Sands of Iwo Jima by Drive-By Truckers might be one of the best songs of all time because it makes me come very close to crying despite the subject matter (the plight of veterans) being something I've experienced through media a million times before and have never been particularly sensitive to.

Song Review: Rhiannon Giddens feat. Jason Isbell - “Yet to Be”

Most often thought of as a guitarist, Jason Isbell demonstrates his prowess as a vocalist while co-starring on Rhiannon Giddens’ “Yet to Be.”

“It was a true honor to have Jason's vocals on this - he’s a great singer, and he’s uncompromisingly himself,” Giddens said of Isbell before taking a shot at a clown named Aldean.

“I work with Jasons who unite, not Jasons who divide.”

The acoustic-rooted stomper is hopeful in the face of an ugly past and a still-troublesome present as Giddens and Isbell strut to the mic on the walking bassline of the chorus.

It’s a long, long way from where we’ve been/the here and now is better than it was back then/today may break your heart/but tomorrow holds the key/we’ve come so far but the best is yet to be

“Yet to Be” follows “You Louisiana Man” and the title track from Giddens’ You’re the One, which is due Aug. 18.

My first patch of the summer! He doesn't photograph well, but this is a Drive-By Truckers patch that I made for my boyfriend! Finished this 3 days ago but I only made this blog today. Self-critique under the cut!

I'm super proud of how the eye turned out, the contrast in the picture is thrown off but in person the thread I picked has the perfect amount of glow to it it's just awesome. I also think I nailed the texturing, again the picture doesn't show it bc idk how to photograph embroidery properly yet BUT the stitches on the wings are laid PERFECTLY it looks and feels feathery.

The outer border definitely could be better. I tried 3 different techniques and I definitely should have just stuck to one lmao. But now I know which one I like best (the bottom middle to right section) and I can use that for future patches! I do think it adds a little visual interest? And my bf likes it anyhow so that's all that matters.

If anyone with embroidery/sewing experience has any other critiques of this piece, feel free to let me know! I'm fully self taught, always looking for more tips!

𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥.

In the earliest days of the pandemic, when there seemed like no end in sight, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires were one of my greatest comforts. Sitting an entire ocean away, in a very different time zone, we would stay up into the small hours of the morning to watch their 'I So Lounging' livestream and hear every beautiful song.

I was already a fan, but those nights fixed them both in my heart as something to treasure.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit have a new album out, called Weathervanes, and it's pretty damn special, I recommend giving it a listen if you can.
