Lots of posts about who Felassan is in the Masked Empire out there these days. All factual. All important. All leaving out his most defining trait.

Felassan is a fucking weirdo. He's so over everything. He says the most insane shit. When asked about it he pulls "idk, I'm Dalish?" out of his ass and doesn't even have the decency to make it sound true.

He eats bark, kids. All you Solavellan girlies out there need to know a couple of centuries of putting up with your man's bullshit leaves you chewing random pieces of bark and teaching stray lesbians to murder like it's a social experiment.

So I've talked about this on Tiktok but I'm gonna talk about it here too. I think part of the reason Felassan was glad Briala turned on Celene at the end of Masked Empire is because she escaped what Solas could not.

I think there are MANY parallels to Briala/Celene and Solas/Mythal. Celene and Mythal are these elevated beings that arguably hold great power over their partners. And they go about their relationships in ways we're it's very much "Here dog. Go fetch" where Solas/Briala are in a more servantile position. (There's also just the fact Felassan tries to raise Briala up as a modern day Fen'harel almost, which boosts the parallels going on)

And initially. Yes, maybe Briala and Solas have their issues with how the women in their lives go about things. But ultimately, they are convinced how they act is for the better. That eventually things will turn out the way they're supposed to under their watch. All Solas and Briala have to do is keep serving them. Keep believing in them. And as an effect, keep loving them.

And what comes from this is an incredibly unhealthy dynamic for both couples. Celene and Mythal don't care about the plight of the elves. Mythal had slaves, she elevated herself to godhood (prior to her murder). Celene burned down the Halamshiral alienage, she got Briala captured, she had her parents murdered etc. They. Don't. Care. Not when it especially threatens their power, as shown when Celene freaks as the Elves threaten to rise up against Celene, and Mythal gets mad when Solas rebelled.

But then Briala and Solas diverge. Because where Solas initially still believes Mythal can do no wrong, and where Solas desperately believes Mythal WILL join him eventually...Briala sees through the facade of Celene.

The only reason Celene vows to help the elves is to keep Briala loyal to her. It doesn't come from a genuine love or care for her elven subjects. In the same way I think Mythal gave just enough for Solas to cling to that he didn't pull away from her entirely when, at least I THINK, Mythal never sided with his rebellion.

And we know that when Mythal died. Solas was inconsolable. He pulled away from Felassan entirely. He essentially shut down from grief and it led to the ancient world being destroyed because Solas stopped talking to those he cared about to try and find another way.

And for Briala to not take that route. To not fall for Celene's sweet nothings. To choose her love for her people over her love for Celene and LISTEN to Felassan must've been such a relief. And probably contributed to Felassan's decision to betray Solas.

"They're stronger than you think you know," and he was right. Briala was stronger than Solas in the end.

Do you ever think about "The Masked Empire" after DATV? About Briala who tried to help elves and make their life better even if orlesian nobility wouldn't allow it in any circumstances? Briala who loved Celene and tried so hard to believe and protect the empress even if Celene kept lying, break promises and never chose Briala over the power.

About Felassan who said Briala reminds him of the Dreadwolf.

About Inquisitor who was the only person who changed everything because helped Celene and Briala to make peace and move forward.

No? Me too.

Solas's laid back, almost cheery nature at the Winter Palace becomes so much more ominous if you think about how he mightve retaken the eluvians that night. And that's why he's silently celebrating with a drink by himself.

Worse if that same night. Briala ascends as the real power behind the throne. She believes she is really about to change things for the elves, she's high on the success of her ploys and her efforts. Not realising in the background, there was a wolf in the Palace that's just taken the one thing that levelled an elf to the playing fields of royalty.

Can you imagine returning that night as Briala. And either your agents are SCRAMBLING because they can't get through the Eluvians. Agents are trapped on the other sides...everything is in chaos and Briala doesn't know what the fuck happened.

Or, she returns. And finds her agents standing silently as an elven man appears before her. Wanting to speak about returning the elves to their former glory...

And Felassan's words are ringing in her ears.

Briala feeling bad for Celene after she had literally slaughtered the elves makes me so mad. She feels guilty rather than angry at Celene because she wasn’t there to guide her to make the right choice. Makes me feel awful for reuniting them in the winter palace.
