Yikes, it’s been so long since I’ve posted. Week 8 / End of Easter Break Update

I decided to start working on the designs for one of the secondary characters so that I could let the ideas of Dorothy’s design rest for a while.

One thing I wanted for sure was to contrast this new design against Dorothy’s by making it a lot larger and taller. I started by drawing different silhouettes of robots (for the Tin Man) and other cloaked/masked designs for the Scarecrow. I started looking at the designs of the original 1980s designs of the Transformers characters for inspiration of the Tin Man, but quickly scrapped these ideas once I developed more of the Scarecrow. I was looking at the Skullkid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Batman: The Animated Series’ Scarecrow for inspiration.

I know everyone looks to Batman’s “Scarecrow” for reference, but it helped for me to find a proper standpoint for a design. Besides, I mainly looked to his redesign in the show’s fourth season (aka The New Adventures of Batman) for ideas, with his suit, hat, walking stick and creepy, elongated limbs. 

I wanted to use the ambiguous nature of a mask (like Skullkid) for my design of the Scarecrow, and I thought back to my concepts for the world in my story, where I designed a “frilled eye-shield” earlier in this unit. For consistency, I thought it would be interesting for the Scarecrow to be wearing a large eye-mask with extendable frills for intimidation.

After making the earlier basic silhouettes, I continued with designing a bunch of these ideas for a masked Scarecrow design. I wanted to give him an unhinged, crazy and psychotic personality, with lanky, contorted limbs and a hidden face. Once I pick a final design, I will write up a clear character sheet with details and character traits.

These are my three final designs for the Scarecrow, with the first two being tall, twisted characters, and the third one being a shorter, hat-wearing figure. I only drew the frill on the first design for space reasons, but the second and third designs’ masks will have extendable frills on them. I also drew a small side note for design 3 that shows the entire mask, as part of it is obscured by the hat on his head. All of these are basically enhanced versions of the larger designs on the previous page, detailing a full body image of these variants and their different looks.

I’m not quite sure just yet which one of these is my favourite, so I’ll wait and see. Tomorrow, I will most likely begin to pick my favourite and start drawing the construction sheets and turn-arounds for Dorothy and the Scarecrow.
