TUCO mourns the passing of Francine Edwards known in the calypso word as "Singing Francine" who passed away early this morning, 16th December, 2022.Singing Francine was born in Barbados on February 13th 1943 and came to Trinidad at a young age. When asked how she began singing calypso, she responded, “I never became involved in the calypso art form. I was born into the calypso art form.” Throughout her career, she has used her musical talent to address social issues, particularly those directly affecting women. In 1975, she sang “A Call to Women,” encouraging more women to use calypso music as a vehicle of self-expression. In her 1978 calypso “Runaway,” she addressed the topic of domestic violence, urging women in abusive living situations to seek help.Singing Francine was one of the most successful calypsonians in Trinidad and Tobago, winning the National Calypso Queen competition in 1972, 1973, 1981 and 1983. Over the course of her career, she has become an important figure in the development of not only calypso, but also parang.In 1981, Singing Francine released the parang album “Christmas is Love,” which featured a blend of calypso, soca and parang sounds. Francine’s album came only three years after the calypsonian Crazy, released “Parang Soca”—one of the first songs to feature what we now call “parang soca” or “soca parang,” making him a pioneer in this genre. Since then, many musicians such as Baron, Scrunter, Chalkdust, Kitchener, Sundar Popo, Drupatee Ramgoonai, Rikki Jai and Singing Francine have also made their mark by blending the dynamic sounds of calypso, soca, chutney and parang.Over the years, Singing Francine has released a number of Christmas hits, earning her the reputation as one of the best parranderos in Trinidad. Some of her classic parang songs include “Hooray, Hurrah,” “Parang Parang,” I Love Christmas,” “Christmas is Love,” “Caribbean Christmas,” and “Ay Ay Maria.”On behalf of the President, Ainsley King and the General Council of TUCO, we extend condolences to the family, loved ones, friends and colleagues of the late Singing Francine. May she Rest in Peace.

When I met Drupatee Ramgoonai and her husband, I had no idea what lay ahead for her and for the music she would boost into popularity beyond measure. They arrived quietly carrying hefty tassa drums, which I arranged carefully behind the singer to make photographs for her first album, featuring Mr Bissessar, which defined a new category of soca, one that Shorty had flirted with on his albums but which the Ramgoonais took firmly and authoritatively in a new direction. I confess to later being startled by the…um…vigorous performances that the quiet Mrs Ramgoonai put down on stage, but there was not question of her agency and determination in ignoring naysayers and bringing Indian music and influences more fully into focus in Carnival. July 16th, 2018———– Chutney music’s explosion across the Caribbean and wider region is being closely monitored by one of the Caribbean’s biggest promotional groups, Randy Glasgow Productions (RGP). The group’s CEO, Randy Glasgow says his team is prepared to work arduously behind the scenes to deliver to Chutney musicians and entertainers, the required platforms to better showcase their music. So committed is RGP to this goal that on July 21st in Trinidad, the outfit will deliver the first ever Chutney Brass Summer Edition.

“Any music created in Trinidad and Tobago must not be seasonal. In our company’s continued drive and efforts to get Chutney music in Bollywood films and played across the world, we in T&T must enjoy and celebrate this genre of music, year round. It is ours. It is worth international recognition. There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” said Glasgow.

Coining the event the biggest Chutney event to hit the Caribbean for what’s commonly referred to as the summer period, Glasgow says Chutney Brass  In Summer 2018 will deliver the biggest Chutney Stars, the most talked about Chutney Bands and the greatest Chutney music dancers. “We cannot love our music or show appreciation for it on a part time basis. For people around the world to love it and give it the respect it deserves, we must show it respect, ourselves,” he said, explaining that after consideration on this, and discussion, it was agreed that the inaugural Chutney summer event should take place at the official heartland of the genre, that being Debe, South Trinidad.

Chutney Brass In Summer 2018 takes place at the South Haven Shopping Centre. The event will feature the likes of Ravi B, Nisha B, Nishard and Gregory Ayuen with the band Karma, KI The Band, featuring Neval Chatelal, Indian music’s newest star, Stephon Jaikaran, Chutney icon, The Raja Rakesh Yankeran, Chutney Queen, Drupatee, Sally Sagram, T&T’s biggest rock band, Black Rose in a special performance and delivering some combined Soca and Latin flair will be Mr. Renzo and the sultry, Neniita. The entertainment doesn’t stop there,Glasgow assures. Acutely in tuned to the energy of Trinidad and Tobago’s people, Randy says a number of Soca’s leading artistes will also hit the stage at Chutney Brass In Summer this year. Orlando Octave, undoubtedly a crowd favourite, along with the lovely, Jadel will represent on show night. Additionally, a number of top tiered DJs will be a part of the event, among them, female DJ sensation, DJ Ana. Big Rich of the famous Pungalunks factory will also be in the lineup along with a number of other major bands and Chutney superstars who’ll be added as the show’s date draws closer.
