Today is a message from your higher self and guides. Please take what resonates and leave the rest. The cards used are from The Soul Reflection’s Manifesting Love by Nadine Swiger. (Available on Etsy) . Fir some, you will know exactly how the cards pertain to your dreams. For others, there is a longing. There may be dreams, goals, or even changes that you have been trying to make happen. Your guides say that there is some more healing that needs to take place first. Dreams can become reality, but you need to allow what is not working to crumble. You are very much protected at this time, so no need to fear. Release what needs to be release and see those dreams begin to take shape and form. Meditate. Ask your angels to send help. They want to see things healed and you move forward. . . . #oracleoftheday #oraclereading #higherself #higherselfhealing #higherselfmessages #releaseandheal #healingyourspace #healingyoursoul #findingahigherpurpose #healforyourfuture #dreamhealing #dreamhealer #manifestinglove💚 #manifestingloveandlight #higherlove #soulreflectionoraclecards #nadineswiger #manifestingloveoracle #soulreflectionoracle https://www.instagram.com/p/CoCjLHVOdo7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Preliminary Round
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys
Endorsement from submitter: "Excellent first-contact book that really delves into the personal as political and centers around a queer family."
On a warm March night in 2083, Judy Wallach-Stevens wakes to a warning of unknown pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay. She heads out to check what she expects to be a false alarm--and stumbles upon the first alien visitors to Earth. These aliens have crossed the galaxy to save humanity, convinced that the people of Earth must leave their ecologically-ravaged planet behind and join them among the stars. And if humanity doesn't agree, they may need to be saved by force.
The watershed networks aren't ready to give up on Earth. Decades ago, they rose up to exile the last corporations to a few artificial islands, escape the dominance of nation-states, and reorganize humanity around the hope of keeping their world liveable. By sharing the burden of decision-making, they've started to heal the wounded planet.
But now corporations, nation-states, and networks all vie to represent humanity to these powerful new beings, and if any one accepts the aliens' offer, Earth may be lost. With everyone’s eyes turned skyward, everything hinges on the success of Judy's effort to create understanding, both within and beyond her own species.
Science fiction, first contact, climate fiction, family, adult
Mindtouch by M.C.A. Hogarth (The Dreamhealers series)
Endorsement from submitter: "Delightful cross-species queerplatonic relationship."
Seersana University is worlds-renowned for its xenopsychology program, producing the Alliance's finest therapists, psychiatric nurses and alien researchers. When Jahir, one of the rare and reclusive Eldritch espers, arrives on campus, he's unprepared for the challenges of a vast and multicultural society… but fortunately, second-year student Vasiht'h is willing to take him under his wing. Will the two win past their troubles and doubts and see the potential for a once-in-a-lifetime partnership?

Oh dear. I am a third through Legends and Lattes, and I already feel that this book is going to end up on my List Of Infamy for 2024. Like, the concept is so good?? You could do so much with this premise?? And then it doesn't.
Listen. There are, generally, two reasons why someone would do a "people doing mundane things in a fantasy setting" story. You are either there for the world, or you are there for the characters. The world, we still know close to nothing about, beyond that it has generic DND vibes. What is the climate? What species exist in there, and how do they interact with each other? What is the role of adventurers in this society? What even is the city we're in like, beyond having a harbour, a market, a university and a main street?? And the characters, they seem to have zero internal conflict. Viv just left her life of adventuring and killing monsters, and it doesn't seem to impact her at all? Does she miss it? If so, what parts? Who were the people in her party? Even the ones who already appeared "on-screen", we only know their names. You mentioned that there is some prejudice against both orcs and succumbi, are you planning to elaborate on that?? AT ALL???
Just. *frustrated groan*

Note
you mention you read a lot in a recent ask about your interests - do you have any particularly cherished favorites? rare gems? genres or tropes you enjoy?
The majority of what I read is fanfic, but if I recced fanfics I'd be here for years and frankly I cannot be bothered. I do have a lot of book recs too though. I'll just do a few of the main ones that come to mind rn.
Most recent fave: Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir. Same author as The Martian, again with a storyline that I would describe more as PvE than PvP, which I personally really enjoy and can never find enough of. I only bought this book like a month ago but have already reread it three times. I want a hundred more books with the same kind of alien first contact and interaction and mutual problem solving that this book has. The premise: the sun has a space algae problem, and this is going to result in the death of everyone on Earth in a few decades if a solution isn't found. Also looking for a solution: at least one other alien species whose sun, similarly, has a space algae problem. To quote, "Astrophage on my star. Bad, bad, bad."
Overall fave author: M.C.A Hogarth. Most of their work is for an overarching universe called the Peltedverse, which comprises multiple series. These are extremely queer sci-fi series involving humans, aliens, and human engineered furry races. Dreamhealers is the best series to start with, but my favourite of the Peltedverse series is Prince's Game (warning: challenging content). There's also separate series like the Stone Moon trilogy (warning: challenging content), which I also adore but only recommend if you like things that rip out your heart and stamp on it. Overall Hogarth has probably been the biggest influence on my writing style in the last decade, and I love what they do with characters.
Last rec of the day: the Scholomance Trilogy, Naomi Novik. Novik is a pretty well known name in fandom for a lot of reasons, but I feel like fewer people are aware of this series than the Temeraire series. This book is about what if there was magic but being magical was so heinously dangerous due to all the things trying to eat you that people end up doing really fucked up things to survive and that's now the foundation of magical society, and also shoving all your kids into a hell school full of monsters is legitimately the best way of getting them to adulthood uneaten. I find Scholomance has a vibe which makes it unusually rereadable, so I have read it more times than I have most book series. All three are good books but mostly first and third imo, sometimes when I'm doing a full reread I skip some or most of the second one.

Review: Mindtouch (The Dreamhealers #1) MCA Hogarth
I am a great fan of storytelling that inspires us to create a healthy and humane future. These sorts of stories can come from many different genres. Right now I am focussing on #solarpunk, #hopepunk, and #cosycore. Also, I am adding my own literary genre #funkyfi. This is fiction to do with functional behaviour in basically functional worlds. Utopia can set unrealistic expectations. Good things and bad things will continue to happen for as long as we exist, but if we all learn how to behave in a functional manner, we are more likely to sort things out.
Mindtouch by Hogarth is about a future where a variety of animals and even some humans are the result of genetic engineering. The sapient animals were created to perform dangerous tasks for humans, and at some point in the past left Earth in order to find freedom by colonising other solar systems. One set of humans, the Eldritch, were developed to live long lives. Despite the long lives, they are not reproducing sufficiently to preserve their species.
The story itself is about the friendship that develops between a "Pelted" person and an Eldritch person when they become roommates at a medical university. Part of this relationship is also shared with a group of child patients who are terminally ill. We do get a certain amount of futuristic technology, but it's not clear if this is particularly appropriate technology, ie solar-powered. However, we do have alien peoples who have learned from human mistakes. We learn about the wisdoms of their various cultures, as well as some of their weaknesses. Ultimately, this story is about how these peoples uniquely and well sort out their various emotional challenges through introspection, friendship, and kindness. Hogarth writes in an intelligent manner with enough twists and turns in the plot to keep things interesting. Mindtouch is not high literature, but it is exceptionally competant, and quite an achievement for someone without the help of a professional editor. We can all use professional editors for long projects like this! I felt uplifted by it, and have ordered the second book in the duology in order to find out what happens to the characters. This has all the charm of a Becky Chambers book. I can recommend it! Peace and kindness, KPhelps

Oh, they definitely exist, if you know where to look. Which, I get, is always tricky. The notes and reblogs already have a bunch of good recommendations, but here are mine:
The Margin Street Zeroes series by Robin Banks has university-aged characters, who try to somehow manage Life, and also gods. All queer, all neurodivergent. One of the three main characters who is there from the beginning (Ben) has an asexual coming out storyline in book 3, when the group is joined by an out ace character (AK). They end up in a very cute relationship.
Space Cadets by Robin Banks (I know, again), is about a group of young people working on a spaceship, who kind of inherit the ship when their dystopian Government sends it to attack a peaceful colony, and instead they run away. They then have to figure out what to do next. The main character is a trans man with ADHD, who ends up in a nonsexual relationship with one of the boys, who also has ADHD. They are both on the asexual spectrum.
The Dreamhealers series by M.C.A. Hogarth is about two young men from two different alien species, who meet at university and form a telepathic bond. They then have to figure out, what they want to do with their lives, and eventually move to a space station to set up a psychology praxis. The story is very feel-good, but does deal with some heavy themes. It also has got incredible worldbuilding. One of the two protagonists is from a species that is naturally asexual, and their relationship, while very close and dedicated, is explicitly platonic.
The Sulien series by Jo Walton is an Arthurian AU where our Sir Lancelot gets replaced by an asexual woman. The word is never used, but it couldn't be clearer. Very, VERY good series, but not always easy to read, structuraly speaking. Also, serious CN for rape.
Asexual Fairy Tales by Elizabeth Hopkinson. Exactly what it sounds like, it's fairy tales. You are never too old for fairy tales. There are two more books by the same author, but for some reason, it isn't marked as a series.
Chuck Tinge's no-sex stories. Are about people not having sex. Some of the protagonists are actually aspec, some decide not to for some other reason. Chuck Tingle is a master at surreal writing, so these can get WEIRD.
Bonus:
Ein Meer aus Feuer by Evelyne Aschwanden Only exists in German, and the asexual character is a side character, so I don't want to count it too much. But she does the thing where she saves her entire crew from mermaids by not getting enchanted, and the story itself is very low on romance, so that it is more of an adventure story.
Idk but it's kind of sad that adult books/stories with aspec characters aren't really a thing (MCs or at least important side characters). It's always YA stuff and I really don't want to read books written for 12-18 year olds because I'm old and grumpy and can't relate to their experiences, lol.

Book Shout-outs for Pride Month #2:
Asexual edition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Row One: Stand-Alones:
Asexual Fairy Tales by Elizabeth Hopkinson: Exactly what it says on the tin, a collection of asexual fairy tale retellings. Hopkinson has written two more collections like this.
Space Cadets by Robin Banks: In a dystopian future, five cadets are the only survivors of a cruel space battle. They take their ship and run, and have to consequently figure out, what to do next.
Baker Thief by Claudie Arsenault: New in the city, a police officer chases after a thief who broke into her home and stole her expensive power source, only to stumble on a conspiracy.
Row Two: Series with two books:
The King's Peace/The King's Name (Sulien series) by Jo Walton: Arthurian retelling set in an alternate universe. The main character and narrator is the equivalent of our Sir Lancelot, the King's best and most trusted general. She narrates the story from their first meeting to after his death.
Dread Nation/Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland: Alternate history where the American Civil War ended in a zombie apocalypse, and people of color are being forced to fight the zombies. The asexual character, Katherine, is there from the beginning on, but only becomes a POV character in the second book.
Row Three: Series with more than two books:
The Dreamhealers series by M.C.A Hogarth: In a space fantasy world with many different species living together in harmony, it follows the lives of two psychology students (later doctors), who form a mental link and become platonic life partners.
The Margin Street Zeroes series by Robin Banks: Follows the lives of three (later four) very broke, very neurodivergent and very queer university students who are also harassed by gods and magic. They form a found family that actively defies societal expectations. The asexual storyline only starts in book 3, but one of the two asexual characters, Ben, is there all along. The other, AK, also only joins in book 3.
I probably could scratch together some more, especially if I add in my TBR list, but these are my go-tos.

3, 4 and 7 for the ask x
thanks for the ask!📚
3. What’s something you read recently and wanted to argue with (either with the book or the author or the fans)?
buckle up for a good ol' book rant!
so the dreamhealers series - a cozy slice of life scifantasy story about two neurodivergent individuals forming a queerplatonic partnership - is, it turns out, the origin story of the characters which the author mca hogarth has conceived a long time before as side characters in a completely different arc in her peltedverse. i assume she started developing said arc when she was a teen and wrote the dreamhealers when she was already an adult. the result is two stories that tonally and structurally couldn't be more different but that both feature these two characters which naturally resulted in characterization consistency problems. you can't take a weird lil guy from a pastoral novel where everyone just vibes and put him into a high stakes high fantasy plot without it taking a toll on their personality. now, this is not a problem if you finish the dreamhealers and just stop after book 4, however comma goodreads shows that there's this novella following the last book and you assume it's gonna be some sort of cute epilogue and you pick it up and it turns out it's not that but rather a short backstory of the characters mca hogarth wrote for her high stakes arc BEFORE she wrote the full version of their backstory aka the dreamhealers. are you still following? anyways i read the novella and was appalled at how jarring the difference is between jahir and vasiht'h in the series and this novella which, if you read in the order i'm reading in, basically serves as a link between the dreamhealers and prince's game. on the one hand, it's cool to see how much mca hogarth grew as a writer and how much more nuanced and relatable she made her characters in the course of their development. but on the other, it made me have unpleasant ruminations about what is canon and what isn't. this novella feels like a retcon designed to make jahir and vasiht'h fit a new narrative. however, it was written before the dreamhealers - does that then make dreamhealers a retcon and not as canon? both things can't be canon bc jahir and vasiht'h in the series would never do things they do in the novella. which makes it feel like a fanfic written by someone who doesn't understand the source material.
phew did it feel good to get all of this off my chest! tl dr please read the dreamhealers but under no circumstances read "family"
4. What are your top 3 comfort reads?
to be completely honest i don't typically re-read books for comfort purposes. that's what fanfics are for!✨ the top 3 i used to re-read the most (but not in quite a while tho) are lessons (aftg), astray (captive prince) and this unfinished theseus/the minotaur fic which i believe was called asterius und which, as i was distraught to discover, had been privated by the author😭 such tasteful monsterfucking literature i have never known before or since
7. What book do you love but usually not recommend because it’s weird or intense, etc?
i love aftg but i will rather bleach my soul by reading that fandom's discourse again than recommend it to anyone. and to be clear, it's not bc i think the seires is weird or poorly written or not good enough for general audiences - it's bc no one is worthy of studying the sacred texts except for me and a couple other initiated intellectuals
book ask
#book tag#with comfort reads i need instant gratification that only my fave fanfics can provide#the family novella is wrong on many levels but ngl the aroace qpp stuff felt the most heinous to me#and i can't even be mad cause ik it's not bc the author suddenly changed her mind about them#on the contrary it's bc she wrote the prequel series later in her life#when she had better understanding of what aroaceness and qpp can look like#i was specifically irritated by them calling each other brother - and she improved on that too#vasiht'h says in dreamhearth they're the very best of friends closer than any brother or lover#and in dreamstorm he calls jahir my forever-friend#so she clearly gave some thought to more appropriate nomenclature lol#and jahir's thing with his cousin who he never mentions throughout the dreamhealers books is just. major ew vibes#and she improved on that too!#in the piano short story she found a very elegant way to make a point of him not really being aroace without being gross about it#but does all that improvement really matter if she published the other stuff and it's canon too?#at least make this novella not show as part of dreamhealers so that people aren't left with a sour taste in their mouth#all of this is aggravated by the novella's high rating bc i assume most people read it long ago#when the dreamhealers didn't exist yet and they had nothing to compare it to#but even so i think i would've disliked it#it just does feel like it was conceived by a teenager#who has like. weird kinks and notions#so i will probably not try prince's game any time soon#since it's tainted by bad!jahir and wrong!vasiht'h#but i do want to see an eldritch who fucks so ig my next stop in the peltedverse is earthrise
