Just jumped into the 1000 Episode Fan Art link and grabbed Episode 334, The Final Conflict! I have a solid idea for The Final Conflict fanart entry, and I really hope FotF likes it! I grew up with some of the Odyssey cartoons, but it was the Blackgaard Chronicles that got me into the radio program and made me realize that the world AiO takes place in is much larger than the cartoons suggested. And in my opinion, The Blackgaard Chronicles is about hope and despair: Some of the characters are full of hope (Whit, Jack, Jason, etc), Eugene and Richard are somewhere in the middle given their experiences with forgiveness and redemption, and then there's the arc's namesake, who's full of despair (Blackgaard).
To me, Dr. Blackgaard in The Final Conflict is what you get when despair enters a morally broken soul. He wants eternal life, but without the Jesus part, because that would mean changing himself, and that bothers him more than he lets on. I want my piece to convey that brokenness, not enough to concern FotF and be denied, but just enough to show what despair looks like.
And yeah, I'm probably overthinking this arc to a degree, but whenever I hear Earl Boen's performance in the Final Conflict, the word 'despair' tends to come to mind.

Last year this month, I posted a MerMay piece featuring Connie Kendall from Adventures in Odyssey. Every May, several artists like me will post Mermaid-themed art to celebrate 'MerMay'. It's a great opportunity for us artists to work on our water themed art and characters. I can't recall who, but one fellow fan had mentioned Jules when I posted my Connie piece, so I thought I'd make Jules for MerMay this year. Maybe next year, I'll do Tasha or Jenny Whittaker...or Dr. Blackgaard as a shark, I don't know lol.
So yeah, here's MerMay 2022 vs. MerMay 2023!

Jason in The Final Conflict: "He could hold entire nations hostage. And do who knows what with the rest of the mineral."
Makes you wonder what would have happened if Blackgaard had won. What would be the worst case scenario.
But still with possibility of hope and a good ending...
Turn it into a truly world conflict....

In my childhood, I had the cartoons (or as I like to call them, ‘the Dylan Saga’). One problem with those is that the radio episode, ‘Dr. Dobson Comes to Town,’ confirms that they’re in their own timeline and continuity. Cartoon-only characters like Jesse and Dylan leave no impact on Odyssey the way Connie and Eugene do, because their villains and struggles either don’t exist technically, or are recreations of radio episodes (Escape from the Forbidden Matrix is essentially Gloobers!, which is a radio episode, for example).
I started out my radio-journey with the Blackgaard Chronicles, because I’d seen this cover in a Mardel Store and thought, ‘looks intense, let’s do it’.
Tumblr media
Because I didn’t start out with Album 1, Family Portraits, or Officer Harley, I didn’t really know about Tom Riley, Phillip Glossman, or any other really early Odyssey concepts or characters. All of it, I picked up as I went along with the Chronicles. The Blackgaard Chronicles not only made me fall in L O V E with Dr. Blackgaard, but also made me want to know more about Radio-Odyssey, so I invested in Novacom, Leonard Meltsner’s Saga, and now I’m a member of the AiO Club getting all the tea on Officer Harley and Renee Carter.
I would recommend starting with Album 1, Episode 1 ‘Whit’s Flop’. Starting from the beginning will allow for more context when you get to the heavier episodes like the ones that make up the Blackgaard Chronicles and Novacom. Just a suggestion :)
Happy Listening!
Anyone have good ideas for AIO episodes that newbies can listen to without having to know much about Odyssey? I’m trying to get some of my friends into it, I’m thinking of starting them off with Green Ring Conspiracy but I’m looking for other ideas too

i think it's pretty cool and mature of dr blackgaard that he didn't hold that time richard forced him to get on his knees and beg and snivel for his life at gunpoint against richard. he could have easily mentioned that when he was tazing richard to the point of unconsciousness and having him murdered by lackeys but he didn't. a therapist probably got rich off that one incident but he put in the work, he put it behind him, he said my past does not define my future. mental health king

Glossman: Sir, I'm afraid you've gone mad with power... Dr. Blackgaard: Of course I have. You ever tried going mad without power? It's boring. No one listens to you!

Farewell, Blackgaard brothers 💜💔
The Blackgaard Brothers were just two of the wonderful things Adventures in Odyssey gave us as fans! Regis Blackgaard will always be my favorite ever, and I will always love and appreciate Earl’s performances as him and his brother, Edwin.
“Good night, sweet [Edwin], and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Fun fact: Phil Lollar was going to name Dr. Blackgaard “Jonathan Dark”, based off of Mr. Dark. But he ended up being Regis Blackgaard. That was how I got into Something Wicked This Way Comes in the first place!

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes…”
Alot of people seem to have that one Ray Bradbury novel they absolutely love. Mine is Something Wicked This Way Comes. A great book to read at this time of year! I hope everyone’s having a happy Halloween season!

Dr. Blackgaard has my heart, not gonna lie…
I’m curious, did/do any of you Adventures in Odyssey fans have any Odyssey villain crushes?
as a child I had a voice crush on Philip Glossman and Dr. Blackgaard and Richard Maxwell

Glossman: We create stress and chaos, pitting parent against child, brother against sister, husband against wife.
Regis: Hmm! Uncle Screwtape would be proud.
Glossman: (confused) What?
Regis: Never mind.
