Like an underground coal fire that cannot be extinguished, the Book of Lamentations continues each time I stop archiving it. These were part of a challenge we set the #liverpoolindependentartschool patrons to draw 50 hands or feet in a week. Very few of us hit 50 but really the point was just to embed drawing hands or feet over time. They tend to be the things that most students fear drawing because we recognise them all the time but donāt really look at them. That means we donāt know how to draw them but can see immediately when they donāt look structurally correct. Just like the folks we teach I have exactly the same issues with them but did find (unexpectedly) that I really enjoyed trying to see them more accurately as a pathway into the flow headspace that drawing as meditation offers. I drew these in a water soluble fine liner with a water-brush pen to blend the lines outward into tonal areas. Line is an agreed abstraction but we understand what it means visually. In nature there is really no line- just the edge of distinct tones meeting each other. #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #onservationaldrawing #sketchbookpage #hands #gestures #drawingasmeditation https://www.instagram.com/p/ChM4PDFs2tq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Drawing is a way of thinking about things. Here's part of a 9 part drawing demo I've done for @love_to_draw_nil NIL-TECH. I'm practicing talking, Julia Child style, while I draw! š¤£ In these demos I'm sharing how I get my ideas and my working process using #watercolorpencils . The idea for this "Coffee Pup" drawing was inspired by the feeling of enjoying the first sip of good #coffee . More information about the art supplies seen in this video here- http://shop.nil-tech.com/?ref=DmLN4hDZ You can find the rest of this demo here https://sueclancy.com/portfolio/drawing-demos-by-clancy/ #drawingdemo #artsupplies #acreativelife #creativeprocess #drawingasmeditation #creativity #gettingideas (at Vancouver, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiNwMLTJRbs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For me, the most enjoyable and relaxing thing to draw is freestyled, fleshy, toothy masses. You can really get into a nice, meditative flow state by not thinking about what the drawing āshouldā look like. #elijorgensen #doodles #drawing #flowstate #cronenberg #drawingasmeditation

Drawing as Meditation, I
Part 1 - The Context
3/09 Ā - Iāve enrolled in a series of Drawing as Meditation classes at The Folk School. Ā Last night was the first class and Iām still feeling jazzed/bliss-ed out about it. Ā I want to use this space to regurgitate about it to keep the momentum up, but itās story time first. Ā Ā
The teacher, R., is an artist, educator, and close friend of the farm. Ā This summer, I stayed with the furry creatures at her home for a portion of her travels. Ā R. actually didnāt meet me til weeks later, and Iām sure having a stranger in her home when Cat #2 disappeared into the wilderness wasnāt particularly comforting. Ā My suspicions of āthe worstā were proven wrong, but thatās a different story. Ā Being in someoneās in home while theyāre gone is strange. Ā Itās like that interrogation room in a crime TV series with mirrors that are really windows from the other side of the wall. Ā Youāre in the room next door, observing but unseen. Ā
Handmade ceramics, art-filled walls, large windows reflecting sunlight onto white interior, a piano. Ā Amidst the copious amounts of animal hair and creative clutter were piles and shelves and cases of books. Ā Novels, artists, art history, art theory, art technique, and oodles of sketchbooks. Ā (I ought to add that paging through someoneās sketchbook is at the top of my guilty pleasure list). Ā Her shelves also included a wide variety of wellness literature: meditation, mental health practices such as CBT & DBT, and other writings on mindfullness. Ā From the first day I stepped foot in her home, I was hit by a wave of idontknowyoubutweshouldbefriends, followed Ā by an overwhelming sense that I was looking into the brain of someone that was me in 15 years. I donāt know her story, but I can tell our mental waves travel some common paths. Ā She knows things.
Letās just say a āmentor crushā was developed, so I was very curious to see what this Drawing as Meditation was all about.

I had started to use the Book of Lamentations for keeping up with my responses to our current #liverpoolindependentartschool life drawing sessions on Zoom. @paulg.art and I have the chance to draw in these sessions (but it is not always easy to draw as a host rather than a patron because we need to multi task sometimes with advising on tech things, answering queries in chat etc). Paul does much of the organising but somehow usually manages a much better drawing than I do. Some of my drawings work and some donāt. This set include three attempts at the same pose - with the first in simple construction lines being my favourite and the fourth is a quick one of Molly on a page of further Loomis method research. Our main model here is again the excellent @thequeenofheartbreak We have a different theme and response triggers each week. We have upgraded our zoom for longer drawing time and now run sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons like we used to in Rose Lane so our online response has become closer to what our artists had wanted in the real world. The drawings here are quite quick and some are a little clumsy but it has been a long time since Iāve had the chance to draw from the model so the experience is valuable for me. Drawing from the model is like a mindfulness meditation for me and I enjoy the headspace. The normal discursive worries slow right down when focusing on the task at hand. We couldnāt ask for a better model and our numbers are starting to grow with these sessions which include a half hour tea break after the drawing and then a PowerPoint of participant responses with pretty in depth supportive feedback. There is a sense that real learning and increases in confidence are evident. #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #sketchbookdaily #zoomclasses #lifedrawing #onlinelifedrawing #lifemodel #quickdrawing #lifestudy #liesureclass #mindfulness #drawingasmeditation (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBMs-Fs9MY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here are another set of the observational hand drawings I did for the recent 50 hands challenge for #liverpoolindependentartschool -Each drawing was about 3 or 4 minutes and I found the headspace of repeated short observational drawings very meditative and mood enhancing. Observational drawing is a particular thing. I draw in order to look and look in order to see and see in order to connect. It would be beautiful to catch glimpses of enlightenment by making simple drawings. For your benefit and benefit of all living beings I charge you to draw your hands or feet 50 times #observationaldrawing #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #sketchbookpage #hand #handdrawing #handdrawn #mudra #drawingasmeditation #frederickfranck #seeingtheworld (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChU02_yMcHi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A final set of life drawings from the Book of Lamentations today - again these are of Eve with the painted one being quite stiff but I liked the reflected figure in the mirror better than the main figure. I try to vary my materials a bit because I havenāt had the chance to life draw for years really so this is back to being an ongoing learning experience for me (as actually all drawing is got anyone who goes it at any stage ) #sketchbook #sketchbookdrawing #lifedrawing #lifedrawingclass #onlinelifedrawing #zoomclasses #lockdown2021 #lifemodelling #drawingasmeditation #liverpoolindependentartschool (at Minster Court) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLRp1YuB2Q3/?igshid=1r5fs6jv05hq2
