This is leaving Netflix, so I'm going to do a sorta watchalong thing before it goes, where I just post my thoughts on each episode as I watch 'em. I've never seen it before and I haven't really picked anything up from fandom osmosis except that there's big gay ship drama and people don't like the ending. I also don't know anything about the original Voltron or the Japanese stuff, so no opinion on it as an adaptation (although you'd think a modern adaptation would throw in a lot more girls, but I guess this is from the Before Times and they could just not do that).

1x01: Rise of Voltron.

-Kay, so Lance is Sokka but as the kinda-sorta lead? The big difference seems to be that Sokka was actually the smart one, but Lance is an idiot, which... yeah, is a difference, but seems to make the character flatter.

-Hunk and Pidge are both fine. I guess the subverted expectation thing is that Pidge isn't a scaredy-cat, but Hunk is, which seems so contrary to being the Big Guy that it's hard to get behind it?

-Does this make sense to anyone else? Keith and Shiro both have Sixth Ranger Energy to me and they kinda blend together with a lack of personality? I guess Keith is the angsty bad boy (flunked out of space explorer school) and Shiro is the leader guy, even though he's also the amnesiac untrustworthy guy with the mysterious backstory (he's Bucky and Captain America, basically, just like should've happened in the MCU). I don't know, the dynamic is just weird to me. It's like if Angel showed up in the first season of Buffy and went "I'm a friend... but I never said I was YOURS😈😈😈" and then he started leading the Scooby Gang and giving inspirational speeches?

-Not to Surf Dracula things, but it might've made for a better story if it took longer than three joined-together episodes to find ALL the Lions and we met them later on. Sorry, gut feeling.

-The bad guys are furries?

-I would've thought Alura (?) would be one of the pilots. I know Koran can't be because he's an adult, even though he'd seem ideally suited to pilot a Lion, since he's in the military or something and it's his technology and he's old enough to have a 401(k), but even in Anime Land (America), that just means he's old and washed-up, six steps away from the grave.

-Koran's grandfather was alive 600 years ago, but he and Alura are shocked that the Big Bad (I forget his name) is 10,000+ years old. I guess it makes sense, but still, I find it a little funny that there's a distinction between being Kinda Immortal and Super Immortal.

Sneak Peek of Chapter Two of “Caught in a Riptide”

How the little girl had managed to sneak past the guards undetected he wasn’t quite sure. But the vampire had to admit he was rather impressed. Zoe walked confidently over to his prison, looking it over with such curiosity. His lips curved into a friendly, and yet also edging on menacing grin. 

“Hello,” she stated cheerfully.

“Why hello yourself,” he responded, eyes scanning the room in search of guards. Somehow they were alone. “What, might I ask, are you doing here?” 

“My baby-sitter couldn’t watch me, so my Aunt Aggie brought me here.” She shrugged. 

“Oh.” Now things were getting interesting. “So you’re Agatha Van Helsing’s niece?” 

“Yep.” Zoe nodded her head vigorously, smiling brightly. “What’s your name?”

“Dracula.” 

The little girl gasped and the vampire couldn’t help but grin wider. “Like the vampire?” She whispered, watching him with wide eyes.  “Exactly!” 

She seemed to consider this new information for a moment. Then, folding her arms over her chest, Zoe furrowed her brow in an expression of comical seriousness. “Show me your fangs.”

It was his turn to be taken aback. After centuries of existence, the mere aspect of a vampire struck fear in the hearts of many. Now here stood a little girl, void of such fright, demanding to see his razor sharp teeth. So, without a reason not to do so otherwise, Dracula allowed his fangs to pop out. The girl gaped at them mesmerized. 

“Cool!” She exclaimed. “Oh, and my name is Zoe by the way.” 

Dracula eyed her with a cocked brow. “That’s a harlot’s name.”

Zoe tilted her head in confusion. “What’s a harlot?” 

He smirked as the sound of panicked footsteps drew closer and closer to the room. “Ask your aunt.” The Count chuckled as an out of breath Agatha sprinted through the sliding doors. “Pleasure speaking with you, Miss Zoe.”

so I finished the first ep of moftiss dracula.

either I’ve gotten used to the weird tone or it’s actually changed a little.

there are definitely some things I don't like. all the screaming for example... not just the women luckily but seriously who screams that long and that loudly?? and some things just made me roll my eyes cause they’re either so standard or just predictable... and at some points, it feels like they’re trying a little too hard to be clever but some things are so intriguing that I want to know how it goes on and ends.

for example all the questions Agatha asks when she tries to make sense of the vampire lore and when she wonders why things are the way they are. I really hope she finds out and hope the show delivers on it in a satisfactory way.

something I like (and am glad about) is that they use practical effects (mostly in the form of prosthetics). some things are clearly digital but with others, I can’t quite tell. mostly probably because they’re so seamlessly cut together.

but some prosthetics are just... idk... I mean I guess they look good but because I know it's not quite realistically possible, it seems really fake to me. it looks horrible but I also can't quite take it seriously

I really like the fangs tbh. a little crooked and yellowed and very realistic looking.

also claes bang’s voice is really nice. and he looks good covered in blood (but those shots of his butt when he was at the gate of the convent were a bit unnecessary imo)
