HYDROPONICS AS AN ADVANCE TECHNIQUE FOR CROP PRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Currently hydroponic cultivation is gaining popularity all over the world because of efficient resources management and quality food production. Soil based agriculture is now facing various challenges such as urbanization, natural disaster, climate change, indiscriminate use of chemicals and pesticides which is depleting the land fertility. Leading countries in hydroponic technology are Netherland, Australia, France, England, Israel, Canada and USA.
Hydroponics operations; benefits and limitations; performance of different crops like tomato, cucumber, pepper and leafy greens and water conservation by this technique. Several benefits of this technique are less growing time of crops than conventional growing; round the year production; minimal disease and pest incidence and weeding, spraying, watering etc can be eliminated. Commercially NFT technique has been used throughout the world for successful production  of leafy as well as other vegetables with 70 to 90% savings of water. For successful implementation of commercial hydroponic technology, it is important to develop low cost techniques which are easy to operate and maintain; requires less labour and lower overall setup and operational cost.
Hydroponics is a technique of growing plants in nutrient solutions with or without the use of an inert medium such as gravel, vermiculite, rockwool, peat moss, saw dust, coir dust, coconut fibre, etc. to provide mechanical support. Most hydroponic systems operate automatically to control the amount of water, nutrients and photoperiod based on the requirements of different plants.
In the present scenario, soil less cultivation might be commenced successfully and considered as alternative option for growing healthy food plants, crops or vegetables. Agriculture without soil includes hydro agriculture (Hydroponics), aqua agriculture (Aquaponics) and aerobic agriculture (Aeroponics) as well as substrate culture. Among these hydroponics techniques is gaining popularity because of its efficient management of resources and food production.
 HYDROPONIC STRUCTURES AND THEIR OPERATION
 Hydroponic system are customized and modified according to recycling and reuse of nutrient solution and supporting media. Commonly used systems are wick, drip, ebb-flow, deep water culture and nutrient film technique (NFT) which are described below :
 Wick System
This is simplest hydroponic system requiring no electricity, pump and aerators. Plants are placed in an absorbent medium like coco coir, vermiculite, perlite with a nylonwickrunning from plant roots into a reservoir of nutrient solution. Water or nutrient solution supplied to plants through capillary action. This system works well for small plants, herbs and spice and doesn’t work effectively that needs lot of water
 Ebb and Flow system
This is first commercial hydroponic system which works on the principle of flood and drain. Nutrient solution and water from reservoir flooded through a water pump to grow bed until it reaches a certain level and stay there for certain period of time so that it provide nutrients and moisture to plants. Besides, it is possible to grow different kinds of crops but the problem of root rot, algae and mold is very common therefore, somemodified system with filtration unit is required.
  Drip system
The drip hydroponic system is widely used method among both  home and commercial growers. Water or nutrient solution from the reservoir is provided to individual plant roots in appropriate proportion with the help of pump. Plants  are usually placed in moderately absorbent growing medium so that the nutrient solution drips slowly. Various crops can be grown systematically with more conservation of water.
Deep water culture system
In deep water culture, roots of plants are suspended in nutrient rich water and air is provided directly to the roots by an air stone. Hydroponics buckets system is classical example of this system. Plants are placed in net pots and  roots are suspended in  nutrient solution where they grow quickly in a large mass. It is mandatory to monitor the oxygen and nutrient concentrations, salinity and pH as algae and molds can grow rapidly in the reservoir. This system work well for larger plants that produce fruits especially cucumber and tomato, grow well in this system.
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system
NFT was developed in the mid  1960s in England by Dr. Alen Cooper to overcome the shortcomings of ebb and flow system. In this system,  water  or  a  nutrient solution circulates throughout the entire system; and enters the growth tray via a water pump without a time control. The system is slightly  slanted so that nutrient solution runs through roots and down back into a reservoir. Plants are placed in channel or tube with roots dangling  in  a  hydroponic  solution. Although,  roots  are  susceptible to fungal infection because they are constantly immersed in water or nutrient. In this system, many leafy green can easily be grown and commercially most widely used for lettuce production.

If you have a lot of potted plants, no doubt some of them are harder to water properly than others.
This can be for lots of reasons. A pot full to the rim with soil, very dry or sandy soil that doesn’t absorb water quickly, foliage that spills over the side and channels water away, dense roots that prevent water from percolating down, or just a pot that’s hard or awkward to reach with your watering can.
Whatever the reason, the result is usually the same – water that spills out of the planter instead of going into the pot, leaving the plant itself dry.
There are, of course, ways around this. You can bottom soak, change the soil, replant in a larger pot, move it to somewhere easier to water, etc., but they’re all inconvenient to one degree or another (especially for a lazy plantsman like myself).
Fortunately, I figured out a little hack that will slow-drip water the plant perfectly every time with just about zero effort.
Best of all, it super-easy to make, and costs next to nothing. All you need is an old plastic water bottle. Here’s how to do it.
Supplies:
One empty half-liter plastic water bottle with a cap
A small nail such as a finish nail
Hammer
Wire coat hanger (optional)
Supplies for the drip watering system
Instructions:
Remove the cap from the water bottle. Flip the cap over and place it on a bench or piece of wood.
Use a hammer and small nail to make two holes in the bottle cap
Using your nail and hammer, punch two small holes on either side of the cap’s interior. Push the nail through and wiggle it a bit to make sure the holes are clear of any plastic bits, but don’t make the holes too big or the water will pour out too fast.

Fill your water bottle with water and screw the cap on to it. If you’re watering a smaller pot, you don’t need to fill the bottle all the way; just enough to give your plant a good drink without flooding it.
That’s it! You’re now ready to drip water (I told you it was easy).
To drip water plants:
Simply flip filled the water bottle upside down in your pot so the cap is touching the soil, but not covered by it (you don’t want the soil to block the holes).
If your plant is large enough to support the bottle or you have something nearby to lean the bottle against (a wall, another pot, etc.), just balance the bottle and leave it to drain into the pot.

If the plant is too small or there’s no support for the inverted bottle, make a support for it from a wire coat hanger.

Clip your coat hanger and make a loop for the bottle at one end. Then bend the hanger at the end of the loop to make a straight piece several inches longer than the bottle itself. When you’re ready to drip water, push the long end of the hanger into the pot, flip the filled water bottle over, and slide it into the loop. Viola! A free standing drip system support.

If everything is working right, you will see air bubbles slowly rising in the bottle from one hole while the other releases water into the soil drip-by-drip. Don’t worry if the bottle draws a little soil into it. As long as it doesn’t block the hole, it’s just fine.

If you don’t see air bubbles rising in the bottle, it’s probably because the soil is fine or compacted and blocking the holes in the cap. ).
You can fix that by putting a little stick under the cap, or adjusting the coat hanger holder, to give it a small amount of airspace between the soil and the bottle cap.
A half-liter drip bottle will drain completely in 20-30 minutes, soaking the soil thoroughly without splashing or knocking out soil.
I use this method for watering succulents with really dry, sandy soil as well as house plants like spider plants that like crowed roots and make it difficult for water to soak in. I also use it on hanging pots that are hard to reach with a watering can or hose.
This drip water system also works great with seedlings and small plants in pots or in the ground where you want to target water delivery without washing away soil or mulch.

Sadly I don't have a solution to your problem, but I really like this system. It seems easy to do, and only applies the water to the area where it is needed.
Advice needed
I've got a drip system set up in my garden since yesterday. I pour water in a high placed bucket and let gravity push it around a drip hose. It works like a charm and is definitely gonna help me save water. Everytime I use the gardenhose I feel like 50% just ends up on the paving stones and not on the plants.

The only problem I've encountered so far is that the water drains waaayy faster than I want. 6 litres is gone in approx 1 hour. My bucket hold about 18 litres of water, which would be gone in under 3 hours. I don't know how much people usually use when just using a hose, but this seems like a lot. Especially if I want it to water throughout the day.
I tried slowing it down by covering the hose opening in the bucket with some cotton wadding and tying a rubberband around it. This did slow it down, but I feel like it only has enough pressure to reach half the hose this way. Which means that the plants supplied by the second half of the hose are barely receiving any water.
Can I solve this or should I just let it be?
