radio silence (chapter 1: misunderstandings)

twinyards week - day 1!!!! im going to be compiling these all in an ao3 fic at the end of the week, because they’ll all be the same au, and ((mostly)) in chronological order.

i hope u enjoy!

tw warning for child sexual and physical abuse, self harm, canon-typical violence, swearing, homophobia (aaron and andrew ((and nicky))’s backstories)

Ever since Andrew could remember—which was pretty much forever—he’d had an imaginary friend.

Well, sort of. His imaginary friend was a very distinct voice in his head called Aaron, who didn’t like his mother because she would always hit him, and leave him locked in his room whilst she went off with needles and men. Andrew was sometimes perplexed at how specific his imagination could be.

Aaron knew about Samuel, and James, and Harrison, because Andrew had told him, hidden away in a small, dark closet with his body shaking and aching. Why do they touch you? Aaron had asked, sounding upset. Probably because Andrew was upset, too.

I don’t know, his seven-year-old self had whimpered, lost and scared and alone. I don’t know.

Imaginary friends fell out of fashion pretty fast when Andrew finally went to school: Andrew Doe, the foster kid. Andrew Doe, the weirdo who talked to himself. Don’t go near the short one: He’s a freak.

He spent his time instead in the small, decrepit libraries that those schools had to offer, hiding in the corner with a book that was probably too hard for him to read but he didn’t care: He waddled through it, Aaron asking about what happened at the end of every chapter. He couldn’t read as well as Andrew could. Probably because he wasn’t real.

It was the realisation that Aaron was most certainly a detailed, intricate figure of Andrew’s imagination that forced him to stop talking to him. This lasted for years: The silence was almost echoey in Andrew’s head as he moved from home to home, none of them any good.

Until Cass.

She was warm and gentle. She baked him cookies and taught him how. Richard took him to the movies and drove him too and from school. They were the kindest people Andrew had ever met, and Andrew clung onto them fervently.

Then Drake, their son, came home. He was tall and broad shouldered and smiled like a wolf: He pinned Andrew down into the mattress and Andrew wished his pillows would just swallow him. Mornings were spent squirrelling away bloodied sheets and staring at himself in the mirror as hopeless tears rolled over young adolescent cheeks. Why me? He’d thought, desperate. Why me?

Andrew, Aaron said, astonished after all the years of radio silence. Is that you?

“You’re not real.” Andrew whispered. “You’re not real.”

Is something wrong? Something has to be wrong. Are you hurt?

Andrew ignored him in favour of finding the razor tucked under the spare face clothes in the sink’s spare drawer. When he climbed into the shower, he watched the water dilute his blood, and thought of the way that everything had a cost.

Officer Phil Higgins was an overbearing man who knew Andrew from a program for troubled kids within his area, where he gathered them all into a circle and forced them into bonding activities. Board games. Backyard baseball. ‘Buddy’ forming activities. Andrew was required to go, due to his ‘lacking social skills’, but he almost never participated. The pig never pushed him, never asked why he wore black long-sleeves in the middle of a Californian summer and never encroached on Andrew’s personal space, which was why Andrew continued to put up with the man’s antics.

The only actual conversation he and the pig ever had was when the man held Andrew back after one afternoon session, much to Andrew’s irritation.

“I went to a baseball game on the weekend,” he said, like it was something Andrew wanted to hear. “I met someone very interesting.”

Andrew stepped out of his space and made for the exit: When Phil said “Andrew, please listen,” he stood, the revolted shudder making the entire frame of his body tremble. He glanced over his shoulder for merely a second, but the officer took his chance. “I met a boy just like you. He looked identical to you. I think you might have been separated in the system at birth. His name is Aaron.”

That was enough for Andrew, who sprinted away from Phil’s curious gaze. In a brief lapse of control, he silently yelled at Aaron: You’re real?

Yes. Are you?

Yes, Andrew thought, devastated.

I met a police officer, today. He said that you’re real, Andrew. That you’re here, in California. Are you? Can I see you?

Fuck off, Andrew snarled, wishing he could run away from the voice inside his own fucking head. He didn’t want Aaron anywhere near the Spear family, with Cass’s gentle hugs and Richard’s genuine laughs. He didn’t want Aaron near Drake’s malicious intentions, facing the same fate that Andrew did every night. Fuck off, don’t talk to me, don’t come near me.

Andrew—

Andrew shut himself inside his bedroom and made a feral snarling noise, wishing he could cut Aaron out of his head. Rain splattered carelessly against the small window of the bathroom, so uncharacteristic of California’s sunny skies and relentless cheer that he had to look away.

Everything was wrong. Everything was so wrong.

It wasn’t until the pig himself came over and explained to Cass and Richard what had happened that Andrew decided to do something preventative: From the hallway, Drake grinned, fisting a tuft of Andrew’s hair in his too-tight grasp.

“We’ll have so much fun together,” He whispered against the shell of Andrew’s ear. “The three of us. Won’t that be exciting?”

That night, Andrew crept out with a flask of gasoline from Richard’s shed and a box of matches before Drake could sneak his way into Andrew’s room, walking to his school under the veneer of darkness.

He watched the baseball pitch burn, sitting in the batter’s cage and letting the heat lick his sweat from his skin. When the police arrived he went gladly.

“Don’t let there be any more kids,” Andrew insisted as he was being shoved into a cruiser. Phil Higgins looked at him, perplexed. “Promise me that there won’t be anymore.”

“Andrew, what are you talking about?”

It was useless. He burrowed into the corner of the police car and let the cool metal of his handcuffs around his bloody wrists draw him out of his head.

He did it for Aaron. He did it for the voice in his head, who could be real after all.

If that didn’t make him insane, he didn’t know what did.

The first time Andrew and Aaron met—in the parking lot of the Seattle Juvenile Detention Facility—they’d just stared at each other. Their mother had been too sick to come all the way to greet him, something about a chronic illness that probably wasn’t very chronic. Instead Luther and Maria, and their squirrelly son Nicholas, welcomed Andrew with open arms.

“We’re very glad to have you,” Luther said.

“Let’s go home,” Maria insisted.

They sat in the back of the rental car, venturing back to the airport with Nicky sitting purposefully between the two brothers. Forever an ice-breaker.

Andrew? Aaron asked, hesitantly. Andrew looked out the window. Please—I just want to know if I’m actually insane or not.

I hate that word, Andrew said, scathingly. Aaron looked down to where his hands were entangled in his lap.

Sorry, he said, and actually sounded like he meant it. He was kinda pathetic. Andrew finally looked around Nicky at his brother, who caught his eye. Aaron was littered with bruises and sickly pale, even if he tried to cover it up with his loose polo shirt.

Does she hurt you? Andrew asked.

Andrew—

I asked you a fucking question.

Slowly, Aaron nodded. Andrew settled back into his chair and glared at the seat in front of him, Maria’s tangle of curls peeking through the gap between the chair’s headrest and body, wondering what kind of woman Tilda Minyard would be, to give up one son and not the other, and then treat the one she had like shit. Ideas wafted across the empty expanse of his mind, forcefully blank to avoid exploitation.

That was fine. Andrew would cross that bridge when he came to it.

“No.” Andrew said. It was the first time Andrew had ever spoken to Luther, six months since being initiated into the Minyard-Hemmick household. He’d spent that time convincing Aaron of his plan to get rid of their biological mother, who continued to hit Aaron even when Andrew warned her not to. Aaron didn’t want his mother to die.

(She’s family, Andrew, he’d said silently. She’s family. Andrew had just looked at him and reminded him that he was family, and that they had always been there for each other, and that there was no way he’d leave Aaron now.)

“No?” Luther inquired. “But Cass and Richard would love to see you. They were very shocked when you were arrested. They’d wanted to adopt you, Andrew.”

“No.” Andrew insisted, voice hoarse. “You do not let them anywhere near Aaron.”

Luther still wasn’t sold. “Why not?”

“Drake - he -” Raped me. Because someone always was.

Luther’s smile was beseeching and patronising, and drained every last rivulet of energy from within Andrew, who was exhausted and angry at the world. He’d just found his family - why was fate so insistent on tearing it away from him again?

“I’m sure it was just a misunderstanding, Andrew.”

Misunderstanding. Misunderstanding. Misunderstanding.

Right. Of course.

Andrew turned on his heel and marched out of Luther’s perfect little living room, where he was sat on the white linen couches with a cup of tea and his little wooden cross on the mantelpiece. By the time Andrew had grabbed his coat from the Hemmick’s pristine entrance corridor and ignored Maria’s inquiry about staying for dinner, the plan was already in place.

People always underestimated the lengths to which Andrew would go to protect what little family he had: He supposed that lack of insight about Andrew’s limits would come in handy when orchestrating everything under their noses. The only person who knew him, really, was Aaron, but he spent most of his time hooked up on their mother’s shit to read whatever Andrew was up to now.

Andrew would kill Tilda. Nicky would come back from Germany. Luther would forget all about the Spears, and Aaron would be safe.

Perfect.

ofc i don’t mind! i’ll explain the two you asked for & a few that i love, so i hope that’s okay :D

nate growing up - labrinth is one of those songs i added then immediately went god, i am so good at this bc i loved it so much. basically, it’s a summary of andrew’s time in juvie. the song before this is sort of his breaking point with the spears after he meets aaron and dr*ke won’t stop taunting him. nate growing up, in my mind, is andrew growing up and cutting the ties that held him to cass in order to keep his brother safe. by the end of the song, he’s been released and is living with tilda and aaron.

my boy - billie eilish kind of jumped around the playlist a lot while i was rereading the books bc i knew i wanted it on there, but i didn’t know where to put it. i ended up putting it between arms tonite and last order which reads to me as andrew’s pov during the long bus ride to binghamton where neil asks andrew to let him go and in the locker room during the whole “thank you. you were amazing” moment. i like to think andrew would be more than a little suspicious by how neil was acting. also the lyric “he just sounds like he’s tryna be his father/my boy’s an ugly crier, but he’s such a pretty liar” felt too andrew for me to not include it.

the thanksgiving saga is probably my favorite section of songs bc of how well they flow (to me at least). 1) no one’s here to sleep - bastille is the moment andrew goes off to talk to luther, goes upstairs by himself, and spots dr*ke and spotting aaron afterwards, 2) fate - h.e.r. is one my sister found and is kind of the aftermath of thanksgiving when andrew is just laughing :( his inner monologue if he was able to comprehend what happened :(, 3) cough syrup - young the giant is andrew being sent off to easthaven and just not being ready for complete sobriety out of nowhere, 4) high to death - car seat headrest describes the entirety of andrew’s time at easthaven, just reliving his trauma and being put though even more while coming to terms with this side of himself that he isn’t used to anymore. (the voiceovers of a child shouting in the middle make me want to cry)

CPR Masterpost

Roughly 54% of Americans know CPR. That is shockingly low.

So, for those who don’t know, only half know, need a reminder or think they know but don’t, let ya boy educate you.

Pre-Physical CPR: Remember DRS (Doctors!)!

D: Danger. Is there danger nearby? Oftentimes people go into cardiac arrest due to, say for example, touching an electric fence and getting electrocuted. Following on from that example, are they still attached to the electric fence? Is the patient still in danger? If they’re in danger, leave them and don’t do CPR. Still call an ambulance though.

R: Response. Shake em, shout at em, call their name, anything! If they respond with words, don’t do CPR. They’re probably just out of it.

S: Shout for help. You’ll ideally want as many people who can do CPR around as possible. ALSO, CALL AN AMBULANCE.

Physical CPR: Remember ABC.

A: Airway. Lay their head back and open their mouth. Make sure the airway is clear.

B: Breathing. If they aren’t breathing, they’re in danger. Lay your head down on its side near their cheek. Use your eyes to also look if their chest is moving up and down. While doing that, if you can’t hear/feel the breath after ten seconds, they aren’t breathing.

Please note there is also a thing called Agonal breathing. If they’re gasping like a fish out of water or not breathing properly, THEY ARE DYING. It’s a brain reflex, they aren’t actually getting any oxygen.

C: Chest Compressions. Start 'em. Do them until you either physically can’t or the ambulance arrives. This is why shouting for help is important. Compressions are very exhausting and if you’re not physically fit you’ll tire quickly and need to alternate.

Extra Note:

Sometimes, if you’re really good and really lucky, the person may wake up. Often this is temporary. Still keep doing compressions. If they become verbal and tell you to, quote enquote ‘piss off, geroff me!’ There’s a good chance they’re alive now.

How To Do Compressions Properly:

Place the heel of the hand on the breast bone at the centre of the person’s chest. Place your other hand on top of your first hand and interlock your fingers.

Position yourself with your shoulders above your hands.

Using your body weight (not just your arms, trust me, if you just did your arms you’ll get very tired very fast,) press straight down by 5-6cm (2-2.5 inches) on their chest.

Keeping your hands on their chest, release the compression and allow the chest to return to its original position.

Repeat these compressions at a rate of 100-120 times in a minute until either: an ambulance, you get exhausted or you feel slightly tired and have a friend who can take over.

If all this is too complicated to remember, don’t worry. If you put your phone on speaker, the person on the other end will walk you through it in real time. If you can’t take away anything else from this, please take away this fact.

Misconceptions:

Q: Do I have to do mouth-to-mouth?

A: Nope! In fact, I’d advise against it. Mouth to mouth actually does little to help the patient and is arguably detrimental due to an exchange of germs. Just stick to chest compressions.

Q: Do I have to sing Nellie The Elephant?

A: Also nope! Any 100-120 BPM song is fine. There’ll be a list below.

Q: Am I pressing hard enough?

A: No. Unless you’re pressing 5-6cm or 2.5 inches down, you are not. It looks weird and wrong, but that’s because you’re literally acting as their heart for them. If you’re questioning if you’re pressing hard enough, you probably aren’t. If you think you are, push a little harder. It’s possible and very easy to not push hard enough, but there’s no such thing as too hard. Push them so hard they make a hole on the floor if you have to.

Q: Oh no! I heard a rib crack!

A: That’s good! Oftentimes, the ribs have to break in order for you to actually have any hope of successful CPR. Don’t stop because you heard a rib crack. There’s no such thing as pushing too hard. There is such a thing as not pushing enough. It’s better to have a friend alive with a few broken bones than your friend dead.

Q: The patient is a woman and I’m scared that if she wakes up she’ll sue me for touching her breasts. Should I risk it and perform CPR anyway?

A: Don’t worry. You’re protected by the Good Samaritan Law. I’m not a lawyer, so if any one who knows the law could possibly fact check me on this personally, but the Good Samaritan Law states:

“The Good Samaritan Law offers legal protection to people who give reasonable assistance to those who are, or whom they believe to be, injured, ill, in peril, or otherwise incapacitated.”

So even if the patient does wake up and your vital readings were wrong, the law should be on your side.

If you think someone needs CPR, don’t question the legal trouble it’ll get you in later. Just do it.

Q: Don’t I have to check for a pulse?

A: You could, but breathing is much more reliable. Locating a pulse can take a while. (Sometimes people can only feel it in their wrists, some people only feel it in their neck. There’s no one guaranteed location. Everyone is different. Unless you know that person extremely well and know their best pulse spots fir some reason, (I’m not judging your friendship,) chances are it’ll take at least 30 seconds to locate a spot. This is especially hard when someone doesn’t have a pulse.) Breathing, on the other hand, is much more reliable and quicker to do, (10 seconds check, let’s say you were slow and took 2 seconds positioning, that’s 12 seconds max.) Time management is extremely important during CPR and every second counts. I understand most American places recommend checking for a pulse, but everywhere in the UK, (including NHS.gov and the British Resuscitation Council (used by all nurses and doctors as gospel, pretty much unheard if outside of professionals apparently?) My mum also said so.

Wild Woman’s story, part 1: mega man 2, super adventure rockman/blackout, mega man 3

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS MY SELF INSERT AND THERE IS SELF INSERT x CANON SHIPPING HERE

THESE ARE BASED ON THE ARCHIE COMICS (I GO BY GAME ORDER AFTER COMICS END)

ALSO THESE POSTS ARE GONNA BE REALLY LONG

Mega Man 2: Wild is activated some time before the events of this game. One day while on the job, she meets Crash Man, and the first meeting is a bit...awkward (as in Crash threatened to blow her up at first). After this though, they keep meeting up, and they become close friends. Despite this, Crash never actually tells Wild that he’s a Wilybot, in fear that it would scare her off.

At the start of the arc, Wild is in Light Labs with the others when Quick Man attacks the lab. She goes with Rock to assist him in the fighting, but also because Quick Man pissed her off.

Everything goes...well...as smoothly as it can until they reach Heat Man’s stage, where Wild panics and dips due to the large amount of fire and hot things. Because of this, she doesn’t hear Heat mention Crash, and she can’t ask Rock about who’s next because he isn’t exactly being cooperative, due to his virus.

Wild falls slightly behind, so by the time she reaches the last part of the stage, Rock and Crash are already about to start fighting. After a brief moment of stunned disbelief because “Wait, you KNOW her?!”, Rock tries to fight Crash anyway while Wild tries to stop them. Crash secretly feels really bad about throwing Wild for a loop like this, but he doesn’t show it, not during the fight.

By the end, Crash just sorta forgets that Wild is there and shoots his bombs all over the place in a blind rage. He turns around and sees Wild, who looks scared of all the bombs, and realizes he’s made a huge mistake. Then he gets an idea; he runs over and tries to shield Wild from the explosion with his own body, since he’s much more resistant to that sort of stuff.

When the dust clears, Wild realizes what Crash did and frantically tries to drag him out of the rubble. They’re having a conversation while she’s doing this and Wild tells him that she doesn’t even care that he’s a Wilybot at all, he’s still her best friend!! Before she can free him, though, Rock drags Wild away and proceeds to blow up the whole compound...while Crash is still in there. Needless to say, Wild isn’t happy with Rock right now and she snaps at him before requesting to be teleported back for repairs, she couldn’t deal with this anymore.

After everything is over she gives an explanation to the Light family about what happened.

Interlude: Wild isn’t really involved with the Emerald Spears, since she wasn’t at the convention thing. She just kinda tries to vibe and cope with what happened in MM2. She’s also in issue 19, where she meets Splash Woman, and Wild immediately thinks she’s the best thing in the world. She also meets the 3rd liners at some point on work duty, though it was kind of an accident (she was trying to eavesdrop on them and fell out of the tree she was in right in front of them. Whoops.)

Also, Worlds Collide is canon. Remember Spectra? Yeah, her and Wild team up.

Ra Moon arc: Wild is at Rock’s birthday party when everything goes south, and is woken up again around the same time as the others. (When she woke up and learned that every robot in the world had been hit, she immediately starts asking about Splash and all but demanding that she get the coating). She’s sent along with Rock and the gang, since she works very well in rainforest/jungle environments. When they first meet one of the groups of 2nd liners, Wild realizes that something’s up, and she tried to ask where Crash was. When Metal refused to give her an answer, she insulted him to his face. Yeah, they definitely got off on the wrong foot.

Later on, when she actually does see Crash, the whole fight pretty much stops because him and Wild are overjoyed to see each other again, momentarily forgetting that there are other robots watching. (Cut Man says something like “Welp, looks like the cat’s out of the bag now”. Cheeky little shit). The other 2nd liners are a bit taken aback, but surprisingly accepting.

When Shadow Man and Quick Man pop out and have their fight, Wild says something like “Wow, never thought I’d be glad to see you again”. Thus, their rivalry continues.

(Some fluffy stuff happens during that scene where they’re all hiding in the temple at night but unfortunately I am too embarrassed to type it out publicly as of right now.)

Also, at some point, she completely goes off on Ra Moon and Dr. Wily, which takes everyone off guard. It’s practically just a long string of censor bleeps.

She helps Rock kick Ra Moon’s ass, world is saved, yada yada yada.

Between Ra Moon arc and MM3, Wild gets to know the 2nd and 3rd lines much better. They’re all just one big dumb chaotic friend group and everyone is having a great time. :]

Mega Man 3: Wild is incredibly suspicious of Wily from the start. Even if many other people trust him, she still thinks something’s up, and she’s glad to learn that Roll is also suspicious of him. She stays in the lab, not wanting to go out with Rock this time, since she befriended the 3rd line. She tries to keep in contact with them whenever she can, but it’s not always successful.

Wild sneaks off to monitor Dr. Wily after Auto goes missing, and catches him in the act of ripping out Auto’s memory boards. She runs to get Roll, who tells Dr. Light while Wild goes back down to where Wily is and tells him off big time (and when Blues comes in she starts telling him off too). You know the song “Backstabber” by Ke$ha? That basically summarizes this scene. Wily gets tired of it and orders Blues to do something about her, so Blues shoots her and knocks her out. When the DOC Robot is first activated, none of them actually see Wild, so they don’t know she’s there. She wakes up in time to make it down to the hangar before the lab explodes.

After venting her frustration with Dr. Light, Wild goes with Rock again to the Wily Castle. She shows up right after his fight with Break Man, so she misses all that. She helps Rock fight up until she sees the DOC Robot and figures out what’s going on, and Wild soon interrupts the fight because of what she sees. She’s able to talk them all down and deactivate them peacefully, and needless to say she never forgives Wily for that little stunt. After Gamma is defeated and Wily is presumed dead, she makes it clear that she isn’t gonna miss him at all.

Wild is over the moon about the idea of being able to live peacefully with the 2nd and 3rd liners without the looming threat of their creator. This doesn’t happen, though, since half of them (including the ones she was closest too; Quick, Crash, Gemini, ETC) choose to be deactivated. Wild is devastated, to say the least. She cries for quite a while before getting into a vicious argument with Dr. Light and running out of the labs. Their relationship is rather tense for a while after that.

I can just picture Aaron hearing that Andrew and Tilda got in a car crash and he hopes for a spilt second she is dead. Then finding out she is dead. Remembers every moment she had no emotion on her face, looked dead even. The screaming and blaming. Forcing him to sit in the car while she did whatever she was doing. Making him sit in the bathroom of a dirty motal while she had sex or got high with some random guy or the boyfriend of that month. Every morning when she was up the frist up, drinking coffee ment it was probably a good day. When she cried and looked for comfort in him, then ignored him again. Every OD scare she had. Every hit he receive. Now he is older and he can look back on it a know what she did to him was wrong. She wasn’t a good mother and even though her death broke him some type of way it saved his life.

Aaron finding out why Andrew told him to “Fuck off”. He pictures what Andrew had to go through in the foster system, with the Spears. He knows he would do it again. Fuck the nightmares and the side comments he gets. He would do it again. And again. And again. He would never let his brother be like that again, never wants to hear that laugh again. Never wants to be that angry again. They go to Bee. They are getting better. Slowly becoming brothers and even Friends. They share truths of childhood. Truths Aaron has never shared. He wasn’t to be happy, he wants his brother to be happy with him. Andrew deserves to be happy.
