Aaron Duncan has been previously photographed for the series. At the performance with the Back to Basics tent on February 17, 2022 he performed Play Soca and Back to Basics. #calypso #kaiso #tent #music #Carnival #singer #performance #trinidad #trinidadandtobago #tuco #backtobasics #portofspain #queenshall #streaming #2022 The Calypsonians 2020 was an attempt to survey and record in visuals the calypsonians working in tents for this year’s Carnival season. It is an imperfect record, dependent on the willingness of individuals to participate and tents to accommodate the project. On February 17, 2022, I had an opportunity to add to the project by adding some calypsonians performing at a safe-zone concert at Queen's Hall. Thirteen new calypsonians have been added to the portfolio along with one updated photo of a previously photographed calypsonian. Girlschool – Queens Hall, Nuneaton, UK (15th February 2020)
Storm Dennis may have been raging outside, but that didn’t stop a capacity audience turning out at Nuneaton’s Queens Hall to see the last gig of Girlschool’s latest UK tour. Formed in 1978, during the early years of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Girlschool is now the UK’s longest-running all-female rock band. Like their contemporaries (and close associates) in Motörhead, Girlschool have blurred the boundaries between metal and punk, fusing elements from both genres to create their own distinctive sound. The current line-up includes founder members Kim McAuliffe on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Denise Dufort on drums, together with Jackie Chambers (who joined the band in 2000) on lead guitar, and bassist Tracey Lamb, now on her third stint with the band (having replaced Enid Williams in 2019).
Tumblr media
The evening began with a short set from The Cooler, who demonstrated their talent with a selection of rock covers. Next came London-based rockers Evyltyde, who are rapidly gaining a reputation as an up-and-coming band to follow. Lead singer Hannah Delaney’s melodic vocals perfectly complemented fellow band members Danny Merton on guitar, Jeff Rolland on bass and Gavin Rodriguez on drums. Evyltyde’s set included several tracks from their most recent (and third) full-length album, Singularity, including ‘The Genie’, ‘The Wall’ and ‘Never Fall’, together with older material such as ‘No Violet’ and ‘Dark Within’. Their hugely enjoyable and fast-paced performance displayed considerable musicianship and they are a band I look forward to seeing again. Now it was time for the headline act, and Girlschool hit the ground running with ‘Demolition Boys’, followed with barely a pause by ‘C’mon Let’s Go’. The band’s energetic stage presence is evident from the outset, and is maintained throughout their set – here are skilled musicians who clearly love what they do, and this shines through their performance.

Next comes ‘The Hunter’ from their 1981 sophomore album, and then we jump forward to 2015 and the band’s most recent studio album with the title track ‘Guilty As Sin’. A rapid-fire series of classic Girlschool tracks follow, with ‘Action’, ‘Hit and Run’, ‘Future Flash’, ‘Nothing To Lose’ and ‘Kick It Down’. There is no diminution in the band’s energy as they play ‘Take It Like A Band’, also from their 2015 album. ‘Watch Your Step’ follows, and then it’s time for some audience participation with ‘Take It All Away’, the band’s first single which was released in December 1978. Jackie dangles the microphone over the front row, and everyone gets to have a turn at singing the chorus. It was this single that first brought the band to the attention of Motörhead’s Lemmy, paving the way for the collaborations that followed.

‘Take It All Away’ is followed by ‘Race With The Devil’, and then a tribute to Lemmy with a cover of ‘Bomber’, before the main set reaches its climax with ‘Emergency’. Two encores follow: ‘Screaming Blue Murder’, the title track of their 1982 album, and finally the ZZ Top cover ‘Tush’ that featured on their second album. This outstanding gig marked the end of Girlschool’s current tour, and what a fitting finale it was – the crowd’s rapturous applause appropriately rewarded a night of excellent music. Be sure to catch a future concert whenever you get the opportunity – this is an experienced band with a great back catalogue who are at the top of their game. Unmissable. Austin Lyons is Superblue. Lyons was a star from his first song as a calypsonian in a tent, 1980's Soca Baptist, which won the Road March that year. He is a ten-time Road March winner and a seven-time winner of the TT Soca Monarch Competition. The originator of the 'jump and wave' style of soca, he is also the only calypsonian to ever be featured on Sesame Street. At the performance with the Back to Basics tent on February 17, 2022 he performed Soca Baptist, and Ethel. #calypso #kaiso #tent #music #Carnival #singer #performance #trinidad #trinidadandtobago #tuco #backtobasics #portofspain #queenshall #streaming #2022 The Calypsonians 2020 was an attempt to survey and record in visuals the calypsonians working in tents for this year’s Carnival season. woke up at five-something this morning with horrid stomach cramps.  eventually fell back asleep and had the weirdest little two-part dream...
part one - this was super short, i was basically just online and reading the summary for a book called Cinderella Upside Down.  it was about a young ballerina (sixteen or so) who’d gotten the lead role in her ballet school’s production of Cinderella, but because they didn’t have enough boys, the Prince was being played by another girl named Lindsay, who the protagonist secretly had a massive crush on.
part two - i was a boy, i think, traveling through this dark, snowy landscape on foot.  there was occasionally an older man with me - idk if he was trying to stop me or what, but i kept telling him to leave me alone.  in the middle of the night i finally came to this tiny little run-down cabin that had apparently been my old house, though nobody had lived there in years.  around the back was a door into an isolated room that was kind of like a shrine or altar.  i guess i was polytheistic, since i remember a few different gods, like a god of light and a god of ‘shrouded dreams’, whatever that means.  i took all the little cards and statues and whatnot off the shrine and stuffed them into my backpack and then kept walking, even though i was freezing my ass off.
eventually, i came to a long wooden house (called the Queenshall) that had a huge set of carved double doors at one end; i went around to the other end of the building to where a smaller door stood at the top of some stone steps.  the man had followed me again and asked what i was doing, and i told him to go, i’d be fine here.  he left and i went into the Queenshall.  it was very warm and bright inside, full of lanterns and lit fireplaces, but i didn’t get a good look at anything because these two young kids saw me immediately and screamed my name (still Alex, haha) and ran to hug me.  then this woman came to hug me too and... it kinda got a bit jumbled there?  from what i recall, these people weren’t my biological relatives, but i’d lived with them for a while and basically considered them family.  i had left a few years ago to temporarily work on a trading ship called Delaine’s Hope; i reminded the woman of this when she asked where the hell i’d been, and she said that job was only supposed to last for one year and i had been gone for two.  i claimed i’d just stayed on the Delaine’s Hope, but i was lying.  no idea where i actually was during that second year*.  i went along to the kitchen where two girls were cleaning up some dishes - they were also thrilled to see me but the younger girl wouldn’t hug me because she claimed i had cooties lol.  i blamed the older girl for teaching her that because she used to be the one who said i had cooties, and now she was acting all awkward around me and blushing a lot, which was pretty funny... anyway, i was going to another room in the Queenshall to talk to ‘Roseen’, who was the oldest woman in the family and kind of like a grandmother to me, but i woke up around then.
