🌳Ogham Master Post🌲
(Aicme links below)
Ogham is an Early Medieval (and the first) Celtic writing system created in 100 CE, which went on to develop Ancient Irish in the 4th-6th centuries CE, and Old Irish in the 6th-9th centuries CE. It was also used to write Pictish, Scottish Gaidhlig, and some Welsh.
The Ogham alphabet consists of four major letter groups—or aicme—to make up the feda, and one additional group that was created in the 6th century of the Old Irish period—the forfeda.
Ogham can be seen today carved into ancient stones in Ireland, Scotland, and in Wales, some dating back to the 4th century CE.
Each character is representative of a type of tree or plant with additional associations such as wealth, healing, love, etc. Today, these characters are used primarily in divination practices in Celtic paganism and Celtic folk witchcraft as wooden staves, cards, or carved onto stone and other natural objects. Ogham is typically written vertically from bottom to top, resembling the growth of a tree. However, it can also be written horizontally by rotating the characters 90° to the right (as shown in aicme links).
First Aicme (B)
Second Aicme (H)
Third Aicme (M)
Fourth Aicme (A)
Fifth Aicme/Forfeda (EA)
If you would like typed Ogham on a mobile or desktop device, be sure to use the horizontal format of the Ogham Transliterator. Highlight, copy, and paste the text to use in various projects.

Celtic Ogham divination set ~ a work in progress
I've been wanting to make my own "runes" or stone divination method, I could not vibe with any I found in store, so I've made some in polymer clay.
Like tarot, each symbol has its own meaning I both researched historical and wrote myself in my Grimoire. I now have my own magic tool for self growth made by myself, and spirit. I feel connected even tho I have not used them yet.
Exploring my Celtic roots has been the most grounding experience with witchcraft I've had. I'm much more aware of my whole self and even my subtle body energy system.
I am magic. I am learning to love myself. I am learning to love the flow of life.
These ogham will help me grow to my highest self.

𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Beith / Birch
Today our attention is being drawn to purification of the mind, body and spirit. Before we birth something into our world or set out on a new project or adventure, it would be wise to purify the self so that we do not carry any of the old energy into our new venture. Whatever it is we may wish to set on starting should be done so in a way that is clean and pure. It denotes a feeling of ritual purification before we do any big magickal work for example. Beith is asking us to set some time out of our day to renew our energy so that we can be clear conduits for whatever we wish to focus on. Perhaps have a tidy or a good smudge around the house in order to get the space cleared and ready for the new to enter.

This says buckthorn not blackthorn. And while buckthorn is a Eurasian tree, you almost certainly have seen it (“have access to it”) in person, because it’s heavily invasive (and ecologically destructive) in North America from landscape plantings escaped.
I appreciate your feedback. That was definitely an oversight on my part. Many traditional lists do say "blackthorn," although some say "buckthorn" instead.
Regardless, the exact details of the example are less relevant to me than the point I was trying to make.
While I may have encountered either tree at some point, neither of them are trees I readily would recognize in the wild - and as you pointed out, they aren't native or naturalized species to this area (native species being plants like juniper, which have grown here for millennia, and naturalized species being like dandelions, which aren't native but fit into the local ecosystem and provide benefits for native species). Additionally, while they certainly do sound invasive and problematic, they still aren't overly widespread in my patch of the USA - at least not yet - whereas other invasive species like Bradford pears are more likely to be found in local forests here.
In my experience, it's been more beneficial for folks to look for plants and trees that *are* local species and/or are relevant to their area. Buckthorn is not overly relevant to my area. Locust trees, however, have similar properties and have been used & cultivated here for centuries. So for a local solitary Druid, it makes more sense to work with locust and focus on that correspondence. Likewise, locust trees are highly invasive in Europe (especially honey locusts) and they have almost no history there, so a person from Europe would probably have an entirely different view of them.
Even species that do fit into the traditional Ogham - something like a honeysuckle or ivy, for example - can vary wildly from region to region. And folks who live in, say, Brazil may have a totally different view of some plants or characteristics than I do. And I think, for some folks, incorporating those personal/local perspectives can be very useful to one's practice.
Naturally, that idea isn't going to appeal to everyone, and that's ok. The traditional correspondences for the Ogham, in all their forms, are 100% valid too. I personally use either or both, depending on the situation, in my personal practice as a revivalist. ^^

Brigit, Druid Goddess Brigit is a ‘pan Celtic’ goddess, who was worshipped by both the Goidelic and Brythonic Celts in the British Isles and beyond. She is a solar deity, who once hung her mantle on a sunbeam. In Celtic mythology, Brigit is the daughter of the Morrighan and the Dagda, the Good God and Chief of the Tuatha de Danaan, the ancient fairy race of Ireland, and the sister of Ogma, who invented the Ogham alphabet. She was the wife of Bres, King of the Fomorians (who were at war with the Tuatha de Danaan). Brigit was said to have been the mediator of peace between the two ancient warring tribes. She was the mother of the Three Gods of Danu – Ruadan, Iuchar and Uar. These three Gods were said to have married the three princesses of Ireland – Eire, Fodhla and Banbha. In other sources, Brigid is the daughter of Boann, the Goddess of the River Boyne in Ireland. Boann (bo fhionn) means ‘white cow’, an association she shares with Brigid. Brigit is primarily the patron Goddess of poets, healers and smiths. She is also a patron of other womanly arts – midwifery, dyeing, weaving and brewing, and the guardian of children and farm animals – particularly cows. The island of Ireland itself is said to be the green mantle of Brigit. She is also said to be the patron of travellers, sailors, and fugitives. She is specifically a patroness to the Druids in her aspects of poetry (Bards), healing and prophecy (Ovates) and blacksmithing (Druids).

I take a sort of “rule of cool” approach to my pagan faith. I use archaeology and history as my baseline, and I freely incorporate elements from folklore and superstition to fill in the gaps. However, I think there’a an argument to be made that if we want Gaelic paganism to thrive as a living religion, we have to allow innovation and reinterpretation. Do we have any proof of Ogham being used for divination? Nothing concrete. Is it cool and do I still do it tho? Fuck yeah.
As long as you’re honest about what’s historically attested, what is speculative, and what is newly created, I don’t see why old and new can’t coexist. They do in my faith anyway.
Fuck that neo Druid and Celtic shaman shit tho. Get that shit right tf outta here.

Hi Nick! Welcome to Tumblr + congrats on the incredible first ep of Downfall! I was wondering as I looked at your character art--did you specifically request Ogham on Ayden's shield? Did that come from production? Brennan/Matt? Just curious! It's an incredible detail!!
Thank you so much! I requested it! I’ve always loved Ogham and felt it really tied into his druid barbarian background

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (27)
A for Ailm (Pine) - December 23rd Birth of the Divine child
“The birth of the King of the Flourishing Half Year - The Celtic Tree Calendar”
Stars: Mars & Sun; Gender: female; Metal: gold; Patrons: Artemis, Ariadne, Rhea, Cybele, Druantia, Dionysus, Bacchus; Symbols: foresight, purity, objectivity, birth
The Ogham alphabet has 5 vowels. The number 5 is the sacred number of the 'White Goddess'. Like all five vowel trees, pine is a female tree. And it is also the first vowel A, the tree of birth.
In ancient Greece, the pine tree was the goddess of the moon and dedicated to Artemis, who was responsible for the birth of children. The birth of Christ is celebrated on 25 December, and the Christmas tree decorated on this day is Norway spruce. The spruce is a member of the pine tree family. Although Christ's birthday is now celebrated on 25 December, it is believed that in earlier times our ancestors celebrated the birth of the Son of God on 23 December.
23 December marked the beginning of the 'Half Year of Light' and the birth of the "Son of God, the King of the Flourishing Half Year", and a gift of the wisdom of our ancestors.
On the winter solstice, druids (Ref2) in Europe lit large bonfires of pine and yew. Around the same time, the festival of the Druid Queen, Druantia, also took place. These large bonfires, which were built on the winter solstice, were passed on to the Yule Log. While the Yule festival lasted, people lit candles on pine trees and decorated them with glittering objects. The Christmas tree is the successor to this custom.
The ancients believed that the pine cones were cleverly guided by magical powers, as they spiralled and followed the same clockwise direction on their trunks as the earth around the sun. Yellow pollen was utilised in the 'money-accumulation spell' as yellow attracts gold. Pine branches are said to prevent evil from entering the house if hung over doors and windows, and old people are said to be rejuvenated if they carry pine cones.
Futhermore, Native Americans put a bag full of pine needles under their pillows on the floor when they have insomnia. In ancient Egypt, doctors in the Pharaoh's service used pine tar and turpentine oil to treat pneumonia.
The ancients learnt from the towering pines the importance of looking at things objectively and from a broad perspective. Pine teaches that you have to be positive about things, correct mistakes immediately and chase responsibility yourself.
So, have a happy Christmas everyone, surrounded by the tree again this year.

DAILY ANGEL MESSAGE!
Take a deep breath, let it out slowly, say this prayer and then keep reading: “Thank you angels for revealing to me what I need to know!”
MESSAGE
Hold things together. Don’t make any sudden moves or changes. Stand strong, knowing you are where you are supposed to be.
ABOUT
The druids were the ancient wise ones of Britain, Ireland and France. They had a deep connection with the Earth, the sun and the moon. They were the scholars who created the Ogham tree language, and they were known for their creative skills in storytelling, poetry and craftsmanship.
EXTENDED MESSAGE
When the Druid card appears in a reading, you’re being guided to dig deep within and hold your station. If you’re wondering what to do next or have a sense of anxiety about what is unfolding in your life, it’s time to shift your perceptions and move back to a state of trust. Don’t change your plans or do anything drastic, just trust in the process and let everything happen as it needs to before taking any more steps. Think of a tree – it has strong roots, yet continues to grow and bear fruit. Your life will be a reflection of this.
DECK: Angels and Ancestors Oracle
ARTIST: Lily Moses
Thank you for sharing this card if it relates to you!

𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ceirt / Apple
Today we might find ourselves struggling with our mental health or unstable emotions, perhaps we run into unpleasant people or we find ourselves being triggered for one reason or another. Chaos abounds, and while we are likely to be faced with the more traumatised parts of our psyche, we need to make sure we don't act self destructively or in ways where we ultimately only make ourselves worse. Be aware that things could be hard today, or you could be met with people who only make things worse. The best bet on how to deal with this energy is to simply walk away if we find ourselves feeling emotionally or mentally unstable.
