I've been thinking about a what if for gold and mold

It's pretty simple

Let's say one of the Batfam was chasing killer croc and they come across reader and they managed to save his life

So reader begins to get clingy with them, but not in a sweet "were family again" no, reader is very traumatized and uses them to remind himself he is still alive.

So he's not hugging them, he's clasping their forearm with enough strength to leave a mark, because he wants to make sure he can still move his hands.

And he talks to them, but not about their day or something like that

Reader is asking then simple trivia/math equation, to make sure that he can still have a conversation,

So while the rest of the family is jealous of the time they spend with reader, the member in either is horrified or tries to take advantage of the situation (depending on which member the scenario is for, I decided to keep it in n general)

A very interesting idea! Hope you don’t mind if I add onto it a little! In this scenario, you were still shot, but were rendered in a brain damaged state and the Batfamily picks up the pieces. And because you weren’t thrown into the cavern by the thugs, you don’t meet the Megamycete. (Note: this will provide insight into the Bats for future chapters. Read at your own risk.)

The Bats had been looking for the Joker, but instead found Killer Croc and gave chase, following him to Gotham Woods.

He forced his way into an old cabin and as they approached it, heard a gunshot, forcing them to surround it and enter from all directions.

They didn’t know what they expecting, but seeing you, lying on the floor with blood pooling around you and surrounded by three thugs and Killer Croc.

The sight of you, his baby boy, spread out on the dirty floor of this disgusting cabin, dying, fills him with a rage, one that burns brighter than his rage for Joe Chill.

In a flash, he takes all three thugs down, leaving Croc for the rest of his children while he carries you out of the cabin and rushes you to the Batcave, already telling Leslie Tompkins to be there with her med kit.

When the others return to the Cave, they see him looking over the doctor’ shoulder as works diligently to bring you back from the brink of death.

As she works, Bruce calls Alfred and inform of what happened, causing the butler to tear into him from the other side of the world.

When Alfred yells at him for not being a good father and ignoring you for years, guilt lands on all of them like a sumo wrestler.

When they look at one another, asking when was the last time any of them talked to you, they realize that they knew less than nothing about a brother that’s been living with them for years.

They sit around the cave in silence for hours, drowning in their collective guilt and promising that if you make it through this, things would be different

They’d give all the love and attention you could handle and more, including you in their post-patrol meals, taking you out on the town, and spoiling you rotten.

They’re only brought out of this state when the doctor exits the surgical suite and tells them that she managed to stabilize you and extract the bullet from your brain, which made the relax.

But when she said that you were brain damaged, stuck inside your mind, only able to speak phrases from your memories, they all felt the world around them collapse.

They made plans to make up for their years of neglect and beg for your forgiveness, and now, they can never atone for their sins.

Dr. Tompkins provides a few places they can admit you to, ensuring you’d be given the utmost care, but Bruce declines it immediately.

“He’s a part of our family and we’ll care for him,” he vows.

He has you moved to a bedroom on their side of the manor, an empty one next to his, to be precise, moving all your belongings and buying anything he thinks you’d like in hopes that some part of you would feel at home.

They all move back to the manor to care for you and abide by a schedule that took them hours to decide on.

Alfred is the first one to enter your room everyday, placing your breakfast in your feeding tube and helping you use the bathroom and change your clothes.

He insists on doing this, no matter how much the others beg to take his place, because he feels ashamed that he failed in his responsibility to you.

He knew that the family didn’t pay you the attention you deserved and thanks to his lapse in judgement, you’re reduced to a shell of your former self.

He’s resigned to doing this for the rest of his life, hoping to make amends.

Bruce always comes just after he finishes, sitting next to your bed, talking to you about anything he can think of, hoping that somehow, it would get you out of this state.

It doesn’t, of course, but he always listens when you mutter about whatever your mind allows you to say.

He notices that you tend to talk to him about your Momma more than the others and he feels like even more of a failure.

Truth be told, he didn’t remember your Momma, at least not until he looked her up.

She was an up and coming writer he had met at some fancy party, they both had a little too much to drink and that’s how you came to be.

When he looks back at how he treated you when you first came to live with him, he wants to go back in time and beat the living shit out of himself.

You lost your Momma, were forced to leave your home, and all you wanted was your father to make you feel like you weren’t alone.

He wasn’t man enough to do the bare minimum.

He lets his tears fall while he wipes yours as you say, “Momma’s in heaven?”

“Yeah she is, baby,” he whispers. “But don’t worry, Daddy’s here.”

Dick pulls out all he stops for his big brother act.

He comes in, taking over for Bruce or standing in when he has to leave.

“Hey, baby bird,” he exclaims every time he enters. “How’s my favorite little brother doing today?”

He always uses his time stretching your limbs to prevent atrophy and shows off his acrobatic skills, hoping it would impress you.

By the time he’s done, Alfred delivers your lunch, which he places in your feeding tube.

He wishes you were able to chew solid food because he totally would spoon feed you.

Jason comes in and out of all of them, he feels the most guilt about how he treated you.

He’s harped on Bruce for forgetting all about him for years, not knowing that he’s done the same to you.

And the memory of him giving you that black eye makes him want to tear himself apart as penance.

“You really drew the short straw when they were giving out families, huh, kid,” he jokes.

He spends most of his time reading his favorite books to you and telling you trivia about them and their authors.

He spends the remaining time crying, his head pressed against your body, begging for your forgiveness.

He totally kills those three thugs when Bruce isn’t look, hoping that act of revenge makes up for his behavior is some way.

Tim comes in after him, pretending not to notice the tear stains on Jason’s face or how red his eyes look.

He goes back to how you two first met, thinking about how he could’ve done things differently. How he should’ve said something.

He knows what it’s like to be ignored by your family, god knows he wasn’t his parents’ favorite child and they only had him.

He uses his time to play your video games, either on the giant tv in front of your bed or siting next to you on the bed, the brand new laptop he bought for you between the two of you.

He 100% your games, getting every achievement possible and even buys new games he thinks you’d enjoy.

He listens to everything you say, committing it to memory and answering back no matter what it is.

“Fear the Old Blood.”

“Bloodborne,” he answers. “That’s a tough one. But you seem like a guy that appreciates a challenge.”

When he discovers the beginnings of your game and the book you wrote all your ideas for it, he devotes all his free time to bringing it to reality, personally developing it and following your book to the letter and when it’s released, everyone knows it was made in your honor.

Steph comes in with Cass since neither of them have the courage to come in alone, ashamed of how they treated you.

Steph spends the entire time talking, filling the room with talk to drown out the awkward silence.

She goes on about anything and everything, from her visit to the coffee shop to her nightly escapades.

“I swear, Kite Man is obsessed with me! I think he wants to be my nemesis and I keep telling him it’s not gonna happen!”

Cass just sits there, not even able to look at you due to the weight of her guilt.

Bruce had taught her how to live in a family and she couldn’t show you the love she shows the others.

Damian is after them, followed closely by Titus and Alfred the Cat.

“Good evening, brother,” he says, hoping for a response, but knowing you’ll never be able to answer back again.

During his time with the League of Assassins, he was taught that one can never redeem themselves after failure and so it must be avoided at all costs.

He thought himself above the rest of his siblings, worth of being the heir to both the Demon and Bat. That he was the very definition of perfect

Seeing your frail body, lying there, doomed to live out the rest of your days stuck inside your own mind?

He knows he’s imperfect in every possible way.

When you first met, he was threatened by you as he was led to believe he was Father’s only blood son, the one who would inherit everything both Bruce Wayne and the Batman possessed.

He knew you weren’t a threat, his trained eye telling him you couldn’t defend yourself against Drake, let alone a real threat, but he just had to go and attack you what his sword to assert his dominance and place in the family’s hierarchy.

He could’ve just ignored you like the others, but no, he had to go and actively make your life more difficult, insulting you at every chance and sending his animals to attack you.

And when Pennyworth told him the pen he stole from you was your late Mother’s?

For the first time in years, he actually sheds a tear.

He spends his time either in your room, his loyal pets on either side of you while he draws you in his sketchbook or paints a complete portrait of you to be mounted in the living room.

Sometimes, he paints scenes of you two together, some of them have you standing next to each other while others have you playing some game.

He wishes you two could do this, but for now, these portraits will do.

Other times, he places you in a wheelchair and pushes you through the gardens (he fought tooth and nail for that privilege), telling you tidbits about the birds you see or the flowers you pass by.

Everyday, he wishes that you’d come out of this vegetative state so you two could walk together, but until that day comes, he’ll take up this responsibility without complaint.

By the time his time’s done, Alfred serves you your dinner and that’s when they leave to patrol Gotham, each of them hugging and kissing you.

And when they get back, Bruce carries you down to the dining room so you can be a part of their feast and watch movies with them.

They failed you before, but they won’t do it again. All of them will repeat this, day after day. Year after year.

They just wish you could talk back so they can make their apologies properly.

Drawing idea or not, what do you think of Alfred and Dr. Leslie Tompkins together?

Leslie Thompkins is the Lesbian Grandma Ever to me. She hates Alfreds guts in a brotherly fashion. She would sell him to Satan for a corn chip but she has saved his life before and would do it again in a heart beat. They carpooled to gay bars and pride parades and riots for decades. She is over at the manor 3 times a week yelling at Alfred and Bruce. Alfred pesters her about potential girlfriends even more frequently.

Trans Dick Grayson Head canons

He knew from super young that he was a boy. Like he was 3 or 4 telling people he was not a girl. I like to imagine his parents just kind of rolled with it. Like they live in a circus. Being weird is like... a prerequisite or something. Maybe Richard is what they were gonna name him if he had been born male so he chose that then found out that Dick was a nickname of Richard and the rest is history.

All this to say, he'd been living as Dick Grayson for years by the time he met Bruce.

This is how I think Bruce found out. So Dick wasn't born in the United States (no idea if this is canon or not but for the sake of this head canon that is the assumption I am operating under). So it would probably take Bruce a bit to get all of Dick's papers like birth certificates and other forms and he's very confused as to why he got a girls birth certificate?

Dick *walking into Bruce's office*: Hey B

Bruce: Oh good, I wanted to talk to you. Do you have a sister or a female cousin you haven't told me about?

Dick: No???

Bruce: Ok well I'm trying to get all your papers sorted and I think Haly may have sent me the wrong ones because these are for a girl named [insert dead name of choice] Grayson.

Dick: What? No, thats me?

Bruce *now very confused*: What???

Dick *confused at Bruce's confusion*: Ya? I was born [deadname] but thats not my name anymore?

Bruce *realizing this means his new tiny son is trans* hnn

Bruce asks him a few days later if he wants him to change his paperwork so it says Richard Grayson and has his sex marker as M. Dick is kind of confused why it matters but is just like sure?

The Puberty Talk is very awkward on Bruce's front. He ends up talking to Dick about hormone blockers to hold off on puberty for a bit which Dick agrees to. He starts blockers at 11.

At 13 he starts on a low dosage of Testosterone under the guidance of Dr. Tompkins and a pediatric endocrinologist.

Bruce does all of his T shots for him and they make a little event out of it. They day they do the shots they take a night off from patrol and order take out and eat it on the couch while they watch a movie. These are also the only days Alfred lets them eat ice cream straight out of the carton. (Bruce still goes on patrol but only after Dick goes to bed. It wouldn't do to have a very noticeable pattern of days he takes off).

Because of this Dick never goes through female puberty, combine that with the fact that everyone knows Bruce Wayne adopted a son, he's pretty much stealth.

When he's 16 he starts talking to Bruce about getting bottom surgery (he doesn't need top surgery seeing as he never grew breasts). He has all three bottom surgeries over the next year.

I like to think that he just... forgets people don't know. Like it doesn't occur to him that to everyone thats not Bruce, Alfred or Leslie he just looks like a cis dude. Maybe when he's like 17 he goes to pride and wears a trans flag or paints the trans flag on his cheek or something. The papparazi take a photo of him and it becomes Big News.

They hold one press conference to be like "ya I'm a trans guy, I've always been a trans guy. No stop asking about my transition that is private medical information"

He becomes more involved in the trans community after that.

Extra: Maybe he is an olympic athlete as well. obviously he competed in mens gymnastics. Imagine the debates that would cause.

Stephanie Brown Rambling Incoming

Stephanie’s relationship with Gotham and the rest of the bats, especially Jason and Dick, is such an overlooked thing because.

Stephanie, Jason, and Dick are all more or less the same character in three different fonts. All three have very similar character arcs, more similar than the other robins, and similar personalities with the main differences coming from either metatextual reasons like the time their being written and specific writers preferences for them, and the situation that their in.

People talk about Jason and Stephanie’s similarities all the time but it goes a lot deeper than just the surface level of them both having died and the similar stories of their parents. Stephanie is one of the only Bats that are relatively cool with murder. She’s attempted it before. And unlike other characters who have internalized the whole “we don’t kill thing” Steph seems to only follow that rule in order to make Cass, Bruce, and Tim happy.

Stephanie, much like Jason, understands the position of the victim in a way that many of the other Bats seem unable to. In fact, some of them, like Bruce and Cass, are much more likely to identify with the Criminal than the victim.

This gives Steph a unique perspective on crime and Gotham that she only really shares with Jason.

On the other hand, Steph goes through a pretty similar character arc as Dick, starting off as a relatively cynical and angry child and growing into a more optimistic person through vigilantism. It’s important to note that Steph and Dick, more than any of the other robins or even bats as a whole, were destined to be vigilantes. They chose to be vigilantes without outside encouragement from Batman or prior training. I hate to reference the Robins comic but in that comic when their put into the “idealistic” lives that Bruce thinks they would’ve had without him, steph and Dick are the only ones still in “the life.” Damian, Tim, and Jason have nothing to do with vigilantism in Bruce’s ideal reality, but even here Bruce can’t even delude himself into thinking there’s any world where Steph and Dick atenta fighting for justice.

The main difference between Dick and Steph has less to do with them as people and more to do with where they are as characters, with Stephanie being much younger with much less history, and the other characters reactions to them. A big reason Dick is where he is as a person is because of Bruce and the Titans belief and trust in him. That’s not something Steph has ever had. Bruce barley tolerates her presence during her Robin run, and the Titans actively reject her while she’s Robin.

This leads to a bigger trend with Steph that shows a major difference in the way the Steph is treated out of universe in comparison to the other robins and batgirls.

In DC comics, characters can usually be sorted into two types of characters. There are the more active characters that exist in both their own mythos, and in larger comic crossover teams and events. Nightwing is allowed to exist in both the Batman mythos and in Titans comics. Black Canary is allowed to exist in Green arrow comics, birds of prey comics, and Justice league comics. These characters are also allowed regular cameos in comics that have nothing to do with them.

On the other hand, more self contained characters like Leslie Tompkins or Jimmy Olsen are only allowed to exist within the context of the mythos they where created for. You’d be hard pressed to find Dr. Tompkins in something unrelated to Batman. These characters are allowed to be characters, but only in the context of the environment.

Most of the Robins are allowed and expected to be one of the active characters. Their leaders and basically and extension of Batman. DC loves Batman, so they wants characters that are basically extensions of him anywhere they can.

That’s why it’s so strange that Stephanie is treated more like a self contained characters only allowed to exist in Batman and related comics than most other Batman characters.

She’s never led a team, unlike the other Robins. She’s never had a consistent non-bat non-gothamite friend. She’s barley even allowed cameos.

Even Duke, who’s a much newer character, has already been allowed to exist on a team and interact with non-bat characters like Black Lightning and Katana.

Every single one of Stephanie’s important relationships, except her relationship with her mother, is with a bat. What makes this extra sad is that with the exception of Cass, Tim, and Damian, she’s not very important to them.

Dick and Steph should theoretically have much more relationship than they do. Dick and Damian are very important people to each other because of their time together as Batman and Robin. Yet Stephanie isn’t awarded the same type of relationship with Dick despite the fact that she was batgirl while he was Batman.

They’ve worked together before, and the two of them are both very important in Damian’s development. But these things are not reflected in their relationship with each other.

Stephanie tends to be discarded and forgotten both as a batgirl and as a Robin, which is tragic considering what a compelling and unique character she is.

Robins have been defined by their relationship with Batman and how he perceives them for a long time.

Dick is famously the perfect version of Bruce, the man Bruce wishes he could be. He’s hope and light and good. Jason is the exact opposite, the worst possible outcome in Bruce’s eyes. He’s the antithesis of Bruce’s ideals and he’s good at it. Tim is Bruce cynicism and practically. Damian is still growing, but in my mind he’s Bruce’s skill and empathy. Duke is an embodiment of the people, of Gotham itself.

I think that Stephanie is a kind of mix between Duke and Jason. She’s an embodiment of the people, yes, but more specifically the people Batman has failed. The kids of criminals, the people who were forced into a life of crime.

She’s a revelation of Batman’s hypocrisy and failures. Had Batman caught her dad earlier, had the justice system not failed her, her life would’ve been much better. She wouldn’t have been a vigilante.

She’s an embodiment of vigilante justice in a way that none of the other Bats really are. She didn’t come into this trained by the best and with super advanced tech. She didn’t have Batman to save her from every mistake. Stephanie is what happens when the average citizen gets a little fed up and decides to take matters into their own hands.

That’s part of why Bruce resents her so much. Bruce inherently comes from a privileged place that makes him unable to understand Stephanie and the people she represents. He doesn’t understand how a parent could be such a danger to their kid that the kid would rather the parent dead. He doesn’t understand why a girl with living parents and a house could want to become a vigilante. He has a fundamental disconnect from Steph and her world.

And just to preface this, I’m talking specifically about modern Batman and how Batman is portrayed during Stephanie’s Robin run. There are many versions of Batman whom most of this doesn’t apply to.

I really don’t know where this was going, I just had a lot of thoughts.

Gotham Season 3 Episode 18 "Light the Wick" Preview

Gordon learns what The Court of Owls plans to do to the city in an all new episodes of FOX's hit DC Comics show, Gotham. As Gordon races against the clock to stop a destructive threat from the Court, Bruce dives deeper into his training with the Shaman, and The Penguin searches for Nygma. Barry) reveal their next move to Bruce, and Ivy comes to Selina’s aid in the all-new “Heroes Rise: Light The Wick” episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, May 15 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Gordan travels a dangerous path as he must infiltrate the Court, trying to learn their secrets and stop their weapon before it's too late. This causes even more strife with Lee, who continues to see Gordon as the man responsible for all of Gotham's problems. Leslie Tompkins listened to the rattle in your chest and shook her head. You'd been in an out of consciousness, burning with fever and delerious. Alternating between crying and pleading before crashing back into sleep; In some private hell.

"Poor thing," Leslie said softly. "She had a half a day- maybe less if she'd been on the streets in this state."

Jason cringed and couldn't look at you. All he could hear was you telling him to just get on with it. You sounded so small and so hopeless. And when he picked you up, you'd been weaker than a kitten. There really was nothing left.

When he'd upset your nest, the fragile peace you made to live in, the streets had chewed you up and spit you out. And he wondered if you hadn't been depressed and panicked if you would have fared better.

"Whatever you have to do," Bruce said, glancing at Jason. If you died, Jason would never forgive himself. It may be the only time he'd feel bad about having blood on his hands- and Bruce didn't want to risk losing Jason to the guilt.

"Sir-" Alfred said from the door, "Mr. Kent is here."

"Why-"

"He wants the young lady."

When Jason tenses with a soft growl, Bruce and Alfred exchange looks. This could get ugly. Really ugly.

"I'll talk to him," Bruce said quietly, "Excuse me, Doctor. If you need anything- or if she says anything-"

"I'm staying here," Jason said, folding his arms. Unwilling to leave you. Not wanting you to come around- if you came around- with Dr. Tompkins and Alfred. You didn't know them. And if you thought you were going to be killed... He hoped he'd be a little familiar to you. Enough to keep you calm.

I'm prefacing this by saying Danny Fenton is Jason Todd he died at 13 instead of 15 anf the fentons found him in the cemetery they then took him to Dr Leslie Tompkins as she was Jassmine Fentons pedestrian ( that's a doctor who specializes in children) back when the Fentons briefly lived in Gotham. she told them who Jason was Robin and all and begged them to adopt him and give him a loving home. They, of course, can't say no he's an abandoned child from multiple broken homes whose "father" is a possibly violent crazy furry. ( say what you will, but their is definitely something wrong with bruce). And besides the data they could get from just checking up on Jason's vitals was groundbreaking, this kid was living proff that people could be luminal. Living proff of so many of their theories of they also immediately fell in love with him the first time he actually came too consciousness in Leslie's office accidentally called them mom and dad. So Leslie made jason a new identity as Daniel James, "Jay" Fenton. Before I forget, Jazz was staying with Leslie at the time and also helped convince her parents to adopt Jason, not that they needed much help. Anyway the Fentons know Danny use to be Jason Todd and that he was Robin that he died in a fire caused by the Joker and that he had come back from the dead (hell they were there when he dug himself out of his own grave.) They also know that he hated talking about it and still has nightmares about his old life. So they do their best to give him space whilst still giving him support as his family. The point is they know that their son has died and come back at least once ( Jason has yet to tell them about the time Two Face shot him or all the various gas attacks he "survived") so they really should have seen the whole phantom thing coming. In their defense their first theory was that Phantom was some kind of death Oman or a banshee like ghost, their second theory which led them to forming a truce with phantom was that Phantom was a bit of Jason that stayed in the Ghost Zone and formed into an independent entity. But still, they knew that phantom had to have some kind of connection to their son, and to be honest, once that realized that phantom was genuinely trying to protect people, it wasn't that hard to come to the conclusion that he was ghost formed from the emotions their formally dead kid specifically taking on aspects of Robin. So once Jack and Maddie learn about Danny/Jason being Phantom, they are horrified at the prospect of having almost captured and experimented on him even if it was with the intention to protect their children. and angry with themselves for not realizing sooner how heroic Phantom is. Maddie vows that no one will ever hurt her babies, not the so called Justice League, not the Light, not the GIW, which turned out to not even be a legitimate law enforcement agency, not whatever Amanda Waller is doing friend or not Motherhood comes first. And certainly not some fucked up demon who can't even create his own portals.

This part is for the Titans who did show up for the party and stayed for the tearful/ curse word ridden reunion of Dick Grayson and a not 15 year old DannyFenton/Jason Todd. While the adoption of most of the Titans is symbolic dick and Ravens are legitimate in dicks case its because Bruce never adopted Dick just had him as a ward. So dick gets actual adoption papers after he and Danny/Jason stop hugging and crying (DICK IS HUGGING AND CRYING DANNY/JASON IS SWEARING AND TRYING TO PUSH HIS DUMBASS BROTHER OFF OF HIM) also it turns out that Danny/jason wasn't the biological son of Willis and Cathrine Todd he was the biological son of Gomez and Morticia Addams specifically he was their first born child and they want him back but they can't just take him from his family so they decide to seduce Jack and Maddie instead.

Whumptober 2022: Day 24 - Fight, Flight, or Freeze

Prompt: Blood Covered Hands 

Summary: After watching Damian almost bleed out to death, Jason is left feeling disconnected with himself. Dick follows him home to make sure he’s okay and without being asked too offers his support where he needs it.

No matter how much he tries to remove it, the substance doesn’t leave his skin. He rubs his hands raw trying to remove the blood that coats them but it isn’t getting him anywhere.

He’s been stood at the bathroom sink for who knows how long by now and has tried everything to get the stains off his skin. He’s tried soap, hot water, cold water, disinfectant, shampoo, and yet nothing seems to be working in getting rid of the red that still covers his hands. He’s now considering to trying to use bleach, there’s a bottle of the stuff he can spot in the corner of the room, it’s very tempting.

Perhaps if he were in his right mind he would realise that his hands are in fact clean and he’s only causing his own skin to bleed now instead. However since that is not the case, he’s currently not in his right mind, all Jason can see is Damian’s blood plastered over his hands. Blood that shouldn’t be on Jason’s body, blood that should’ve remained in Damian’s body which didn’t because of poor decisions and life threatening consequences.

Damian barely made it to Leslie’s clinic. The kid had been inches away from death. Jason got an update who knows how long ago on the kid’s health and while he’s still unconscious apparently he’s going to be fine with time, Dr Tompkins stitched him together, gave him blood and ultimately saved his life. Her actions, unlike Jason’s, saved the kid’s life, all Jason did was stand around while the culprit who wounded Damian escaped.

Snarling Jason lets out a noise in frustration and slams his hands down on the side of the sink before gripping it tightly. He grits his teeth and closes his eyes as what occurred that evening replays in his mind. Damian getting shot multiple times, Jason watching it from a distance unable to prevent it from happening and then how he had to make a decision on whether to go after asshole or stay behind to put pressure on the wounds. Knowing the kid could bleed out if his wounds weren’t treated Jason stayed behind until help arrived, by that point his hands and clothes and even the floor were covered in Damian’s blood and the kid was barely breathing.

Jason went with them until Damian got taken away to be operated on and immediately left once he heard Damian was going to be okay. As soon as he got into his apartment he made way for the bathroom and started to scrub at his hands to get rid of the blood, the blood that’s gone but has left a stain behind.

“Jason.”

At the sound of his name Jason’s head snaps up and he opens his eyes to look in the mirror opposite him, in the reflection he sees Dick standing in the doorway wearing a frown and looking concerned. By the looks of it, it seems like the guy’s been standing there for a while and Jason wonders how long he had been watching him scrub uselessly at his hands.

“What you doing here Dick?” Jason asks neutrally. He would normally snap at one of bat’s randomly appearing in his home but Jason finds he just doesn’t have the energy to do so that night.

“Damian is going to be fine. Leslie is going to keep him in overnight and if it all seems okay she’s going to give the greenlight for him to be transferred back to the Manor in the morning.”

Jason pauses, of course he’s glad to hear that, however he already knew that information. It doesn’t answer his question on why Dick is here in his apartment.

“Great,” he comments blandly, “Bruce is probably thrilled with that. It doesn’t answer why you’re here though.”

Dick sighs and shakes his head. The elder walks into his bathroom and comes to stop by his side, no longer able to see him clearly in the mirror Jason is forced to turn around to face him in order to do so.

Dick seems to hesitate before answering, it also doesn’t escape Jason’s notice how his gaze lingers at his hands before flicking up to look at his face. “I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

Jason snorts and looks back down at his red hands. “I’m not the one currently unconscious after almost bleeding out to death.”

“No. But you are the one who stopped that from happening.” Dick’s words are said with that no-nonsense tone he’s somehow picked up from Alfred. It’s infuriating because its hard to argue with that tone.

“I didn’t do much.” Jason says in the end, almost petulantly.

Dick doesn’t respond right away. Instead his brother leans over the sink and turns on the tap, he tests the waters temperature with his finger before gently gripping Jason’s hands with his own. At that point he hesitates for a moment, looking up at Jason with a questioning gaze but when Jason doesn’t react Dick continues on, he guides Jason’s hands underneath the lukewarm water and dabs at them with a clean cloth that materialized from somewhere.

That’s when it finally becomes clear in his mind that his hands are clean, the blood he had been long trying to clean off his skin was all just a figment of his imagination.

“You saved his life by putting pressure on his wounds. I know you would have wanted to go after the shooter but by staying with Damian you saved his life. You are the reason why he's survived today, he would have bled out completely before we were able to get him to the clinic.”

Dick points this out to him as he turns off the tap and moves to dry Jason’s hand with a towel. When he’s done, Jason’s hands are left red from where he viciously scrubbed at them and slightly tender to touch. Dick pulls away from him then, looking at him with a soft smile.

“It may feel like you failed today because after all Damian did get wounded and he almost died, however that didn’t happen because you were able to save his life in the end. It’s easy to say but we shouldn’t get caught up in the what if’s, that won’t do us any good. For now we rejoice in the fact Damian is okay.”

Dick’s speech leaves Jason feeling winded. He has no idea on how to respond to that. Normally he would either snap or make a comment about him being sappy, although for some reason Jason just doesn’t have it in him to do it. Jason currently feels drained and tired to the point that he doesn’t feel like himself.

Fortunately Dick seems to know that Jason needs his space in that moment, his brother steps away and starts heading out of the bathroom.

“Now I don’t know about you but I’m hungry. So you go and get changed and I’ll order us some take out.”

He’s gone before Jason could comment. Jason blinks at the empty space before shaking his head and accepting it. He knows what Dick is doing, his brother is giving him space but isn’t leaving him alone, it’s his way of looking after him without being all in his face about it. For once Jason finds himself easily accepting it, maybe some company that night won’t be such a bad thing after all.

Stephanie Brown is the only child of Charles and Crystal Brown. Her father is the super villain and Batman foe known as ‘The Cluemaster.’  Stephanie grew up unaware of her father’s criminal career until one night she woke up to a loud noise and sees Batman forcefully taken her father into custody.  Seeing the look in the girl’s eyes, Batman decided not to take her father in. Some time thereafter, Stephanie accidentally walked in on her father and several other crooks discussing a scheme. Stephanie fled her home and decided to make it her mission to ‘spoil’ her father’s criminal plans. This led to her becoming a vigilante and taking the mantle of ‘The Spoiler.’ She started off by spreading her father’s actions via the internet. Soon she took to wearing a costume and confronting the criminals herself. 

She wound up receiving aide and training from both Barbara Gordon and Selina Kyle. Ironically, Stephanie’s boyfriend at the time was Tim Drake (Batman’s partner Robin). Stephanie and Tim were eventually able to ascertain one another’s secret identities and they chose to fight crime together. 

Later, during a time in which Tim had retired his role as Robin, Stephanie stepped in and acted as the new Robin, assisting Batman as his sidekick. She was injured during an adventure and Dr. Leslie Tompkins faked Stephanie’s death, hoping it would convince Batman to discontinue his use of ‘child soldier’ sidekicks. The ruse was eventually unearthed and Stephanie returned to become the new Batgirl with the assistance of Barbara Gordon. Following the Nu52 reboot, Barbara Gordon has returned to the role of Batgirl and Stephanie has reassumed his guise as The Spoiler. More recently, The Spoiler became a member of Young Justice. The heroine first appeared in the pages of Batman Vol. 2 #28 (2014).

Had batdad ever tried to reconnect with his parents once they left? What are his parents doing now?

Alright, so personally I think it kinda parallels Bruce himself, because in a way, Batdad also lost his parents that night. Batdad was so young, and he saw something no child should have to see while he was comforting his friend. Basically cinematically, just Bruce with his face tucked against Batdad's chest, back to the crime scene and Batdad just looking right at it while softly reassuring Bruce. In his own way, Batdad was also traumatized by that night. It shaped his views on violence in general - it's why Batdad himself is a pacifist like Thomas Wayne was.

Anyway, only a few months after the funeral, Batdad's parents signed over his custody legally to Alfred and left Gotham. To be honest, I think they were a little scared of their child, because Batdad was becoming something far more mature and world-wise than they were prepared for.

Batdad was SO young when that all happened. I forget, but definitely in the single digits, somewhere from 5-8 years old. So really Batdad has spent most of his life with Alfred filling in as parental figure, as well as occasional support from Dr. Leslie Tompkins and Officer Jim Gordon. And even though his parents left him in the lap of luxury with the supremely capable Alfred, to Batdad... basically his parents abandoned him and didn't even try to contact him. So I don't think he'd exactly be eager to reconnect.

As for Batdad's parents, I figure they moved to Star City, across the country. Or even maybe Washington.

stephanie brown was born to arthur and crystal brown. The former of which was better known as the cluemaster, one of gotham city’s third-rate villains, considering how many times he was caught. he’s basically like the riddler but instead of leaving riddles he leaves clues. but because of how often his schemes were thwarted by batman the man spent the majority of steph’s life in and out of prison.

steph, tired of her fathers games, tailored a costume all by herself and took up the mantle of spoiler because she was determined “spoil” her father’s plans once and for all. using his own tactics she left clues behind for batman and robin (tim drake at the time) on where to catch her dad. and because of her relationship to man and knowledge of how he thought they allowed her to work with them that one time. after which batman basically told her to stop and live a normal life. 

as you’ll come to learn, steph never listens to a thing bruce says and kept doing vigilante work as spoiler long after, despite the man’s wishes.

sometime down the line she became pregnant from an ex-boyfriend, had the baby, and gave her up for adoption. 

all this time and history having spent with both batman and robin she didn’t know their true identities until bruce sought her out to train her after tim was forced to quit his role as robin. 

she trained as the new robin with bruce and the birds of prey for a few months before bruce fired her for disobeying his orders and being too careless out in the field. because her reckless nature reminded him too much of jason todd and he didn’t want a repeat of the situation with the former robin. and as fate would have it he wasn’t wrong to be weary.

steph going out in the field alone to prove herself to bruce and subsequently ended up captured by black mask. she was tortured for information on batman’s identity and as a result “died”. 

it was revealed later that dr. leslie tompkins helped her fake her death and that steph spent the year everyone believed she had passed away with her in africa recovering and doing volunteer work under an alias.

after her return to gotham she eventually took up the mantle of batgirl under tutelage from barbara gordon herself for a while before the once again taking up the mantle of spoiler.

‘Wanna a sip?’

Selina took the bottle Nikki was offering. Adding the smell of cheap booze to the list of things that now made her feel sick. She looked at the ring of the bottle, she wanted to drink it, she wanted to feel the burning liquid going down her throat, she wanted it to hurt, she wanted to do something she would regret later.

‘Selina?’ Nikki chuckled. ‘Are you high? You have been frozen like a statue looking at the bottle forever.’

She wanted to be high.

‘You know what? I don’t feel like drinking some lame cheap vodka.’

Nikki eyed her with confusion.

‘Alright…’ She cleaned her throat. ‘So, what you found out about how do we leave?’

Selina sighed.

‘There will be a boat coming in three weeks with more supplies for the construction of the new bridge, it will be in the harbour for a few days, I don’t know how many, we can go back with them. Pay someone to smuggle us in.’

Despite the government sending help, finally, it was still forbidden to leave Gotham, except in very special cases of you being really sick and in need to be transferred for a proper hospital or having a lot of money.

‘Three weeks? Geez, so long.’ Nikki complained. ‘I think we’ll need to be patient, then. Well, more time to think where we should go next.’

‘Look, Nikki, I don’t think-‘

She was interrupted by someone knocking on her door. Nikki and she shared a concerned look. It wasn’t like they were expecting visitors, or that Selina’s address was on the yellow pages.

Selina stood up from the ruined couch, took the knife from her thigh and went to the door.

‘Who is it?’

‘Selina? It’s me, Leslie.’

Selina made a half-confused, half-suspicious face to the door but didn’t open it.

‘What do you want?’

She heard Thompkins sigh from the other side.

‘Selina, please. I want to help.’

‘I don’t need your help. I’m not hurt.’ However, in some ways, that was far from the truth.

‘Selina… I know about the baby.’

‘Baby…?’ She heard Nikki ask confused behind her.

Selina opened the door as fast as she could despite the multiple locks she installed.

‘Get inside! Quick! Geez, are you stupid? Anyone could hear you!’

‘You wouldn’t open otherwise.’

Selina sneered at her.

‘So, Barbara told you. That’s what I get for trusting that nutcase.’

‘She just wanted to help you, Selina.’ Then she noticed Nikki. ‘Hello, I’m Dr Thompkins, you are?’

‘Yeah, I know who the Queen of the Narrows is, alright.’ She said apprehensive, but added later ‘I’m Nikki.’

‘Pleasure, Nikki.’

Feeling terrible uncomfortable by that whole setting, Selina turned to her friend.

‘Can you please leave? No offense, Nikki.’

‘Oh, it’s fine. Congrats… on the baby… I guess.’

Selina didn’t thank her. Her face was livid. Then she was alone with Lee Tompkins.

‘So, Selina. How are you feeling?’

‘How do you think?’ She snapped angrily.

Lee gave Selina that disgusting doe eyed compassionated look of hers.

‘I’m sorry, I know this is hard. I wasn’t a teenager back then, but I went through something like that before. I really came here because Barbara wanted to know if you were okay, and also to let you know you have options.’

‘Options? What are you talking about?’

‘Selina, you are very young. You have no income, this is not a place to raise a baby. If you want, we can arrange for an abortion.’

Selina felt the world side-track, she seriously haven’t thought about that. It was like the whole concept had been completely alien until Lee said those words. Abortion. She didn’t have to go through that. It was so stupid. Of course, the idea of her giving birth to a baby, being a mother, it was ridiculous. How could she thought that was no way out when it was so obvious? And yet…

‘You don’t have to decide now. Just think about it and come to my office then. I’ll go now. Take care.’

Selina spent the next three days thinking hard about what Leslie told her. It really seem the most obvious thing to do. Just terminate that pregnancy, that mistake, and just go forward with her life, her plans of leaving Gotham, of making something for herself elsewhere.

All her life, her first and most urgent imperative was to survive. That’s why she always had to put herself first, because since her mother dumped her in that orphanage nobody had. A child would change that. A child would have to make her put herself in second place. And experience had been teaching her over and over again why that was a terrible idea.

It was decided. She would have an abortion and everything would be okay. Or least okayer than before.

So why could she even imagine herself doing that? Maybe if it was someone else’s child, maybe if she couldn’t remember clearly how that baby was made and how she felt that night, the warmth of his touch, how sweet it was to have her name in his lips, maybe she would feel different. Maybe she would have no doubt when it would come to make the wisest choice. But it was hers and Bruce’s baby. And no matter how hurt she felt, how angry… She couldn’t do it. How could she? That baby was the only proof she had she was loved once. She couldn’t just make it disappear. And Selina knew that she was being stupid and would make her already shitty life a million times harder but she just couldn’t do it.

That poor kid would have the stupidest homeless teenaged mother.

Alfred found her in a back alley next to Leslie’s clinic feeding some local strays.

‘Good afternoon, Miss Kyle.’

Selina looked at him like he had said something funny and dumb, but other than that ignored him. Scratching the head of an orange tabby.

‘Nice day, isn’t it?’

‘I don’t know what you are trying to pull. But I have no time for it.’

She stood up from her crouching position and was ready to leave when he talked again.

‘Selina, I’m sorry.’

She stopped. He hardly used her first name, and even more rarer than that apologised.

‘It was very unbecoming of me to say those words to you. I know how you and Master Bruce care for each other. And I am grateful for every time you saved his life when I could not be there.’

And maybe it was the stupid hormones but Selina felt a lump in her throat.

Fighting back tears she turned her face to him.

‘She told you, didn’t she? Leslie? Or was it Barbara? That’s why you’re telling me this stuff. God, why do I keep doing this? Why do I keep trusting people that will betray me later? Look, I don’t need your help, or your pity or you money. It is my baby, I’ll take care of it just fine.’

Bruce had told Selina once that Alfred was an actor for a time in his life, and as hilarious and hard to believe it have been back then, she didn’t think even an Oscar winning actor could fake surprise that well.

‘Pardon? What did you just say, Miss?’

She panicked.

‘Just forget it. Apology accepted, let’s never deal with each other ever again.’

She tried to leave again, but he blocked her path.

‘No. You will explain to me what you have just said. Miss Kyle, are you expecting?’

‘I don’t have to tell you anything, Jeeves.’

‘Are you serious? Are you really with child? And it is Master Bruce’s?’

If she thought she was the most annoyed she could be, well, she was wrong.

‘Of course it’s his. What do you take me for? No, scratch that. It’s mine, just mine, Bruce left.’

He didn’t say anything for a while, and Selina thought he was finally letting her go.

‘Miss… I really do not know where he is.’

And maybe was how broken he sounded but Selina felt herself falling in that pit of despair she had crawled out far too recently to go back again.

‘I don’t care.’

‘If you need help, with anything-‘

‘Are you stupid? Or are your hearing already going bad? I don’t want your fucking help, and now get out of my way.’

But after that conversation Selina would always find food at her door, sometimes her squat was eerie tidier than it was when she left, and even her pile of clothes were now folded in orderly fashion and smelling fresh clean no matter how she avoided laundry day.

She knew what was up. And as nice as it was having someone taking care of her, she really hated that he was just doing it because of the baby in her belly. Also he was invading her privacy, how dare him!

So she went knock at his door.

‘Miss Kyle, what a surprise.’

‘I came here to tell you to stop.’

‘I don’t know what you mean, Miss.’

‘Oh please. I’ve already told you. The baby is mine. I don’t care what twisted plan you have, but you won’t be taking him from me.’

‘It is a boy?’

‘I don’t know, Leslie says it’s too soon to tell, but it doesn’t matter. Bruce’s participation was over when he pulled it out.’

Alfred sighed. He wasn’t mad at her vulgarity anymore, but he looked very tired, very sad.

‘Miss, as I told you before, I am sorry for what I said. And no, I did not try to apologise that day because I already knew you were with child. I really did not know. And I would never take a baby from his mother.’

Selina said nothing, he continued.

‘And I was not lying when I said I do not know where Master Bruce is. I have tried the best I could, but he is not using any of his money, none of his numbers are working anymore, my letters returned. I do not even know if he is dead or alive. That boy was my whole life, and now the only thing that might have survived of him is you and the child in your belly.’

Selina felt like her heart was turned to lead, it was so heavy it was hard to breathe. Bruce couldn’t… He couldn’t…

‘So what?’ She managed ‘It doesn’t mean you have any right over us.’

‘I know. But I am begging you, Miss Kyle. Let me help.’ And there was so much despair in his voice, Selina felt sorry for him.

'So you’re really not coming?’

Nikki pushed a piece of hair the wind had blown to her face, Selina hugged herself to keep warm, it was very cold in the harbour, she was grateful for the new larger jackets that Barbara had given her. She was dumping on Selina a lot of her pregnancy stuff, most of it was useless, why would she wear so many maternity sequin party dresses?

‘Yeah… Sorry about that.’

‘It’s fine I guess. But you are really sure about raising a baby in this place? I mean, it was already a dump before…’

Selina actually laughed at that.

‘I know, right? But, I think it might get better now. So many changes happening. Maybe it was a shitty place for us, but it won’t be for her. And my doctor is here.’

‘It’s a her now?’

‘I don’t know, I keep trying both.’

‘Oh, I know about that.’

They both giggled at the lame joke.

‘Good luck, Nikki.’

‘Thank you. Good luck you too, and the baby. It was nice to meet you again, Selina.’

We are, finally, about to reach the timeskip. I don’t know you all but I’m ready to have Bruce back, I miss him.

I hope I didn’t give a pro-forced birth vibe in this chapter, I’m veeeery pro-choice, and I tried had to not use problematic language when it came for Selina deciding to keep her baby.

Also, the whole Selina and Alfred dynamic was really tough to write, because as I said before, I don’t enjoy the characterization of Gotham’s Alfred very much. But I hope I made a decent job.

Origin

Alfred Pennyworth is the British butler and valet to the Wayne Family. He took up the role of legal guardian of Bruce Wayne after the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. 

Born under the name of Alfred Beagle, he grew up in England and joined the army once he became of age. He served in various conflicts all over the world, gaining skill as a field medic. After retiring from the army he became an actor, and later a teacher for the MI5, instructing its agents in subterfuge through the use of stagecraft. During this time Alfred received a special mission, loaning his services to the MI7. After this mission ended, Alfred was forced to retire from service, adopt a new identity and move to the United States of America. Alfred legally changed his last name to Pennyworth and started working as a butler for the Wayne Family, carrying over the family tradition, per his father's dying wish.

After several months, Alfred voices the desire to return home to continue acting. However, these plans are forgotten when young Master Wayne returns home from school early after being bullied. Alfred teaches Bruce how to defeat the bully strategically rather than using brute force. Armed with Alfred's tutelage, young Bruce manages to take care of his bully problem. Alfred stays on as the family butler at Bruce's request.

After the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, Alfred was named Bruce's legal guardian, however, social services combated the will thinking that Bruce should not be raised by a servant. However, Bruce managed to remain in Alfred's care by, despite his young age, bribing the social service agent into allowing Alfred to raise him.

Alfred raises young Bruce Wayne together with Dr. Leslie Thompkins a close friend and colleague of Thomas Wayne. Later, Bruce decided to travel abroad and Alfred stayed at Wayne Manor and begins a short lived romance with Dr. Leslie Tompkins.

Batman and Robin

Alfred remained as the sole guardian of Wayne Manor until the eventual return of Bruce Wayne, after many years of study and training. It is on his return that he supports Bruce's plan to take back Gotham City from the criminals and helps him as best he can. Alfred tends to Bruce's wounds after his first outing, but only after Bruce discovers a bat in the study that inspires him to don a costume to strike fear into criminals. When Lieutenant Gordon and his wife pay a visit to Wayne Manor while doing some investigation about the "Batman", Alfred helps Bruce disguise himself as a self-absorbed playboy millionaire and thus escaped suspicion of Bruce's "involvement" in Batman's attacks against the city mob.

After a successful first year, Alfred became the most trusted ally of the Batman, often providing everything to make the Dark Knight's quest easier. In the same was as Alfred as a father figure for Bruce, who he considered as his own son, he also played an important role in the inclusion of Dick Grayson as Bruce Wayne's ward and his smooth transition to become Robin, the Boy Wonder. However, in an effort to rectify past mistakes made with Bruce, Alfred tried his best to be a friend to Dick, more than he ever was for Bruce. As a result of this conscious effort, Alfred kept tabs on Tony Zucco, the man who killed Dick's parents and he would always plea the parole board to keep the criminal locked in prison once he was captured by Batman and Robin. Alfred did this for eleven years, keeping the truth from Dick and Bruce, but in the last year, his efforts were in vain and Zucco was released. Although Alfred considered this a deep personal failure, all unfinished business between Zucco, Dick and Bruce were promptly solved.

Enter Tim Drake

Alfred remained the most trusted ally of Batman and Robin, even after Dick Grayson's separation from the team after six years and during Jason Todd's time as The Boy Wonder until his death at the hands of the Joker. However, Alfred played a vital role in the introduction of Tim Drake into the Batman's life. When Dick Grayson brought Tim to Wayne Manor, Alfred was shocked to learn that Tim had deduced everything about Batman and Robin. When Dick joined Batman as Nightwing and fell for a deadly trap prepared by Two-Face, Alfred allowed Tim to wear the Robin costume and he took the youngster to Batman's location, where the two of them confronted the crook. Their initial confrontation allowed Batman and Nightwing to capture Two-Face shortly afterwards. After a succesful mission, Alfred convinced Bruce to allow Tim to become the new Robin. However, this also meant that Alfred was in charge of the initial stages of Tim's training before he could start training with Batman.

Sword of Azrael

Certain day, Bruce started investigating the case of a crime related to Carleton Lehah and apparently an avenging angel. Alfred traveled along with Bruce to Switzerland, where their helicopter was attacked by Lehah. Alfred and Bruce survived the attack and landed on the mountains, where they were attacked again, this time by the figure known as Azrael. Batman fought them away and he found a shelter to stay along with Alfred. Following their investigation, then went to a hospital where they confronted Lehah, who attacked Alfred and kidnapped Bruce. Alfred was later taken hostage by Azrael and his men, but he convinced them to work together to stop Lehah and rescue Bruce. They tracked down the villain back to America, where they rescued Bruce, but failed to capture Lehah. After this, Azrael, whose real identity was Jean-Paul Valley, joined Bruce to be trained as a vigilante.

Knightfall

Back in Gotham, Alfred noticed that Bruce wasn't the same after the moral defeat when Black Mask escaped from the law. Alfred's concern showed, specially after Batman's encounter with The General and also when he found Batman asleep on the batcave's staircase. During this trying times, Alfred was always present to tend Batman and Robin's wounds and he also tried to keep Dr. Kinsolving unaware of Bruce's strenuous activities.

Despite Bruce's intent on self-destroy, Alfred would keep reminding him about his affairs as Bruce Wayne. Alfred became aware of Bruce's decision to shut out Tim while he was working on a case against Two-Face, and he decided that Batman most certainly would need help. Alfred and Robin went looking for Two-Face and they saved Batman's life by doing so.

When the Riddler took over a TV show, Alfred took Robin to the place in the Bat-van and his assistance was essential in the capture of the madman, while Batman was trying to rescue Mayor Krol from Joker and Scarecrow. A few hours later, Tim went home and Alfred stayed alone at Wayne Manor, where he was knocked unconscious by Bane. By the time Alfred recovered, he noticed Batman was being destroyed by Bane and with all his strength, he managed to crawl out of Wayne Manor and walked to the Drake Manor, looking for Tim's help.

A few moments later, Alfred, Tim and Jean-Paul Valley rescued Batman from the streets. They pretended to be medical staff from Mercy Hospital and they took Bruce to the batcave, where Alfred did his best with the medical equipment available, but despite his efforts, Alfred knew that Bruce's back had been broken and he would be paralyzed for life. In order to give Bruce the proper medical treatment without exposing his identity, Alfred arranged for Dr. Kinsolving to come to Wayne Manor to look over Bruce. Alfred and Tim wrecked one of Bruce's cars to convince Dr. Kinsolving that Bruce had been in a car crash and he also acquired top medical equipment for Shondra to work at Wayne Manor without having to leave. A few nights later, Alfred helped Bruce after Dr. Kinsolving and Jack Drake were kidnapped and together, they started their quest to locate them, with their first destination being the island of Santa Prisca.

Resignation

Alfred and Bruce continued their quest to find Shondra and Jack Drake and after a failed rescue attempt at Santa Prisca, Alfred traveled with Bruce to his home land of England, where they tracked down Shondra and Jack with help from The Hood.

After rescuing Jack Drake, Alfred tagged along with Bruce on his search for Shondra, but they soon returned to Gotham, where doctors told Bruce to lay off. Alfred tried to get Bruce to rest, but Bruce was determined to track down Shondra and Asp, forcing Alfred to present his resignation as he wouldn't stand watching Bruce kill himself. As his last act, Alfred went to Wayne Manor to retrieve his stuff, clean the house and ask Jean-Paul to help Bruce if he could. After this, Alfred moved away from Gotham City and out of Bruce's life.

Months later, Dick Grayson tracked Alfred down to London, where he managed to convince him to return to America.

No Man's Land

His resourcefulness came to the fore during the time when Gotham was declared "No Man's Land". Batman was missing for weeks, leaving Alfred alone to watch the city. He used his skills as an actor, storyteller, medic, and spy to survive and collect information on the recently destroyed society. Alfred even used hand-to-hand combat in a rare on-panel fight sequence between him and a pair of slavers that ended with his rescue by a just-returned Batman.

War Games

After a whole year, the city was part of the country again and many changes came with it. Tim Drake stopped being Robin and Batman allowed Stephanie Brown to become the next Robin; a decision that Alfred opposed. When Stephanie was fired from the role, the greatest gang war broke out in Gotham and Tim was forced to return to his role as Robin. Alfred was responsible for giving him back his suit and welcomed him back to the Bat Family. located Nightwing after he was shot on the leg and took him to the mobile batcave. Alfred healed Nightwing and after the procedure was finished, Alfred forced Nightwing to stay in bed and prevented him from going out to battle. When the whole war was over, Alfred shared a glass of wine with Bruce and Dick, remembering past events.

Shortly after, Alfred delivered a videotape of a broadcast by Arturo Rodriguez to Bruce. The mystery behind the videotape caused Bruce to learn that someone was responsible for Stephanie's death and Alfred helped Bruce record a conversation among thugs on a night club in order to learn more about it and filtered the information for Batman. Alfred witnessed along with Bruce how the events of the War Games were solved by Bruce himself and he was glad to put it all behind.

Under the Hood

After a few days, Alfred was contacted by Lucius Fox, who was looking for Bruce. Alfred did his best to diverge Fox's attention as Bruce was extremely busy working as Batman. However, Fox went to Wayne Manor and Alfred was forced to call Bruce to talk with Fox. After the bad news about Wayne Enterprises, Alfred kept an optimistic mind, saying that Bruce won't feel the need for more gadgets and equipment than he already had. Shortly after, Bruce learned that Jason Todd was alive and became the criminal Red Hood. Alfred offered to remove Jason's Robin suit from the display case in the batcave, but Bruce wanted to keep it.

Alfred assisted Bruce on his quest to discover what happened to Jason Todd after his death and together they examined the gravesite and the coffin where Jason was buried. Alfred was concerned for Bruce's well-being and after long days of non-stop work, they discovered that there was never a body inside that coffin.

Later, Alfred received a package from Jason, delivered to Wayne Manor. Alfred took the package to the batcave and examined it thoroughly. He discovered a lock of green hair inside and an address as well. Alfred informed Batman about this and Batman asked him to run a DNA test on the green hair.

Batman R.I.P.

When Hush reappeared, he had performed a plastic surgery on his face to look identical to Bruce Wayne. With his new face, he tried to trick Alfred to let him into the Batcave, but Alfred had been warned by the real Bruce about Hush's plan and when the impostor broke into Wayne Manor, Alfred fought the villain with remarkable fighting skills for one so frail and old versus one so young. However, Hush managed to stab Alfred in the shoulder and was about to kill the faithful butler when Batman arrived. As the fight continued in the Batcave, Alfred activated the robotic T-Rex and distracted Hush long enough for Robin and Nightwing to arrive. After Hush was defeated, Alfred stitched Bruce's wounds.

Some time later, Bruce started dating Jezebel Jet and even revealed his secret to her. Tim Drake asked Alfred about Bruce's well-being and Alfred replied that it would be futile for normal people try to understand Bruce's mind. After this, Tim asked him about the DNA test between Bruce and Damian, but Alfred refused to tell him, just like he was indicated by Bruce.

A few days later, Alfred was washing the Batmobile and later he tried to heal some of Bruce's battle wounds, despite Bruce's reluctance. Bruce told Alfred about a new mysterious group called Black Glove and in order to learn more, he sent Alfred to watch and old movie by the same name. When Alfred returned home, he found the Batcave in flames and most of it, destroyed. He was soon ambushed by Le Bossu and his gargoyles, who beat Alfred to a pulp. Bruised and beaten, Alfred was held hostage by Doctor Hurt in the batcave and witnessed how the Club of Villains and the Black Glove used Batman's secret lair as their base of operations. As their hostage, Alfred endured Hurt's attacks and Scorpiana's torture methods. Shortly after, Alfred was rescued by Damian Wayne, who took Alfred out of the burning Batcave on the batmobile and they rushed towards Arkham to aid Batman, pushing an ambulance off a bridge, much to Alfred's dismay. After Batman's final disappearance, Alfred returned to the Batcave, where he found Batgirl making a list of heroes to create a team similar to the Outsiders, but with the intention of replacing Batman. Alfred suggested that the list consisted only of people seeking redemption for past actions much like Batgirl and he also suggested that she should let Nightwing be part of her plan, but ultimately she refused.

Shortly after, Alfred spotted Nightwing gliding towards Wayne Manor and he met the young hero at the Batcave, where he landed, seriously injured. Alfred performed surgery on Nightwing and removed two bullets from his shoulder, having learned the right procedure by watching Discovery Channel. Alfred dosed Nightwing, allowing him to recover and after Nightwing left the cave, Alfred analyzed the bullets and found traces of Scarecrow's Fear Toxin, leaving him no option but to inform Dick.

Alfred was present when Dick jumped from the stratosphere to Earth and witnessed the extraordinary feat along with Tim Drake. Shortly after, Alfred traveled to Japan to take care of some of Bruce's unfinished business. While in Japan, Alfred was contacted by Nightwing asking for leads on the latest case and Alfred gave him the required information.

A few days later, Alfred returned and having no one else to call, he summoned Nightwing to Gotham after Two-Face's reappearance. After the first failed attempt of capturing the villains, Alfred comforted Nightwing and told him to learn from his mistakes, just like Batman did in the beginning. When Nightwing finally decided to return to Gotham, Alfred picked him from the train station and took him home, where together with the help of Tim, they rebuilt the Batcave and agreed to continue with their mission in memory of Bruce.

Outsiders

After Batman's death, Alfred set up a new Outsiders team, in an effort to fill Batman's shoes with their combined efforts.

Alfred was concerned about Gotham's situation without Batman and he urged Nightwing to pick up the mantle of the bat and follow his mentor's steps by becoming the Batman, but Nightwing refused. Moments later, when Nightwing returned to the cave with an injured Damian, Alfred healed them both and encouraged Dick to finally become Batman. After Nightwing went to stop Jason Todd, Alfred allowed Damian to join the battle by sending him with Squire. When Dick came out victorious, Alfred, still at his service, witnessed how Grayson took the mantle of the bat and became Batman.

Some time later, Alfred learned that Vicki Vale was trying to prove a connection between Batman and Bruce Wayne. Alfred used Thomas Elliot, to impersonate Bruce and try to eliminate her suspicions. However, Vicki wasn't convinced and she went to Wayne Manor, where she revealed to Alfred that she had one of Batman's tracers to prove it all. Alfred used his acting skills to take the device away from her and avoided confirming her theory.

After Bruce Wayne's official comeback, Alfred joined Bruce on a worldwide travel to set up the Batman Incorporated organization.

Fun Facts

Alfred and Bruce started collecting first edition books after the murder of the Waynes and they kept doing it for the remaining of their time together.

He is the only member of the Batman Family that is allowed by Bruce Wayne to own a firearm.

Dick Grayson has referred to Alfred as his "best friend" on multiple occasions.

Alfred has admitted to having been drunk twice in his life; before he left England for America, and the night he left Gotham City.
