e(M)esis BLUE [SFM2023]
DO NOT REPOST / EDIT / TRACE / MONETIZE MY ART FROM OTHER SITES.
Author’s comment:
Happy Halloween everyone! Here's my Screenshot redraw! Where is this scene come from? Well... Do you remember my first doodle of my Pyro's cosmetic? I promise myself to make an art out of it, just to tell you a story. :) The reason why I got into this franchise; I saw this user I've followed, where they kept reblogging TF2 characters. The colors, the cinematography, the spooky atmosphere... It took me eternity in there, to get my courage up of my curiosity. This featured, fan film is titled "Emesis Blue" (2023). It was created in Source Film Maker; that took 5 years of crafting by none other than the studio, Fortress Films. It has 7 (seven) chapters to keep in track where you remembered last time you've seen it. It was a fantastic horror experience that got me invested, so much plot points and scenes caught me off-guard that I can't look away! It became one of my favorite horror films, & I wish I wasn't joking about TF2's actual lore of being comedic source material. If you love horror, realistic casts and great cinematic animations, you have to see this. It's longer than you think. With that being said, I'm curious about TF2's gameplay and creations. Boy, It lives up a cultural icon to undead negligence from Valve's lack of actions. It's bittersweet; I love this game and I'm glad to be part of it; but I can't be always positive all the time or complaining if they listened to us. I can be only hope things gets better. I hope you enjoy my smallest contribution, have a wonderful day and, happy fortress-ing with you. <3

My Dad and I like to talk about a lot of stuff. One of the things he's been fascinated by is media transmutability and using existing media to make new things. One example he mentioned is "This Spartan Life", a talk show done in the first person shooter Halo 2. This reminded me of the many many animations that many many creators have made over the years out of a game I've liked for a while and unfortunately have only recently been able to start playing; Team Fortress 2. One film in particular stuck out in my mind. I brought it up, we discussed it and after a while he agreed to watch it with me. That was a week or so ago.

Last night I watched Emesis Blue with my Dad. He was a bit surprised at how little dialogue there was but overall we both really liked it. The stylized design of the nine mercs and the other models works in this film's favor, giving the film a sense of identity that a more conventional live action film wouldn't have. It reminded my dad of the comic Sin City. It is a story with quite a lot of violence, which I think is to be expected considering what it's based on, but even then, it's not gratuitous, not much you wouldn't see in the game proper. It's in support of the plot, and even if there's not as much dialogue as other films, the visual storytelling makes up for it. Also the references to other horror works such as the shining are a nice touch.
One element I like in particular is the fact that the film misleads us so well. At first it seems to be a standard noir outing, especially regarding the storyline of Jacques and Columbo. There's a short fight and a mcguffin in a briefcase is introduced. But once we reach Conagher Slaughterhouse, there's an uncanny eerieness that quickly comes over the audience and never really leaves. We have no way of knowing how much of what we see is real or not, and neither do the characters involved, and nowhere is this doubt in reality shown more prevalently and brilliantly than in Dr. Fritz Ludwig.
Tumblr media
Of all the stories told about the tf2 Medic I think this is the greatest I've ever seen. In game, Medic is famous, or infamous, depending on perspective, for being not quite all there in the sanity department. The kind of person who will brag about stealing someone's skeleton. The kind of person who can and has performed soul-transplantation multiple times. The kind of person who will casually mention implanting someone with a fully functioning baboon uterus pregnant with triplets, only a slight exaggeration. He's crazy, he knows it and we love him for it. In Emesis Blue however, this component of the Medic's character, the concept of being mentally unwell, is shown with care and nuance. He is never referred to by his class, but instead has the full name, Dr. Fritz Ludwig. This well-meaning but unstable man is put on a downward track from the moment we first see him, by forces he can neither understand nor control. He blames himself for Jeremy's kidnapping and later death, and wants to find a way to save or at least avenge him or redeem himself. But once he does so and the brothers are dead, his hope is only to survive. Every time he must fight for his life it deeply affects him as he is faced with unbelievable hallucinations. Is it some twisted effect the malfunctioning respawn machine is having on the world around it, or is it his own sanity slowly abandoning him. We see other characters hallucinating, but him? He has no idea. Fritz is constantly fighting a losing war with his own troubled mind, and the situation he's stuck in and trying so hard to get out of is only making it worse, as he gets closer and closer to what the enigmatic undertaker in black has already become. An unstoppable undying force of violence. Not even the others are safe from this, as Jeremy, Stalingrad, Mundy and Jacques clearly show.
Oddly enough however, the film ends on a somewhat bittersweet, if not uplifting note. The two timing schemer Archibald is dead, so is that asshole Jacques, and with no one else to run the company and its involvement in the gravel war coming to light, it's clear that it's going to crash and burn. Good riddance. Mr. Doe survives and makes it out of the funeral alive, secure in the knowledge that many, if not all crimes against him and the other mercs will finally come to light. Fritz is the last one holding the briefcase and even gets to finally reconcile with Jeremy at Dell's bar in the afterlife, even if he respawns one last time soon after. But by far the greatest thing about this film, and the thing that made up for the minimal dialogue for my dad, is the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is nothing short of mesmerizing, there's very little music, only just enough to supplement the tone in a few scenes. All other times the ambient sounds of the environment are all the scene needs to establish how creepy, surreal or hopeless the tone of a scene is. The nigh-omnipresent contrast of red and blue throughout this film, directly calling back to the opposing teams and their perpetual pointless war, is employed to masterful effect, whether to indicate a turning point in a scene, or to illustrate how conflicted a character is. It's simple, maybe even a bit obvious, but it's great nonetheless.
More than anything, watching this film feels like descending into madness in a way that I personally haven't seen an animated film do before now. The feeling that you have while watching Emesis Blue is like swallowing a hungry parasite, and I mean that in the best possible way. It comes upon you slowly but surely, you almost don't perceive it, and by the time you do, it's already got its fangs into you. It nestles deep inside your brain and squirms there long after the credits have run, so that hours later, awake in your bed, you're still thinking about it. Visceral. Terrifying. Beautiful.
Emesis Blue is a modern work of art. My dad thought it was a bit lacking in the script department, but I loved it. If you like your horror with existentialism, surrealism and lots of guns, then I recommend you check it out. It's available on YouTube and I only hope that Fortress Films projects will continue to entertain us in the future. Until next time, how long have I been waiting to do this one?

A Little Emesis Blue Headcanon
I always thought Fritz’ reaction to burnt Spy was… interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, he’s obviously shocked to see it. But I have a theory that he wasn’t just thinking about past respawn failure victims and their injuries when he saw Spy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the plague doctor means different things to different mercs, because they’re sharing a nightmare. And in Fritz’ POV, the plague doctor is a nightmare version of his silent personality. They both move eerily smoothly, they both don’t speak, and despite the quite personality having no mask, he doesn’t emote much.
There’s a lot of fire imagery around Dr Ludwig in this movie.
Tumblr media
There’s candles on the casket he’s trapped in, and the Plague doctor is the only person around to put them there. The fact that he put so many on a rickety wooden casket implies that he wants the candles to burn down and set the casket on fire. Causing burns everywhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet again, we see something evil with a mask, using fire to attack Fritz. Note how the M burn is on the right side of his face and very close to his eye.
You know who else has a mark under his eye?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The quiet one. It’s under his left eye. Something must have happened to it, otherwise he would have equally red bags under his right eye.
Tumblr media
In addition to Fritz having the burn on the other side and more of his cheek, the eye injury can’t be credited to the roulette scene. All the worst carnage was on the back of Ludwig’s skull because of the placement of the gun barrel.
So what happened to funeral Medic?
Tumblr media
When Fritz sees the plague doctor, he’s always in the dark. He also seems capable of controlling shadows. This leads me to believe that the quiet Medic must be able to visit Fritz in his inner world.
In DID [formerly multiple personality disorder], there’s something called a headspace or inner world. Personalities can interact with each other and sometimes, the Core personality which is what Fritz probably is.
Inner worlds vary a lot in how many settings there are, if there’s fake townsfolk like NPCs, and how much the personalities can control their environment.
My best guess at the moment is that wherever Fritz was when he encountered the quiet Medic in his inner world, it was very dark and the quiet one had powers related to the dark.
Maybe most of the other personalities can’t access the part of the mind where Fritz is at, but the quiet one can. That might help explain why he thinks he’s schizophrenic and is so afraid of the personalities being evil.
Tumblr media
Let’s be real, funeral Medic is very off putting even to the audience; imagine that but it’s using your face. Now imagine being Catholic and believing in demons. You probably have a light in your hand, because it’s dark, right?
Tumblr media
I think Fritz saw this for the first time and threw a lit candle or lantern directly at his face. Leaving the red scar under his eye and making Ludwig afraid of the quiet one coming for revenge.
That would explain why Plague doctor was reaching towards his face and making smoke/shadows creep around. It would explain why Pyro chose to brand him on his face. And it would explain the look he gave burnt Spy.

[i.d.: 4 part screenshot repaint of emesis blue, of the russian roulette scene. images as follow:
close up of blue soldier. text stylized to look like a closed caption reads: “SOLDIER: You’re going to make it, Fritz.” the scene is in very blue light.
blu medic, bloody, seated across the table from soldier, holds a revolver under his chin. he is half lit in red light. “MEDIC: I know.”
“[SFX: BANG!]” the muzzle flare from the revolver lights everything in sudden bright light. medic shoots his brains out.
the scene takes a wide shot. soldier, spy, and previously medic sit at a table under a lightbulb, black briefcase on the table. medic is in the family guy death pose, the revolver by his side. the scene is still largely blue, save for medic in a red spotlight. reactions are as follow: “SOLDIER: NO! / SPY: Goodbye, Dr. Ludwig.“ /end i.d.]
yes i did 4 paintings for a barely noticeable joke
references under read more :)

[i.d.: 4 screenshots of the scenes referenced in the redraws. /end i.d.]
hey thanks for making it this far :) here is a lovingly rushed drawing of the fourth image
Tumblr media
[i.d.: rough sketch of spy and soldier standing at a table. they both look at a dead medic in the family guy death pose on the floor. soldier is frowning. /end i.d.]

Fun fact: Dr. Jörg has little dolls he made of Ludwig(Red medic) and Fritz(Blu medic). Dr. Jörg has a bit of an obsession with both medic’s and basically works for both of them without the other’s knowledge. Despite Ludwig and Fritz being enemies Dr. Jörg wishes he could be in a polyamorous relationship with both of them.

realized i havent posted here much so, umm,
who wants to hear about my blu team headcanons ^__^ this is just my rundown of how they work, what they're like, and even weapon loadouts
Tumblr media
ok so im going to roll with the teams being clones, but i dont want to make any sort of drama to be just about that, like that whole existential dread of being a clone thing. its been done to death and i have nothing new to say for it (besides, i'd assume the inital cloning process was years ago when they just got hired, by now the novelty would of worn off and weirder stuff would of happened for them to even care or worry about that.) so what i'm thinking is that there's no way everyone would have the exact same experiences after they get cloned, so everyone just splits off into their own paths and they become their own individuals almost. and interacting with themselves from the other teams isnt "oh thats literally me :(" but more so "oh thats literally me and i need to be better than him >:(" so theres always this bit of competition between everyone; an infinite loop of anything you can do i can do better.
as for everyone individually...... (i'll also throw in a ⭐ for whoever is the "master copy" of themselves)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu scout: short stop / mad milk / stock bat
accidental honorary delivery boy. when miss pauling is busy with the actually important work, admin sends this scout around the teufort area to send out weapons and other mann co. products. red scout sees him as a bit of a poser poster child and they butt heads often, especially when red scout is off-shift while blu is making deliveries.
blu soldier: rocket jumper / b.a.s.e. jumper / market gardener
if not maybe a bit more of a conspiracy nut and more compliant to the company, i guess the most similar to his original version? can't beat perfection i guess, not a lot of notes here but they probably bite each other for fun.
blu pyro: decreaser / shotgun / neon annihilator
not visually different or note worthy either, but whatever she and red pyro have is unspoken, vicious, and brutal. they will tear each other limb by limb anytime they're in proximity. definitely another reason that fuels most of the team's fear towards them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu demo ⭐: iron bomber / scottish resistance/ nessie's nine iron
strategic, cool, and a bit of a schemer. a real master at his craft with sticky bombs and planning traps. red demo actually likes him but blu HATES him since he (red) got the eyelander and he (himself) didn't, so he's very bitter towards him (wow this is confusing.)
blu heavy: tomslav / family business / eviction notice
goes missing from base a lot, no one knows why. he seems to be doing illegal assassin work both inside and out of company payroll. both heavies actually are in contact often and blu gives a good chunk, if not all, of what he makes to him. i'd assume any of the clones visiting anywhere outside of the immediate tuefort area would be problematic and would have restrictions to prevent two of the exact same person from walking around in the world at once, so blu heavy lets his other self take it so long as it goes directly to his mom and sisters. if he can't visit them personally, at least him knowing they're stable financially and doing well is more than enough for him.
blu engineer ⭐: rescue ranger / wrangler / wrench
the dell conagher, enough said. he's the most in contact with admin behind miss pauling for her own purposes. he'd rather not think about his red counterpart, but i will say that this version does not have the gunslinger. that was all red engineer post-cloning. but he does have the only australiam tool between both teams so it balances out maybe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
blu medic ⭐: overdose / vaccinator / solemn vow
he thinks hes dr fritz ludwig from emesis blue 🤣🤣🤣 tries VERY hard to be a cold collected scientist but ends up being more neurotic and jumpy. screams a lot. actually maybe dislikes his team? and loathes his own red copy for actually trying (who btw (red) is having a great time knowing his existence is an abomination to god, its even an affirmation he tells himself in a mirror.)
blu sniper: huntsman / razorback / kukri
ironically one of the few blu team members that actually stay put in the base. he doesnt call his folks as per aforementioned restrictions, but he has no beef with his red counterpart for that. the worst they do is get extremely competitive; theyre at the top of their game and even have stand offs of just aiming for hours until someone flinches.
blu spy ⭐: revolver / black rose / dead ringer / red-tape recorder
the man, the myth, the legend. more carefree and unserious than red spy, thats partially because he doesn't know about scout's relation to him. red spy found that out post-cloning, he's missing that one bit or character development that makes him a more mature and cold mercenary, but at this moment he's none the wiser. so aside from expected spy vs. spy shenanigans, their conflict is a bit more deeply rooted. he actually visits the red base a LOT, to only a few people's knowledge. makes a lot of long tangents.
