerical series).
Miles is practicing sleight of hand card tricks to impress and entertain Molly, so he tests them out on Odo. He performs the classic "pick any card/is this your card" trick and when asked Odo tells Miles it is absolutely not his card. 100% not it.
We find out chapters later that Miles did not make a mistake. It was a contextual joke that Odo does not own the cards, so of course no matter what card is pulled none of them could be his card.
Miles has never been the same. He will carry this pain longer than any Cardassian torture.

“Garak, let go! I can’t see the injury if you’re gonna hold my arm like that.”
“Forgive me, Doctor. I’m just a little nettled by the dynamic imbalance of our professions. You are always having me on my back to take care of the tiniest of scratches. And yet I have you perfectly standing still with every collar alteration or hemming of your pants. I would hardly call that a fair exchange, would you.”
“Hm. And here I thought you always enjoyed the access to my pants.”

I like to think that when he's up late running tests and waiting on results, Bashir reads the stuffy Cardassian literature Garak keeps recommending him.

One small perk of no one caring about Star Trek novels is that bookstores tend to throw the new ones on the shelves weeks early.

One of the things I love most about Star Trek is that is goes on forever. You like a character? Beyond the episodes, there's more than likely at least dozen novels about them. Not enough? Have a ton of comic books where they go on even more adventures. Still need more? Here's a thousand fanfics. Here's a background graphic from an episode seen for 0.2 of a second detailing their education and qualifications. Horny for them? There's art for that, fic for that and maybe even naughty photos of the actor. Starships your thing? Here's a technical manual explaining how things work, and a set detailed floorplans. Want more? Here are books on the histories of the pretend starships, with endless variant designs and backstory for their creation. Still not enough? Walk around the ship on the laptop or computer as if you're there. You like the aliens? Here's a novel detailing their backstory. Here's a pretend travel guide to their planet. Still not enough? Here's an old Star Trek book with details about their anatomy. Still want more? Here's a fan diagram of the alien's penis.
