This is leaving Netflix, so I'm going to do a sorta watchalong thing before it goes, where I just post my thoughts on each episode as I watch 'em. I've never seen it before and I haven't really picked anything up from fandom osmosis except that there's big gay ship drama and people don't like the ending. I also don't know anything about the original Voltron or the Japanese stuff, so no opinion on it as an adaptation (although you'd think a modern adaptation would throw in a lot more girls, but I guess this is from the Before Times and they could just not do that).

1x01: Rise of Voltron.

-Kay, so Lance is Sokka but as the kinda-sorta lead? The big difference seems to be that Sokka was actually the smart one, but Lance is an idiot, which... yeah, is a difference, but seems to make the character flatter.

-Hunk and Pidge are both fine. I guess the subverted expectation thing is that Pidge isn't a scaredy-cat, but Hunk is, which seems so contrary to being the Big Guy that it's hard to get behind it?

-Does this make sense to anyone else? Keith and Shiro both have Sixth Ranger Energy to me and they kinda blend together with a lack of personality? I guess Keith is the angsty bad boy (flunked out of space explorer school) and Shiro is the leader guy, even though he's also the amnesiac untrustworthy guy with the mysterious backstory (he's Bucky and Captain America, basically, just like should've happened in the MCU). I don't know, the dynamic is just weird to me. It's like if Angel showed up in the first season of Buffy and went "I'm a friend... but I never said I was YOURS😈😈😈" and then he started leading the Scooby Gang and giving inspirational speeches?

-Not to Surf Dracula things, but it might've made for a better story if it took longer than three joined-together episodes to find ALL the Lions and we met them later on. Sorry, gut feeling.

-The bad guys are furries?

-I would've thought Alura (?) would be one of the pilots. I know Koran can't be because he's an adult, even though he'd seem ideally suited to pilot a Lion, since he's in the military or something and it's his technology and he's old enough to have a 401(k), but even in Anime Land (America), that just means he's old and washed-up, six steps away from the grave.

-Koran's grandfather was alive 600 years ago, but he and Alura are shocked that the Big Bad (I forget his name) is 10,000+ years old. I guess it makes sense, but still, I find it a little funny that there's a distinction between being Kinda Immortal and Super Immortal.

rewatched 1x02 of the vampire show

continuing my theory about there being a background line that establishes the episode thesis relatively early on: there isn't a line that stands out to me, so maybe that was a dumb idea! but i think the boring, awkward little anecdote the salesman tells is interesting; the broken-down horse, the shiny new tractor; the shining golden frontier palomino, the creep of capital-intensive farming that turned the prairie into a dust bowl. i'm not insisting that the show writers were like 'and then everyone will vaguely recall that one chapter about tractors from the grapes of wrath, which they read in the ninth grade,' i'm just saying that's what i thought about: this guy's daughter & his job & his weak sales pitch, replacing something beautiful & fragile with something powerful & new & unalive

i like when they're coming back from the cemetery & louis is wearing lestat's caped greatcoat. when we first see lestat from behind in 1x01, he's standing under a streetlight in his old-fashioned overcoat, serving dracula; now louis is transformed, & he's wearing it. nice detail

lestat has a much more compelling sales pitch. 'you alone beneath the rising moon can strike like the hand of god' okay man you can just say you want him to top. well, i guess he kind of did. but it is an articulation of what vampirism is to lestat, & i think it's interesting! lestat is saying, 'death is beautiful, our purpose is to witness it,' and louis is like 'that is murder you are insane,' because that is not his particular brand of unhinged protagonism. anyway thinking about the idea of beauty for beauty's sake, nina auerbach's observation that the referent for dracula was oscar wilde in the dock

i love watching louis eat the lawyer. i mean murder is wrong. i love watching louis eat the lawyer. i love his cream suit. i love his angry little hiss. i love jacob anderson's shoulders. i love how he says "subject verb agreement sir." i love watching louis eat the lawyer

i remain a little skeptical of louis' narration, perhaps unjustly. in 1x01 he says 'i was being hunted, and i had absolutely no idea,' but he must've had some idea that lestat pursued him? if lestat was following him around all the time & staring at him like that & having wild powers & so on? is there not some model here where louis liked being the object of lestat's desire, even though he clearly did not want or consent to all parts of that desire? i don't think this diminishes the harm lestat did to louis, obviously, & it makes me sad to imagine that louis might

cf. louis & the theater: in 1x01, he tells his family he fell asleep, but lestat says otherwise; in 1x02, lestat invites him to the opera, he rolls his eyes, and then looks enraptured once he's there. 'he had a way about him,' but louis is just faking it with the tenor; okay, but i don't believe you, louis! you are staring intently at the tenor with a look of wonder on your face! i think he saw the appeal & rejected it, which is more interesting anyway but is worse if you believe in Thought Crimes (are catholic)

off-topic but i read part of a fic where louis is reading paradise lost, which the author seemed to believe is a catholic text? which is sufficiently incorrect to be comical. but please consider how much fun one could have with st. augustine's confessions: not only does it have that very famous part about stealing for the sake of stealing, which i think is very much how louis thinks of lestat, it is also sort of an origin point for western memoir. does louis imagine his interview as a sort of confession? he has to, right? at what point do we think daniel figures out that louis has called him here to shrive his soul lmao

Sneak Peek of Chapter Two of “Caught in a Riptide”

How the little girl had managed to sneak past the guards undetected he wasn’t quite sure. But the vampire had to admit he was rather impressed. Zoe walked confidently over to his prison, looking it over with such curiosity. His lips curved into a friendly, and yet also edging on menacing grin. 

“Hello,” she stated cheerfully.

“Why hello yourself,” he responded, eyes scanning the room in search of guards. Somehow they were alone. “What, might I ask, are you doing here?” 

“My baby-sitter couldn’t watch me, so my Aunt Aggie brought me here.” She shrugged. 

“Oh.” Now things were getting interesting. “So you’re Agatha Van Helsing’s niece?” 

“Yep.” Zoe nodded her head vigorously, smiling brightly. “What’s your name?”

“Dracula.” 

The little girl gasped and the vampire couldn’t help but grin wider. “Like the vampire?” She whispered, watching him with wide eyes.  “Exactly!” 

She seemed to consider this new information for a moment. Then, folding her arms over her chest, Zoe furrowed her brow in an expression of comical seriousness. “Show me your fangs.”

It was his turn to be taken aback. After centuries of existence, the mere aspect of a vampire struck fear in the hearts of many. Now here stood a little girl, void of such fright, demanding to see his razor sharp teeth. So, without a reason not to do so otherwise, Dracula allowed his fangs to pop out. The girl gaped at them mesmerized. 

“Cool!” She exclaimed. “Oh, and my name is Zoe by the way.” 

Dracula eyed her with a cocked brow. “That’s a harlot’s name.”

Zoe tilted her head in confusion. “What’s a harlot?” 

He smirked as the sound of panicked footsteps drew closer and closer to the room. “Ask your aunt.” The Count chuckled as an out of breath Agatha sprinted through the sliding doors. “Pleasure speaking with you, Miss Zoe.”
