Hiii, you said I can come to you for Dutch questions, right? Well, I have a question. I couldn't make sense of the difference between geen and niet, so I went looking everywhere I could, and I saw this explanation on the Dutch learning subreddit

And it almost makes sense to me. I was wondering if you might be able to explain it in a different way and see if that clicks? Or just expand on it or something? Sorry if I'm being difficult here lol

Yes! I can try! (Giddy giddy happy) (I know nothing of the official rules of verbs and nouns etc)

My first thought was 'geen' is more like 'none' and 'niet' is a direct negative. Though this is not a direct translation

If I think about it a bit more, 'geen' indicates a possesion. 'Niet' indicates an action/ verb/ werkwoord

Ik heb geen zin* - I don't want to do this - I have no 'want'

Ik heb geen appels - I don't have any apples - I have no apples

Ik heb geen rijbewijs - I don't have a drivers license - I have no driverslicense

All of these are things you can 'have' objects and feelings and emotions. It also stretches forth in wants and needs

Ik wil geen appels

Ik wil geen zin hebben om te gaan- I don't want to want to go - I want no want have to² go. (It's a weird sentence, but that’s the only way I could keep the pattern)

Ik wil geen rijbewijs

Ik heb geen appels nodig*²

Ik heb geen zin nodig - I don't need to want - I have no want need (as in 'I don't need to want to do a thing to be able to do it or smt)

Ik heb geen rijbewijs nodig

All of these are ways of possesing, in various stadia. You 'posses' the feeling of wanting, you 'posses' the apples, you 'posses' the driverslicense. (Or well, you don't, bc you don't need it, want it etc) but they are all possible and potential possesions.

'Niet' indicates a feeling, ethics or werkwoord (verb)

Ik slaap niet - I don't sleep

Ik eet niet - I don't eat

Ik werk niet - I don't work

These are all actions you are (not) completing. They're verbs

Ik wil niet dat jij dat doet - I don't want you to do that

Ik vind dat niet leuk - I don't enjoy that - I find that not fun

Ik kan hem niet uitstaan - I can't stand him

These are all in relation to someone else or yourself. They involve people

Het gaat niet goed - it doesn't go well*³

Dat is niet ethisch - that isn't ethical

Dat is niet fijn - that is not nice

These all indicate mood and ethics. Good and bad

If I google it online in Dutch it will tell me that 'Geen' is used for indefinitve substantive, but I don’t know what that means.

* 'zin hebben' always goes together as a pair. 'Zin' indicates the wanting of. 'Ik heb zin in appels' - 'i want apples/I crave apples.

*² nodig is a literal translation of 'needy'. Nood = emergency or need, so nodig means 'in need' saying 'ik heb dat niet nodig' means 'I don't need that' - I have that no need(y)'

*³ 'het gaat niet goed' can both indicate a person and an action. 'Hoe gaat het met je knutselproject? -> Het gaat (niet zo) goed' - How is your craft project going? -> it is (not) going (so) well

'Hoe gaat het met Emma? -> Het gaat (niet zo) goed' - How is Emma doing? -> She's (not) doing (so) great - How goes it with Emma? -> It goes (not so) well
