"I don't know you, and you don't know me. Let's keep it that way fa both our sakes."
Name: Sergio Salvadora
Age: 25
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 120 lbs
Species: Cat
Physical description: Short, wiry, very mild definition in his upper arms, over two dozen cut marks around his torso with patchy fur around them, predominantly orange fur with dark stripes from the top of his head down to his tail; white fur from his snout down to his inner thighs, pinkish-red "beans" on his hands and feet
Background from Mason's perspective: Born and raised in Harlem, New York, to Demetrius and Geraldine Salvadora. Geraldine was a nurse in a large Manhattan hospital, while Demetrius struggled to hold down any one job. Records indicate a conjugal visit between the Salvadoras roughly nine months before Sergio was born.
Demetrius was killed in a bout of gang violence the day Sergio turned 7 years old. Agent Bonita Salvadora of SIN claimed that Geraldine didn't want anyone from Demetrius's side of the family to contact her or her son.
Between the ages of 12 to 15, Sergio had scattered reports of delinquency and truancy on his record, from alleged pickpocketing and shoplifting to vandalism. His teachers in middle school noted that he had developed a brash streak, a few even saying he was "incorrigible." Despite this, he showed promise in mathematics and economics classes.
There are hazy reports of Sergio having joined a street gang known as the Sixth Street Clique, who notably initiated a gunfight with rival gang South Side Vipers. Everyone in the latter gang was reported dead, whereas the Sixth Street Clique was all either gunned down or arrested...save for one, who managed to escape the police. Surviving gang members mentioned Sergio's name during interrogations, but the case had gone cold before anything could stick.
Sergio was made a ward of the state and got his GED through private tutoring. When he was 18, he signed on with the Specialized Laborers of New York, a local worker's union that provided aid to myriad professions, blue- and white-collar. He started working for Olin's Repossession at 18 and stayed for three years, then became a taxi driver after the owner of Olin's Reposession had died under unknown circumstances. He then went on to drive for Chariot, a ride-sharing company that quickly took cities like New York by storm.
Rumors have spread about the Laborers being more than a workers' union, with scattered reports of kidnapping, extortion, and murder. The police haven't found anything that could stick, but there is also no telling if the Laborers have some officers in their pocket. We have found no connections between the Laborers and the aetherial, so we are currently leaving any issues regarding them to the mundane law enforcement. Sergio doesn't seem to be aware of his family's vampire hunting business due to his father's separation from the rest of his family, according to Agent Salvadora. We will allow her to keep tabs on him and to give SIN, and by extension us, updates on his whereabouts and exploits.

Underdog of Connecticut
Documenting the life and times of DJ Mad Max.
“My drive and people doubting me are my biggest motivators. Fear is not trying and failing.” - Maxwell Coughlan
Tumblr media
What does Connecticut mean to you?
“Connecticut means everything to me, it’s my home, where I was born and bred. I grew up in South Norwalk on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Townhouse Gardens. South Norwalk shaped who I am today because of the authenticity. My community made me protective of other cultures and stand up against racism/injustice. It’s very challenging to be successful from my hood because of the obstacles many face such as the temptations of the street life, drug addiction, and not taking our education seriously or expressing our talents because of peer pressure. The crabs in a bucket mentality is huge and means people don’t want to see someone with potential make it out. When I look back on the past, it’s sad when you find out someone you knew went to jail or overdosed at a young age because you’re like damn they didn’t make it out.
“As a child, I attended private Catholic schools and my peers constantly looked down on me because of my environment. Many would say “you live in the hood” or “wigger.” Comments like that would hurt, but after a while I blocked them out because South Norwalk was home, and that’s all I knew. I grew up on Hip-Hop and R&B culture, throwback Mitchell & Ness jerseys, baggy clothes, and fresh sneakers. Personally, I couldn’t relate to Vineyard Vines, Docksiders, or the music my peers enjoyed. God truly blessed me with a strong support system from my mother. She pushed me from birth, which helped me receive an academic scholarship to St. John’s University in Queens, New York. If you don’t have a supportive family, then you really have to grind and bet on yourself.
“I feel like Connecticut doesn’t get much love because it’s a small state and the culture is untapped. Connecticut has quite a few success stories like: Chris Webby, Cassie, John Mayer, Calvin Murphy, Justin Long, and Meg Ryan. The biggest issue with my home state is the void of entertainment opportunities for creatives to thrive financially, plus many natives don’t support homegrown talent. The lack of support forces the dreamers to relocate to achieve their dreams.”
Tumblr media
How do you plan to give back to Norwalk?
“My goal is to give back to people who are suffering from cancer and other illnesses. Donate money to cancer research at the Whittingham Cancer Center of Norwalk Hospital and educate individuals on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Even at a young age, you’re at risk which is unfortunate. Aside from healthcare, I would like to establish clothing drives as well as hosting seminars on becoming independent and dreaming beyond difficult circumstances.”
What city would you be from in Connecticut outside of Norwalk?
“If I had to choose another city besides Norwalk, it would be Hartford. Hartford has an extensive entertainment scene compared to other cities in Connecticut and provides greater opportunities for artists and journalists. They have notable venues such as: The Xfinity Theatre, The Webster, and Infinity Music Hall. The diverse population is a great draw plus the city is one of the most affordable areas in the state.”
Tumblr media
How will you contribute your talents to “Hollywood?”
“I will be a breath of fresh air for Hollywood. My talent as an actor/entertainer stems from being original and paying homage to the legends.”
What was it like gaining a role on Power?
“It was amazing. I learned a lot about how a major television production is organized and operated. It was strict and time efficiency is key. I was featured in a club scene where a fight broke out between rapper Yung Bleu and another person. It was a dope preview of what will eventually become my future in television/film production.”
Tumblr media
Dream role in a movie?
“This is tough for me because I feel like a role has to match the actor’s personality. I always wanted to have a lead role similar to Tony Montana in “Scarface” or Nino Brown from “New Jack City.” I would love to do something in makeup similar to Johnny Depp’s role in “Dark Shadows.” My agent believes I would make a great undercover cop as well. In the future, I could see myself starring in a potential biopic like Eminem’s “8 Mile” to showcase my life’s journey to success. I am open to many different roles, but those are a few roles that come to mind.”
Tumblr media
Predict the future of the motion picture industry?
“I think you’re going to see more independent filmmakers thrive because of the lack of creativity from major production studios and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. I say it all the time, there’s no more classics! It’s rare for me to enjoy more than one film that comes out each year. The remakes are played out and there’s an absence of authenticity. Entertainers don’t receive what they are truly worth because executives at the top make the majority of the box office profits. The strike exposed that. I always valued going to the movie theaters when I was a kid and still do. Due to social media, I feel like the youth couldn’t care less about going to the theaters when they don’t have the attention span or can just watch the film on Peacock from their couch. It may be hard to receive the fruits of your labor right away when you’re an independent filmmaker, but if your material can get praised at film festivals and picked up by streaming services you will become successful.”
Tumblr media
What draws you to the Western United States?
“That’s where the entertainment scene is thriving in my opinion. Las Vegas has a huge nightlife entertainment scene and helps artists build successful careers. It’s an affordable city to start out and grow. On the other hand, Los Angeles has been calling my name for years now. I’ve been enthralled by the west coast vibe since a kid. Hosting, acting, and other forms of entertainment opportunities are like non other in Los Angeles. I believe California is the place where I will live out my dreams.”
Tumblr media
A word from Neno
"Bro I wish you nothing but the best you're a super talented person and I know you will be super successful in anything you put your energy into. God bless you.”
Define your definition of independence?
“My definition of independence is building your own foundation and having the creative freedom that will supply your desired lifestyle.”
Tumblr media
Goals for 2024?
“Continuing to build a loyal team is a major goal this year. I’ve done everything myself and now that I’m working into the industry more, it’s time to put together a solid team that can help broker strategic business deals and partnerships. I’ve thought about getting a manager, but it has to be a trustworthy relationship. They say teamwork makes the dream work and I’m open to it."
“I want to develop my own independent film as well as a reality show. Even though music and sports are my main passions, film was my first love. I wanted to be a writer and director since childhood. I remember writing short stories in my journal that my mother bought me for Christmas in the third grade. I wrote to many legends in the industry asking for advice since the age of 10. Wes Craven, Francis Ford Coppola, and John Carpenter are a few people in the media industry that responded and it meant the world to me! As I got older, I changed as most people do and became more enthralled with music, which led to my beginnings of DJing and my current path now. Since I started acting, it’s sparked my love and creativity for film/television again. It would be dope to collaborate with independent actors and filmmakers because I believe that is where the industry is heading now. There are talented people out there not getting an opportunity due to nepotism and social media clout. That has to stop. While the industry isn’t talent-based like it once was, you can’t give up on your dreams. You have to create your own opportunities, and if I can be the one to give talented people their shot, that would be an honor.”
Tumblr media
Thank You
“I would like to give a big thanks to everyone that has supported my journey so far, it’s only up from here!”

Dagger Squad Headcanons | Part 5
Tumblr media
JAVY "COYOTE" MACHADO
An unashamed Swiftie. He will sing at the top of his lungs and shoot down anyone who wants to make fun of his music choices.
Does he know all the words to "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)"? Does Pete "Maverick" Mitchell love to fly planes? Yeah, stupid question. Next.
Makes the most decadent chocolate chip pancakes you will ever eat.
He ran track all through high school, it was the best time to clear his head and just focus on breathing. He still finds running cathartic because of it.
He 100% agrees with Fanboy on one thing: Chris Pine and his damn iridescent eyes in the 2009 Star Trek movie. Like damn, bro.
Did the Naruto run all through freshmen year of high school. The man was anime obsessed (still is, but more on the keeping it casual for appearances sake side).
Played trumpet all the way from elementary school to the Naval Academy. He was a cool band kid. The kind that was stoic-faced with a pair of cheap aviators on kind of cool.
Was an absolute try hard when it came to chair selection in band - he was constantly challenging the first chair (Dante Williams, the smug bastard) in a back and forth for superiority over the coveted position.
Got his ass absolutely handed to him in the first year at the Academy. Being a plebe was an eye-opening experience, but it made him the aviator he is today.
Yes, his first name is Javier. And no, no one can call him that besides his mom. Not even his aunties or sisters call him anything but Javy.
Look, everybody hits a wild animal at least once during flight training. Usually its smaller things, like birds. Not... you know... coyotes.
Got a tribal arm band tattoo during his final year at the Academy that he definitely doesn't regret whenever he catches a glimpse of it. (He was 22, and a little drunk, and easily pressured by his buddies, okay?)
Who had the most extensive Pokemon card collection in sixth grade? This guy, right here.
When he was sixteen, over the summer, he started working at a warehouse. He was just supposed to be a runner for the guys in car audio sales, but this kid had memorized almost every single spec in all the latest models of the catalog and suddenly he was the main salesman for tech.
Customers loved him, requested him by name, because he knew his stuff and wouldn't try to shove a bad system their way just to turn a bigger profit.
When he was seventeen, he bought a new system and cranked that shit so high that it made the digital sign of the car wash across the street fizzle out into error mode.
Yes, he will defend the classic 90s style systems over the modern stuff. The current market stereos are sleek, don't get him wrong. But the OG systems have the better sound quality.
He totally went cruising through town with his stereo blasting, trying to do the cool guy act. He had decent money from the sales job and didn't mind spending it well on jewelry and accessories for himself (and manga, but shut up).
New Orleans is his hometown, born and raised. But they relocated to Austin in 2005 after, you know... Katrina. He doesn't like to talk about it much.
He'd spend a few weeks a year up in New York with his dad and stepmom, but he always felt more at home down south - though he did love the feel of big city life up there.
Late night car rides are his thing - music playing in the background and no one fucking talking his ear off. If he can't run, he's gonna drive.
He's currently catching up on Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and rewatching Death Note now that he's stateside.
If he ever turns down a carmel mocha frappe, take him to a doctor immediately because something is clearly wrong.

1939 Aerial Photo of the Edgewater area. The lakefront extension and Lake Shore Drive hasn't gotten past Foster Avenue yet. At left of center is Rosehill Cemetery, and to it's east is Senn High School, it's north wing not yet built. To the south of Rosehill is Winnemac Park with Amundsen High and Chappell Elementary. The prominent shadows at the lake front are the towers of the Edgewater Beach Hotel complex. At the upper left is the former Edgewater Golf Club, now Warren Park. At lower right is St Boniface Cemetery, and the Uptown Theater.

Zhangjiajie
I’ve spent the last 4ish days in the rural area of Zhangjiajie, in the mountains of Hunan province in south central China.
I flew in from Beijing on Saturday to Zhangjiajie and then it was an hour drive to the town of Yangjiajie. This town is mainly farmland, lots of roosters crowing, and is very warm and humid. I came here to see Zhangjiajie National Forest, which is famous for its over 3,000 sandstone pillars which are on average about 660 feet tall. They were formed about 350 million years ago due to softer rock around the pillars eroding and falling away. I have truly never seen anything like it, I cannot adequately describe how huge these things were or how amazing it was to see.
The owner of the small hotel I’m staying at, Carol, gave me an extensive run down on how to do a self-guided tour of the park; which I was glad I did instead of doing an official tour. My hotel was only about 300 meters from the park entrance, so I could walk there myself. The park itself despite being very intimidating in its sheer size and the fact that most of it is hundreds of meters in the air, was pretty easy to get around in. There is a system of cable cars to get up the mountain, and a series of buses, bridges, and hiking trails to get around the park from there.
China only very recently opened its borders for the first time in over 3 years, and it is notoriously difficult to get a Chinese visa. While in the bigger cities like Beijing there were definitely more foreigners and expats, and people in general were more used to foreigners, I’ve definitely been noticing a difference in Hunan. I think I have seen less than a dozen foreigners total in the time I’ve been here. I get a lot of stares and kids pointing at me going “哪国人!” (foreigner) I even had a family ask to take my picture with their kid because I was the first foreigner she had seen. Its understandable, not a lot of outsiders have really been traveling through here lately. It is honestly pretty refreshing to travel and be around mainly locals and not the crowd of college aged drunk backpackers that tend to frequent a lot of touristy places around the world.
Don’t get me wrong, people have been so incredibly helpful and accommodating and welcoming the entire time I’ve been here. Every single time I have gotten turned around someone has asked if they could help me. People have been so patient with my broken Chinese. And there is definitely a lot of privilege being a white English speaker that has made getting around a lot easier. I have just definitely been feeling very much like an outsider and it gets a bit wearing to have so many stares every time I do anything and even though its not the same at all it has definitely been very eye opening for what a lot of people experience daily that I haven’t experienced to this extent before.
Anyway. I spent most of Sunday exploring the park. It was really incredible. I just could not comprehend the scale of how big the pillars were. It was quite literally breathtaking and jaw dropping. More than once I stopped dead in my tracks because I just could not believe my eyes. At one point we crossed a natural bridge that had formed between two of the pillars. There were also lots of monkeys and at one point there was a gigantic sculpture to someone in the Communist party with a ton of Communist memorabilia around it, idk what that was all about but it was huge. It was super duper hot and humid but being up high in the mountains helped a lot. Once I got back down to the bottom though I realized I’d gotten sunburned despite it being cloudy. I always forget thats a thing. When I made it back to my hotel I was more sweat than person by that point.
Carol’s mom cooks meals for the hotel, so I ate very well the whole time I was in Zhangjiajie. On Saturday night they were hosting a school group from a nearby university, 20 students, a professor named Jin, and his family. I got to talk with the professor for a while. Apparently he had lived in Germany and Switzerland for over a decade while getting his degrees. He asked me a lot of questions about the US election and he honestly knew more about it than I did. He said people in China pay close attention to this because really the results impact the entire world, which is unfortunately true.
On Monday Carol had again given me extensive instructions for a self guided tour of Tianmen Mountain. This was a bit more complicated. First it involved an hour long car ride to Zhangjiajie, then taking a series of buses to get to the bottom of the mountain and a cable car to get halfway up the mountain. Tianmen Mountain (天门山)translates to Heaven’s Door Mountain. It is called this because of an incredible door like natural arch halfway up the mountain that looks like it is leading to the sky. After taking the cable car halfway up the mountain, I hiked up the famous 999 steps to 天门, Heaven’s Gate. It truly looked like we were climbing stairs directly into the sky.
Once at the top of the staircase, we entered a cave into which was astoundingly built a gigantic escalator which took us up the rest of the way to the top of the mountain. I cannot even imagine how all of this was built.
From there, we were a good 4,500 feet up in the air. I could not comprehend how high up we were. And there was a Burger King and a Bubble Tea restaurant at the top somehow. I had some lunch and them took the long winding path along the cliffside. The path was quite literally hanging off the cliff with a sheer drop of 4,500 feet below. I walked along here for about 3 kilometers, one section of the path was even a glass walk which was honestly terrifying. There were lots of little kids with their families doing the hike as well, and they were absolutely not convinced that the glass was strong enough to hold them, which was completely understandable.
I’ve noticed a lot of people visiting places like this in very fancy clothing, even little kids will wear their best dresses or traditional outfits, because people take a lot of pictures and want to look good in the pictures, even though it is very hot and humid and there is a lot of physical activity.
After hiking I arrived to 天门山死, Tianmenshan Temple. Which, again, was incredible that such a huge temple was built so high up. From there I took something similar to a skilift to take me back to the start of the mountain path, and from there took a cablecar all the way back to town. I was told that this last cablecar was one of the longest cablecars in the world, and it certainly seemed like it. It brought us from 4,500 at the top of the mountain all the way back to the ground in the middle of town 30 minutes later. It was really cool. The line to get in it was pretty intense though. The park tries to limit traffic by only selling 3,000 tickets per hour, which is considered very few tickets given the size of the park, but the problem arises when everyone leaves the park at the same time at the end of the day. This resulted in a very enormous line to get down.
From there I took a shared car to get to my hotel. A lot of people live in very rural areas in the provinces and its tough to make the trek into the city from there so whenever someone drives from the city to town or vice versa they try to fill up the car with people. People generally chip in for gas so its like a rural version of uber without the app. People just roll their window down if they see someone standing on the street or walking down the road and ask if they want a lift.
My window in my room had a gap where it wouldn’t shut all the way so it was letting mosquitoes in. I had managed to block it the last two nights and it wasn’t bad at all but because a rainstorm was incoming there were way more bugs tonight than before. I’m talking thirty to forty mosquitos and other giant bugs I don’t know what they were and don’t really want to know. They’d all gotten through the blocked window and were everywhere which was horrible, so I managed to switch rooms for the rest of my stay.
On Monday it was rainy in the morning and while I could have gone back to Zhangjiajie National Park to see more of it, its an enormous park, I didn’t have it in me and ended up spending the whole day sleeping. My big outing of the day was going with Carol to the grocery store to get snacks. On Tuesday I went to the train station to head to my next stop, Fenghuang, which is also in Hunan province and was only about a 2 hour train ride away.
I’ll update about Fenghuang soon, I’ll be here for about 3 more days.

indirectly tagged by somebody out there for sure :D
i’ve been trying to get back into fanboy, and hopefully start up a more consistent writing/posting groove (definitely planning to finish up ch3 AND write ch4 before i post ch3 tho!!) but here are some other projects that have been Looking At Me
(some) 911 wips (of many) that have me by the throat:
driving west at sunset — a sweet little one shot where eddie and buck are on a drive back to california after helping abuela move back to the texas. partly inspired by the now ancient buddie bingo 2022 bingo prompt “overheard love confession” the two hear all manner of declarations on the road, prompting them to reminisce about the times they too have told someone they were in love
the elasticity of denim — another one shot partly inspired from a bb22 prompt, this one is enclosed space BUT with a twist because they are stuck on top of a rollercoaster in the middle of an accidental date wherein somebody admits to to their attraction just before the coaster is supposed to go down—but doesn’t. also the theme park’s probably cowboy themed
the universe does not scream — an idea a long time coming, the universe herself plays matchmaker and keeps a diary of all the times those two foolfighters firefighters keep ignoring her calls. (this one requires an extensive rewatch in which i take active notes of every relatable quote and moment, which the recent group rewatch has been actively reminding me of)
non-911 wips that have been staring me in the face:
south side (stupid) musical — this playlist is nearing 6 hours long already and i have yet to write more than one episodic intro and one dickensian opening line BUT i cannot stop thinking about it because it is ridiculous and campy and i love it. set between s10&s11 (i think), the gallaghers and company stumble upon a cursed karaoke machine which forces them to burst into song at random moments…….also some weirdos are putting on bootleg high school musical show at a local theatre that they get swept up in.
charlie daltons rules for a successful hookup — i recently uncovered the notebook i spent an entire week in december 2020 furiously plotting this and fell in love with it all over again so i would LOVE to get to this at some point. a university au—bc there is no more perfect au for dead poets society imho—wherein charlie writes a list of rules for himself so he can hookup in college without getting his heart broken (again)
i am so far out of every loop that idk who i interact with that makes things anymore lmao so let me know and i’ll tag you in any future ones i do lol also @enbyeddiediaz hi lizard emojis

Zoan and the Road to Nowhere
Caryn Nicole Wells (South Carolina, June 2023)
“That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die.” - H.P Lovecraft in “The Call of Cthulhu”
Prologue
There was never a time when I didn’t love him.
And if there were such a day, I imagine it would be something like the earth before the sun; dark and probably real, but not enough to deserve a reoccurring thought.
I remember the day we met and how ethereal he was when he spoke; that he did so with a calming grace and smile from his knowing I would never be the same. I remember that day as if it were my every recollection; a day I was blissfully doomed to repeat until a divine revelation is uncovered.
I can’t forget the day we met for its striking singularity, but even more for what happened the day after.
Part One
God is rain.
From birth we are told of men in ages past who claim to have encountered God in the flesh; by fire, and by way of four-legged beasts. But God, in what seems to me a fraught disappointment, rarely makes such announcements save for the tears.
Most of us wish for sun rays, and are more likely than not the cause of the disappointment. But I hate the sun and feel it inferior to the presence of God. And it rained this morning when I most needed a sign, some kind of confirmation in the wake of yesterday’s encounter.
I stood in line at the farmer’s market having picked the best of what had been picked, and was preparing a lovely dinner for one. I’d found an artisan salad in a cookbook I bought but never opened. Like many others, it sat on my shelves wanting to be perused and replaced from either the recipe being beyond my reach, or the ingredients beyond my budget. But I could manage a colorful salad with a simple homemade dressing, accessible enough to invoke a temptation to photograph the plate and post it to my feed.
There wasn’t much there, but we all play the king; sharing the most unimportant bits of our day, as if through the screen and menial things we could change someone else’s life.
And there, in the midst of the green gems and sweet red spheres was a man right where he belonged; with the other gifts that man and woman can make, but only partially. He was brown as damp soil and wore a loose, caramel pant with an off-white linen shirt. He approached the line with a locally-made green tea and a basket of vibrant strawberries.
He’d come all this way for a snack, it seemed, and his eyes matched the mindfulness in their own nearly black color. Like the night sky making a rare appearance during the day, his long fingers danced like tails of stars as he stroked his cleanly shaven chin. He was brilliant as an oak with the majesty of the sea; enough to warrant a commissioned score as he moved through this marriage of men and earth.
I glanced over my shoulder to smile at this stranger and he returned it with a warmth that sent fire to my hands. His cheeks lit with gold as the corners of his mouth turned upwards meet them. And without prompting, he introduced himself as Embry.
He’d pick me up at 10am to take a drive up the mountain, to a lookout he loved for its heaven’s eye view. I’d bring the salad, and he’d bring the berries and picnic blanket.
————————————————
I’d just finished straightening my curls and clipping them back with pearl-like barrettes, four on each clip and one on both sides, when he arrived. I’d slipped into my best jeans and a light grey sweater. I wore a comfy outdoor shoe, but brought a pair of hiking boots just in case. And to further introduce myself, I wore a bright red lip. It wasn’t appropriate for the outdoor venue, but he should know that about myself; that I reserve what is appropriate for formalities and circumstance.
Otherwise, the color was an extension of myself; both brightening the mood and darkening it depending on the happening and opinions of present company.
He rang the bell and I scampered to the door; past the framed photos my friends and I at our graduate school commencement, my parents and brothers at their 50th wedding anniversary, and one recently restored of my grandmother holding me shortly after my birth.
My heels in girlish glee refused to touch the floor underneath as I opened the door to Embry standing on the steps. He was wearing jeans himself, a cream sweater, and a sturdy pair of outdoor shoes. He kissed both of my cheeks as the rain continued to whisper. It was light and timid and not enough to cancel, though he wouldn’t have, he said-
even if the ocean and sky had traded posts and the former fell.
My toffee skin crawled with hope as he offered an arm and walked me to his car.
Part Two
We stopped for coffee at the foot of the gorge; a neighborhood café before the highway retreats to its own. The small cottage had been repurposed, and was hidden at the feet of storytellers; the mountains’ gate made of trees with rings that spiraled to the clouds, their secrets guarded by scales of bark that prided themselves on loyalty.
They waved as we waited behind the car that ordered before us. The rain bathed us all in Appalachian hymns; either a healing or heed, to be determined by the listener. Embry had ordered a jet black coffee. He’d asked for the boldest flavor; its notes of drums and post-colonial celebration. I followed suit and he passed the piping cup with a smile. The rain swooned; falling sideways against my window as we left its presence and found dry land between two walls of green towers on a narrow, two lane road.
We sipped our coffee and spoke over the steam. He’d moved from the city to get away from the noise, having found the liberal agenda more aggressive than he thought; rich, like minds more vicious in their knowing and unwillingness to receive that they don’t, actually. I offered that here was no better, maybe worse. The chosen ones have convinced themselves that they are under attack, from their needing a reason to relive the wars that bred them on this land; the angst being a manifestation of environmental trauma, now deeply coded in their genetic sequencing and causing them to stir without cause.
And there we were, in the middle of the compass, two people without tribes from having too much understanding. He smiled again at the unity, and the rain waned to a coo; ourselves and nature locked in a waltz, in a room with no door and no ceiling.
The heavens were the only way out; our only choice, to climb.
So, we continued.
Part Three
We rode in silence for awhile.
Not for a lack of curiosity, but the conversations had peaked; the basics had been covered after the formal introductions. Any further, and we’d have to explore the depths; trading histories most unsuitable for the circumstance.
It occurred to me that it was all unsuitable; that a different outing would have been trimmed at both ends to accommodate the long kept tradition of the first promenade. I quieted my mind and swore to myself that if this day led to nowhere and we never spoke again, I would not agree to such a trip without knowing someone enough to fill the road.
To shake myself from the slight regret, I focused my attention to the path ahead. Had we been somewhere else, there’d be a door, a roof, and no rain.
Embry drove carefully; his hands precisely placed on the clock. The walls of trees gave way to rock on one side, and the second lane to his right now clung to the mountainside with no barricade. The view was breathtaking, as he said it would be. The earth glimmered beneath the reflective droplets that covered endless miles of majesty. I marveled at nature’s showing off, and Embry gave a smile; saying he was glad to not have canceled for the rain.
Descending clouds kissed the tops of trees, and I wondered what he’d say if we’d been here for some time; if the scene would inspire a memory he hadn’t shared, with all else having been spilt onto our pillowcases that kept the secrets.
We kept climbing to the sound of NPR filling the silence. The radio personalities were reviewing non-fiction book releases. The sterility of the speech made the scene all the more wondrous. The crisp air rushing through our open windows, black birds flying in and out of granite colored clouds, and the sky no longer sobbing but refusing reveal its blue, all smoothed the mountains edge to make us one with our surroundings; belonging truly there and not behind the doors of brick-and-mortar homes.
My eyes were fixed on the passing rock streaming past like film being pulled from its spool. I was lost in the movement when the slide began to slow. I turned to Embry who wore an expression of onslaught dismay. I changed my gaze to the windshield to see what had caused his change in mood; a fresh landslide blocking our path.
Part Four
We sat in silence for awhile, staring at the mass before us; overgrown rocks held together by slathers of drenched clay. A few smaller rocks filled the spaces between the jagged edges of the boulders; this tapestry of soil having been thrown from the loft and doomed to haunt earthen travelers while conducting the rain in a symphony.
It stood there with its arms outstretched from the mountainside to the cliff. The windshield wipers did little to clear the rain’s obstructive rhythms and its falling with a violence as an answer to the mass. We were trapped and unable to seek refuge with those who’d also ventured this way; to see for themselves what’d caused God to cast his benevolence for the one, and then us all.
Melancholic piano oozed over the air vents as NPR moved past the books to present its own argument in the debate of God versus himself; his regretting, quite possibly, his creating the gifted hand.
Embry lifted his own and raised his phone to his eye line. It beeped twice to indicate there being no signal; and with no hope and to still offer aid, I raised my phone that also clued that we were alone on the border of stars and flames.
The grayish blue of the darkened sky forced us to confront our unfamiliarity in the solitude. The sun had moved; once hidden by the storm, it found revival in the tan leather seats that were brighter in the darkness.
—————————————————————————-
The rain’s song ended and Embry began his own; apologizing profusely for the ruined day, but the fault was not his. He was a man, and despite the majesty woven into his skin and the oneiric chromaticism of his baritone, he was still human; ever humbled, and always, by the hand of God. And I said as much in my thanking him for what had been a beautiful day, and still was as it began to retire.
Embry smiled and reached for my hand. I stared at his skin for a moment before placing my palm in his. He clasped my fingers and the blood rushed upwards through my veins and into my quickening heartbeat. If I would be so kind to trust him once more, there was a small town one mile north. There’d be service there, or someone would have a phone. He’d given me no reason not to trust him, and an uphill trek on foot through the mountains to a place I’d never seen made the date all the more wondrous.
If I didn’t return home with the makings of something new, I’d have an amazing story to tell.
I nodded and Emby grabbed the umbrellas from the backseat of his car. He smiled at me once more and we both opened our doors to the mountain.

I nodded and Emby grabbed the umbrellas from the backseat of his car. He smiled at me once more and we both opened our doors to the mountain.
Part Five
We kept to the curb closest to the rocks, leaving chards of ourselves for the road to keep; bits of crusted mud falling off our jeans from having to climb the boulders. The umbrellas were canes as the rain turned to a grave fog. It surrounded us; forcing us closer, clinging to one another at the shoulder.
Embry seemed less a mystery as he continued in his brooding; perhaps on the disappointment or his feeling he'd endangered me, though it mattered not. I'd shared my feelings twice now, with the only option to prove my contentment being far beyond the reach of our status-
a lingering kiss, a suggested longing, a searching gaze, and a smile's finding a new role in intimacy.
But, I didn't know him.
We kept onward as the sun retired to its bath; its lower half behind the pines and its crown still visible for its not having committed to rest. The painted sign led us off the main road and onto gravel. The trees shivered in the frigid air, rustling in the wind that carried Embry's scent to my attention.
The moss was pungent and refined; centered by the evergreens and anchored by the bark. His pulse flew through his body, and mailed his essence by way of his skin. The heat came first; his warmth scorching the earth beneath us, leaving shallow footsteps in the ground. Whatever he'd washed his sweater in was warring with hints of sweat; mixing with the earth and clearing my mind to a trance.
I reached for his arm, and he smiled as he closed his elbow around mine; placing his right hand on his torso as we continued our journey forward. The hill was steep and he offered to stop for rest; completely unaware that he'd caused my dizziness, and not the ascent to the hidden town.
Or such was my assumption, as he'd been so perfectly formal. But I had played the debutante, and he couldn't hear my thoughts, either. The tunnel of aventurine forestry let out at a sign that offered welcome. The town of 'Kindling' was quaint and still, with no cars coming in or out. The sky, now sharing its color with the ocean's tide, covered a gas station with tractors out front, a methodist church, and a few houses lining what seemed a street that led to additional dwellings. The stars were hidden behind the clouds, providing no illumination to the circular landing that looked to be the center of the town.
Dampened gold poured from the windows of the church, coating the grass and stretching its fingers in the direction of the convenience store. Fluorescents picked up where the ember faded to hints, providing us with a heading that we took at a quicker pace; no longer a pair in the throws of leisure, we hurried past the four gas pumps in Kindling.
Embry opened the door of the off-white building, beneath the harsh and flickering lights that spilled over the awning. I stepped inside to the three rows of food, health, and emergency goods guarded by the walls of refrigeration and the drinks they contained. Embry asked if he could buy me something, and I remembered the lunch we'd packed. The day had veered so far from convenient, and here we were standing between potato chips and a cash register. But I was committed if he was, to see this curious day to the end. He smiled and turned to the counter; where no one stood amongst the chewing gum and Advil.
A brown sign by a stack of boxed playing cards instructed us to ring the bell for service. The 'ding' filled the room and Embry retracted his hand; placing it in the curve of my waist, planting it firmly and intentionally as I softened beneath his grasp. Somehow, this moment was more romantic than the drive and hypnotic rain, the two of us standing to the left of Slim Jims and trashy tabloids.
A white man in a white shirt and brown suspenders emerged from nowhere; his belly falling over his belt and his beard over his collar. His eyes were blue like the summer sky and piercing like its heat. He glanced us over and asked if we were buying anything. Embry explained our being stranded and asked if we could use the phone. A woman in a checkered dress joined the man where he stood; leaning into the shelves behind the counter with her lips pursed and eyes just as piercing. He smiled to reveal his true intent, and said they had no phone.
The woman smirked as she stared at me; her eyes then drifting the phone hanging on the wall. I tried my luck, despite my sense, and asked if there were someone in town who could follow us with tractor. The woman lifted her brow and said all of residents were out on holiday. The shopowner asked again if we were buying anything, placing both hands on the counter and leaning forward.
Embry thanked them for their time, and ushered me out of the door. We walked quickly from the store and Embry removed his phone from his pocket. With it now having service, he placed an emergency call.
There'd been another landslide. We'd barely missed as it fell behind us on the way up the mountain. Emergency assists had been dispatched to the lower landslide, but it would take a few hours to remove it. There was a town called Kindling in our vicinity and we were advised to seek shelter there, or work with the locals who had experience with this kind of thing; keeping tractors on hand to clear the road for their comings and goings.
We thanked the dispatcher and headed silently towards the path, past the rows of tractors and a church full of people singing:
"Oh, to grace how great a debtor; daily I'm constrained to be.
Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The stars had won their war with the clouds by the time we returned to the vehicle. Embry opened my door, and I turned to him in the gap. I searched his eyes for shared emotion, though I couldn't identify my own. He answered not my current thought, but the one I'd had from earlier; taking me into his arms and pressing his lips into mine. We lingered for a moment before releasing into a wordless, wrapped embrace; one we both desperately needed.
We pulled away and I lowered myself into the car. He gently closed the door and walked to the driver's side.
Part Six
We sat facing the barrier to the day Embry had planned; his head leaning into the rest and his eyes closed in silence. We held hands over the center console; intertwined, I stroked his index finger with my own. His breath slowed and his shoulders climbed down from their height. He opened his eyes and turned to me. I returned the moment, saying nothing.
We still hadn't spoken, which said more than words; with neither of us forcing a love language that wasn't ours, transferring all that would be said through the grooves of our tangled fingers. The air vents pelted us with frigid breath; icing the heat and bringing us both back to reality.
He closed his eyes, opened them again, and told me to get out of the car. He was going to try to turn it around, and thought I should stand by the rocks. I mimicked his stance, leaning my head back into the rest. I copied his deep and solemn breath, and said I preferred to stay; that I valued his life as he did mine, and he'd be more careful with me present.
He postured to object, but saw the certainty in my eyes. He kissed my hand, and then my forehead before turning towards the wheel. I buckled my seatbelt and quickly let go of the strap. I wasn't going to display distrust; and he did the same, but for confidence's sake. Evenly matched, the two of us reset our seats. Embry put the car in reverse and drove backwards; placing several feet between ourselves and the landslide.
He drove forward towards the mass and turned the wheel to the left. The headlight on my side met the center of the rocks as Embry put the car in reverse again, driving us back towards the mountain. He drew a deep breath and crept slowly forward; my headlight meeting the corner of the landslide, the wheel on Embry's side hanging slightly over the cliff.
He put the car in reverse a third time, and we went back towards the mountain; with the reflection of the break lights bouncing off the rocks and glaring into the rearview mirror.
Embry took a deep breath, lifted his gaze to the windshield, and put the car in drive. He crept forward as far as we could go, but not far enough to make a turn. He placed the car back in reverse and tapped gently on the gas, but the car jolted back and sent us flying into the mountain. We bounced off the rock and the car yanked forward, with both front wheels now hanging over the edge of the cliff.
I caught a glimpse of the ground from glory before Embry snatched the gear in reverse, and slammed his feet on the gas. The car lurched forward and Embry threw his right arm across my chest before hitting the gas again.
The back tires squealed before dragging us back onto the road. Embry threw both hands on the wheel, turning frantically to straighten us into the leaving lane.
We pulled a few feet down the mountain and Embry stopped the car. He stared straight forward for a moment, before throwing off his seatbelt, opening the door, and getting out. He doubled over and heaved; I leapt from my seat to join him. I placed one hand on his back and the other on my chest, still trying to recover my own senses after our almost certain free-fall.
Embry straightened and took another breath before turning to me. He grabbed my waist and tugged me into his chest. I responded with two arms around his neck, and he kissed me with a fierceness that stole my last remaining breath. I gave it freely and gave into the loss; feeling my feet taking a few steps towards the mountain. With my back pressing into the rock, Embry grabbed both of my arms and pinned my wrists to one another above my head.
The makings of gems dug into my skin as the embrace continued; bringing us back from the corner of life and death, and back to where we'd started, but on more familiar ground.
He released my arms and then my lips; our foreheads pressed together as we exchanged proximity's breath. And we stayed there for a minute, maybe an hour; with either being less than the eternity of the wheels' spinning over the edge of the cliff.
----------------------------------------------------------------
We pulled into my driveway and sat silently, again. Embry turned off the car and we listened to the cicadas' invisible melodies. He grabbed my hand and stroked my knuckles with his thumb. He offered to sit for as long as I pleased. I voiced my thought that he we should decompress in our homes; wash away the day and sleep it off, the scent of pine and panic.
He agreed and opened his car door before making his way to mine. He walked me to the door, and I turned the key to open it before turning back to Embry. He took both of my hands in his and planted a kiss on my lips, then my forehead again.
I told him to drive safely and he laughed at the thought. He waved from the walk, and stopped midway; turning back to me.
There'd be sun tomorrow and no change of rain. He'd like, if I was willing, to try the trip a second time.
I smiled and nodded.
He'd pick me up at 10.

The Victoria & Alfred Hotel is a Well-Chosen Stay
The Victoria & Alfred Hotel arguably has the best hotel location in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, making it a great choice for a holiday or weekend in the city, writes Lorraine Kearney. ALSO SEE: Immigration training underway for City of Cape Town staff to reduce airport queue waiting times Valet parking. That’s what greets you as you drive up to the Victoria & Alfred Hotel in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. It’s very welcome: the parking garage is a walk away and trudging past the Time Out Market suitcase in hand is not how you’d want your stay to begin, or end. But do make a mental note of the market, because a meal there has become almost a requirement. Good thing then that the Victoria & Alfred Hotel is just next door, divided only by the bronze statues of South Africa’s four Nobel Peace laureates. The little open courtyard has become a favourite haunt of street performers. To the hotel, where a seamless check-in process gets you up to your room in double-quick time. All the better to unpack and throw yourself into what’s on offer. Victoria & Alfred Rooms On offer are 94 very comfortable rooms – 34 are mountain-facing (and recommended!), 34 are piazza facing (inviting you right into the Waterfront action), and there are 26 loft rooms. These last are the hotel’s entry-level accommodations, but even so, they are comfortable, bright and airy, with all the amenities – mini bar, tea and coffee station, smart TV, hairdryer, full en-suite and full service. It’s just a view they lack, although their loft windows are good for a night sky experience. All the rooms come with all the amenities, as well as safes for valuables, speedy Wi-Fi and USB plugs. And the staff are friendly, efficient and very accommodating. The Victoria & Alfred Hotel was the first hotel in the early days of developing the Waterfront, taking a gamble on the future. (A gamble that has paid off immensely, we might add.)It opened in 1990, as the vision for a revitalised mixed-use docklands area in central Cape Town was starting to become a reality. These days, with its trendy restaurants, shops, accommodations and entertainment, the V&A Waterfront is a world-renowned tourist attraction and the most visited site in South Africa. And the Victoria & Alfred Hotel is at its centre. Location, location, location. ALSO SEE: Tourism Marketing Conference comes to Cape Town in August Dining at the Victoria & Alfred Dining is done at the restaurant Ginja, which does a filling breakfast of harvest table, hot breakfast or the full English, lunch and dinner. Lunch and dinner can be booked for diners not staying at the hotel, and there is a fabulous, old school Sunday brunch from noon til 4pm for just R395 pp. Ginja has a terrace for warm days and nights facing on to the yacht mole and the mountain, and Native, the coffee kiosk, opens on to the courtyard leading to the Time Out Market. Native also sells sandwiches and pastries – the Biscoff doughnuts are brilliant. Off reception, the hotel opens into the swish Alfred Mall. Pool, Gym and Spa Victoria & Alfred Hotel guests also have free use of the swimming pool at Dock House Boutique Hotel, the gym and the Sanctuary Signature Spa across the road. The hotel was originally the North Quay Warehouse, built in 1904, and the steel structures have been incorporated into the hotel’s designs. Extensive renovations and refurbishments were completed earlier this year, in a minimalist, modern style featuring neutral tones, letting the views do all the talking.
