Artist: beck t-t

Description: Great exile animatic with amazing use of framing and composition. Beautiful and artistic, with a flower motif that only makes sense at the end. Tommyinnit is just like Clarissa Dalloway in that he wants to walk into the sea and drown himself.

Description: This is where I show my own bias, because I really love snarkmine’s entire series of MS Paint dream smp mini-animatics. They’re all under a minute each, but they really do capture the essence of the dream smp. This is a great one, that I especially love for the meta subtext—yes, the dream smp is “some crappy artwork that took way, way too long to draw.” Tommy labels a drawing of him and Tubbo as “My Discs.” Yes!

Description: Another in snarkmine’s MS Paint series. I love animatics that frame Tommy’s arc on the Dream smp as a coming-of-age narrative, and this one definitely has that vibe.

Artist: snarkmine

Description: The last of snarkmine’s MS Paint series. On both a meta and a narrative level, the dream smp is about cycles of violence, and this animatic really captures that—but what really puts it over the top for me is the linking of this cycle to Tommyinnit’s discs (”the needle returns to the start of the song”).  Another great animatic that really gets the dream smp on a visceral level.

Description: Probably one of the best dream SMP-based Technoblade tribute animatics. I have no doubt this is how Technoblade saw his character. The animatic imagines Technoblade’s story as a series of betrayals (with subsequent epic revenging.) It really captures his lone cowboy / samurai vibe, as well as his evilness. I love how evil Quackity is in this, too. “Black magic preacher” indeed!!)

Description: Probably the best clingyduo animatic I’ve ever seen. In general, I love genesis frog’s animatics—their visuals are so striking and beautiful, and their song choices are always on point. I also love their design for Dream, who in this looks like a villain from a children’s book, like a boogeyman—“the beast that can’t be killed.” And the spinning compass at the end? Oof.

Description: The swing-y, upbeat counterpart to the above animatic. genesis frog took a big swing with these stylized colors, and it paid off in a big way. The uplifting final line with Tommy and Tubbo is everything.

Old Friends | Emerald duo animatic

Description: An extremely funny animatic that totally embraces the dynamic of Philza and Technoblade as an evil power duo.

Surface Pressure

Description: I actually like this version of Surface Pressure more than the original. The visuals build in such an interesting way throughout the song, not to mention it’s such a great interpretation of Tubbo’s character.

Description: WolfyTheWitch has an amazing streak of creativity and it shows in this animatic. The reversal of the original roles of the song, Technoblade as an angry vengeful god—everything about this animatic works.

Description: Also a qtiq animatic! Quackity-centered Las Nevadas animatic. Beautiful bright colors and striking visuals—the best of which is the slot machine flickering over Quackity at the end, cycling him between Schlatt, Dream, and Wilbur. The video ends before we find out who Quackity will become.

Description: (Oops, all qtiq!) Ranboo-centric. This animatic is so good it made me think that this was a non-fandom affiliated song. The two images of Ranboo stretching apart on, “Janus won’t you cure me of my indecision fever,” is the most memorable image for me.

we’ll meet again || Dream SMP Animatic? PMV?

Description: One final qtiq animatic, this time about Tommy and Wilbur. A beautiful, atmospheric, and slightly bitter towards Wilbur, which I love. I love that TommyInnit has devil horns, but they’re made of stuffing—it really cements the idea of Tommy as being stuck in childhood, or in a fantasy world—like an abandoned stuffed animal... Obviously there are meta reasons that change how this animatic reads. But in-universe of the Dream SMP, the final image is still striking—Tommy, living in the empty space left behind by Wilbur—or the memory of Tommy, living inside Wilbur, who is an empty space.

Avarice || Dream SMP Animatic

Artist: Late-August

Description: There was a time in my life when I watched this animatic every single day. I hadn’t even seen the Las Nevadas arc yet, but I just loved this animatic so much. I wrote an entire DnD one shot on this animatic. (It was not good but that’s beside the point.)

Adobe after effects are used to its greatest potential here. Amazing song choice that fits both the slinky casino vibe while also having super appropriate lyrics. Visuals are perfectly timed to the beat—and there are SO many visuals to love.

The framing of the wrench around Dream’s eye is great. The visual reference to Nighthawks is so perfect for Quackity and Sam. And the way that all of Quackity’s allies are represented by poker chips, reflecting the way he commodifies them! I love the King playing card for Technoblade—and I also like that Technoblade is wearing a blindfold in this, like he stepped straight out of the Untamed. And the Ace for Dream is perfect, and the simultaneous playing of the card game along with the scene of Technoblade entering the prison… it’s just amazing. And obviously, Tommy and Wilbur as twin Jacks, but also as potential, untapped resources… Yes!!

I'll Never Die || Dream SMP Animatic || Technoblade Animatic

Artist: Knp!!!

Description: Great animatic of Technoblade and his relationship to Philza. (Love that this animatic ends with his evil laugh.) Honestly, this is one of the animatics that first got me interested in Technoblade on the Dream SMP. The imagery here, of Technoblade trapped in this maze really struck me, as it made me realize how much Technoblade’s character in the Dream SMP resembles the Minotaur.

This is a bit of a tangent, but—Technoblade was always comparing Tommy to Theseus, a character who is at one point trapped in a labyrinth with the Minotaur, a monster with the head of a bull and the body of man. And meanwhile, Technoblade has the head of an animal, too. So when Technoblade says ‘Welcome home, Theseus,’ it’s not just about the story of Theseus’ father killing himself. It’s also because Technoblade IS the Minotaur—welcoming Tommy home to the labyrinth—the true home of both Theseus and Minotaur.

Description: Amazing animatic for Niki. The art style is beautiful and clean. The way the animatic escalates, and then immediately and sharply deescalates is so elegant. And the song choice is great. 

Your (Obedient) Servant | Dream SMP Animatic

Artist: Linktoo

Description: Extremely fun animatic of Wilbur and Quackity sniping at each other in the Las Nevadas arc. Love their expressions and the way they move in this, especially Quackity. Casting Quackity as Hamilton is inspired—when Wilbur derisively calls him an immigrant, it calls to mind both the initial conflict of who can be a L’manberg citizen and also makes Wilbur seem super racist. 10/10

"Theseus" | Dream SMP Animatic

Description: An animatic that’s somehow both funny and moving. Covers a TON of major Dream SMP events and includes almost every iconic line. And it’s a first-time animatic! Could you ask for more?

(To clarify, this list is not meant to be all inclusive—in fact it leaves out some of the most popular dream smp animations on purpose. For example, sadist (🙌🏽) is not mentioned on this list once. That’s because this list is mostly for me to keep track of some of my own personal favorite animatics which I feel I am more likely to lose track of as more time passes.)

Ok don’t get me wrong I always love how different artists will interpret mcrp characters in their own way but to me c!Dream is always going to be human in my head. Like there’s just something about how I imagine people would pause whenever he removed the mask. Because he just looks so average, so young. Yet a second ago this guy was standing tall in glowing armor caked in blood, with weapons that hum with equal parts magic and malice. And now he’s just… a man. A kid, really. And you realize that this isn’t a god. This is just some fucking asshole.
