Sound changes from Old Elezen to Ishgardian

The sound changes resulting in Ishgardian are inspired by those in various Romance languages, most notably French, which Ishgardian names are based on in the game.

word-final /i/ and /e/ weaken ahambi -> ahambe egdu "west, to the west" -> egdo

simplification of palatal clusters with /t/ and /d/ elidjibus "diplomat" -> elidzibus padjal "blessed one" -> padzal indja -> inda

sj palatalizes tabosjar -> tabošar isja garda -> iša garda

loss of velar fricatives ɣanda "Emperor Xande" -> anda ahalajxta -> ahalajta

vowel realignment erogev "Spoken" -> ɛrɔgɛv tapēt -> tapet tagōn -> tagon

nasals are lost before semivowels andanjel "observer" -> andajel

semivowels disappear in the vicinity of their corresponding vowel andajel "observer" -> andael salawot "Thalaos" -> salaot

final plosives drop off, and stress moves usually to the final syllable patarɔt "judge" -> patarɔ ballag "Allagan Empire (realm)" -> balla

In general, Ishgardian has loaned many, many words from Dragonspeak, which have replaced a lot of original Allagan vocabulary. One example is, well, the word for 'dragon', <drav>, coming from an interpretation of the Dragonspeak nasal as /v/, from which derives Dravan "Dravania", which was loaned into Eorzean.

I am thinking about how Midgardsormr doesn't use his Dragonspeak name, can't find the source but I remember reading he keeps it a secret.

I think Hydaelyn gave him the name Midgardsormr.

And not just him. The Great Wyrms and early generations of dragons all have names different than typical Dragonspeak.

He gave his children names Hydaelyn suggested to him. Or the mortal peoples at the time.

He wanted to give them a clean start on the new star.

Even when Nidhogg's brood turned away from mortals, he kept the names, possibly out of respect for his father's sacrifice.

And maybe Hydaelyn was using the names of departed cultures from Etheirys.

There are real-world explanations for the name differences: Dragonspeak wasn't created until Heavensward, legacy Final Fantasy names for dragons like Bahamut and Midgardsormr popped up in-story before that. But the dragon storylines use linguistics for fun worldbuilding and characterization beats a lot anyways.

finished writing a thing with asphodel a day ago and i may post it on ao3 and share here perhaps despite my slight fear . but i'm realising i really should fully elaborate on asphodel lore at some point because i think i have a solid grasp on it now but i haven't really mentioned it here yet bc at most i've said vague things on discord like "her lore is loosely inspired from kirby and the forgotten land bc i was listening to the ost" and "i researched stuff about king arthur for this"

i mean not that it matters as much in the context of the thing i wrote yet bc it's about the fact that it lost its memories and has weird shit going on with that but still

Streaks of fire, and clouds of soot and ash filled the air. Hurled rocks, disturbed from their rest and sent from earth to sky. It was chaos, everywhere she turned. The roar of a dragon filled her ears, soon drowned out by the high-pitched screech of another. Blood splattered on the ground before her, and the ground beneath her feet shook, threatening to give way as the heaving body of a dragon crashed, and fell.

Ahki could only stand there and watch.

It was senseless. It all was.

She heard somebody’s voice call out to her, but she didn’t move. The sound of cannon fire, echoing around her and making the bridge itself quiver, as if in fear of the fighting happening atop it.

It was all in defence, she knew. They couldn’t let them take the city, couldn’t let the buildings be razed to the ground, homes set alight. But why was it like this? What had driven such a thing to happen in this place?

“Ehk morn an in.”

Ahki held her tome tightly as a dragon approached her, eyes wide, and her carbuncle at her feet. I didn’t, she thought. It wasn’t me. I never asked to be here.

She jumped back as the dragon reared its head to attack, and closed her eyes tightly as she fired off a Ruin spell. She couldn’t watch as she did exactly what the dragon had claimed. Couldn’t watch as she was forced to betray all she had been raised to believe.

She had a duty to fulfill. People relying on her, people who trusted her. She could not get caught in the past. She could only walk forward, no matter how much it hurt, or the depth of the pit in her stomach.

She heard a Temple Knight cry out and fall to the ground, struck down by a wyvern, before the very same got stabbed by a dragoon, hurtling down from their perch, a predator out for prey. She closed her eyes once more, her hair blowing behind her, and ignoring the pain in her feet, searing up her legs. She stepped over discarded rock and stone, the remains of a pillar, now nothing but rubble. A long-lost amulet, split and broken and never to be found. It would fall to the abyss in a hundred shards before the day was done.

“N ahs Alan eil in.”

But I’m not… I do not wish to be…

Ahki could only close her eyes, trying to hide the tears that threatened to fall. To look serious, determined, and unafraid of what awaited. She knew she could not fault the dragon’s words, the meaning coming to her perfectly in a way it both always had and never should have. She was walking in her enemy’s shoes. To hold her tome, and perform summonings like those of ancient Allag, in pursuit of dragons. Who was she, really?

It wasn’t what she wished. It wasn’t what she had set out to do, when she left her home on the southern continent. Yet here she stood, face to face with one who should’ve been a friend.

Like seriously? Literally no language works like this! At least not one I'm aware of, and I'd probably be aware of a language that uses "metaphoric compounds" and "coherent, yet wholly abstract picture" like that. Also, given the number of these compounds, aren't these... literally just words? Like, it might have a regular root/derivational structure, but it'd just be oligosynthetic if that's the case. Regardless, the terms "Amalj'aa", "Paglth'an", "Zanr'ak", "Zolm'ak", etc don't seem to follow the given structure, which is even weirder, and "Zanr'ak" even has a direct English translation that seems to map easily to a breaking of it into "zanr-" and "-'ak" (the ' is confirmed to be a glottal stop). I've chosen simply to analyze Amalj'aa as a Turalic language, for whenever I get around to building that language family.

The language has a future and non-future tense, not because languages can just be weird sometimes, but because "the dragons believe that the present is a culmination of everything that has occurred in the past, essentially making the two one in the same". like WTH?

I genuinely just enjoy making out that much.
