#dracula daily first timer
Text
This is my first time ever meeting Jonathan Harker and I have to say he seems remarkably calm about how incredibly suspicious everyone around him is acting.

As a Dracula Daily first-timer this year (I didn’t know about it the first time and missed it the second time) I’m loving all the new mini holidays we get because of the dated format!
I love mirror day, lizard day and cowboy day (today!)

The Dracula Daily Sexyman Bracket that I've been following recently announced it was cancelled due to terrible behaviour by participants. I didn't have any trouble in Tales of Sexyman, and I hope that continues here.
In light of that, though, I just want to say... remember this is a silly poll for fun. We're not voting on any objective criteria or how well written a character is. This is meant to be very shallow and based entirely on how hot they are to you, personally. It's not that deep so let's have fun!
As an extra note, now that we're using Tumblr polls, they come with a built in 24 hour timer. I usually log on to update the day's polls around noon my time, so if I get on to post the winner and the poll still officially has 45 minutes on it, I will not be waiting unless it's really close. Based on the last tourney, it is exceptionally unlikely that an extra hour would make a difference if someone is already winning 70/30, for example. And if I always waited for the timer to run out, the starting time for the polls will just keep getting pushed further and further back.
So, the poll ends when it is convenient for me. That will be roughly 24 hours, but possibly only 23. I'll let it run to the end if the characters happen to be neck and neck.
If you're curious about how the match-ups were determined, it was a combination of numbers and vibes. The top 4 scoring characters were split into the 4 quadrants so they couldn't eliminate each other until the end, and nobody in the top 8 could go against each other in the first round.
Then I split everyone up into loose categories based on vibe, so that in the first round matches would be between characters with similar appeal. That way, votes would be based more on the individual character and less on whatever archetype the voter finds more attractive.
In all, I tried to find a balance between pitting characters who are loosely in the same category of appeal and popularity against each other, but also not wiping out top contenders right away. We've got to have multiple big faves make it to the end so there isn't a clear front runner right away. Not every match is as well balanced as the others because sometimes there just was no better pick when keeping all the restrictions in mind, but I did my best.
But nobody expected Yuri to get voted out in the second round, so I'm pretty excited to see what dark horse emerges here!

Time as a Motif in Whump
- Whumpee who did something minor in the past once, and suffered no consequences for it at the time; but years and years later, the snowball of their actions (now as large as a truck) rolls down the opposite side of the hill and runs them over. Slowly, they realize that it all started because of them.
- Whumpee watching the clock as they sit alone in an old, rusty cell, waiting for someone to enter
- Whumper who has a rigid schedule, with the words “evil lair” written in their daily agenda. One of their friends catches a glimpse of their planner and looks at them weird, because what in god’s name does THAT mean? Eventually they find the truth about Whumper, and try to free their victims, only to end up as one themselves.
- Bruises turning different colors as a means to show the passage of time when there is no clock okay I might just use this for my thing actually djdjdjdjsjsjslnk
- Whumpee so afraid of death that they feel as time is physically creeping up on them “Time is a predator; it’s stalking you.”
- Caretaker setting a timer for every thirty minutes to check on a sleeping Whumpee, when they have other things to do
- Nail, hair, and beard growth to show passage of time (bonus points if Whumpee gets taken out of whatever situation it is and gets a full makeover after and looks like a completely different person)
- Archaeologist Caretaker unearths an ancient being that was kept locked underground for a millennia and shows it tenderness for the first time in its life
- Whumper finds an ancient recipe for summoning a deity involving human sacrifice and decides to try it to see what happens, purely for fun Taste the Blood of Dracula, anyone? [imposing death glare] “The first.”
- Whumper breaks Whumpee’s watch and gives it back, so they know that time no longer exists for them; they don’t deserve time

I am soooo interested in knowing what kind of a guy Bram Stoker was. What would be his reaction be to 100,000 people collectively losing their shit over their friend Jonathan Harker for 6 months? 125 years after publication, at that? Would he be happy? Confused? Would he want to be part of it, if he were in our place? Would he be a vampire named Matt e-mailing all of us himself?

Look, today's entry genuinely terrified me. Like for the first time I'm feeling actually nervous. I'm not really feeling particularly jokey and like, of course I'll see the memes and reblog them but like, right now I'm scared. For the first time this horror novel is horrifying me. Jonathan is alone and lonely, they are looking into each other's eyes and lying while both know the other's truth, the Szgany didn't send his letter, either because they're with Dracula, or they didn't understand, or because Drac realised what Jonathan was going to try and snatched it out of force. I can't pick the worse of the three options. Mina doesn't know what the hell's going on, he was unable to send her his letter, everyone else is having a grand old time back in England, he is well and truly alone. God, what is going to happen? Dracula is playing a deliberate game and that's much scarier than the kind of horror that comes from supernatural beings just being themselves

Every time I see someone refer to the Dracula Daily fandom as the Dracula Daily fandom I'm like honey, no. We are not a fandom. We are a bunch of old timers gathering everyday at the inn discussing the letters which that darling old kid Jonathan sends us every day, worrying for his life.

My #1 post of 2022
The fact that Lucy Westerna's 3 boyfriends are also boyfriends with each other makes me So happy. But Mr Seward's lightly panicked diary entry seems like foreshadowing, like bad omens

1, 6, 11, 17, 19 and a ~question of your choice~ for the book asks 😘
book you’ve reread the most times?
oh you know it's the gruffalo by julia donaldson and axel schaffer. as a primary school teacher it is an all timer and i can recite parts of it from memory even though i had never read it until maybe five years ago.
come to think of it, we're going on a bear hunt by michael rosen is probably close as well. and as for novels it's either the thieves of ostia by caroline lawrence or... maybe lola rose by jacqueline wilson? as an adult things rarely pass three or four rereads for me, and those were easily in the double digits.
6. what books have you read in the last month?
NOT MANY. i have committed the crime of being busy and ill but i have managed the goblin emperor (a perennial comfort read), a thin ghost and others by m.r. james, "dracula" (i finished dracula daily okay), and black roses by simon armitage. my currently reading is much longer and includes about a third of h is for hawk, which is excellent but VERY heavy going.
11. what non-fiction books do you like if any?
i do like non-fiction books but usually lean towards history and nature writing rather than popular science and contemporary stuff. notable exception is fermat's last theorem by simon singh, which i picked up on a whim at a fair book stall and ended up absolutely devouring. very accessible history of a fascinating mystery with a satisfying ending. history wise i've moved from reading mostly around world war one towards reading a lot about early medieval britain. i also fucking love a book called 'under another sky: journeys in roman britain' which is a travelogue about roman ruins around the country that i have read two and a half times.
17. top 5 children’s books?
i am going to cheat and do 5 picture books and 5 "chapter" books because otherwise i will combust. and again in no particular order!
the giant jam sandwich by john vernon lord and janet burroway
don't let the pigeon drive the bus! by mo willems
funnybones by allan and janet ahlberg
hoot owl master of disguise by sean taylor
the gruffalo by julia donaldson
limiting chapter books to ones i actually read as a child just to make it even harder for myself
the wee free men by terry pratchett
matilda by roald dahl
the roman mysteries series by caroline lawrence (FORMATIVE)
narnia but specifically dawn treader/the silver chair by c.s. lewis (elite duo)
milly molly mandy by joyce lankester brisley
19. already answered!
and for my own choice...
8. what is the first book you remember reading?
according to my mum i was reading narnia before i have concrete memories of existence and while i do not doubt my mum the first memory i have of reading anything is of sitting around a table outside my reception classroom reading an oxford reading tree book with no words, just coming up with our own to explain what was happening
the searchlights model of reading >>>>>

CalmWriMo Week 1
This first week of NaNo/CalmWriMo was much more successful than I expected! I wrote every day and, on most days I even surpassed the daily word count the NaNo website calculated (with my headstart). I hadn't even planned on keeping up with my word count, but I'd already added the project before I decided I didn't want to commit to 50k and I didn't want to leave it empty.
I will finish re-writing this draft well before I reach 50k, though, and I expect I will slow down considerably once I have to come up with new things again. Unless I get a burst of inspiration like the one that led me to write 5k words of Dracula fanfic in one day...
Tumblr media
As for my other goals; I've sort of used a timer by listening to this album that's 20 minutes long, but I did end up just continuing after the music stopped. I haven't overworked myself yet, though, so it's all right.
Limiting my time on social media was actually not too hard this week since I was so focused on writing. We'll see if that remains the case!
Daily word counts under the cut.
Started with 9153 words, ended with 17531.
day 1: 2366 words
day 2: 2189 words
day 3: 882 words (+ 5035 words of Dracula fanfiction)
day 4: 1392 words (+ 1689 words of Dracula fanfiction)
day 5: 1559 words

trying something new tomorrow. hopefully the app will work as planned. a timer every once in a while will go off and i'll edit a post here to say what i'm doing and if that's what i want to be doing. going to force myself to be PAINFULLY honest. will probably grimace through a lot of distraction / tumblr / TikTok / sulking notes
note to self: tumblr is NOT what i want to be doing EXCEPT for:
- one ten minute check (at most) in the morning to see my notes and check out those people's blogs and scroll my feed a bit
- a 5 minute afternoon check (at most) to see what's popped out of my reblog queue
- a 5 minute evening check to look at my feed and add things to my queue
- maybe once i've watched at least three more MP100 eps (wanna finish rewatching seasons 1 and 2 before starting 3), then i can add a half hour to hour of evening tumblr for Dracula Daily goofing :)
IF I'M ON TUMBLR AND IT'S NOT ONE OF THOSE THINGS / TIMES, I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON TUMBLR
also:
• if i'm NOT doing what i want, say what i DO want to be doing and why. might require some brainstorming at first if i'm feeling sullen or stubborn, and i might aim for short term goals much of the time instead of long term, like watching a Mob Psycho 100 episode after i've done so much homework.
maybe even award myself by messaging a friend memes after i've accomplished some things
Tumblr media
and reminder to send morning cow to friend between 8:30 and 9 BUT ONLY AFTER I'M ACTUALLY OUT OF BED
(remember i can take a nap later if really needed. but please get up)

So...Dracula in real time is ....kinda excruciating.  It’s much, much worse when you can’t just speed read through it.
So that’s fun.

i'm scheduling this post to remind myself to talk about it again. but for dracula daily first timers: today is the day where dracula, the novel, cuts from jonathan's writing (end of chapter 4, june 30) to mina's first letter to lucy (beginning of chapter 5, may 9). in the novel we get all of jonathan's perspective first. imagine going from "Good-bye, all! Mina!" immediately to "I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air." pure agony
