Let’s look at Kara’s truest perfect partner in terms of major rescues and mutual life-saving, amongst other things...

James, bless him he would’ve had Kara’s back as best he could, but never could’ve legit saved her life in a big pinch, unless perhaps when she had no powers, at most. The rest of the time he would’ve been a man-damsel always desperate to keep up and contribute to the heroics, but struggling to do so at her level. And then there’s Mon-El, who despite his bravado, muscle pads and alien strength, was usually also a man-damsel, as he failed so often to ever back her up in a way that really helped anything, and that was even after being molded and forced to learn how to be someone she could remotely rely on in the first place. And the only time he ever truly pulled off a decent rescue, it was after she was pathetically reduced by insignificant plastic just to make him look better. Same for William in terms of being a man-damsel, even worse than anybody. Could have her back in an investigation — since apparently she can’t do that on her own now nor with her protege despite being a Pulitzer winner (insert reduction of her skill and intelligence here) — but her life will never be safe in his hands. He will always be a liability, in a way he can’t pay forward nor return when she needs it. The life saving will always be one-sided. And he is not brilliant and clever and personally challenging enough like say Lois is to Clark or Felicity was to Oliver or Iris is to Barry to ever feel like any kind of an equal partner.

And then there’s Lena. Lena may “simply” be human like others, but she has the bravery, the brains and by extension the tech to save Kara in the way Kara uses her brawn and cleverness to save her in return. And the best part is, even still Kara doesn’t have to dumb down her intelligence nor skill set to hold her own and stand by Lena’s side, nor vice versa. Even physically in the bedroom which was a “controversial” topic recently. They can be together like normal (albeit carefully - like she probably had to with any past lovers and even with Mon-El as well to a degree since he wasn’t nearly as strong as her) just like Clark and Lois can. Or else Lena can develop a dampening tool should Kara want to let loose. And doing so isn’t a “reduction” of Kara because she’d be the same way on Argo. Kara’s truest original self had NO POWERS. Kara’s greatest “superpower” - the core of who she is as a hero - has never been her physical abilities, it’s been her heart. Her selflessness and hope. So to suggest that her choosing to temporarily dampen her yellow sun-produced physical powers to let loose with her human lover half the time is “reducing” her, suggests a complete lack of understand of Kara Zor-El entirely, as both a Kryptonian and a person.

My point is, unlike with others: Kara and Lena can have it all together. Because they instinctively and naturally - as naturally as breathing - love, protect, challenge, believe in, inspire and perfectly balance each other, and have since the very beginning.

They are literally a yin and yang. Red and blue. They are perfect partners. And they’ve proven they will stop at nothing to keep the other safe and save each other’s lives. Always, and forever, even after facing the worst conflict they could’ve ever faced. And unlike others, neither of them have ever had to be forced, trained, nor pushed to have each other’s back and save each other. They’ve always done so instinctually. Which is why the idea they toyed with that Lena could’ve become a major threat or weakness after spending so long being a vital ally and her greatest strength was so frightening for Kara and viewers... but it never happened. Because Kara/Lena are not Clark/Lex, and were never meant to be. And as always, in the end Lena still saved Kara’s life, even risking her own and standing up to her oldest friend, effectively her sister, to do so.

And most importantly, from the very beginning Lena was protective and helpful to both Kara and Supergirl. And that’s the funny thing. From day one, even through any conflict big or small, Kara always had Lena caring for her and keeping her safe as both Kara and Supergirl. And Lena always had Kara caring for her and keeping her safe as both Kara and Supergirl. The irony is they both had both sides of each other all along. They just didn’t know it. And when those sides finally merged after so much build up and tension, it was temporarily messy. But such is any long-time culmination or heated expansion. Hell, the Big Bang was complicated and messy. But then afterwards, oh, afterwards it was beautiful...

And that’s on being soulmates.
