Hi! I just started reading Black Butler again after five years! I love this manga but what always drives me crazy is I can never get a read on Sebastian. There are some chapters that give snips of actual thought from him (like when the UT shows his record while on the ship) but not too many. There is one fairly consistent thing that comes up where Sebastian considers Ciel's contrasting moments of confidence and fear/dependence and then smirks ominously. What is your interpretation of him here?
In those particular moments? 🤔 This tends to happen after our earl has staked his claim as “Ciel Phantomhive”, the head of the Phantomhive family, the rightful earl, the rightful heir, etc. Though he is the rightful head of the family, until real Ciel pops up again, Sebastian knows his claim to be “Ciel” is false. And he has teased his young master for telling lies, when the demon is not allowed to. Sebastian might also be amused just how different the young master is from the persona he typically wears around others. He can be brave, but he’s also very young and vulnerable.
If we look at the “meal” aspect of this — that Sebastian is preparing a soul to devour it — we might say Sebastian is thinking about the effect that all the lies and the false portrayal are having on the “flavor” of our earl’s soul. Our earl’s experiences are like seasoning, herbs, and spices to the flavor his soul will have. The meal might also become “larger” as he gains experiences, good or bad.
There is also possibly a parental pride aspect to all this, as Sebastian has essentially raised his young master these past almost four years. Of course, it could also simply be seen as the pride a gardener might have for growing their own produce... or a rancher might have for raising their own livestock.... 👨‍🌾 to 🍽

koszulka liverpool dziecieca  człowiekiem do gry
koszulka liverpool dziecieca  człowiekiem do gry. do środkowej pomocy.

I'd like your opinion on this too! :) In Chapter 137 when Sebastian is summoned, all of the "members" there are either trying to make a contract/asking for things or they are panicking. BUT, on pg 3 (maybe 4) there is a panel on the middle right on which the focal point is a hooded figure just calmly watching while others around are panicking. Do you think this could be anything? UT maybe? Or am I looking too far into it? To me, it seemed a little too out of place to just be nothing.
Oh, this is definitely something, but it’s not UT, or he would have intervened. He apparently struggled to get there when he did, which was just in time to save real Ciel’s body from the fire. He didn’t want real Ciel’s body to be destroyed, like Vincent’s was. Which also adds to the idea that the fire at Phantomhive Manor wasn’t entirely “natural”.
This is the “mystery person” that is tagged in several posts here. Those posts should also be tagged as “ch137”.
So far, my best guess has been John Brown, who pretty much cannot be human. Also note that Sebastian told Sieglinde that sometimes demons will show up to rituals at random or on a whim. Sebastian was definitely summoned, but another demon (or angel) who happened to be around anyway (already on this side of the “river”), could pop up. And, so far, John Brown is the best bet; he even seems to have a contract with the queen, and he could have been there because of an order from Victoria.
The only other possibility I have been able to consider is that the mystery person from ch137 could be a reaper or even a “reaper superior” (whom I believe isn’t a reaper but more like an angel, since I don’t think reapers would be allowed to oversee their own punishments). Even though William manages the London branch of the soul collection department, I doubt he’s really considered to be a “superior”.
Since we know that reapers sometimes infiltrate human organizations or groups to investigate unusual, mass deaths, this is a major possibility. Grelle might have been sent to investigate Madam Red... but definitely got personally involved. William investigated the circus troupe and later collected souls (with Ronald) at Kelvin’s manor, while Grelle was sent to merely collect circus members’ souls at Phantomhive Manor. Ronald was sent to investigate the deaths expected on the Campania. Sascha and Ludger/Rudgar might have initially been assigned to the expected deaths in the “Witch’s Village” and the surrounding forest... and not just sent to collect souls. Besides, they meet up with William and Grelle, and that meeting was all about information on this investigation. Now we know Ronald was sent to investigate the goings-on at Athena Sanatorium in Wiltshire, and that pretty much means there will be deaths there, even if there have already been some.
If this mystery person is a reaper, I’d say it’s probably William, but there are also reapers we’ve never met. Heck, it even could have been Alan or Eric, since it happened before the events of The Most Beautiful Death in the World. If it’s a “reaper superior” but not actually a reaper... that could still be John Brown (if superiors are angels or something) or someone we haven’t even met just yet... that we know of.
This person is quite mysterious, indeed! So, please check the #mystery person and #ch137 tags on this post for older posts about it.
Thanks!

Come to think of it... it’s probably not William. He introduces himself in the Ripper arc, but it isn’t until the circus arc that he’s acknowledging that the demon and the boy must have a contract. As if this has finally been confirmed that the demon is “collared” or “on a leash”, etc. If William had been the mystery person in ch137, he should have hinted at it then... if not to Sebastian, at least to the readers. Right? Like, William should have been more knowledgeable about them. So... probably not William.
Unless William only makes the “starving demon” comment because he knows just how long Sebastian’s contract has been, so far. That it started quite some time before Madam Red was killed.

Using Google translation:
I remember my mother when she was a child raised a sheep and grew fond of it, but they ate it anyway. My mother was sad, because she loved the sheep, but she had to eat it anyway. If Sebastian ends up like this, I think it's the ending he deserves: Ciel's soul will cause him indigestion, or he will have Ciel's feelings. Sebastián tells Ciel that he loves him, that he loves him like a child loves a sheep that his parents gave him to raise and make her fat so that the sheep was dinner.
Yeah, pretty much. And, as I have said many times before, I do expect that (if Sebastian does get to have his meal, and I expect him to) our earl’s soul to somehow have a lasting effect on Sebastian.
In order to get major character development from a demon, it’s got to be a major event. Right? We’ve seen hints of things effecting Sebastian’s emotions, like finding out Beast had died (and probably putting the details together and knowing how she died)... and even more so when Sebastian discovers that Agni had died (a more brutally painful death than Beast, I should think, since she would have been nearly obliterated in the blink of an eye). But Sebastian seems to get over these instances well enough. They might tug on his emotions still, but we aren’t seeing it. To finally “break” the demon, which is probably what it would require for major character development, perhaps the final events leading up to the end of the contract and then devouring a very special soul would do it.
In s2, Hannah was so overwhelmed by Luka’s gratitude before she devoured his soul that she cried afterwards and took up Luka’s desire to be reunited with his brother. Once she had done so, she was pretty much content to return to Hell.
The fact that Sebastian has already devoured the older mirror twin’s soul might have some effect on why he has such an extremely strong contractual bond to our earl. Real Ciel hated being “torn away” from his younger twin, and Sebastian is also particularly distraught when he’s not able/allowed to be near his young master (for long). To me, that’s all a matter of the contractual bond being strengthened by familial bonds... regardless of whether either of them can acknowledge it.
So, what would Sebastian actually do, if he devours our earl’s soul, and that act (or the combining of the twins’ souls within him) changes him in a significant way?
He could feel completely satisfied and leave, swearing to never return to the human realm. Just like what I’ve always gathered from the emotions studies that Yana-san did of Sebastian. She didn’t know what expression to give him for “satisfaction” or being “satiated”, exactly, so she had him turned away, as if to leave. “Satiety”:
Tumblr media
He could also stay behind, in the human realm, at least long enough to help pick up the pieces for the humans who have been left behind, in the wake of the final events. A lot of that depends on who is actually still alive by then. Out of the people who were directly involved. That would fit best with Mother3 theory, since the Dark Dragon restores order to the world after the upheaval caused when it was woken up by Lucas. The dead and reanimated older mirror twin brother (Claus) sacrifices himself, so that his younger twin, Lucas, can be the one to wake the Dark Dragon and give it his good heart. The Dark Dragon accepts this good heart and follows Lucas’s will. It cannot bring back the dead, but it uses its power to restore the health of the living. And it generally restores order to the world, so the people can rebuild their towns and their lives.
And, well, then the demon could return to his realm....
