Dreamthief (Rogue Archetype)
Tumblr media
 The idea of a thief of dreams hearkens back to folklore and mythology of beings that rule over sleep and dreams, everything from the Greek Morpheus to the Sandman of Scandinavian folklore and beyond, painting the idea of a whimsical trickster that grants sleep and pleasant dreams, and even occasionally steals away bad dreams, is a pretty iconic ideal.
In Pathfinder, the so-called dreamthieves are less otherworldly beings and more gifted mortals, in this case, they are those who have a mass of crystalized dreamstuff in their soul which gifts them with otherworldly abilities tied to sleep, emotions, and dreams.
Some may be benevolent protectors, hunting predators from both the Dimension of Dreams and more mundane nocturnal predators alike, while others may be more akin to predators themselves. Others use their abilities as a means to an end as spies, thieves, and the like as well.
Exactly how they came by the shard that grants them their powers varies greatly, some find and merge with it in a rare dream, while others might manifest one due traumatic events related to the world of dreams. Of the latter, some may be survivors of attacks from otherworldly beings, or have witnessed some otherworldly or uncanny event.
Either way, a dreamthief boasts some unlikely but powerful abilities.
 The core, both figuratively and literally, of the dreamthief is their dreamshard, each one of which has an emotional focus similar to that of a spiritualist’s phantom, to the point where they gain the various abilities associated with phantoms of that emotion. Furthermore, they can charge any weapon or strike they make with that emotion, allowing them to add various effects that a phantom would normally add to their slam attack to their ordinary weapon rolls.
As one might expect, these rogues have greater control over their own minds and dreaming selves, both when sleeping normally and when entering the Dimension of Dreams by other means.
With a touch, mystical tricksters can steal away negative emotions and sensations, soothing their allies.
Eventually, they also master magic to delve into the dreams of others to learn things. Later on, they can even use dreams to travel far and wide.
An interesting archetype, combining the skills and tricks of the rogue class with phantom abilities and dream-related powers. What’s more, unlike the Id Rager, this archetype actually works without any corrective homebrewing! Just remember that you’re not getting much burst damage out of it due to the loss of sneak attack, but the otherworldly powers this archetype grants can be quite appealing to those seeking supernatural utility. With that in mind, I’d recommend at least some focus on information gathering and spycraft.
 It’s not a major leap in logic to assume that these dreamthieves would have personalities or emotional baggage that reflects the emotional focus in their dreamshard. After all, in many cases, the dreamshard either is or imprints upon a part of their psyche. However, what about those that gained their dreamshard by other methods? Would they feel like these emotions are thrust upon them? Did the dreamshard seek them because of the emotions they already possessed, or perhaps they have no special connection to that emotion at all?
  Though it has been years since he saw them. Lacu, also known as the Dream Wolf, thinks of his former clan every day, and carries on in their absence, channeling his dedication into protecting dreamers, having become something of a local legend.
 Many a noble lives in fear of the Nightmare Bite, a jorogumo assassin who possesses a knack for slaying her targets as they sleep, avoiding all defenses by slipping in through their very dreams. To protect themselves, many turn to alchemical drugs that induce dreamless sleep. However, there may be consequences to such manipulation.
 Masho was the sight of a great disaster that no one ever saw, for a tremendous explosion, the result of a great conflict, occurred on the ethereal plane, sending shockwaves into the dreamlands that plagued the citizens for weeks afterwards. Since that time, people have spontaneously begun manifesting strange new abilities tied directly to their emotions.

Ich weiß, was du dir erhoffst, was du ersehnst und was tief in dir schlummert. Deine geheimsten Träume liegen dort verborgen und ich nehme sie dir.
Du fängst sowieso nichts mit ihnen an.

This took... at least 15 hours in total, I think...? Jeez, I really don't know, but here he is! My new rogue, Ignazio! A thief working for the Oilbird's Nest in Hyewn. After an incident with a Dreamthief Hag, he's had a part of his dreaming mind stolen-- more specifically the memories of his family before they were wrongfully imprisoned. He's determined to get his memories back with the help of Aerwyn the Dreamweaver-- a fledgling deity of dreams.

Books I Read in 2023
* = Re-read
Check out past years: 2012, 2013 (skipped), 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018,  2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Follow me on Goodreads to get these reviews as they happen. 1) A Book of Blades: Rogues in the House Presents edited by L.D. Whitney This book, assembled by the great guys behind the premier podcast in the genre, is an excellent way to sample a breadth of contemporary Sword & Sorcery fiction! My favorite story was "The Blood of Old Shard" by John R. Fultz, with Scott Oden and Howard Andrew Jones' tales close behind, and there were no duds in the mix. "The Blood..." really surprised me with a heart and inventiveness which the opening doesn't give away yet, you realize upon finishing, deftly sets up. 2) Fires of Azeroth by C.J. Cherryh Left my big ol’ spoiler-laden review on Goodreads for ya. 3) Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time by Teju Cole 4) The Citadel of Forgotten Myths by Michael Moorcock *5) Neuromancer by William Gibson 6) The Expert System's Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky 7) The Expert System’s Champion by Adrian Tchaikovsky I confess I finished the first book in this series having enjoyed myself, but wondering if I'd remember what I'd read a year from now. I don't have that concern with its follow-up. Tchaikovsky has enriched the world he set up in the first installment quite nicely, and I hope I get to explore it further in a third. 8) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 3 9) Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner 10) The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday by Saad Z. Hossain 11) The Dreamthief's Daughter: A Tale of the Albino by Michael Moorcock 12) Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino Do you think you’d enjoy hearing Tarantino discuss mainly his childhood and adolescence re: movies that meant a lot to him during that period? Congrats, this is extremely that. It could not be more that. 13) The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe 14) Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life After Which Everything Was Different by Chuck Palahniuk Roughly 70/30 instructional / biographical. Has a lot of good advice, focusing on a more literary mode than classic genre stylings, all in a voice and coming from a place any Palahniuk fan will be familiar with (I would have been stunned NOT to find something like the "Voice of Authority" snippet in a writing book by Palahniuk). Entertaining and providing what mostly felt like useful, actionable advice, I'd say it can be handy for writers who aren't knowledgeable of the author's works, but knowing at least a couple of his books can help contextualize his advice so you can determine which parts are right for you or not. 15) Death Angel's Shadow by Karl Edward Wagner 16) Night Winds by Karl Edward Wagner 17) Wyngraf Issue #1 Edited by Nathaniel Webb 18) Rakefire and Other Stories by Jason Ray Carney 19) The White Lion by Scott Oden 20) Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts by Patrick Syme, Abraham Gottlob Werner (Illustrator) 21) Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin 22) Lord of a Shattered Land by Howard Andrew Jones *23) Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer 24) Authority by Jeff VanderMeer 25) Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer *26) The Sailor on the Seas of Fate by Michael Moorcock 27) Kundo Wakes Up by Saad Z. Hossain 28) Swords in the Shadows, Edited by Cullen Bunn 29) The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi 30) Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World by Naomi Klein 31) The Encyclopedia of Amazons: Women Warriors from Antiquity to the Modern Era by Jessica Amanda Salmonson 32) New Edge Sword & Sorcery #1, Edited by Oliver Brackenbury 33) New Edge Sword & Sorcery #2, Edited by Oliver Brackenbury 34) A Book of Blades: Volume II: Rogues in the House Podcast Presents, Edited by L.D. Whitney 35) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 4, Spring 2023: A Magazine of Dark Fantasy and Sword and Sorcery, Edited by OMQ 36) The Wingspan of Severed Hands by Joe Koch 37) The Sword of Rhiannon by Leigh Brackett 38) Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle 39) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 5, Edited by OMQ STATS Non-Fiction: 6 Fiction: 33 Poetry Collections: 0 Comic Trades: 0 Wrote Myself: 2

After my longest-running Pathfinder game, Amidst Shining Boughs, has started up again, the response has been incredible...! ;_;
I'm so happy with everyone being so happy with getting back into the fray, despite some issues with Foundry VTT (not Foundry's fault, we've just been running this game for over 3 years so some things are bound to break after so many updates).
The story has kicked back into full swing, the Nightmare Queen has returned in her full witchy glory to cause more problems for the heroes, and another battle has begun, this time for the fate of the last bastion of light against the encroaching darkness of the Nightmare. The Imperial City of Miziro, last major free city on the continent of Brutera, is under siege by horrid creatures swarming the streets, but even this is but a diversion, casting eyes away from the true threat: the Dream Seed is dying, slowly rotting under the watchful gaze of the Kuri family, nobles aligned with the Nightmare's designs. Now, moments before its death- the very death of dreaming- it arrives like a festering bomb atop Heaven's Shrine, high above the city.
Celli, Luca, Marwind, and Tomomi rush through the bay to The Calamity, airship captained by the infamous Travesty and one-way ticket to danger. With the laugh of adventure and the churning of engines, the ship takes off into the sky, carrying the party to thwart the nightmarish plans of the Dreamthief Hag Genevieve Grimwhim and save the dreams of the hundreds upon thousands of souls below- both figuratively and literally.
Deep below the rumbling earth, Silvano, Sun, and Fay have finished defeating an assassination attempt on the vampire king himself and have just learned of the hag's plan from a dominated thrall. Yet even as the attack begins to string above, a greater threat looms on the horizon... a threat against not only Miziro, but all of Eos, lest all be bathed in fire and fury, and the Dragon War be kindled anew...

Deleted that last post about the RPZine Maker affair.
Man, I'd just royally fucked that one up.
I kept the original post around in a .txt on my computer in order to be able to refer to it later, and re-reading it, it really was just me being an irresponsible failure of a writer.
I failed to communicate the idea I wanted to -the feeling I wanted to - and instead hurt a large amount of people for no good reason.
I'm sorry. I'll think twice as I write anything similar again. I was attacked, sure, but the way I tried to discredit people's hurt was also unacceptable.
Thank you to @malakhimsoft and @ashe-dreamthief for moving in to help de-escalate the situation.
Just to emphasise this again: That zine is fucking amazing. Get it. It's free and it's a strong 40+ pages of cool as hell art.

what's the origin behind their name? [either within or outside of their lore]
In lore: Elsie's mother is a big fan of old-fashioned names. She never revealed exactly how she came up with her name, but Elsie at one point found an encyclopedia of old first names and their meanings on her mother's shelf. She probably just picked one out there. Elsie's younger sister is named Elenore, and her name comes from the Turtles' song, which is quite catchy after all.
Outside the lore: I like names that can be abbreviated nicely and that have an unusual but beautiful sound. When I was thinking about what my dreamthief might be called, I eventually landed on the name of my favorite music album by The Horrible Crowes, because it's simply called "Elsie" (although there's no song on it with the same name). I liked the sound of it right away.
