preview
A lot of things were unexpected that day.
First, the fact that Lewis was late to pick up his niece, but when he got there she wasn’t throwing a tantrum, quite the opposite. When she saw him she saw him, she came running through the school’s entrance with the biggest smile on her face when just earlier that week she made a fuss to go to class every morning – before and after getting there.
The second was the smallest boy who was right behind her. His backpack swung from side to side, while Wendy ran up front turning every few seconds to giggle at him.
And just when Lewis thought those were the only two unexcepted things, you walked out of the door carrying a few books in your hands and a big bag on your shoulder, calling for Wendy and the smallest boy.
“Uncle Lew!!!” His niece screamed before barreling into his legs and hugging him. He chuckled, bending down to kiss her mop of curls. “Have you met Leo?”
“I don’t think so,” he shook his head just as the boy finally reached them.
The kid’s version of a black Jordan and the styled curly hair made Lewis smile, that boy appeared to be around five but was already starring a fashion sense that a few older people hadn’t.
“Leo, you’ll give me a heart attack one of these days. You can’t go out running like this, honey,” your voice carried a serious but sweet tone simultaneously.
Lewis’ eyes found you standing a few feet away, curly hair clipped away from your face by a few strands, a pencil skirt, and a cream blouse. The folder and books in your arms gave him a hint of what you were doing there, and his silent guess turned out to be true when Wendy turned with a toothless grin and introduced you: “This is Miss Yn, our new teacher!” She took a step to stand beside you looking up with a beaming face that reflected yours. “And this is Leonard, her son, my new classmate. They’re new here, can we introduce the city to them like we did with Jackie and Uncle Toto? Also, can we have playdates later? Can we go to the park? Can we–”
****
“Mamma, I don’t wanna eat,” Leo held his hands behind his back giving you his best puppy eyes and you chuckled.
“How about you try a few bites and then go play with Dee, huh?”
“Yeah, champ, you gotta make your body strong so you can run as fast as you can,” Lewis tried, already cutting a sandwich in half for Wendy. “Have you ever tried vegan sandwiches?” He asked and Leo shook his head.
“I don’t like lettuce, mamma does though,” he shared, pointing his small finger at you.
“What do you mean you don’t like lettuce? Lettuce is exactly what makes us run even faster, it gives us tons of energy!”
“It does?” the curly-haired boy asked, hands now on the side of his body and curious eyes watching the food in Lewis’ hands.
“Yeah, I eat it all the time so I can drive my car in endless circles.”
You smiled watching the interaction.
“How about you have a bite? You don’t have to eat it all, just a bite. But I bet you will want to finish it. This one has so many things that make us bigger and stronger.”
“Strong like you?” his big brown eyes now looking at Lewis’ biceps, and you chuckled at your kid's face when the driver curled his arms and flexed his muscles.
“Yeah, strong just like me!”
****
“They truly made a bond in a short time, huh?” You commented.
“Guess we’ll be seeing each other a lot more often,” Lewis bumped your shoulder with his and you smiled. You wouldn’t lie that the prospect of interacting with him more than you did the last week wasn’t a bad thing at all.
“I’m not opposed to that.”
“Neither am I.”

Mechanical - Jordan Parrish
Fandom(s): Teen Wolf
Wordcount: 1041
Warning(s): Fluff?, Kisses,
Summary: Just her luck, huh?
The stars are shining overhead, wind blowing crisp leafs over the ground, a flickering streetlight gleams over her as she mutters a litany of curses as she drops the wrench in her hand at the sharp jolt of electricity that zaps her hand. Hopping back, she shoves her hand into her mouth, laving over the shock with her tongue, pausing to watch the purple webbing pattern that is spread across the side of her hand quickly fade, sighing as she leans heavily against the side of her car.
"Please, Gods and Goddesses above. Please. If you get me out of this, I'll be good. I won't pick on Stiles anymore, I-I'll donate all my clothes to charity. I'll... I don't know what else, but I'll do it!" The response she gets is a distant rumble, before lightning strikes across the sky, and nonexistent clouds appear, only breaking open to pour rain down on her. "Seriously?!" A soft sob escapes her mouth, eyes falling shut as rain pounds on her, coating her, soaking her, making her shake. Slamming the hood shut, she kicks the wheel of her broken down, beat up old Toyota, making it squeak, before she climbs into the driver's side, slamming the door as she shakes out her hair, wrenching as much water out of it as she can, before she reaches over to grab her phone, scrolling through her contacts.
Stiles would recommend duct tape, and she's pretty sure it wouldn't help in this context. Her dad? No, he's been pulling doubles at the station, and is probably sleeping at the dinner table, pouring over files for answers to The Beast. Lydia would come give her a ride, but she really should be resting after Einchen House. Scott? No, that's just asking for trouble right now. Her finger hovers over a familiar number, of someone that her dad disapproved of her befriending, to the point where he threatened to demote the deputy when he found her laughing as she lounged against his desk. It seemed like everyone had driven a wedge between the two of them.
A strike of lightning in the distances has her jump, finger falling on the call button before she realizes it, making her wince as she hesitantly raises the phone to her ear. Please don't pick up. Please don't pick up. She thinks, but the phone barely rings for a second time, before it's picked up with tired "Hullo?" making her flinch. Shit!
"H-Hey, Parrish." He murmurs her name in confusion, and she lets out a weak laugh. "Yeah, uh, I'm sorry... I didn't know who else to call."
"What's going on? Is something wrong?"
"No! No. I uh..." Her head falls against her steering wheel, clenching her eyes shut as a rumble of thunder booms in the distance. "My car won't start." She laughs breathlessly.
"What?! Where are you? I'm coming to get you." He says, and she hears the shuffle of clothes, and the clink of a belt, making her frown.
"Did I wake you?"
"No. Don't worry about it." He answers, before there is a clank of a door latching, and she grips her steering wheel with one hand, muttering a curse directed at herself. "Hey! No berating yourself. Now, tell me where you are." She rattles off the street name, and Parrish repeats it for confirmation. "I'm not far now..."
"Kay." She feels a sudden tightness in her throat.
"You okay? Is there something wrong?" He asks, his kindness making guilt weigh in her chest.
"N-No. I-It's nothing." She answers, and jumps when there is a knock on her window, making her look over to see Jordan standing there, phone in hand, covered by his deputy jacket. She pops open the door as they both hang up, rain falling around them as he lifts his jacket, covering her as well as she slams the door to her car shut with a loud metallic creak.
"I'll call you a tow tomorrow, for now we should get you home. Where it's safe." She nods, feeling that tightness in her chest and throat grow, before she follows close beside him as he guides her to his car, catching her as she trips over her own feet, touch lingering as she looks up at him.
"...thanks." She murmurs, turning away as he opens the door, covering her as she climbs in. He's at his side, climbing into the car as she buckles up, freezing as she looks up, and he's mere inches from her face, looking at her. The air is thick with awkwardness, charged with an electrical current that always seems to linger between them. "Thank you, Jordan... for coming to get me."
"You don't need to thank me. I'll always come for you." She feels heat flood her face at his promise, his words making her breath catch in her chest. He murmurs her name, and she reaches down, grabbing his hand as she rests her forehead against his own, absorbing his presence as much as she can. "I've missed you."
"Me too." She laughs softly. "Goddess above, I've missed you." She shakes her head, leaning back to look into his green eyes. "You know that I wasn't ignoring or avoiding you by choice, right?"
"I know. Sheriff Stilinksi threatened me, if I didn't stay away, that I'd know what the barrel of his gun would look like." She blinks, shocked by the fact that her father would threaten him like that.
"Yet, you still came." She murmurs, and Parrish grins softly, reaching up to wick away a drop of rain from her cheek.
"You're worth it." His words light a fire with her, and she reaches across the center console, hands grasping his face, before she is kissing him, the heat of his skin making her body flush, especially when one of his hands cups her waist, tucking up under her shirt, the other cupping her cheek, kissing her back in return. "So worth it." He murmurs, before kissing her again.
"Definitely."

The frontman of the band Joker Out, Bojan Cvjetićanin, is a candidate for Delo's Personality of the Year. The energetic singer and talented lyricist remains grounded despite his popularity.
With Joker Out, Cvjetićanin has achieved incredible popularity on the European music scene, surpassing any other Slovenian pop or rock band to date. They've exceeded their own dreams and broken language barriers, with fans singing along in Slovenian wherever they perform, from Dublin to Milan and Oslo. As an energetic singer and gifted songwriter, Bojan represents a voice for the young generation, which is declaring that their time is coming: The game of hatred is your thing, thank you very much, don't count on us.
The 25-year-old musician, along with his bandmates Jure Maček, Kris Guštin, Jan Peteh, and Nace Jordan, has risen to stardom in just over two years while staying firmly grounded. "Sometimes even we ask ourselves how we manage it. We talk a lot with our producer Žare Pak, who we could call our sixth member. I think I, as well as the others in the band, have normal life habits. None of us is prone to any excesses, so we don't have to hold ourselves back in that sense. I live the way I have always lived, basically," says Bojan Cvjetićanin, who recently told Vikend magazine that he is glad that sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll are not the guiding principles of their band. Joker Out is driven forward primarily by the enjoyment of performing on stage, meeting new people, and creativity.
What Bojan enjoys writing about the most is love, and he uses this emotion to describe the relationships within the group, too. "It's a partnership between five people, which is very complex. We spend a lot of time together, know each other well, and have learned when not to push certain buttons or when to offer someone a shoulder—not to cry on, but to vent." However, he also says there is nothing wrong with men showing emotions.
We briefly met with Bojan at Kino Šiška the day after returning from a concert in Zagreb and before heading to Maribor and Vienna, where Joker Out had two more sold-out concerts. That evening, when he could have taken a breather, Bojan also took the time to perform with the Police Orchestra at a concert titled Slovenia Breathes 0.0, because he likes to support causes he finds important.
One such cause was a concert aimed at improving the treatment of women with gynecological cancer. Cvjetićanin is compelling on stage and also when he talks about always adhering to the 0.0 rule behind the wheel. "My parents instilled in me the mindset that you don’t want to carry the weight of something going wrong because of one beer. I always called a taxi since I know people who have been deeply affected by the reckless actions of drunk drivers."
Life Motto: Do what you believe in, and trust the people you love.
The verse written in the introduction is from their hit 'Carpe Diem', with which they performed at Eurovision, and the song contains another meaningful thought: "We'll dance all night long/We'll love each other and play/As if we'll be gone tomorrow" Young people face an uncertain future, and Bojan says his generation has many worries due to rapid changes.
"We are confronted with many unresolved questions, more than ever before. They create unease, anxiety, and I think all of this can be felt. On the other hand, young people are treated as fully responsible global citizens, yet youth is often mentioned in a derogatory sense, as if it’s not yet our time to get involved in what's happening and we should just wait a little longer."
He never considered building a career outside Slovenia:"I always imagined a musician's life in the style of Tomi Meglič. Tomi was my alpha and omega. Only later, when I started writing in my mother tongue, Serbian, I began to think about the possibility of performing in the former Yugoslav region. As a teenager, my dreams were limited to Slovenia, and even that would've been more than enough for me," says the musician, who's grateful for the safety and many other aspects of living in Slovenia.
However, it seems that audiences abroad want to keep listening to them, and on their brand-new album 'Souvenir Pop', Bojan sings in three languages: Slovenian, Serbian, and English.

I met Bojan Cvjetićanin five or six years ago when we were working on the song 'Gola'. For about three months, I put him through a vocal "torture", but I knew we could make something out of this boy. He is completely devoted to music, it’s in his blood, and he’s a great creator.
I see him the way most people who like him see him: he doesn’t act. He’d rather focus on discovering himself than playing a role. He's a very good person and also very intelligent. His charisma is connected to this.
Sometimes I tell him: Lucky you, whatever you do, even if it's wrong, you’ll fix it with this smile of yours. His smile is a powerful weapon. What’s amazing about Bojan is that he can make everyone feel like he has a personal relationship with them. When he’s on stage, everyone in the audience feels like he’s singing just for them. But that’s who he is. And because of people like Bojan, I’m happy to be in this profession.

Sunsets and footballers (Part 37)
Jordan Nobbs x Leah Williamson Mini (1)
Masterlist (other parts here)
((**Your second chapter of the night, a more detailed look into the Jordan and Leah interaction...**))
“She loves you, Dory. Just be patient and be honest with what you need, okay? I’m a phone call away.”
Jordan’s arms tightened around her friend and she nodded. She didn’t want her to go.
“Also, if she doesn’t sleep in your bed, she’s more than welcome to sleep in mine.”
Jordan couldn’t help but scoff and slap her arm as she pulled away. Of course she wouldn’t have sex with Leah tonight. She wasn’t even sure if she’d let her come back into their home tonight.
“What? You have needs.”
YFN gave her a reassuring smile and Jordan returned it before she jumped back into the driver’s seat. She watched the two outside hugging and the sight that YFN had also become important to Leah wasn’t missed by her. She saw YFN say something to Leah, and she knew immediately that it was good, reassuring advice. She was always that person. The one you felt safe opening up to and getting advice from. It was crazy to think they hadn’t met long ago; she felt like she’d known her forever.
They exchanged a few more pleasantries before Leah got back into the car. The silence was loud. Jordan was so nervous around Leah all the time, and she found it hard to think. Luckily for her, all she needed to do was to think about the hurt she’d caused, and it helped her to shut down those surface level feelings off. She was just driving home, as if Leah wasn’t even there.
She was almost home, a fully twenty minutes of silence, when Leah’s hand was carefully placed on Jordan’s thigh, near her knee. Jordan sucked in a breath. It wasn’t sexual or flirting, she knew that. It was just the reassurance she craved. For what? She had no clue. But she didn’t move her hand and after a while, she could see Leah relaxing at the knowledge of this.
Jordan pulled into the driveway near Leah’s black Mercedes and turned the car off. Still, silence. Jordan refused to speak. She knew it wasn’t very mature, but she didn’t care. Captain Leah broke first, of course.
“Can I come inside?” She asked gently, removing her hand.
Jordan thought about it as she stared over the dash. They were two very soft, emotional people. If Leah came inside, that would be a lot of emotion and she knew she wouldn’t be able to stop it. Jordan felt more vulnerable at night, and without YFN there to keep things civil, she was worried.
“Please?” Leah whispered. It was so soft, so vulnerable and…pleading…that Jordan turned to look at her. She didn't realise how close she’d been to tears and blinked those away.
Leah had her head back against the seat and she was looking at Jordan as if she’d been staring at her for the entire car ride. She probably had. Jordan had been too focussed on anything else. Right now she looked at Leah and she’d never seen that expression before. It was pain and longing and guilt. So much guilt.
“Okay.” Jordan said, not even realising she’d said it.
They walked up to the entrance, Jordan’s pace slow and Leah’s close behind her. She could feel her watching her every move. She took her key out and tried to get it into the keyhole, her hand shaking with built up emotion. Leah appeared over her shoulder, careful not to touch her beyond her larger hand which took Jordan’s hand softly and guided it to the keyhole.
“Thanks…” She said without thinking about it. They entered and Blu was bounding towards them then, aiming straight at Leah. She grinned and picked him up, pulling him into his favourite position against her chest with one arm. He licked her face. He missed her. Jordan couldn’t help but look at them cuddling and remember how cute they were together. Leah noticed her looking.
“I miss him a lot.”
“I think he misses you too.” She admitted and led the way to the couch. She let Leah sit first, placing Blu in his bed before she did, and then Jordan sat at the opposite end of the couch just like YFN had suggested. Being too close to Leah would blind her with her own emotions.
“I’m sorry.” Leah said, holding Jordan’s eyes. “I’m so, so sorry. There’s no apology I can give that will make up for this, I know that. But please hear me out…”
Jordan nodded, letting her continue.
“I messed up, Jord. I was weak and worse than that, a coward. I let my cowardice dictate our relationship and end it. The one thing I didn’t want to do was hurt you, and I let my ego, my pride, my weakness drive you away and try to justify it in my own head as the right thing to do when it wasn’t. It wasn’t right for you or for me. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I love you. I miss you. I want you. Whatever I have to do, I will. I want you, Jordan. There’s this…empty space in my world that only you can fill.”
“You left,” Jordan croaked, unsure how she’d even managed to say that. “You’ll leave me again.”
Leah must have seen some hope in that sentence because she moved closer to Jordan and gently took one of her hands in her own. “I won’t. I was weak, I’m not now. I’d never allow myself to try and win you back if I thought I had any chance of doing it again. I won’t, I promise. And I’ll spend the rest of my life making up for this if I have to.”
She was saying all the right things. Jordan felt herself moving closer to Leah and Leah noticed, her eyes darting to her lips and back to her eyes. That was enough for Jordan to lose her last shred of control and lean forward with intention. With an unbelieving expression, Leah met her in the middle and their lips connected. She was soft, and tasted like that cherry lipstick of hers, just like Jordan remembered. Leah always gave Jordan her bottom lip when they kissed for many reasons, but mainly: it was bigger, and she was usually a lot shorter.
Leah tilted her head into the kiss, her tongue finding Jordans. Jordan moaned into her mouth and moved forward, Leah encouraging her body to manoeuvre on top of her.
Leah. Leah. Leah. She’d never gotten the chance for closure with Leah, and so she couldn't help how desperate she was now to feel a piece of what she’d felt when they were together.
Jordan’s hands slid their way into Leah’s blonde hair and she tilted her head, pushing herself against her.
“Jordan,” Leah moaned and her hands wandered like she was memorising her.
Jordan knew she was crying, but she took it as overwhelming emotions. She needed Leah. Now.
She paused their mouths for a split second to look at Leah. Her eyes were dark and her lust was reflected there along with multiple other emotions. Leah must have seen Jordan’s intentions in her eyes.
“Are you sure?” She whispered.
Jordan nodded her forehead against Leah’s and the Captain paused for a few seconds before her emotions took control. Suddenly Jordan was on her back and Leah was on top, both helping to drag the clothes off of each other.
“Jordan,” Leah moaned again as Jordan sucked on her nipple while they were wriggling her pants down. “I love you. I miss you.” She spoke like a chant.
Their hands roamed, reintroducing themselves with their bodies and they allowed their mouths to wander also. Jordan’s legs wrapped about Leah’s waist as she rocked them to a rhythm, their tongues fighting each other and Jordan’s hands messing Leah’s hair and scraping down her back. Leah let herself wander, her mouth kissing and nipping down Jordan’s neck to each nipple, giving them equal attention before carrying on down her abdomen and back up to her mouth. Leah’s hand slid down between them and paused outside Jordan’s core.
“Are you sure?” She asked again, not noticing Jordan’s tears.
Jordan nodded against her and Leah’s fingers entered softly, knowing exactly what Jordan liked. She slid one finger inside her tantalisingly slow as her palm gave pressure and stimulation to her clit. Jordan moaned she rode her hand with her hips rolling into her again and again. They picked up a nice pace and it was terrifying to Jordan just how natural it all felt. Like no time had passed. Leah’s desperation to have her made Jordan’s first orgasm come quicker than usual, her back arching as she gave into Leah’s stimulation. Leah pressed a proud kiss to her jaw before moving down her body, leaving kisses and nips along the way until she was settled between Jordan’s legs. She knew she needed to ride this high before Jordan’s little body had decided it had had enough excitement for the night. She kissed the insides of her thighs, missing those like crazy until she found Jordan’s heat with her mouth. She didn’t do her long, dragged-out foreplay. They were too desperate for that. Instead, she went straight in, her tongue licking the length of Jordan, from hole to clit before settling on her clit for a while. Jordan whimpered, her body reacting. She looked down at the determined blonde between her legs and gripped that hair with two hands, encouraging Leah. Though she needed no encouragement, she was desperate to taste her, to feel her, to do anything to make Jordan happy. Leah shivered at Jordan’s second orgasm and happiness built inside her on top of that guilt and shame. She dragged herself back up Jordan’s body and this time they fucked each other at the same time. Leah was unsure at first but then accepted the love Jordan was giving her. By then end of Jordan’s third and Leah’s first, they were upright on the couch, Jordan riding Leah’s fingers desperately, her hands clinging onto Leah. Leah loved this. Every single second she felt herself getting happier and tension releasing. Jordan was here and allowing this. She could get Jordan back. The sounds of her breathy moans and whimpers dragged life into her.
“Leah,” Jordan gasped as she neared her edge again. Leah almost froze. Almost. Jordan moaned her name.
Jordan’s riding became erratic as she chased that fourth high, her body locking up and shuddering, her head falling to Leah’s shoulder and she shuddered and tensed. Eventually the tension calmed but the shuddering didn’t. It took longer than it should have for Leah to realise Jordan was crying.
“No, no no no, Jord,” she stressed as Jordan moved away from her, grabbing her clothes from the ground.
Leah tried to move towards her but Jordan couldn't deal with it.
“Get out.” She said as normally as she could while she was crying.
“Jord, please no. Tell me what’s wrong, I can fix it.” Leah begged. Jordan picked up her clothes and tossed them onto Leah’s lap while she continued to dress herself. Leah began to dress herself. It seemed the most appropriate thing. “Please don’t do this Jordan.”
Jordan was fully clothed then and tracking towards the front door. Leah was pulling her shirt over her head as she scrambled behind her.
“Please, Jordan!” She begged, landing on her knees in front of her. She flinched visibly as her ACL knee hit the tiles, sharp pain shooting up her leg. “Please talk to me. Don’t do this.” And then softer, “Not after that.”
“I can’t,” Jordan cried. “I’m sorry Leah, I’m sorry but I can’t.”
Jordan wasn’t lying. She couldn’t. She was overwhelmed with feelings too difficult to understand. One minute she was nervous; the next she was in pure ecstasy with Leah, their bodies moving together as they used to just a little more desperate; the next she was terrified history would repeat itself. Her friends had only just helped her past her deepest pain.
Jordan reached the front door and opened it, her tears free flowing. She continued to wipe with the cuff of her jumper but couldn’t seem to keep up.
“Please go.” She begged.
Leah inhaled sharply, her own tears starting. She sobbed on her knees on the floor.
“But I love you.”
“Please.” She begged again. She needed to be far away from her so she wouldn’t be hurt again.
Leah stood, as strong as she could, and walked towards the door, exiting before turning back to Jordan.
“Please tell me why. Tell me anything. Just say anything.”
Jordan hadn’t met her eyes until then. Leah almost collapsed at the look of fear and hurt reflected in them. Leah still didn't understand. Had she hurt her during sex? Did she regret it? Was she with someone else and made a mistake?
“I can’t handle you leaving me again.”
Leah’s stomach hit the floor. Her mistake now visible as an insecurity so deeply rooted in Jordan.
Jordan had to look away before Leah’s fallen expression broke her. She closed the door and Leah turned, stumbling down the steps until she stopped and vomited into the garden.

When U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly appointed special envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, paid his first visit to Damascus on May 29, he flew into the country on U.S. military helicopters from Jordan. He was accompanied by two State Department staff members but was most closely flanked by the U.S. military’s counter-Islamic State coalition leaders—Maj. Gen. Kevin Leahy and Brig. Gen. Michael Brooks.
Those optics were telling. While Barrack has justifiably trumpeted the extraordinary diplomatic and economic openings provided to Syria by the Trump administration in recent weeks, the Islamic State challenge arguably remains the dominant factor still guiding U.S. policy planning around Syria and the United States’ role in its future.
With more than half a century of Assad family rule now a thing of the past, the advent of a new Syria presents a genuinely historic opportunity to foster a more peaceful, stable, and integrated Middle East region. But this optimistic vision of Syria’s integration and prosperity poses an existential challenge to a malign actor such as the Islamic State, which thrives in chaos and whose agenda is to fuel division and conflict through terror. That explains why, in recent weeks, the Islamic State has been determined to challenge and undermine Syria’s newfound cause for hope.
Initially, the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024 triggered a near complete Islamic State collapse, with the group going from a yearlong resurgence in 2024 in which it conducted an average of 59 attacks per month to being responsible for just two attacks in January 2025.
This sudden decline was primarily the result of the group losing its longtime safe-haven in Syria’s central desert, where Assad regime forces had proved to be unwilling and unable to challenge its desert-based insurgency. Within hours of Assad’s fall, U.S. aircraft took to Syria’s skies and hit at least 75 Islamic State facilities in that central desert region, crippling the group’s network of safe houses, training camps, and weapons stores. The group almost certainly also suffered a temporary crisis of disorientation, as it had been the Assad regime’s notorious brutality, corruption, and incompetence that had been the Islamic State’s most significant driver of recruitment and justification for attacks.
In the months since, the Islamic State has gradually regained its feet, conducting nine attacks in in February, 19 in March, 28 in April, and 38 in May. Of the 96 attacks that the group has conducted so far this year, 90 of them (or 94 percent) have been in northeastern Syria, a region outside of transitional government control and in the hands of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
On June 1, an unusually deadly attack killed three SDF fighters when Islamic State militants remotely detonated a large improvised explosive device (IED) to strike their vehicle on the main highway linking the cities of Raqqa and Hasakeh in northeast Syria. Those killed had been providing security to a convoy of oil tankers—an especially sensitive source of revenue for the SDF.
The Islamic State’s overwhelming focus on conducting attacks in SDF-controlled areas speaks volumes about where it perceives that its best opportunities lie: in territories ruled by a Kurdish-dominated movement whose secular, libertarian, socialist agenda and pursuit of autonomy has become profoundly unpopular among Syria’s Sunni Arab majority since Assad’s departure.
However, measuring the number of Islamic State attacks alone does not tell the whole story. Since January, at least 12 Islamic State plots to conduct mass casualty attacks have been foiled by security forces in government-held areas of Syria—thanks in part to intelligence shared by the United States and regional partners, in at least 10 of those incidents. Those plots included a plan by four Islamic State suicide bombers to conduct a massacre at the revered Shiite Muslim shrine in Sayyida Zeinab, located south of Damascus. Another of the foiled plots would have seen at least two suicide bombers attack a church in Aleppo, and another sought to blow up a passenger bus of returning displaced people on the M5 highway linking Aleppo and Damascus.
Such Islamic State schemes are clearly aimed at crippling the fragile popular confidence in Syria’s transitional government—a well-tested tactic that previously wrought years of chaos and debilitating bloodshed next door in Iraq. At a time when disinformation is rife across Syria, with innocent rumor and malign fake news both playing a direct role in fueling sectarian tensions and conflict, mass casualty terror attacks would threaten to drag Syria away from its optimistic place and into an abyss of civil violence.
When Trump announced in mid-May that he had decided to lift sanctions off Syria and then initiated direct engagement with Syria’s transitional government and its leader, President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s outlook instantly improved. It is not an exaggeration to describe Trump’s initiative as completely game changing. Overnight, Syria’s economic collapse and spiraling humanitarian crisis were afforded a chance to turn around, and a long line of prospective international investors were primed to leap into action.
As Syria and its friends began to look towards recovery, the Islamic State appears to have initiated a concerning pivot. Two days after Trump shook hands with Sharaa in Saudi Arabia, the Islamic State’s weekly al-Naba newsletter featured an editorial that castigated Sharaa for “flinging himself” at “Trump’s doorstep” and reasserted the group’s long-held view that Sharaa was an “apostate” and “idolator” who was “at war against jihad.”
In the two weeks since, the Islamic State has significantly intensified its attempts to directly challenge Syria’s transitional government. In 15 days, the group has been responsible for at least five deadly attacks on Syrian government security forces in Idlib, Deir ez-Zour, and Suwayda. The Islamic State has also conducted its first successful car bomb attack in two years, striking a government police station in the eastern city of al-Mayadin on May 18. At least four other IED attacks (two in government-controlled areas and two in SDF areas) and three foiled IEDs (one in government areas and two in SDF areas) point to the Islamic State having reestablished effective channels of explosives supply, device manufacture, storage, and deployment that had not existed for many months.
The group’s attacks in eastern Syria have also become increasingly bold, with larger cells launching targeted assaults on fixed positions, rather than the previous standard of brief drive-by shootings.
Syria’s government has responded to this sudden intensification of the Islamic State threat. On May 17, the elite General Security Service launched an hours-long series of raids in the city of Aleppo, in which three Islamic State militants were killed and four were captured alive. Explosive suicide vests and IEDs were seized from at least three safe houses. About a week later, on May 25, General Security Service personnel raided several Islamic State compounds in Damascus’s Western Ghouta suburbs, detaining several militants and seizing a formidable cache of weapons, including a shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile; anti-tank missiles; several explosive suicide vests and IEDs; and crates of rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles, and ammunition. Had such capabilities been deployed into urban environments, or a missile launched at an incoming civilian airliner, Syria’s hopeful future would have been dealt a serious blow.
Beyond challenging Syria’s government directly, the Islamic State also appears determined to destabilize complex and fragile dynamics in different parts of the country. The group has conducted at least two IED attacks (targeting government soldiers on patrol) in the southern Druze-majority governorate of Suwayda in 10 days, with a third IED that struck an ambulance in Suwayda as yet unattributed. These are the Islamic State’s first attacks in Suwayda since 2018, and they come amid a profoundly fragile situation internally within the region, and between Suwayda and its surrounding Sunni Arab-dominated areas.
According to two sources within Syria’s government, the Islamic State has also sought to infiltrate and activate fighters in Aleppo’s eastern countryside, where a high-stakes and extremely tense deconfliction and negotiations process continues between the government and the SDF. At least two Islamic State-linked prison breaks have also been foiled in government-held areas of rural Aleppo, and the chief of security at one such prison near Jarablus was killed in an IED attack on May 28.
Clearly, the sudden collapse in Islamic State’s attacks following Assad’s fall was more to do with the group falling back, repositioning, and calculating how to adapt to new conditions than it was the result of any major defeat. The Islamic State’s subsequent resumption of attacks against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and government forces in Idlib; its return to operations in the southern governorate of Suwayda; increased activities in rural parts of northeastern Raqqa and Hasakeh; and significant intensification of attacks in eastern Deir ez-Zour all point to a terrorist organization that now perceives an opportunity, not an existential threat. Whether for the Syrian government in Damascus, the SDF in northeast Syria, or for the U.S.-led coalition, the warning signs should now be flashing—again.
Within this emerging challenge, a new regional security alliance is coming together, uniting Syria with its neighbors, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. A counterterrorism operations center has been established in Damascus in recent weeks, staffed for now by officers from Syria, Turkey, and Jordan—with Iraq and Lebanon planning to join soon. Military coordination in countering the Islamic State has stepped up between Damascus and the U.S. military, as has intelligence exchange between the Syrian government and both the United States and regional states.
These are the kind of strategic responses that are required, and they will undoubtedly help. But ultimately, the test on the ground comes down to the Syrian forces proactively confronting the Islamic State’s determined attempt to resurge. Damascus, the SDF, and the counter-Islamic State coalition are all committed to the fight, but for now at least, the data tells only one story: of an Islamic State that is gradually resurrecting itself and conducting more and more attacks, with greater levels of sophistication and deadliness.
Ultimately, the most potent threat to the Islamic State is posed by the prospect of Syria’s post-Assad transition succeeding—in stabilizing the country, consolidating its rule, managing an economic revival, exerting a monopoly over the use of force, and broadening in representation of Syria’s rich diversity. After all, defeating the likes of the Islamic State is as much—if not more—a battle of ideas and a fight between a narrative of peace, hope, and national unity against one of division, hatred, and violence.
The Islamic State has managed exploit fragile political transitions to its terrifying advantage before. It must not be allowed to do so again.

Normal: Final Part
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~2.3k
Summary: Another lunch with your parents reveals something that’s been locked in your head, but your dad makes you confused and jumbles up the truth. It’s hard enough to focus on a case with a deranged man killing people on the road, you don’t need family drama on top of it.
Warnings: canon violence, canon language, canon talk of death, methods of kill
Author’s Note: I do not own anything from Criminal Minds. All credit goes to their respective owners. If there are any warnings that exceed the normal death/kills from the show, I will list them. If you’ve seen the show, then it’s the same level of angst unless otherwise stated
x
Back at the station, as soon as Jordan knew what she wanted to say, she put together a press conference so she could get the profile out to others. It's still early in the day, so you're confident that a lot of people will watch this. You head back to the station with Spencer's lunch in hand, and he greets you with a kiss when he sees you.
"Thank you," he smiles.
Jordan is on the TV talking with the press, and everyone in the station is watching her on the news.
"We ask the public to listen very carefully to the following description. Anyone who believes they recognize this individual should call our tip line immediately. We are looking for a white, middle-aged, married father. We believe his wife is blond, approximately forty years old, resembles the victims, and drives a luxury sedan. This individual drives a blue small-model SUV and most likely lives in this area. It is also very possible this individual recently suffered a personal trauma in his life. Again, a white, middle-aged, married father. We believe his wife is blond, approximately forty years old, resembles the victims, and drives a luxury sedan."
Jordan makes sure everyone knows exactly who you're looking for, and not long after the conference is aired, there are reports of another murder. The unsub watched the press conference, and he got pissed so he went and murdered someone to get that anger out.
This time, he went off script. This wasn't a calculated plan. This was out of anger. The unsub killed two young men with multiple shots each. Everyone is gathered to watch, but the local police are doing a good job of keeping them at bay.
The energy coming from the parked car is that of two young men, but there is another floating around everywhere. It's the unsub's. He's unhinged, and his condition is getting worse by the second. This man isn't suffering from multiple personalities or anything like that, but he is suffering from a mental illness.
"Joe Karem and Timothy Calvert. DOA with no wants and no warrants. They work in the area, and detectives are notifying their families," Thea says.
"He used a sawed-off shotgun," you state. "That, coupled with close range, shot it out of the driver's side window and driving a blue SUV. It's our guy, but he went way off script. He's suffering, and it's only a matter of time before he's driving down the road and shooting everyone until he's caught."
"Something triggered him and pissed him off."
"Yeah, the press conference. It aired at two, and this happened at 2:20. He was watching the news."
"A Single witness says the shooter was driving a small blue SUV. They didn't get a plate but noticed it was a middle-aged white guy wearing a tie. His suit jacket was hanging in the back."
"If he drives the speed limit, and taking account into red lights and mid-day traffic, I'd say he came from no more than ten miles away. If he was wearing a suit with a suit jacket in the back, he was coming from work. He works in the area."
"I'm gonna call Garcia," Derek says and walks away from the group.
"You think he's gonna kill again soon, don't you?" Thea asks.
"Yes, and he's done killing surrogates."
"Did you know?" Jordan storms over to Hotch angrily.
"Excuse us." Hotch grabs her arm gently and guides her away from everyone else, but you can still hear them. "This is not the time or the place. Are you gonna do this in front of the press?"
"He killed those people because of something I said!"
"No. When we talk to the public, it's always a possibility. That is part of the job. Tell me now if you can do it or not."
"Damn right, I can do this job."
Jordan is in over her head. She thinks she can handle it but she lets her inexperience get the better of her. She was never prepared for what all JJ had to deal with since JJ couldn't teach her everything in time.
"Good. You're about to give another press conference."
Since the press was already at the scene, it wasn't hard to gather everyone. Jordan, with some help from Hotch, had everything she needed to say to them. You're standing off to the side watching her and studying her behavior.
"We are prepared to release to the public additional information about the individual responsible for the freeway shooting. The individual is a white, forty-five to fifty-five-year-old male of average build. He works in this area. He wears a suit and tie to work, and left work very abruptly shortly after two immediately after watching our earlier statement about him. If anyone has any additional information, please call our anonymous tip line. Thank you." She turns to leave but pauses and turns to the camera again. "One last thing. This individual has committed horrible crimes and must be held to account, but he is a husband and a father. He's violent and troubled, but he must be capable of some degree of mercy and compassion. So, we appeal to him... Do not hurt any more people. Please turn yourself in."
This happened so recently that no one could forget if their coworkers suddenly left without an excuse. Someone called the tip line about their coworker, so you, Derek, and Spencer headed over to the place where the call originated to talk to the caller in person. Jack's a worker at a local office building, and his coworker fits the description Jordan gave perfectly.
"That's funny, when I heard the description in the first press conference, I thought of Norman. I just thought it couldn't be, you know? He's so quiet."
"What does Norman do?"
"He's in charge of the company's travel expenses. This is his desk."
Jack escorts you to Norman's desk, and all of his red angry energy is left behind.
"Does he have access to the company cars?"
"Yeah, the whole fleet."
"What about the first press conference made you think of Norman?" you ask.
"The woman mentioned something about him suffering a tragedy. His daughter died in a car accident. She was run over after she ran out into the street."
"How long ago was this?"
"Six months. I really should have done more to help him." A woman brings Jack a file on Norman. "This is Norman's personnel file."
You take it and file through it until you get to his personal information such as his address.
"Is this address current?"
"It should be."
"Why are there two files?"
"We cross-reference married couples. Norman's wife Vanessa works here, too."
"We need to speak with her."
"She's not here. She just got a promotion, so she took a couple of weeks off."
Your phone rings, and you pick up when you see Hotch calling. Derek is already texting Emily the address since she's with Hotch and Rossi.
"Y/N, we have a high-speed chase at 117th and Pacific. It sounds like our guy."
"Alright, we're closer to that, so we're on our way now."
"Prentiss got the address from Morgan, so we're headed to his house. If he's having a break, he could be on his way there to finish it. We're on our way. Be careful."
"Got it." You hang up. "We need to go." The three of you take off back to the car with you and Derek in the front and Spencer. Norman's anger swirls out of the building which only you can see. "Go straight and make a right at the light up ahead. I can see his energy."
Derek makes a sharp right, and you have to grab onto the handlebar that's attached to the ceiling. Derek is driving fast to catch up to the car chase, and none of you are wearing any seatbelts. With his crazy driving, it's hard for everyone to stay in their seats, causing Spencer to panic. Derek is making sharp turns and weaving in and out of traffic, and you shake your head.
"Spencer, baby, I love you to pieces but you need to calm down. The more you panic, the more I panic, and if we're both panicking, then Derek panics and he can't panic while driving."
"Sorry. Sorry," Spencer chuckles nervously.
"We're just going to put our seatbelts on." You're the only one who does so, and that takes flying out the window off your chest. "Take a left at the next light."
Derek does so, but not a lot of people are seeing a big police SUV barreling their way. You close your eyes tightly because if you don't see it, then it's not really there. Derek makes it through the light without any injury to anyone, and you open your eyes to peek at what's going on.
The police are chatting over the radio, and you can hear someone shooting at them. It sounds like a shotgun, and you can only imagine it's Norman shooting.
"Repeat, shots fired! On the chase now," an officer says.
"He's losing it. Reid, does it look like the chase could be headed to his house?"
Spencer has the map of the area in the backseat. You can tell Derek which direction Norman is going, but Spencer can tell him where he's heading to.
"Uh, yeah, I think so. It almost looks like he's starting to go in a wide circle toward that direction."
"All units, pursuit now headed over Memorial Bridge."
"We're almost there. Turn right at the next light. Memorial Bridge is around the next corner," Spencer says.
Derek approaches the intersection before the bridge, and all three of you see Norman racing in the opposite direction with three police cars behind him.
"Hold on!!" Derek slams on the brakes and does a quick U-turn to chase after everyone. "Are you okay?"
"I'll get back to you on that," you mutter.
"Reid, get on the radio and tell them we're in the chase," Derek says and steps on the gas pedal.
"This is the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit," Spencer says over the radio. "We caught up to the chase and are now monitoring. We ask if you're able to stop the vehicle, you allow us to take the lead in contacting the driver. We believe him to be a severely deranged suspect."
"Copy."
Derek turns the corner and slams on the brakes when he sees the situation unfold. Norman swerves to the left and crashes into the concrete median. His car flips over and lands on the roof, shattering the windshield into pieces. Derek is the first out of the car and Spencer is the second. You take a moment to gather yourself before unbuckling your seat belt. You open the door and step out, and that's when the entire world slows down around you.
Derek yells at the officers not to shoot, but no noise is coming out of his mouth. Norman crawls out of the car in slow motion but you're not looking at him. You can see Norman's family in the car, but they're not moving to get out at all. All three of them (his wife and two kids) look at you before glitching out of existence.
They were never in the car with him even though he thought they were. They're dead and he may not even know it.
The entire world speeds up and returns back to normal, and you raise your gun at Norman like everyone else is doing.
"Norman! Don't move!"
"What are you doing? What are you doing? My family's inside!"
"Stop and listen to me! Listen to me! Nobody is in that car. Your family's gone, Norman."
"No, they're in there."
Norman's pain is great enough for you to feel it from where you're standing, and the tears start to well in your eyes.
"They're gone, Norman! Look inside. Look in the car. They were never there. It's over. They were never with you."
"No, but they were," he says heartbreakingly.
"Your family's gone, Norman."
Norman looks in the car and sees it's empty, and that's when he breaks down crying.
"Oh, god, what did I do? Oh, what did I do to my family? My family! I'm sorry. I'm sorry!"
Derek puts his gun away and manages to handcuff Norman, and you lower your gun just as the tears fall from your eyes.
"It's over, Norman. We're gonna get you some help."
You see this kind of thing all the time, but Jordan usually doesn't. She thought she could do this job, but after seeing Norman's family dead in their beds from where he shot them, she decided that this isn't the job for her. The entire ride back home was draining, but as soon as you stepped foot into the BAU, you felt relief.
"Hey, do you guys ever notice how the trip home always seems to go so much faster?" Emily asks.
"That's because the tailwinds are in our favor," Spencer answers.
You look up and see someone standing in the briefing room, and a wide smile breaks out on your face when you recognize her blonde hair.
"JJ's here."
You set your things down and rush over to the briefing room where she's standing by the table holding her son. You gasp happily when you see your Godson in her arms.
"What are you doing here?" Spencer smiles.
"Hello, handsome boy," you grin and gently grab his fist.
"Garcia said you guys were on your way back tonight. I thought you could use a surprise."
"I thought I gave you strict orders to get this place out of your head for a while," Hotch says.
"My bad. I couldn't help myself," Penelope says when she enters with a bottle of milk in her hands. "Here. I heated it up."
"JJ," Derek says and makes his way to the front. "May I?"
"Of course."
JJ hands her son over to Derek who supports his head. He's grinning from ear to ear, and you notice Hotch is even cracking a smile at this.
"Look at that. He smiles," you tease him.
"I just realized with all that we do and see in this room, it never smiles. I wanted at least one good memory to hold on to."
"This is the best memory you could have given us," you grin and hug her.
"There's no tragedy in life like the death of a child. Things never get back to the way they were." - President Dwight Eisenhower

Rockies Christmas - Day 10
Warnings: Some angst, Hospital stay, Shameless product placement
Guide: CBF = Cali’s Boyfriend / CGF = Castor’s Girlfriend / MBF = Marcella’s Boyfriend {I didn’t want to give them names}
A hand on my shoulder is gently shaking me, “Kira.” It’s a hand much smaller than James’. “Kira.”
I roll over scrubbing my eyes, “mmmyeah.” I look up and there stands Cali.
“It’s six fifteen. Thought you’d like some breakfast before going to see Dad.”
Yesterday slams into my brain. “Thanks. I’ll be out in a minute.” She nods, smiling softly, and closes the door on her way out. I swim to the side of the massive bed. Scrubbing my eyes again, I get up and go to the bathroom. After flushing, I wash my hands and splash water on my face. I change clothes quickly back into what I’d worn yesterday. Returning to the bedroom, I pull out my brush, do a quick raking on my hair and bun it up again as I open the door.
Timothy is there with a couple large bags from McDonald’s. I just huff a smile. Cali comes up to me, “We may have ordered too much.” There’s concern in her eyes.
“We’ll leave a note for the cleaning staff. They’ll appreciate it” I console her. Finding an Egg McMuffin, I pull out a chair and sit.
“What do you want to drink?” Cali asks.
“Oh wait!” Timothy speaks up. “Jordan told me. Here.” He hands me a SB cup.
I chug part of it. “Bless you both!” I hear a phone ringing in my room. I quickly find that it’s mine. “Hi Lars.” I walk back out to the table.
“Hey. How you holding up?”
Sighing, “I’ve been better. Sorry for the crappy Birthday present yesterday.”
“Hey, that wasn’t on you!” Lars laughs. “I just talked to him. He sounds tired but good.”
“Who can sleep good in a hospital?” I hear the Dane laugh. “We’re just getting ready to go see him.” Cali is bouncing, “Hey Lars, Cali wants to talk to you.”
“Put her on.”
“Hi Onkel Lars!” as she hits speaker. “Is Auntie Jess there too?”
“Yeah, so are the boys.” A chorus of Hi’s from the background.
“Uhm. You’re going to be Store Onkel Lars.”
“Say what?” Lars’ voice says.
“Onkel Lars, I’m pregnant.”
“You’re making James … a Grandfather?!” there is happy cheering in the background.
The room on this side of the pond erupts in laughter. “Yes.”
“Well, it’s about time one of you did!” he laughs. “I’m … we’re very happy for you!!”
Cali hands the phone back to me. I take it off speaker. “Hey Lars.”
“Hey. Tell that lunkhead to stop showboating.”
“The kids say that he wasn’t showboating.”
“Please tell me he was wearing a helmet.”
“Yes.”
“Thank god.” I hear him chew on his toothpick. “Ok, Jess is excited, she wants to go baby shopping for Cali.”
“Hey, I really hope that you did have a good day yesterday.”
I can almost see him nodding, “I did. Until that lunkhead of yours took a spill! But I’m grateful he’s going to be ok.”
“Oh! So now he’s my lunkhead!”
“This time yes!” Lars laughs.
“I don’t know if the others know.”
“I’ll call them. Kira, it’s all good.”
“Thanks Lars. I’ll keep you posted.”
“Please do. Farvel!” He ends the call.
I chug more of my coffee and finish the sandwich.
Castor stands up and starts clearing away the garbage. “Let’s get this show on the road.”
Cali finds a pen and paper and leaves a note for the cleaning staff.
I look up the number for the car service. “The van will be downstairs in ten.” That put a hustle in everyone. Shirts are changed, coats grabbed, last bites of breakfast taken, shoes found and put on feet. Grabbing both phones, my wallet and my jacket along with a key card, we all pile into the elevator. Shortly after we get to the lobby the van arrives. Same driver as the night before. Piling in, I watch the Christmas decorations go by on the drive to the hospital. The same ones that I’d been happy to see just a few days ago with James at my side. Getting to the hospital, I lead the way to the nurses’ station. After getting his room number, we make our way to the floor. The elevator doors open and there stands the doctor.
“Wow, you are punctual” he smiles. “He’s actually awake. But please, don’t over tax him.” Motioning with his hand, “This way.” As we get to the door, he puts a hand on my arm as the kids all enter the room, “This might be a little much for him.”
“I’ll kick them out soon, but I’m not going to deny him his kids.”
The doctor nods as he walks away.
I enter the room. There’s one IV bag hung and a heart monitor beeping. The kids have all taken up space around the bed. I can’t see him. I can hear him. Lars was right. James sounds exhausted. I wait patiently. They are chattering about the hotel suite. The helicopter ride. That the other machines got back home ok.
“Is Kira here?” comes James’ voice. Castor looks over his shoulder at me. He steps aside. James is pale but alive. He looks like he’s been in the boxing ring with George Foreman. The whole left side of his face is bruised. That eye a little swollen. He’s holding a cold pack in his right hand which looks a little puffy. But those eyes. Those big glacier blue eyes. They are perfect.
“I’m here.” He smiles and reaches out for my hand. I take his left hand with my right.
Cali speaks up, “Hey, let’s go do some after Christmas sales shopping.”
“Then maybe hit up a movie” Marcella pitches in.
They all bid us goodbye and tumble out the door. Then it’s quiet and just us.
“Hey” he says, his eyelids dropping.
“Hey.”
He tugs me, “Come here.”
I climb into bed beside him, making sure that all the tubes and wires are not being pinched, and stretch out beside him, my head cradled on his left shoulder. His hand rests on my hip.
He looks at me, “I’m sorry.”
I press my fingers to his lips, “You didn’t do anything wrong. The kids have assured everyone that you were not showboating.” He barely shakes his head. “I’m just grateful that you were wearing your helmet.”
“That bad?”
I lift my head up, “James. It’s split in two.”
He sniffs out a smile, “Explains why my head hurts.”
I caress his chin, “Sleep.”
He snugs me in closer to him, “Ok.”
My eyes close shortly after his.
I hear the nurses coming in and checking monitors. I hear other machines beeping down the hallway. I hear his heartbeat in my ear. I feel his hand resting on my hip. I say a prayer and thank those in the great upstairs for watching over him. I feel the tear leak from my closed eye warm my cheek before warming the hospital gown covering James. I have no idea what time it is when my eyes finally crack open. James’ hand is playing with my fingers resting on his chest. I rock my head back. His eyes slit open. “Hey.” I smile up at him.
“This bed sucks.”
I pat his chest, “Most hospital beds do.” I wiggle a little. He winces. “I’m not hurting you, am I?”
“Right now, everything hurts.” He tightens his arm around my back. “But, I do gotta piss.”
Snorfelling at him, I detangle myself from him, the wires, tubing and slide from the bed.
A nurse walks in, “Ah. You’re awake.”
“And I gotta piss.”
“Here, let me pop these off. That will make it easier.” She pops off all the heart monitor leads.
He swings his legs off the bed, the sheet still wrapped around his legs and slowly stands. Then sits quickly grabbing his left knee with a wince. I lift his gown. His left leg from mid shin to almost waist is black and blue.
“I think I know where the snowmobile landed on me” he grimaces.
The nurse hands over a plastic urinal bottle, “Use this right now. I need to get your doctor in here.”
I help James get lined up in the bottle. His head leans onto my shoulder. I hear his pee hitting the plastic container. He heaves a sigh.
“Better?”
“mmmmhmmm.” He’s still leaning into me. I lift his gown and remove the urinal. Closing its lid, I set it on the floor. Then I help him shift back into the bed. I move the urinal into the bathroom by the toilet and wash my hands.
The doctor comes in the room as I exit the bathroom. The doctor flips back the covers and hoists the hospital gown. James’ left leg, hip and part of his torso look like a Jackson Pollock painting done in blues, purples and flesh tones. The doctor runs his hands over the area watching James’ face. “I know that you were seriously burned, but don’t let that pain tolerance hide if these hurt” the doctors’ words are kind.
“It hurts” is all James says.
“I don’t really want to give you a narcotic pain med.” He pulls the covers back over James’ body. The nurse reattaches the leads.
“Please don’t.”
“Okay. I’m going to give you a high dose of naproxen. But to do that, you’ll need to stay another night.”
James just nods.
“I would highly recommend that you” he looks at me, “sleep on his other side.”
“Alright.”
He writes up the order and hands it to the nurse. As he walks out, “You both should have a sleep study done.”
We both just look at each other. He looks at me. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For being a pain.”
“Turn around is fair game.” He looks at me. “Halloween?” I grin.
“Yeah, but you didn’t end up in the hospital.”
“True. But I didn’t have a five hundred pound snowmobile land on me.”
“Seven hundred, but I concede the point.” I look at him.
“What? Dad concedes a point?” Castor says coming in the door grinning. The other kids follow in.
They start talking about the bargains they’d found. The movie that they went to see.
“Hey Dad” Marcella pipes up. “We brought you two a late lunch.”
“Oh yeah” CGF pulls out a bag from her backpack. The smell fills the room. MBF closes the door.
“I know that Dad wants the meatball sub,” Cali says. “I hope you’ll like the turkey one.”
“Thank you.” I take the offered sandwich. “This is huge!”
“Castor will finish whatever you don’t” says CGF. “And something to wash them down.” She pulls out a pair of Severed Lime cans.
James almost inhales his sub. “Gee Dad, you weren’t hungry at all!” Castor teases him.
“Nope.” James lets out a huge burp. “Not at all.” I smile at him as he looks at me.
The nurse comes in with a new IV bag loaded with the pain meds. “Oh good, you’ve eaten. This med might have upset your stomach without food.” She quickly changes out the bags. “Uhm, where is the…?” she looks at me. I point to the bathroom. “Thanks. I’ll collect it later.” She walks to the door, “Those really smell good!” as she leaves.
“You kids aren’t eating” James says.
“We ate there” MBF says. “We thought that you two might be hungry and hospital food is horrid.”
“Yes, it is. Almost as bad as the beds.” James tries to shift some and winces.
“You need to move up the bed?” I ask. He just nods. “Castor, MBF will you two please help? Grab under the arms. Now.” They pull James a good six inches up on the mattress while I hold the bottom sheet from sliding with him. His eyes close for a minute. I rest my hand on his chest. He rests his hand over mine and opens his eyes. I can tell he’s ready to drift back to sleep.
CGF speaks up, “I think we need to let him rest.” She wraps an arm around Castor’s waist, “C’mon.”
Cali whispers to me, “You staying?” I just nod. Cali smiles at me, then leans over and kisses her Dad on the cheek. “See ya later – Grandpa!”
He smiles and his eyes brighten some, “See you later little Mama.”
As the kids file out, I hand Castor the rest of my sub. He smiles at me, his eyes lighting up. Damn. He has his Daddy’s eyes.
Once the door is closed, James pats the bed on his right side. I climb in, again making sure that I’m not on any wires or tubes. His hand curls around my head, playing with my bun. I reach up and pull off the hair tie. His fingers snarl into my hair, caressing my scalp. Those fingers in my hair slow. Then stop. I grab the TV controller and start a long movie. The nurse comes in a couple of times to check the IV flow. She also collects the full – and leaves an empty – plastic urinal bottle. She smiles at me each time. The movie ends and I start another. James shifts some in his sleep, groaning softly. The next time the nurse comes in, I ask her quietly about using arnica oil on James. She lifts her eyebrows and just as quietly says that she’ll ask his doctor. About an hour later she comes back with a bottle and a towel. She hands me the bottle and lays the towel over my hip. “I guess you know how to use this.” I just nod. Memories of various aftermaths of being in bed with James flow through my brain. I gently work the oil into the bruises on his body. I can’t quite reach his leg, but the worst part on his hip and torso I am able to rub the oil in. Again, I start another movie. It’s getting dark out. The nurse comes in again, this time changing the IV bags. James shifts in his sleep while she’s there. He again moans softly. She pulls up his chart on the computer and makes notes. She smiles at me as she leaves the room. I hear my phone buzz. It’s Cali. She’s asking for an update on James. I send her the snoring emoji. She replies with a thumbs up. About eleven, James wakes. Sorta.
“I gotta piss.”
“Hang on.” I climb out of bed, grab the urinal and put in place. “Let ‘er rip” I say.
He smiles at me, “I could get used to this.”
As he finishes, I cap the bottle, “Yeah, I don’t think so.” I put the bottle in the bathroom, wash my hands and climb back in bed. He’s already half asleep.
“Thanks for staying with me” he mumbles.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way” I kiss his chin.
His grin slowly slips as he surrenders to sleep again. I curl up against him. The nurse comes in again to check the IV. She leaves and returns with a blanket for me. “See you tomorrow” she says kindly before leaving the room. I pull the blanket up over me, my head on his chest, my eyes close.

AU where William Zarick still dies, but Joey and Denise live!
“Denise, wait,” Pat said before he could stop himself. He weighed the risk, and let it go.
“No, I’m sorry. I really shouldn’t have said anything,” the widow moved to roll up the window. In the passenger seat, her cat miaowed.
“Is it about how your son really died?” Pat blurted
She stared at him from the driver’s seat, the road forgotten. “What?”
“I was there. Technically. Kinda. Look, telling me whatever it was isn’t going to put me in any more danger than I’ve already got myself into, I think.”
“You know, then.” I wasn’t a question. “William always said it was in the root of this town. That’s why we moved here.”
“Why don’t you come inside?” Pat asked. “You can tell me…whatever it is you know. I…don’t think I’ve got the best track record keeping people safe, but I’ll try.”
The car engine idled, and then Denise turned the key, shutting it off. Her steps were uneasy. Pat could feel the uncertainty of grief in her steps. he reached out an arm, an offer of support. She didn't take it. She sat heavily on the couch in the Pitstop, not caring about the grease stained rag draped over the back.
"I don't know much. William didn't want to tell me. He said it was better if I didn't worry. But I'm a politician's wife. Was. Widow. I-- it's what I've always done. Listened and worried. So I know, some. Dr. King, he's in a coma, but he was in my house a few days ago. William made him upset. And then Jordan..."
"Jordan?" Pat asked. He'd heard the name... but where?
"Jordan Mahkent. He runs the American Dream. He's part of this. I don't know how, but he is. Maybe he's in charge. The day Joey--that morning, he was waiting for William. I don't know if it was a--a threat, or--but he knows. and I can't stay in this town with him here."
"Alright," Pat said, quiet. If Barb's boss was involved, that was it. No matter what Courtney said, the time for secrets was done. They had to figure out a game plan that got everyone out of this alive.
Everyone else, anyways.
"Mrs...." he stopped. " Denise. Have you ever heard of the Injustice Society of America?"
she blinked. "I've only lived in this small town for 7 years," she said. "I haven't had my head in the sand my whole life. but wh--" she stopped. " you don't think..."
"Dr. King is Brainwave. " Pat said, wondering if he was the one signing her death warrant and not the other way around. " and your husband... I'd have to say...."
"No. I.. know who he was. All his stage magic. None of it was stage tricks. I knew he'd... done things. I just thought it was over. That it was smaller."
"If it helps, he, uh, only tried to kill me once," Pat said.
"I don't think it does."
"Right," Pat said, awkwardly. "look, we're... we're going to figure this out."
"we?" she asked. " the two of us? against...."
"well.my wife, once I tell her. And..." he pinched his lips in a sigh. "And the new JSA."
"They're... reforming?"
"You could say that."
Denise nodded. "alright. I'll stay and help. but I want your word on something."
"Depends on what it is," Pat said, having been tricked three times too many by Mike in that way.
"When we find out who killed my family. I want to kill them." Any mousishness had melted away in that sentence.
"If that's what it comes to," Pat said, hoping that it wouldn't, and thinking of the stain that have never come out of Sylvester's suit, not till the day Courtney had cut it to size.
-
Halfway across town, Beth Chapel looked around the basement room and beamed. "There we go. Litterbox, digbox, nest, toys, fresh water, pellets, and broccoli stems for a treat!" her eyes widened, and she dove for the floor, where the white rabbit she'd rescued from the bridge wreck was mauling one of the care books she'd checked out of the library.
"Oh, no," she said, checking "The Complete Guide to Raising Healthy Rabbits" over. Toothmarks dented some of the title, and she winced at the uneven bumps under her fingers. There had to be a chapter on how to keep the destruction to a minimum. Not that she worried her parents would notice or care that she'd adopted a bunny, but that she couldn't disappoint the town librarian like this.
Carefully, she sat, waiting to see if the bunny might approach her. She knew better than to just pick it--him--up.
He twitched his nose at her, then hopped to the food bowl, picked it up in his teeth, and sent it clattering. Before she could scramble for the broom, she froze.
The bunny wasn't kicking pellets everywhere for the sake out it, like she'd thought. One by one, he was carrying them into place.
J. a lopsided O. E.
Beth held her breath as the rabbit made a wonky looking lowercase y and sat back on fluffy haunches.
"Oh my god." Beth whispered. "Joey? You're Joey's rabbit? He had real magic?"
He kicked his dish at her, the metal clattering across the floor with a hollow ringing sound.

Fix Yourself Before It’s Too Late: A Guide to Personal Growth and Authentic Living
youtube
In the thought-provoking conversation between Dr. Jordan Peterson, a renowned clinical psychologist and professor, and his interviewer, many core themes related to self-improvement, responsibility, and authenticity come to light. Their discussion delves into some of the most challenging yet essential aspects of personal development, touching on topics that deeply resonate with people navigating the complexities of modern life. Below is an in-depth breakdown of the key areas they covered and the insights offered.
1. Self-Responsibility and the Importance of Taking Ownership
One of the main topics discussed was the need for individuals to take responsibility for their lives, actions, and choices. Dr. Peterson emphasizes that self-responsibility is foundational to achieving a meaningful life. When people blame external factors, such as society, other individuals, or circumstances, they often lose sight of their own power to change and grow. True self-responsibility involves acknowledging the areas where one can exert control—thoughts, behaviors, and responses—and making conscious efforts to improve these aspects.
Key Insights:
Self-responsibility as a cornerstone: Taking ownership is crucial for personal growth because it shifts the focus from what others can do to fix your life to what you can do to better yourself.
Power over choice: Even when external circumstances are difficult, choosing how to respond can profoundly impact one’s mental and emotional state.
2. Self-Deception and Avoidance
The conversation also touched on the ways people deceive themselves or avoid confronting uncomfortable truths. Dr. Peterson points out that self-deception is one of the most common barriers to personal growth. By hiding from certain aspects of themselves—whether it’s a tendency to procrastinate, a fear of failure, or unresolved emotional pain—people create a facade that distances them from their true selves. This avoidance can manifest as denial, rationalization, or even a tendency to present a “socially acceptable” version of oneself to others.
Key Insights:
Self-deception as a hindrance to growth: Avoiding the truth prevents people from making meaningful changes and achieving authenticity.
Unmasking through self-reflection: Honest self-reflection is a critical process that allows individuals to identify areas of avoidance and work towards facing them.
3. The Role of Authenticity and Integrity
Authenticity was highlighted as a powerful driver of fulfillment and success. Dr. Peterson suggests that living in alignment with one’s values, beliefs, and true nature not only fosters inner peace but also strengthens relationships with others. Integrity—being true to oneself—is essential because it aligns actions with values, creating consistency and trustworthiness. In contrast, pretending to be something or someone else leads to inner conflict, anxiety, and eventual dissatisfaction.
Key Insights:
Living authentically: When individuals live authentically, they experience a sense of wholeness and peace.
Integrity builds resilience: Maintaining integrity helps people face life’s challenges with a solid foundation.
4. The Pain of Confronting Reality and Personal Responsibility
Dr. Peterson notes that acknowledging personal responsibility can be painful, as it involves recognizing one’s own mistakes, limitations, and areas of neglect. Many people are tempted to ignore these difficult truths to avoid the discomfort associated with change. However, confronting reality is necessary for growth. Accepting one’s flaws, taking responsibility for them, and actively working to improve can lead to profound, positive transformation.
Key Insights:
Confronting uncomfortable truths: Facing reality, though painful, is essential to build a life of meaning.
Acceptance and action: Acknowledging faults and mistakes paves the way for actionable steps toward improvement.
5. The Fear of Failure and Its Impact on Growth
Another essential aspect of the discussion was the pervasive fear of failure that prevents people from pursuing their potential. Dr. Peterson argues that fear of failure often keeps individuals from taking risks, trying new things, or venturing outside their comfort zones. This fear can be paralyzing and lead to stagnation. However, reframing failure as a learning opportunity can empower individuals to approach life with curiosity and resilience rather than anxiety.
Key Insights:
Failure as a teacher: Embracing failure as a stepping stone can lead to personal growth and greater resilience.
Overcoming stagnation: Moving past the fear of failure allows individuals to break free from comfort zones and pursue their goals.
6. Addressing Self-Sabotage and Developing Self-Discipline
Self-sabotage, the habit of undermining oneself, is often rooted in unresolved fears or insecurities. Dr. Peterson highlights how individuals can unconsciously sabotage their success by procrastinating, neglecting responsibilities, or not setting clear goals. Developing self-discipline is crucial to counteract this tendency. With discipline, people can create healthy routines, avoid distractions, and stay focused on long-term goals, ultimately leading to more productive and fulfilling lives.
Key Insights:
Self-sabotage and insecurity: Self-sabotage often arises from a lack of confidence or fear of success.
Building discipline: Self-discipline helps individuals stay committed to their goals and overcome self-imposed barriers.
7. Finding Meaning through Responsibility
The conversation also explored the concept of finding purpose and meaning by assuming responsibility for oneself and others. Dr. Peterson argues that people often find the greatest fulfillment not in leisure or relaxation but in taking on meaningful tasks and commitments. By assuming responsibility, individuals connect with a sense of purpose that is grounded in contributing to something larger than themselves. This sense of purpose can lead to profound satisfaction and inner peace.
Key Insights:
Purpose through responsibility: Taking on responsibilities can lead to a more meaningful, purpose-driven life.
Beyond personal gain: True fulfillment often comes from contributing to others or a cause beyond oneself.
8. Developing a Framework for Self-Improvement
Dr. Peterson also discusses the importance of having a structured approach to self-improvement. Instead of trying to change everything at once, he recommends breaking down goals into manageable steps, setting clear objectives, and tracking progress over time. This method allows individuals to gradually build better habits, make sustainable changes, and gain confidence in their ability to grow and adapt.
Key Insights:
Small, consistent changes: Lasting growth comes from small, consistent efforts over time.
Structured self-improvement: A framework for self-improvement creates clarity, direction, and accountability.
9. Embracing the Reality of Imperfection
Finally, Dr. Peterson encourages people to accept their imperfections and the fact that self-improvement is a lifelong journey. This perspective removes the pressure to achieve perfection and instead fosters a mindset of continuous learning and self-compassion. Acknowledging imperfection allows individuals to grow without being discouraged by setbacks or unrealistic standards.
Key Insights:
Accepting imperfection: Real change involves embracing mistakes and imperfections as part of the journey.
Self-compassion: Being kind to oneself creates resilience and encourages progress.
Summary of the Conversation’s Message
In summary, Dr. Jordan Peterson’s conversation revolves around the idea that true personal growth is achieved through self-responsibility, authenticity, and embracing both one’s strengths and weaknesses. The journey to self-improvement requires honesty, discipline, and the willingness to face uncomfortable truths. By accepting responsibility, confronting fears, and working with a structured approach, individuals can develop a more meaningful, purposeful life that is grounded in authenticity and integrity.
The insights shared in this conversation serve as a powerful call to action for those who are ready to take ownership of their lives, stop blaming external factors, and engage in the difficult but rewarding work of self-improvement. For anyone seeking a more fulfilling life, the principles discussed provide a roadmap for cultivating resilience, personal strength, and a sense of true purpose.
Introduction: Fix Yourself Before It’s Too Late
In a world that is more interconnected than ever, we are bombarded with messages about who we should be, what we should value, and how we should behave. Social media, societal expectations, and even our own friends and family often project ideas onto us that can feel impossible to live up to—or that lead us away from the path that feels truly our own. The pressures of modern life can make it incredibly difficult to find one’s own identity, purpose, and fulfillment. In these turbulent times, there’s an urgent call to action that goes deeper than societal success or external approval: fixing yourself from the inside out.
This essay, Fix Yourself Before It’s Too Late: A Guide to Personal Growth and Authentic Living, is designed as a guide for those who are willing to look inward, to examine the truths and illusions within themselves, and to do the difficult but rewarding work of self-improvement. Drawing inspiration from the powerful conversation between Dr. Jordan Peterson—a clinical psychologist, professor, and author whose ideas have shaped millions of lives—and his interviewer, this book provides practical steps for addressing some of the most essential yet challenging aspects of personal growth.
The Journey of Self-Discovery
At the heart of this journey is self-discovery: understanding who you truly are and confronting the obstacles that have kept you from living authentically. Too often, people spend years, even decades, living by the expectations of others, trying to meet societal norms, or suppressing their own voices. Yet, without introspection and self-awareness, we risk falling into a pattern of “social masks,” playing roles that never truly reflect our inner selves. This essay encourages you to ask the “stupid questions” that often go unspoken but are essential to understanding where you stand in life and how you can move forward.
Throughout this essay, you’ll be guided to confront some of the most common and insidious barriers to self-growth. These include self-deception, the tendency to manipulate or mask your true intentions, fear of failure, and the subtle but persistent habit of self-sabotage. Each of these challenges not only restricts personal freedom but also distances us from the potential we each have within us to live meaningful, purposeful lives. Fixing yourself doesn’t mean achieving perfection, nor does it imply finding a quick fix for all your problems. Rather, it is a continual process of honesty, humility, and effort—a commitment to becoming a bit better, a bit wiser, and a bit more authentic each day.
Practical and Actionable Insights
This essay isn’t just a collection of ideas; it’s a practical guide filled with actionable insights, exercises, and real-world applications. For each theme or obstacle, there are tools to help you not only understand the concept but apply it to your own life in tangible ways. You’ll find journaling exercises, reflective questions, and steps to help you develop small, meaningful habits that lead to substantial change. These exercises are designed to make this journey accessible, achievable, and deeply personal. After all, while everyone’s journey is unique, the tools for genuine self-transformation are often universal.
Inspired by Wisdom, Driven by Realism
This essay doesn’t promise utopia; it doesn’t offer the kind of motivational slogans that fade the moment real challenges arise. Instead, it draws on the wisdom of thinkers like Dr. Jordan Peterson and incorporates realistic, down-to-earth advice for facing life’s hardships. True personal growth requires embracing both the light and dark sides of our nature, understanding the complexity of human motivation, and accepting the discomfort of change. The journey may be difficult, but the rewards—clarity, strength, and authenticity—are worth the struggle.
Why This Essay, Why Now?
We live in a time of unprecedented anxiety, uncertainty, and social comparison. Many people feel overwhelmed, lost, or even paralyzed by these pressures. While countless resources offer advice on success, productivity, or mental health, few dig deeply into the fundamental process of becoming a better version of oneself—addressing not just outward success but internal alignment and integrity.
Fix Yourself Before It’s Too Late is here to serve as a roadmap for those who are ready to take responsibility for their lives, to stop blaming external factors, and to focus on what they can control: their thoughts, behaviors, and decisions. The phrase “before it’s too late” doesn’t imply fear or urgency for the sake of it, but rather the understanding that we only have a finite amount of time to live in alignment with our true selves. Each day that we avoid self-honesty, fail to make needed changes, or ignore our potential is a day that cannot be regained.
Who This Essay Is For
Whether you’re someone who is just beginning to explore personal growth, or you’ve been on this journey for years but feel stuck in old patterns, this essay is designed for you. It’s written for those who are tired of superficial advice and are ready to face their fears, confront their shortcomings, and make real progress. It’s for people who want to be better friends, partners, professionals, and citizens—not through appearances, but through authenticity.
A Call to Action
The first step to fixing yourself is acknowledging that you have the power and responsibility to do so. It’s recognizing that while circumstances, relationships, or life events may influence you, they don’t define you. You define yourself through your actions, choices, and the values you uphold.
So, let this essay be the beginning of a journey—a journey into deeper self-understanding, stronger integrity, and a more meaningful life. Fix Yourself Before It’s Too Late is more than a collection of words; it’s a call to take ownership of your life. To look in the mirror, face who you truly are, and take the steps to become who you’re capable of being. Because in the end, only you can fix yourself, and there is no better time to start than now.
Part 1: Ask the “Stupid” Questions
Key Concepts
One of the most underrated yet transformative acts in any journey toward self-improvement is the courage to ask questions—even those that might seem “stupid” or naive. Many of us hesitate, fearing embarrassment or judgment from others. Yet these simple questions often touch on truths that others also grapple with but feel uncomfortable expressing. By confronting our fear of judgment and acknowledging our doubts openly, we create an avenue for growth, understanding, and genuine wisdom. The questions we’re often afraid to ask tend to be the ones that hold us back most.
Biblical Inspiration
In the Bible, asking questions—even challenging ones—often leads to significant revelations and growth. A prime example can be found in the story of Nicodemus in the Gospel of John (John 3:1-21). Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council, approaches Jesus one night with questions. Despite being a respected teacher, he struggles with understanding Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom of God. His questions could have seemed “stupid” given his position and knowledge, but his willingness to ask revealed his desire to truly understand, opening him to deeper spiritual insights.
Jesus responds patiently, explaining the concept of being “born again” and offering profound insights into salvation and the nature of God’s kingdom. This exchange not only helps Nicodemus but also serves as a powerful teaching moment for all readers, illustrating that curiosity and honest inquiry are essential for growth, regardless of social standing or perceived intelligence. This passage encourages us to seek answers, knowing that vulnerability can lead to profound understanding.
Application: Identifying and Addressing “Stupid” Questions
How do we begin identifying these unasked questions, especially those that might be holding us back in life? Often, these questions are buried under layers of self-doubt, fear of judgment, or assumptions that the answers should be obvious. Yet, as Nicodemus demonstrated, asking them can be the gateway to personal and spiritual growth.
Here are a few practical steps and exercises to help bring these questions to the surface:
Exercise 1: Reflect on Areas of Uncertainty
Identify Repeated Doubts: Spend some time in quiet reflection and write down any recurring thoughts or uncertainties you have. These could be about your career, relationships, beliefs, or even life’s purpose. The questions that linger in the back of your mind, however simple they might seem, often indicate areas where understanding is lacking.
List Questions Without Judgment: Write down every question that comes to mind about these uncertainties. Do not censor yourself or worry about how “smart” or “important” these questions are. This exercise is about exploring your inner doubts and opening yourself up to learning.
Examples of Common “Stupid” Questions:
“What if I’m not good enough for this role or opportunity?”
“What does success really mean for me?”
“Why do I struggle to feel happy, even with all I have?”
“Why does my faith sometimes feel distant or unclear?”
Reflecting on these questions without immediate answers allows you to explore your vulnerabilities and foster a deeper understanding of yourself.
Exercise 2: Embrace Self-Doubt as a Learning Tool
Recognize that self-doubt can be a doorway to self-discovery. Instead of shying away from the fear and discomfort it brings, try embracing it with curiosity. When you feel that twinge of uncertainty or anxiety, ask yourself, “What is this doubt trying to teach me?”
Consider the Apostle Peter, who frequently asked questions that others might not have dared to ask. In Matthew 14:28-33, when Peter sees Jesus walking on water, he asks, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus invites him to step out, and Peter, despite his doubts, takes that literal leap of faith. Though he falters and begins to sink when fear takes over, Jesus reaches out and saves him. Through this experience, Peter learns about his own faith limitations but also gains a new understanding of trust and reliance on Jesus.
Like Peter, you may feel unsure or falter, but stepping out and confronting those “stupid” questions can offer valuable insights.
Exercise 3: Start Asking Your Questions in Safe Spaces
One of the best ways to overcome the fear of asking “stupid” questions is to start small, within safe, supportive environments. Find a friend, mentor, or support group where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts without judgment.
For example, in James 1:5, we’re reminded, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” This verse emphasizes that it’s not just acceptable to seek wisdom—it’s encouraged. God’s promise to provide answers freely and without judgment serves as a reminder that we can approach trusted individuals or even God Himself with our uncertainties.
Create a List of “Safe” Questions: Think of a few questions that have been nagging you but that you’d be comfortable discussing with a friend or mentor. For instance, “How can I improve in this area?” or “Why do I feel stuck when it comes to my spiritual growth?” Bringing these questions into a conversation can offer perspectives that you might not see on your own.
Practice Asking and Receiving Feedback: Once you ask, make sure to listen openly to the responses. Often, asking the question is only the first step; being receptive to others’ insights is just as important.
Real-Life Example: The Power of Vulnerability in Growth
Consider a real-life example of a teacher or professional mentor who shares stories of their own mistakes or misunderstandings. When they do, it’s likely that their students or mentees feel more comfortable asking their own questions. Many successful leaders have shared that early in their careers, they struggled with “stupid” questions that ultimately led to their greatest insights. These leaders often cite instances where they asked fundamental questions about their work or beliefs, questions that others were too afraid to ask, which in turn opened the door to new ways of thinking and solutions that others hadn’t considered.
Takeaway: Transforming the “Stupid” Question into Wisdom
Asking “stupid” questions takes courage, but these questions are often the beginning of wisdom. Like Nicodemus, Peter, and others who sought answers despite their doubts, we can grow by bringing our uncertainties to the surface, sharing them with trusted individuals, and remaining open to whatever insights arise. The answers to our simplest questions can lead us to profound understanding and lasting transformation.
Each time you feel self-doubt or uncertainty, remember that growth lies on the other side of your question. When you ask, seek feedback, and remain receptive, you’re actively engaging in the process of growth and discovery. Embracing vulnerability, confronting doubts, and seeking knowledge with an open heart are powerful ways to move forward, drawing you closer to self-awareness and authentic wisdom.
