I see the captain of the Demeter and her crew are becoming aware of their dark passenger. God help them.

Made the mistake of going on Twitter and saw this RANCID take on the “Last Voyage of the Demeter” movie. At least the replies are on point. This is very funny.

the last voyage of the demeter is to dracula what rogue one is to star wars because you know that everyone is fucked before you even start watching but you still end up getting attached

I think Dracula’s destruction of the crew of the Demeter is for more reason than just him wanting a snack. I think, for whatever reason, he wants to arrive in England with no witnesses. He’s in one of the boxes; his weight would be noticed when they were unloaded. It would be difficult to be sure of conveniently getting off the boat separate from the boxes, both because he can’t leave it as a man (there was no passenger) and because he can’t cross running water. The death of the crew lets him crash the boat directly into the shore, so it is in physical contact with land, and then depart it as a wolf.
He’s not miscalculating. He’s causing the mist on purpose. He’s getting rid of the crew on purpose. He’s crashing the ship on purpose.

Imagine if The Last Voyage of the Demeter just ends with a twenty minute sequence of Dracula trying to singlehandedly steer the ship into Whitby without crashing.

listen dracula is my favourite gothic novel for many MANY reasons, but the winner has to be the literal ghost ship with a desperate dead man tied to the wheel in eternal prayer

The captain of the Demeter is starting to feel what Jonathan felt when locked in extreme isolation with Dracula. There is no escape; the only way out is through, and it may come at the cost of their lives. In fact, it already has.

The Captain of the Demeter remains one of my favorite parts of Dracula and strikes tears in my eyes every time. He dies a holy death doing his duty, however futilely, against an unknown and terrifying evil, and thereby "saves his soul and his honour as a captain."

Okay, but hear me out. It's a Deep Space Nine episode, first or second season; a scheduled freighter warps into the Bajoran System, but it's moving erratically; Sisko sends out some runabouts to catch it and tow it in, but when they do, they find that everyone is dead, exsanguinated, except for a single feral black dog, who runs out the airlock and disappears on the Promenade. Amongst its cargo are 12 crates of Earth soil, registry unknown. Odo investigates the murders and determines, with some understandable excitement, that they could only possibly have been committed by a fellow shape-shifter. Meanwhile, a dark, sinister stranger turns up at Quark's, looking for discrete passage to Bajor; Earth has become too civilized for him to easily ply his trade and he's hoping that he might more easily find...opportunities...on a war-torn planet...
