#dragon obsession?? Me??? Nooooo

Last little wip for now.

If you know me at all, you know this was inevitable. Join a new fandom = I'm making the characters dragons.

It's the law. My law. For myself.

Uhh rambling info below I guess, because I really wanna talk about them and their design choices. I honestly don't have much planned story-wise for this, I just really like the designs lmfao.

Starting with Mikey: he's the fastest, most nimble flyer of the crew. He can fold into a little ball or tuck in to be a speeding air-torpedo. His long ass tail is representative to his chains, and obviously he has to breath fire, it's a given. He's tiny, but he's not weak by any means! And damn can those wings give the best hugs.

Leon is mostly based on traditional serpents, with smooth scales and fins for quick movement underwater. His tail is thick and flat, so he's a quick swimmer, which kind of makes up for the fact he cannot fly. I gave him long horns like his bandana tails, and his snoot is based on a slider turtle.

Donnie's also serpent-like, but the inspiration was both the typical spiny softshell, and an eel. He also has smooth scales and a flat tail, but he has no fins along his back like Leon does. He's slightly bigger, and has a much stronger bite than his younger siblings. To pay homage to his softshell, Donnie's the only one without a plated underbelly.

He also builds a battleshell, but this time with wings. Man will not be limited to just land and sea.

Raph is the biggest and bulkiest. He's not the fastest flyer, and can't really go too high, but his speed is on par with Leo's swimming so he's not terribly slow. His scales are much more prominent, especially along his back and spine, and his strength is definitely unparalleled. Those jaws can break boulders, if he really wanted to... Still a gentle giant, though. Hard to see here, but his tail ends in a spiked ball :D

ANYWHO, what are they? Where's April and Splinter and the Caseys? How do they play into all of this?? What's a setting? What's plot?? Who needs lore??? All I see are pretty dragons to draw (and one, singular potential angst storyline but that's fineee).

I ship every canonical Tolkien couple - except Aerin & Brodda, Aredhel & Eöl, and Tar-Míriel & Ar-Pharazôn. Those poor ladies deserved so much better than those pathetic a-holes. And of course, no Turambar and Níniel, NOOOOO. (Honestly anyone who does somehow ship them needs some serious help.)

I also kinda think Melian could’ve done better than Thingol.

These are the “non-canonical” Tolkien pairings that I ship, since nobody asked.

Frodo x Sam (it’s literally canon, period, forget the “non-canonical” category, it’s right there, it’s real)

Frodo x Sam x Rosie (Sam being shared during that year in Bag End; also all but spelled out)

Bilbo x Thorin (obviously; even in the book, it’s subtextual, but it’s THERE)

Fingon x Maedhros (Beren/Lúthien + Frodo/Sam parallels are no joke; yes yes i know i know they’re first cousins and that should be a dealbreaker, and for a while it was for me, but technically they’re HALF-cousins, they only share one grandparent, and it’s not like they can procreate together, so it’s very different from what it would be if one of them was female)

Túrin x Beleg (also, obviously; just read their scenes and you can tell - ALSO the fact that Túrin never mentions Beleg again after Glaurung’s attack … do y’all realize that Glaurung is canonically a memory-eraser … that dragon wiped his memories of the love of his life and the reason he was triggered into romantic feelings for Níniel was because he saw a blond person lying on the ground under a flash of lightning which was also the way he saw Beleg for the last time and his heart remembered that even though his mind didn’t!!!!!!)

Mablung x Nienor (he just did so much for her and never gave up on searching for her until he then had to live with the knowledge that she was dead and he failed her … she lost all her memories of him and married her brother … the idea that they fell in love in Doriath before all this makes for a practically perfect tragic love story. Best part is he knew and loved her for her real self, whereas Turambar and Brandir both fell in love with an amnesiac shell of herself.)

Finrod x Bëor (yes, Finrod loved Amarië too …BUT look at how Bëor gave up everything to spend the rest of his life with Finrod, and how Finrod lost Bëor to mortality but then laid down his life for Bëor’s descendant; the angst is just too juicy to ignore)

Maglor x Daeron (two nasty but guilt-ridden minstrels who deserve each other, perfect)

I do not ship Merry and Pippin at all; not only are they full blooded first cousins, but since Merry is an only child and Pippin only has sisters, they very clearly fill that “brother” role in each other’s lives.

After a lot of thought, I’ve decided that queerplatonic Legolas & Gimli makes the most sense to me. They also fill the “brother” role in each other’s lives since they both have no blood siblings. I understand why many people do ship them romantically/sexually, but the thought of anything sexual between them just doesn’t feel right to me, personally. Even the thought of kisses just doesn’t seem to fit them, IMO; they’re about mutual respect and sharing quality time, rather than anything physical. To me they exemplify “heterosexual life partners” perfectly. It is important in this shipping-obsessed culture to never undermine platonic friendship.

Thoughts while reading The Trials of Apollo - “The Dark Prophecy” with my nephew-

1. I still cannot get over the name Lester for Apollo

2. Even after being humbled a bit, he is still the cockiest bastardized out there

3. I love the idea of Leo just having a good time with his girlfriend and his dragon and helping a God out and then there is Calypso and Apollo just snarking at each other the whole time

4. I love Calypso so much- just straight punches someone, breaks her hand, and almost immediately says fuck it and kicks someone and breaks her foot. I just really identify with this

5. Poor Leo- had to leave Festus again. WHEN WILL MY SON GET A BREAK, RICK?!

6. Oh poor Emmie and Josephine! If this book doesn’t end with them getting their daughter back I will be seeking financial compensation

7. I’m obsessed with Emmie and Josephine, every new thing I learn about them just adds to my love

8. Apollo and Calypso on a quest with no Leo to buffer… I’m so here for this- the sass with be *chefs kiss* impeccable

9. I really like that Apollo’s memory is iffy right now because I truly don’t know who most of these people are and him remembering doesn’t feel like a generic info dump

You get it. There's SO MUCH about the whole "oH nOOooo yOUr DrAgoN dOeSN't wAnT tO fUcK" from everyone else and Jaxom's internal struggle with "oh no, my dragon doesn't want to fuck and it must be bad because everyone else says so and also I think it's intrinsically linked to his ability to be a Real Dragon (and therefore a commentary on his/my masculinity if I don't want it for him and he doesn't want it for himself)" that really HITS

and Ruth, full enlightened sweetie that he is, is just over here like... "Why is everyone so obsessed with this? I'm actually fine with not fucking? I can breathe fire? I can fight thread? I'm obviously a Real Dragon?"

And it just felt so... idk, validating? that Jaxom eventually comes around to "If Ruth is fine and I'm fine and Ruth is fine with me wanting to have sex and I'm fine with him not wanting to have sex and we're BOTH fine with his degree of participation when I DO have sex... everything is actually fine. It's good actually."

Idk man, I don't know what McCaffrey was intending when she made this such an important part of Jaxom's character development in the story, but for one of my favorite childhood dragon-books to end up being so ace-positive just feels really good.

Re-reading The Dragonriders of Pern books from the beginning and The White Dragon hits different as an adult who now understands their own asexuality

So, in the year of our, right the heck now, 2020, I had never seen Avatar.  The highest grossing movie of all time for nearly, a decade, and I’d just avoided it. I’d never had an excuse to watch it, so I never did.

(Also, amazingly, whenever I brought up the other Avatar, the last airbender one, my mother would think I was talking about this one every single time, and I’d have to be like, nooooo, Mom, my friends and I aren’t going to be talking about that nearly as obsessively.)

Hearing this, a friend decided to show me the movie a few days ago. I watched the first half, because the friend only liked the first half, and I was told by my brother today that it gets much worse from there. So here are my thoughts on the movie right now, and I’ll update after I finish it. As a note, I didn’t go in entirely spoiler free, and I know about the Dances with Smurfs analogy. So, I came in thinking I knew mostly what to expect.

·         First off, why is everyone in this story such a moron? Sure, I can understand giving the meatheaded marine the opportunity to join so they don’t waste his brother’s avatar body, but they don’t handle this well. The scientists find out he doesn’t have any training, and they immediately put him into the avatar body anyway. Why not give him training? There is no reason not to, but this is never brought up other than when the scientist is like why the hell is he here?

·         The moment he gets an avatar body, he starts running around when everyone is telling him to sit down so they can check on him. He escapes and runs around the whole camp. There are no consequences for this.

·         Head  scientist Sigourney Weaver  keeps giving him shit for literally just being there. He just got hired. This is not his fault. They really should have given him more training before letting him out in the field. Though this could be just her character being kind of a jerk.

·         Unobtainium is still the silliest goddamn name.

·         Main character hears the natives referred to as savages and doesn’t immediately feel disturbed. This might be more of something that bothers me than anyone else, but it’s kinda amazing this character gets as far as he does at that point. You could probably argue that the later parts of the story indicate character growth, but I just didn’t start out anywhere near of the side of this character.

·         They do everyone else right, but head scientist Sigourney Weaver’s avatar looks far, far, too much like Sigourney Weaver. It’s something in her eyes, but when I look at her, it immediately hits the uncanny valley for me. It got so much other stuff right, just not her face.

·        As a result of “let’s not give him training before sending him out, ” he gets chased by a creature he knows nothing about and falls off a waterfall, right into the plot.

·         This movie must have inspired so, sooo much porn. I know it. Like wow. Just look at the designs of the Na’vi and the avatars for two minutes, and tell me you don’t see it.

·         The creature design really is fantastic, and the visual effects were applauded for a reason. I love the creativity, and the Eywa (little wisp things) are just gorgeous. Them and the bird/dragon mounts are probably my favorite.

·         One of the stated reasons, (another being the Eywa saying this random ass dude is a pure soul), that the Na’vi willing to let in a warrior into the tribe, is because he’s a warrior rather than a scientist? That’s a bit...weak. You’d think they’d be more okay with someone who doesn’t go around murdering, especially considering their culture and how sad Neytiri is when some predators die and main character doesn’t honor them properly.  There’s apparently some extended scenes that involve shootouts and Neytiri’s unmentioned sister, and I think that makes it make them accepting a warrior make even less sense, but I don’t know all of the details, and I can’t fully make that argument in sound mind.

·         I kinda want to throw the main character off a bridge during half of this. Maybe because there’s so much glorifying his inherent militaristic attitude? They’re not willing to accept scientists, but they’ll accept this guy. Who is kind of a dope.

·         The connecting tendrils on the Na’vi are in a pretty vulnerable spot. I’m surprised there isn’t more protection around their hair.

·         I didn’t hate the first half. I did have some inherent issues with some of the plot choices. It is a very pretty movie, and I appreciate the imagination behind the designs of the planet and the creatures. I’m sure there are arguments to be made for most of my issues with the movie as well, and I have only watched the first half, so my thoughts might change by the time I’m through.

I'm trying not to go all Netherese orb mode with excitement right now cause I have been on the dragon prince train since about the same time (... Side note... Can you call a thing a hyperfixation if it lasts over half a decade? 🤔)

Also make no mistake the reason I "hate" Viren is because of what a tragic character and excellent antagonist he is and that like "nooooo don't play into your own self destruction and destruction of those you love!" feeling. I have always been fascinated with him as a character (though the crux of my obsession in the show to start with was Aaravos and all the questions and theories concocted around him)

I have GOT to pay more attention to the credits art whenever I'm watching The Dragon Prince I have it in the background as a comfort so I keep forgetting to push the "watch credits" button.

The scales-blindfold-sword thing is so frickin good and also something we can see recreated in the next generation with Callum-Ezran-Rayla (Callum and Viren parallels my beloved) and I think there's something to be said for the necessity of removing the blindfold. This is something Ezran has come into conflict with a couple times now in his role as king. He wants to move forward with everyone on equal footing, but the reality is that they're not on equal footing just yet. Everyone is still uniquely affected by centuries of trauma, and in trying to just treat everybody the same you don't grant them the nuanced care that they need to actually move past it. I'm not so sure it's subverting his role as fair so much as acknowledging that we cannot pretend that all things are equal, that Harrow had maybe engaged in some willful blindness with regards to the dirtier methods needed to keep things running, and by the end he faced those methods head on and took a stand.

Also LOVE the "build the orphanage" mention totally my view as well. It does get a lot tricky when it's not building an orphanage though but solving a trolley problem. Intentions matter because there's gonna be pain no matter what you do and you gotta defend your decision and selfish motivations are definitely going to affect the ethos of such an argument.

AND THE USEFULNESS YES YES YES they both want to be useful and needed so bad and I love it (totally not cause I relate to it at all psh no couldn't be me) and depending on who's influencing them they're either going to run themselves into the ground trying to be everything (Aaravos whispering in Viren's ear) or finally reach some peace with just being human (player and Gale in the professor ending). Though I'd still argue that the both of them aren't fully honest about their more selfish motivations in general, not in the sense of trying to fool anyone, but more in the sense of they don't recognize it themselves. They've built up this story of who they are in part because of that desire to be useful. When we meet Gale in game he's a little bit more inclined to admit his darker side (just slightly) because he's just been through a year of hell then stopped off in actual hell during the abduction. Viren has a similar improvement in his self examination after going through, for lack of a better term, Some Shit.

I'm honestly just so honored you responded to my little rambly tags I hope they didn't come off as criticism/argument I was very eagerly engaging with the premise you presented.

Coming into BG3 BladeWeave (Wyll x Gale) from TDP Virrow (Viren x Harrow) is kind of a weird experience. Admittedly, the big part of the initial draw for me was the matching aesthetics between them, and, obviously, they are not the same characters. But in terms of narrative draws they do have lots of common themes that it feels more like a conversation.

Wyll, raised by a leader to be a leader, ends up accepting demonic warlock pact with Mizora to protect Baldur’s Gate. And is banished by his own father because the pact forbids him to share his reasons. This does mesh with themes of dark magic in TDP and how it’s distasteful, but instrumental in keeping Katolis safe – and how if Harrow didn’t have Viren to do the dirty work for him, he may have had to make these choices all on his own, ending up with debts and scars and stigma of it all.

Meanwhile, if human dark magic was not stigmatized, it’s easy to see Viren in the role of Gale – a successful and ambitious archmage. This background almost seems lighthearted in comparison, with Gale not really being involved in politics. But not having all the same challenges doesn’t free Gale from hardship – his ambition has to go somewhere. Both of the characters’ cores are ultimately about their drive in serving others and challenging the forbidden. And both of them have to deal with divorce/breakup, and the weight of positive utility of their death for the people they care about.

Bladeweave in relation to Virrow feels like a fix-it power balancer ship – they both fuck things up, and have their insecurities, but they can make each other better.

And it is a little funny to me that I keep chatting to my TDP friends about bladeweave with all the joyful excitement – “Just imagine, ‘Harrow’ has horns!” “’Viren’ has a magical cancer bomb in his chest, what fun!”. But I do struggle to go full propaganda the other way.

TDP is ultimately a kids show, and some of the narrative decisions are v much not my jam. Half of my favorite ship (Virrow) has been dead (or as good as dead) since s1e3, but it still lives rent free in my mind. I guess it is just the near shakespearian tragedy of them. Which I suppose does highlight the biggest potential draw for any BladeWeave appreciators: they have SO much history together.

Basically, imagine that Wyll and Gale grew up together. Imagine that Gale has served as a mage to Wyll’s family. They both want to do the best for the Baldur’s Gate, but that often means accepting dangerous ‘demonic pacts’. Gale has been taking the burnt of those onto himself, ruining his personal relationships for the sake of the greater good. And as much as Wyll is accepting of that, he is also at least a little disgusted at the cost, and at himself for letting it happen. And both of them are not very good at letting things go.

Virrow is a trainwreck that keeps going, and I just can’t turn away.

And the last one I was just having fun in a trampoline and I fell through its entrance unto the patio which was made of cement tiles and my right wrist took all the damage and it still hurts sometimes when it's cold or if I use it too much.

Favorite Character: Hannibal.  He’s got such an idiosyncratic world view, he’s so controlled but so vulnerable and lonely at the same time.  Such a great character.

Favorite moment of the entire franchise: In the stables when Hannibal cradles Will’s neck and whispers sweet nothings about caterpillars.  Also when they are eating fake Freddie for dinner and making heart eyes at each other. Also the ortolans.  Also when they meet again in the Uffizi Gallery like old lovers.  Also the montage where Hannibal is preparing for the dinner party in Fromage with the rolodex and the organs and such.  I could keep going, really, there are so many favorite moments.

What brought you into the fandom; books, movies, or T.V. series: There were threads on Metafilter back when season 2 was going on and I was like “hmm, maybe this is actually a good show?” And so I started watching it from the beginning right when season 3 started and caught up furiously and basically binged forever and over and over that summer and have been lost to this fandom ever since.

Least Favorite scene from the entire franchise: When Mason takes Margot’s uterus etc.  It’s the worst.  So much evil and suffering.

Add Clarice to NBC’s Hannibal, yes or no: Maybe, but I don’t want Hannibal to love anyone but Will.  Any interest he would have in Clarice would be but a pale shadow of his obsession with Will.

yep, also marryng each other to keep the line pure?? and the whole annulment thing was so fucked up, poor Elia. Idk if it will be a thing in the books, it doesnt make sense, he couldve married both. Prophecies are always a bad thing and Raeghar was obsessed and Elia, her kids and Lyanna and her family paid for it. Aemon joined the NW because he didn't want to be king.

But to be fair, the european royalty family tree looks a LOT like that. It’s really creepy. I wish I could remember which country I was looking at, but it was just like that. Sisters cousins grand nieces. Consolidating power and blood and connections and purity and ending up creating rulers who had all these genetic recessive traits that began to dominate and became TRENDY for the courts to copy. 

TBH I don’t remember a whole lot of the Rhaegar and Elia story. I mean it was all in the past and they’re all dead. I mean we had the fake Aegon with the blue hair, right? But he never appeared in the show which means he was a red herring. But the books didn’t get to what happened to him, right? Or did I just forget. I feel like that was left hanging. 

You know this whole title? The Game of Thrones? It’s so much better to NOT play it, like Aemon. Elia played it and paid with her life. And that of her children. She married the heir to the throne. 

People want Sansa to be Queen of the North, and I’m like NOOOOO. She will lose the game if she tries to be Queen. Let Sansa be WARDEN in the North. No Queen. No throne. I’m just holding this for the throne, with all the powers but no stupid game to play. No thanks. Like Aemon, take herself out of the running and maybe she can have a life and be happy in her little (huge) corner of the world. 

Oh you know, I think Jon and Dany will co-rule. There’s an idea I like, where people come together (if they’re downtrodden, even better) to fight against an unstoppable enemy and win. To act as checks and balances on each other. To speak for the people. If Jon and Dany pair up, as Targaryens, and the Starks stick together with him, Jon brings a wolf pack to the Dragons. And if the Hand, Tyrion is actually also part Targ, and we can get Jaime back on his side, then we get Tyrion standing with them bringing his pride of lions, That means each individual group that couldn’t win against the white walkers (or bring peace to the kingdoms) can work TOGETHER to accomplish what they couldn’t alone. 

Leave me alone. That’s the kind of story I like. And it’s the kind of story that makes all that chaos and suffering worthwhile in the end.

So I spent the bulk of my Sunday catching up on Persona 5 and a couple of tv shows.

I’ve been watching The Librarians Season 4 for one or two eps a day since last week, only got to finish the rest of the season yesterday.

Here goes my random thoughts and commentaries in mixed vernacular. 

Persona 5: Finally the last member has joined my ragtime band of thieves, Goro Akechi. The detective with the ancient name. He looks like a prince but cunning like a fox. I have mixed feelings with this guy... I don’t like him but I can’t hate him either haha. Makatawa lng ko sa iyang reason on why he’s obsessed with justice. Dili daw kay for justice’s sake, or for the society churva. Self-gratification diay iyang peg, for personal reasons. Lolz. My current mission is to infiltrate Detective Sae’s palace which is a casino to changer her cognition about arresting the Phantom Thieves. (That explains the events in the beginning of the game) I feel like I’m 3/4′s already in the game, so I hafta strengthen my party and personas. I spent like two hours wandering Mementos, layo kaau ang next rest area mao nadugay ko. 

Dragons: Riders of Berk: Srsly... where was this show all my life??? It’s one of the best animated series I’ve seen, next to Avatar:TLA and Voltron Legendary Defender. I’m so glad I decided to try this show. Still halfway on season 1 tho... can’t wait to watch the next eps!!!

The Librarians and the Silver Screen: This gotta be my fave ep of this season, rather, the first ep that gave me an “Aha!” moment in season 4. I just love the concept of being stuck in a movie and you gotta play the characters in that movie to get out alive. I can’t remember being amused so much in a Librarian’s episode, I was chuckling all the time. I love the witty banter, the cinematography mimicking the old movies. Jake Stone is at his highest element... singing a country song in cowboy attire at a bonfire on a moonlit night. Perfection!

The Librarians and the Bleeding Crown: I like Darrington Dare. I wish he has his own Librarians spinoff minisode. Flynn looks so cute fanboying over his fave Librarian. Pero walay challenge ang nemesis, sa tinuod lng nagkatawa ko sa ilang away, more comedy than the ultimate battle between good and evil lolz. However, the seeds of doubt has been sown... that there can only be one Librarian. NOOOOO.

The Librarians and the Grave of Time: This ep was all over the place, there’s so much happening and it’s poorly executed. This was an important ep, since it shows that Nicole MIGHT not be a bad person, that despite her immortality, she still has her humanity intact. However everything just feels too rushed.

The Librarians and the Disenchanted Forest: The first half of this ep was good. But went corny by the end. I’ve always wanted to go on a summer camp like what they do in America (we do it differently in my country), it just looks so fun in the movies and books y’know! The romance is also half baked. But I still get kilig sa da moves ni Jake. What a dreamy guy. *le sigh* Pero bitaw, korneh man tong the first tree/zero seed churva oie haha. 

The Librarians and the Hidden Sanctuary: Cassandra goes on hiatus after having a traumatic experience in one of the gangs mission. Like the previous ep, the first half was okay. Pero laughable jud ang fairy villain, I thought naa pay mas mu-maot sa BRATZ, ikaw na te. But the moral of the story is, quoting another reviewer, “Life without risks or without a sense of danger is no life at all.”  

The Librarians and A Town called Feud: Arguments are a common sight in this show. Each character has his/her own strengths and weaknesses, and when you put them together in a group, dili jud malikayan ang competition, esp. when all of them are experts and geniuses in their own right. Natural na mag.away, naay competition, but when it comes down to it, you hafta understand that you are ONE of the group. Jake and Ezekiel looked so cool being all manly, pointing guns at each other tho, nakulbaan ghapon ko kadjut haha. But I never expected a supernatural element in this show... ghosts anyone?

The Librarians and Some Dude Named Jeff: What a fun episode! Like a love-letter to the fandom, not just to the TL fandom, but to geeks/nerds like myself. What must it feel like to meet your fave character in real-life, and get to have an adventure with them, even just once? Dream come true! Anyways, I love Jenkins, and his actor John Larouquette. He can absolutely do a one-man Librarian este Custodian show. The booby traps are kinda absurd esp. that DDR trap haha, but still, it’s Jenkin’s dancin everyone!!! 

The Librarians and the Trial of One: This ep literally had me SHOOKETH. I miss Jenkins. I miss the Librarians. I hate the Library. I hate Nicole. BUT WELL DONE, SHOW!

The Librarians and the Echoes of Memory: I didn’t like how it ended... like they were too kind on Nicole after all she has done. But I guess that’s the lesson. FORGIVENESS. And second chances. I guess there won’t be another season soon? Arghh I’m drained. I bingewatched the last 4 eps in one sitting y’know!
